I cast AWAKEN on Henry Crabgrass! After spending the casting time tracing magical pathways within a precious gemstone, you touch a Huge or smaller beast or plant. The target must have either no Intelligence score or an Intelligence of 3 or less. The target gains an Intelligence of 10. The target also gains the ability to speak one language you know. If the target is a plant, it gains the ability to move its limbs, roots, vines, creepers, and so forth, and it gains senses similar to a human's. Your GM chooses statistics appropriate for the awakened plant, such as the statistics for the awakened shrub or the awakened tree. The awakened beast or plant is charmed by you for 30 days or until you or your companions do anything harmful to it. When the charmed condition ends, the awakened creature chooses whether to remain friendly to you, based on how you treated it while it was charmed.
I'm just imagining a future point where some creature has one of the group trapped in a dangerous situation and it looks bleak when all of the sudden out of nowhere we hear "thwip thwip thwip.".. And the evil creature just falls to pieces and out of the darkness there stands Henry crabgrass smiling and waving...
I was a few months behind on CR when the Henry Crabgrass started popping up all over the internets. Spent an entire weekend binging just to find out what the fuss was about. I was not disappointed.
If I had a nickel for every time I heard someone say "Oh my god, we're petting crabgrass." I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened twice.
Yeah... no. It would be cool but that's not for nothing that there is no speak with plants spell in BG3. Speak with dead and animals are so limited it's almost a shame.
Begs the question, does talking to the plants, the "normal" ones, give them new found sentience? Is it possible for them to start to try and comprehend life and maybe even eventually tap into magic?.
The spell description specifies "limited" sentience, though I'm not sure what that means, and also it only lasts 10 minutes, so I"I assuming the plant forgets whatever it"a "learned" once those 10 minutes are up, and it'll be a new entity the next time you cast the spell. At the DM's discretion, of course. My explanation is that you're not actually talking to a plant - you're temporarily drawing a nature spirit into a non-sentient object so you can ask it questions about its domain.
@@Caiydedefinitely has exceptions though, right? The sun tree definitely remembered the previous conversations in the vox machina campaign. Though I guess it's a pretty special tree.
@@jacobw.6744 100% there would be exceptions, aye. Anyone know the time limit on Speak With Plants?? I just had the mental image of Henry doing the dead guy from the D&D movie post credit scene where he was still under Speak With The Dead.
Honestly I love canine, but sometimes he is as useful as Henry. I mean, he's pretty much an extension of the sonic screwdriver Is there when the plot needs him and if Having him there makes It's too easy, then you just can't answer that question or whatever you're trying to do. Doesn't work. You get the idea "Even the sonic screwdriver won't get me out of this one."
Our first Pathfinder GM (sadly he moved) created leaf ducks. He explained them as alchemic-magical constructs that looked like ducks made entitely out of foliage. The alchemist who made them used them to keep his lawn in shape. And our elven rogue decided to buy one. 😂 Soon we found out that this duck would eat anything plant-based and in shocking quantities. When abcertain quantity was met it would lay eggs made of whatever it had eaten which would hatch into ducks made of the same. And they weren't exactly easy to train, my half-elf ranger tried. We ended up to take turns in distracting the rogue while our human magus killed the eggs or ducklings with cold spells cause they were threatening to become a plague. (Of course out of game everyone was fine with this even the rogue.) But our GM didn't stop there. The original duck grew in size one night and our dwarf cleric got into a fight with the rogue about killing it when suddenly it withered and died. In the dried leaves we found a golden fruit that was a cross between a pineapple and a raspberry. From which some time later a shapechanging animal hatched that ate anything but especially magic. It tried to eat the protective wall of a temple and we had to explain that we had a hard time controlling this living hazard. 😂 Loved it!
And this is Dungeons and Dragons folks. I've had my fair share of nonsense. My favorite was using mindflayer...bits, to check for traps. You'll laugh, but it freaking worked. Tied them to a rope and chucked it down a hallway.
Interesting side note on grass being stepped on hurting it. It turns out that the way a plant would "scream" is by releasing what are known as VOCs into the air. The smell of a yard being mowed is the massive release of those VOCs in response to being "hurt". Of course, what this means for a plant is very different from an animal. Still, it is fair to say that not only does it hurt but you can smell them scream.
Reminds me of when my drunk Druid had a conversation with a rat and the rat said something to the effect of “Well, I’m the only me!” which sent my drunken character down a sobbing, blubbering state that the little Rat believed in himself and I should too.
