Re the lock feature: turns out you have to press VOL and buttons to move up/down through menus. But it keeps the UI simple and straightforward, and it's easy to get to your music. Separate volume up/down buttons on the side would've been a nice bonus, but holding VOL and using > actually works better than I expected.

To LOCK/UNLOCK player. When you press the Vol and Rewind button the same time it will lock itsef. You have to do the same to unlock. In the beginning i always accidentally locked it when i was adjusting the volume. When i really wanted to lock it i didn't know how. Took me a while to realize the trick. So now you know how to lock. Cheers!
Mine is also x02, locking and unlocking is different. To lock: (All long press) M + rewind button To unlock: (All Long Press) M + rewind + M again Or the alternate (All Long Press) rewind + M + rewind again

setting the EQ to 'off' bypasses the EQ circuitry. You will need bass heavy earbud to compensate. I use JVC Explosives xx for a decent 'smile' EQ. The Jazz Preset is acceptable. The user EQ set to 0db on all hz is completely different to OFF as it has to go through the DSP. Hope this helps Ruizu x02 is excellent. Just be careful as there are fake ones (yes even at £10)! The audio chip / op amp is a very good spec. The battery life is unbelievable - truly brilliant and has never let me down. I charged mine 3 times in 6 months after an hour commute 5 days a week. This as the OP mentioned is also my go between music player and worth 5 times its price - once you get used to the buttons. Just put 5 minutes aside to get used to the menu / button configurations. 10/10

So... my first copy's play button broke. It's good and all with everything else, except for that play button, so I ended up buying a second copy, and as soon as I put my music on it, it froze at the start up screen. Like, I can turn it on and off, but when I turn it on (or even connect to a computer), it just shows the start up screen and freezes. Makes it worse it doesn't even have that little reset hole...
Could someone PLEASE tell me how to ADD A BOOKMARK that is retained ? When I go to "Add Bookmark" during song I am presented with a 1 - 10 list of hh:mm:ss entries for time only, no file name. If I choose one of these entries it saves the bookmark only for the song I am playing and goes away once I change song/album/folder or turn unit off. That's not much of a bookmark if you ask me but maybe I'm missing something. Any feedback appreciated !

This is the best of the very low end players ( $17.00 Can ) but of course the sound quality is not the same as a $100 mp3 player or a $500 cellphone. I tried a pair of cheap Sony earphones ( $15 Can ) and the sound was unimpressive. I tried this cheap player with my Sony MDR-7506 headphone ( $130 Can tx inc ) the sound was quite good but I lacked volume - when I added my homemade CMoy headphone audio preamp in the line I had a sound that was much beyond the price of this Ruizu X02 player. Honestly I could listen and enjoy all day. The verdict you get what you pay for.
Hi, If you have several folders in one main folder, how it will play then? I mean can it play main folder with other folders inside? Or it will play only the songs it finds in the root of current folder...
I finally figured out how to download songs from my itunes library to the Ruizu. when I plugged it in to the car it would only play the 7 songs that came preloaded on the unit and not the ones that I downloaded? I know they are working as I can listen to them with the headphones on. Do I have to delete the original 7 songs or are the files in a separate folder that i'm somehow not getting to?

+Boomer Banff you could also try putting your songs on a micro SD card and plug that into the mp3 player, it should work but in order for the mp3 player to see the songs on the SD card you may have to click on the create playlist button.
double click on VOL then highlight in green "card folder" then select with Play button. Double click twice will bring you to Main Menu where you can choose all the different Modes : Music Video Radio Picture Record EBook Folder Tools Settings
Why did you skip the FOLDER setting? That's the one i was most interested in :-( All mp3 players can do most of the other stuff but not all of them has folder support the way a lot of us need.

I need an mp3 player to play podcasts. Can you please tell me if it will work the way I need it to. I need it to recognise standard tags so it will group - for example - all 'This American Life' podcasts together. Then, if I open a folder that contains all those American Life podcasts, if I choose the last on the list and play it, will the device stop when it finishes playing it? Or will it loop back to the first on the list and continue playing? I don't want that looping - or at least I need to be able to turn looping off - and it's why the newer Sansa mp3 players no longer work for me. I go to sleep listening to podcasts and I don't want the device to keep playing all night long.
I will go to the next folder and play something else. Once it's done it will stop. But I never get to the end as I have endless song and never check this.

JohnyTechReview Then yours will last forever! lol I use mine to sleep with which is like 8 hrs a night. I tried the sleep timer but i read somewhere that you should not just turn it off the 1-2-3 way but you should also turn off the switch on the bottom.The sleep timer won't take care of that :-(
Did you manage to figure out the volume button? I had the same problem in the beginning, it constantly locked itself. You need to LONG PRESS the Volume button, wait till you see the slider, and only then you press the rewind button. If you press both button the same time, it'll lock/unlock itself. You probably figured it out by now but if you didn't i hope it helped....
First you need to press continuously the VOL button until you see the volume slider. Only then you press rewind or forward to adjust the volume. You'll see the slider going up or down. If you press VOL and Rewind the same time it'll lock/unlock itself. I had the same problems in the beginning lol....
I would not say it's better than Iphone. Sometime I feel like the iphone provided a bit more depth in vocal and lower region. For most people they wouldn't notice different but I found this little player super useful to load up a ton of song and just have it in my jacket for travel .
How often do you use this? I really want to buy one but the one thing I'm most interested in is battery life. I'm not bothered by anything else but battery life? I'm always on the move and just like to have a reliable mp3 player. The one I have now cant even last for an hour. does this handle well on extensive usage each day say a couple of hours a day? +Leo West I've Use it for an entire school day nonstop (except for a 1 hr period) and it still has almost a full battery, If you carry around the micro usb cable it comes with and use it with a portable charger you should be fine for weeks.
Nice review. I, too am considering this for backpacking. Do you have any indication of how long the battery lasts when using the MP3 player, or when using the FM radio? Also, can this be set to play in a loop, so that it will start over again after playing, without requiring setting it to play again manually?
+Vegan Packer There's a battery meter.. But it goes something like 100%... 50%.. 25% and dead! You can loop songs in the menu. As far as FM, I have no clue how long it last sorry.
the radio probably has to work harder trying to get a reception so it drains battery faster. with mp3 files, the songs are right there saved to the device.

I was in love with this player once i learned how to use it first. It has all the features i need which i thought i'll never find in any player. I used it every night sleeping with it for exactly 2 months. I planned to buy several more since mp3 players becoming obsolete because of smart phones. Even if there's a lot of them out there NONE of them had the features i need so this was perfect...... WHILE IT WORKED! :-( Now is dead. I mean TOTALLY dead. I am disappointed. I know cheap Chinese stuff don't last too long but i didn't expect it to die in this short time. Maybe i over used it? Is anybody else out there with same problem???
Yup, exactly 2 months after it croaked on me too. I can actually play it for about 3 or 4 minutes each time but it constantly goes to sleep and have to turn off an on again and restart audiobooks from where it left off. another pet peeve was not having a button to control the auto rotate on the screen - one inch turn in one direction it flips - and pauses the audio for about 2 seconds.
I don't know if you got another one, but my second one just took a crap too. I know this time what i did wrong. The first one i had the habit to charge it with the same cord that i used for my phone to charge. That was a bad idea. The second one would last a lot longer but i didn't realized that i forgot to turn it off and the battery got discharged. That is an absolute no-no unless you immediately recharge it. It took me 2 days to realize that it was completely empty and i can't use it anymore :-(. I am ordering another one because the audio book playing abilities beats any player ever been made. You just have to be very careful to keep it charged all the time and never use other charger than what came with it. I hope this helped in case you got or want to get a new one.... Cheers
if it is just a battery that can be likely replaced. A new battery would prob cost around 10$ and might be even better than the original one. That said - without someone testing the battery, it could be something else, a loose connection, anything. Also, a hard reset or even "factory reset" can help, provided the function is there (most mp3 players get stuck sometimes). What have you tired so far? *I'm considering buying one.

@EranTalmor Mine just came in today. The languages settings doesn't appear to support Hebrew or even Arabic. Mostly Chinese and various Nordic, Slavic, European, Eastern European and other Asian languages. Some I couldn't tell what it was, but it wasn't Hebrew script either.

I bought one from DealsExtreme. The folder (Browser) is nice... You can copy files, move file, and other nice things.

Did you manage to figure out the volume button? I had the same problem in the beginning, it constantly locked itself. You need to LONG PRESS the Volume button, wait till you see the slider, and only then you press the rewind button. If you press both button the same time, it'll lock/unlock itself. You probably figured it out by now but if you didn't i hope it helped....

First you need to press continuously the VOL button until you see the volume slider. Only then you press rewind or forward to adjust the volume. You'll see the slider going up or down. If you press VOL and Rewind the same time it'll lock/unlock itself. I had the same problems in the beginning lol....

I would not say it's better than Iphone. Sometime I feel like the iphone provided a bit more depth in vocal and lower region. For most people they wouldn't notice different but I found this little player super useful to load up a ton of song and just have it in my jacket for travel .

How often do you use this? I really want to buy one but the one thing I'm most interested in is battery life. I'm not bothered by anything else but battery life? I'm always on the move and just like to have a reliable mp3 player. The one I have now cant even last for an hour. does this handle well on extensive usage each day say a couple of hours a day?

+Leo West I've Use it for an entire school day nonstop (except for a 1 hr period) and it still has almost a full battery, If you carry around the micro usb cable it comes with and use it with a portable charger you should be fine for weeks.

Nice review. I, too am considering this for backpacking. Do you have any indication of how long the battery lasts when using the MP3 player, or when using the FM radio? Also, can this be set to play in a loop, so that it will start over again after playing, without requiring setting it to play again manually?
+Vegan Packer There's a battery meter.. But it goes something like 100%... 50%.. 25% and dead! You can loop songs in the menu. As far as FM, I have no clue how long it last sorry.

Thanks. I ended out buying it. I tested the unit, and I got 80+ hours for MP3 battery life, but only about 16 hours for using the radio.
the radio probably has to work harder trying to get a reception so it drains battery faster. with mp3 files, the songs are right there saved to the device.

I was in love with this player once i learned how to use it first. It has all the features i need which i thought i'll never find in any player. I used it every night sleeping with it for exactly 2 months. I planned to buy several more since mp3 players becoming obsolete because of smart phones. Even if there's a lot of them out there NONE of them had the features i need so this was perfect...... WHILE IT WORKED! :-(
Now is dead. I mean TOTALLY dead. I am disappointed. I know cheap Chinese stuff don't last too long but i didn't expect it to die in this short time. Maybe i over used it? Is anybody else out there with same problem???
Yup, exactly 2 months after it croaked on me too. I can actually play it for about 3 or 4 minutes each time but it constantly goes to sleep and have to turn off an on again and restart audiobooks from where it left off. another pet peeve was not having a button to control the auto rotate on the screen - one inch turn in one direction it flips - and pauses the audio for about 2 seconds.
I don't know if you got another one, but my second one just took a crap too. I know this time what i did wrong. The first one i had the habit to charge it with the same cord that i used for my phone to charge. That was a bad idea. The second one would last a lot longer but i didn't realized that i forgot to turn it off and the battery got discharged. That is an absolute no-no unless you immediately recharge it. It took me 2 days to realize that it was completely empty and i can't use it anymore :-(. I am ordering another one because the audio book playing abilities beats any player ever been made. You just have to be very careful to keep it charged all the time and never use other charger than what came with it. I hope this helped in case you got or want to get a new one.... Cheers
if it is just a battery that can be likely replaced. A new battery would prob cost around 10$ and might be even better than the original one. That said - without someone testing the battery, it could be something else, a loose connection, anything. Also, a hard reset or even "factory reset" can help, provided the function is there (most mp3 players get stuck sometimes).

@EranTalmor Mine just came in today. The languages settings doesn't appear to support Hebrew or even Arabic. Mostly Chinese and various Nordic, Slavic, European, Eastern European and other Asian languages. Some I couldn't tell what it was, but it wasn't Hebrew script either.
