Blood on the Risers (A Tribute to Paratroopers)

  • I made this movie as a tribute to our paratroopers. I tried my best to tie in the lines of the verses with the pics but there where just some spots where I couldnt find the right pics. I used pics from WWII to today.
    Song: Blood on The Risers, sung by the 82nd Airborne Chours.
    Lyrics:
    He was just a rookie trooper and he surely shook with fright
    as he checked all his equipment and made sure his pack was tight
    He had to sit and listen to the awful engines roar,
    And he ain't gonna jump no more.
    CHORUS:
    Gory, Gory, What a helluva way to die
    Gory, Gory, What a helluva way to die
    Gory, Gory, What a helluva way to die
    He aint gonna jump no more.
    "Is everybody happy?" cried the Sergeant, looking up.
    Our hero feebly answered "yes," and then they stood him up.
    He jumped into the icy blast, his static line unhooked.
    He aint gonna jump no more.
    CHORUS
    He counted long, he counted loud, he waited for the shock;
    He felt the wind, he felt the cold, he felt the awful drop;
    The silk from his reserves spilled out and wrapped around his legs.
    He aint gonna jump no more.
    CHORUS
    The risers wrapped around his neck, connectors cracked his dome;
    Suspension lines where tied in knots, around his skinny bones;
    The canopy became his shroud, he hurtled to the ground.
    He aint gonna jump no more.
    CHORUS
    The days hed lived and loved and laughed kept running through his mind;
    He thought about the girl back home, the one hed left behind;
    He thought about the medicals and wondered what theyed find.
    He aint gonna jump no more.
    CHORUS
    The ambulance was on the spot, the jeeps were running wild;
    The medics jumped and screamed with glee, they rolled up their sleeves and smiled;
    For it had been a week or more since last a chute had failed.
    He aint gonna jump no more.
    CHORUS
    He hit the ground, the sound was splat, his blood went spurting high;
    His comrades they were heard to say, "A helluve way to die";
    He lay there rolling round in the welter of his gore.
    He aint gonna jump no more.
    CHORUS
    There was blood upon the risers, there were brains upon the chute;
    Intestines were a-dangling from this paratrooper suite;
    He was a mess they picked him up, and poured him from his boots.
    He aint gonna jump no more.
    Gory, Gory, What a helluva way to die
    Gory, Gory, What a helluva way to die
    Gory, Gory, What a helluva way to die
    He aint gonna jump no more.

    I often hear people say "What a disgusting song to sing about those brave men!". What they don't realize is that this song is paratroopers laughing at what they're afraid of. They're all scared white of having their chute not open. This song is not mockery, it is a stark reminder that this can happen to anyone in their regiment. The mark of a true soldier, a real trooper, is when the funeral is done, and he's in the ground, his comrades go to their local bar in silence, they have a toast to his memory, and then, very quietly, begin to sing this song. The Blood on the Risers. Most people don't get it, but the troopers through and true do get it.

      +Vincent Heartland Good post. As a jumper who has endured bad jumps both civilian and military, I find this song a form of "gallows humor", and I have always enjoyed hearing it. "feet and knees together!"

    My Dad was 82nd Airborne. I learned this song, and a few other ls that people would today wouldn’t think of singing to a little girl. But, I understood. I loved my Dad and the songs bring back the memories. My son is now a US Army pilot. Every generation of my family has served. My great-uncle died in the Ardennes in WWII. Since he had no children, we were given the Gold Star family honors for Memorial Day. I guess it was my destiny to be a soldier’s wife and a soldier’s mother.

    Wonderful tribute. My husband jumped many times during his 12 years in the 82nd. He sang that song around our kids just for fun. I'm very proud of him and all the others who wear the maroon beret. We loved watching a few Hollywood jumps at Sicily dz and parking at Pope just watching the planes take off. 1/504

    I am in Australia listening to this moving song, and thinking about all the soldiers who risk their lives every time they jump out of a plane, let alone face the dangers of combat. An Australian paratrooper lost his life here recently during a training exercise, when he had problems with his chute opening, or some other issue with his gear. There was a national outpouring of grief for this trooper and his family, and it emphasised the danger these guys face every time they jump. I can’t help thinking of the hundreds of paratroopers who died during WW2 when they dropped into France, and other locations to free the world from the evil of Hitler and all he stood for. Without their bravery, along with thousands of other brave troops, we would not enjoy the freedoms we have today. This was a great tribute, thanks for sharing. Greetings to all from ‘Down Under’!

    1980-0726, Saboteur Pours Battery Acid on Parachute.
    In 1980, I was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division @ Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
    Captain (CPT) Hill was my boss. The following information is from my diary:
    CPT Lawrence D. Hill exited a C-130 airplane on a night, combat equipment, Airborne operation. His main parachute failed to open & he fell to his death. @ daylight, the 82nd Airborne Division safety office investigation began. The main parachute, still in its pack, is a combination of nylon & a strange pasty substance. Tests reveal the parachute was soaked in battery acid. Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) takes over the investigation.
    Private First Class (PFC) Alvin P. Williams, a parachute rigger with E Co, 407th S&S Bn is the primary suspect, he packed the sabotaged parachute. He refuses to take a lie detector test. During the investigation, CID investigators strike PFC Williams repeatedly, knocking out his front teeth. He admits to bringing a soda bottle with battery acid into the parachute pack area & pouring it on the nylon material during the packing process.
    PFC Williams appears before a general court-martial. During pretrial motions, the judge refuses to allow evidence gathered during & just after the beating incident. PFC Williams admitted to everything in the hours after his teeth were punched out. He is found innocent due to lack of evidence. Upon hearing of his acquittal, Williams gave the jury a broad toothless smile. He tells reporters he can’t wait to return to his unit.
    Paratroopers in the 82nd Airborne are briefed on the incident & allowed to terminate jump status with no repercussions, 300-paratroopers out of 15,000 terminate. I did not terminate & went on to become a master paratrooper in the 82nd.
    Author’s note: The newspaper article below leaves out the part about acid & PFC Williams being beaten. CID was ashamed about losing the case. They also did not want “copycat” repetition of this.
    After PFC Williams was kicked out of the Army. CID sent two agents to his home town for six months to follow him hoping they could catch him doing something illegal. I told the truth, this is how the papers reported it:

    It is unnatural for a person to hurl himself from great heights,
    especially if the environment into which he falls is either unknown or know to be hostile.
