Great topic! I love the lowly gondola, as it always performs the “grunge” jobs the railroads assign to them. Gilbert really made this common, nondescript freight car interesting throughout its long career, and yes, I still search for them. 😊
The red one really caught my eye! When I see something old that looks like new, my first thought is - that's not right - that can't really be original.
I continue to see ...like just yesterday, a person posted a flyer at that they do not run and keep packaged...it looked brand new fron the early fifties. I'm not supposed to cleaning cars up but I'll always run what I have...even the less common items.
Hi Austin, I have a 631 gray gondola from 1948 because it has brass buttons. The car has two steps on one end only missing. The car would have been VG to Excellent if the steps were there. I was surprised to see the car so clean and with super nice graphics. Even the couplers and trucks had almost no wear.
I'd like to find a red one some day. Not so into the gray ones, even though they are rare. I think some of the Pike master era ones are rather interesting.
Rare Red or Gray gondolas T&P 631 s are both very rare. My Red 631 almost as hard to find. My Gray 631 has two steps missing but cleanly shaved off. The 631 Red one has all steps and is reàlly nice. The Gray 631 is very niçe also except for the missing steps. Graphics are good on both càrs and very little scratches on both.
If you know a craftsman who can make new steps for my gray 631 1948 gondola. Looks like new if the two missing steps were still there. I bought a new 1940 box just perfect for it with the trucks turned around. The brass link coupler proves it was built in 1948.
Hi Austin, is the PM car a dark green Painted 24130. T&P gondola,? Very rare if painted dark green. Probably goes for $400 Ex. Cond. The 641. Unpainted gray one made in 1951 in Exc. Cond. is at $530. The 631 gray gondola.made in 1948 is $530 if in Exc Cond. I have one with 2 steps missing. An Excellent car if the steps were there. Too bad! Would it be reduced to Fair condition?

Cool, I will have to check my Flyer Flyer train set from 1959....it has a black gondola.
You have a black 24116 Southern gondola, not common, worth $130 in Excellent cond.
Sorry but I double checked and the Southern I have is a common 3 digit.
Thanks for sharing now I have check out my gondolas
Hehe...I wonder how many will do the same?
My flyer collection was the 600 cars with links; I had the ones you showed. TM retired AF collector

I've seen the red ones come up several times on ebay...not cheap but they ate around.
I have all but the grey.
Congratulations! I'm sure a grey will turn up for you

The T&P green goñdola was from 1949 or later.
