Electroplating

  • How does electroplating work? It is a process where you usually take an object made of one type of metal, and cover it with a thin layer of another type of metal. Usually, precious metals like gold, silver, or platinum are the metals that are electroplated. In an electroplating cell, electrons are removed from one of the metals, which is an oxidation process that happens at the anode. This causes the metal to develop a charge turn into an ion, and allows it to dissolve in the solution. Then, at the cathode, reduction takes place, and the metal ion turns into a neutral atom, and sticks to the surface of the other metal.

I am a past public school hs science teacher, and I am now homeschooling. My children were interested in electroplating because of a book that my son was reading. We watched a couple of other videos before yours and you were able to keep their attention for the entire video! They are 6, 11, and 13. I know they won't get all of the concepts but you have done a FABULOUS job of explaining a difficult concept with proper terminology. I am so excited and grateful to have your videos as a resource!! I know even though they may not understand it completely the first time, every time they are exposed to terms and ideas they will be building experience and knowledge. Thank you! (of course now my son wants to actually try it)

A question: Do you need both the Silver electrode and silver ions in the electrolyte to plate silver? Or can you just use one source of silver? For example if you had a platinum electrode instead of silver and used silver nitrate electrolyte? Or if you had silver electrode and just used potassium nitrate electrolyte dissolved in water?

I’m an electrician by trade and recently started teaching a 1200hr electrician class. One of the books we use Delmar’s Standard Textbook of Electricity. It’s a great book, but I thought I was not fully understanding something regarding this subject, and I was certain my students were a little confused as well. What they need is videos like this where someone takes the time and effort to properly and completely explain the subject. I could never explain this as well as you do. There are a lot of tradesmen teaching students in vocational programs that would love to purchase videos like this.

Question: The metallic cation separates from the rest of the metallic anode as it looses electrons. Why doesn't it happen the other way around? The metal cathode connected to the negative terminal gains electrons right? Why doesn't it from metallic anions and separate? Or is it not possible since all metals have the tendency to form only cations?
By the way, this video was amazing. Thanks for making such a good video.
