idk if people said this, but for A.B.A., the morphing and shape is 3D animated, but they're using a 2D layer attached to the camera for extra details. It's like a half-transperant 2D drawing to help the model pop-out more. Found it out by playing around with a camera-unlocking tool.
The Faust joke I feel personally attacked by because working in the medical field... yeah getting hit in the shins by those wheelchair foot pedals HURTS.
One cool detail about Johnny that I don’t hear get talked about enough- Because he makes a J with his slashes during ‘That’s My Name’, it actually has an alternate animation depending on whether he’s facing left or right. That sort of attention to detail is why I love this game.
24:48 Interesting you say this, the reason goldlewis's lines of actions change so much is because in game, there are 3 different-powered versions of that super depending on how you do the input. The 1st version ends on that first line of action, the 2nd on the second line, and the 3rd on the last line of action. The version you saw was the 3rd and most powerful one. Sick to see an animator's take on this
You probably already know this info, but: Goldlewis's super has 3 levels, and you saw level 3. Each level adds another "pose" (I'm not an animator) to accentuate more damage. So you see 2 action line changes because each action line change represents another level of the super. Every character has a unique animation for getting hit by Faust's super and a unique facial expression. Might be a fun short thing to look at them all. Lastly, Jack-O can take off the mask in Strive, so her super is also animated to have her normal face as well. Good analysis!
7:00 Another cool detail about Nagoriyuki's super, in the reflection of his sword you can see a gashadokuro, which in myth is a giant blood drinking skeleton formed from the bones of those who died of starvation/without proper burial. Seeing as Nago's a vampire, the connection is pretty clear
9:09 Also: part of the idea behind the harsh light that i love is that if you look at Zato's hands, he's shadow puppeting what Eddie's doing behind him. He probably wouldn't _have_ to, considering Eddie can act on his own, but i think it's a pretty inspired choice over just giving a command
*tHiS gUy iS nOrMaL* the kid who is literally like an ultra juiced 5 years old half apocalypse monster baby, official version: "born from the eye of his mother that just popped out one day", that feeds on sugar water or sugar water with a pinch of salt on special occasions and choses to fight with a flag instead of a weapon because his delinquent scientist uncle said it was manly, yeah, normal
okay so for clarification; sin wasnt actually born from dizzy's eye, she laid an egg that he hatched from. the eye thing that actually happened was ky ripping out one of sin's eyes because sin couldnt control his power. this is why ky's dragon install originates from his eye, because that's actually sin's eye. as for the sugar water, he doesnt live on just that anymore, that's just the only thing sol gave him. sin is eating plenty of normal food now that he's living in illyria again.
26:50 I actually like it from a character standpoint because Slayer is a gentlemanly (dandy) vampire who is probably way over his blood drinking days, so saving the crazy eye for when he becomes younger again and more unrefined just fits so well!
Second that! There are lots of cool shots from all the different characters I personally love Sol's and I-no's reaction. Not overexaggerated, unlike Bedman's for example. But they perfectly sell you this feeling of being rammed to the shins. Yikes
@kerricaine BTW, yes! It may be brief, but if you go frame-by-frame, yes, every character's reaction is unique. I remember Gio having a pokerface while her doggo is completely mortified, lol
The level of detail in character interactions is insane. Every character also has up to two unique voice lines for being hit by Heavenly Potemkin Buster.
14:49 considering how Faust half of the time is defying human anatomy by rearanging every part of his body, the developers were just making sure he was in character
I do love the Strive animations, but I also really think that the insta-kill animations in their previous game XRD kinda top the cake on originality and creativity over all the Strive ults, it's a shame that they didn't bring back the insta-kills in Strive cause I feel they could've done them even better. would be cool to see a reaction to them!
Part of it has to do with Strive supers needing to be much shorter for gameplay purposes. You don't really see instant kills very often in previous guilty gear titles, compared to supers in Strive which you could easily see two in the same round depending on the character. Having long supers would break up the gameplay too much, I think.
pretty sure they’re gonna add them in the future, long ago at strives first evo that was a question asked and daisuke said “i can’t say anything at this time, but just saying that is saying something” edit: typo
@greatpapyrus6264 There was an interview more recently, and instant kills were brought to question. Miyauchi, Strive's director, would answer that what is stopping them from inplementing instant kills currently is the sheer quality - every character would have one and he said that putting them in the game with satisfactory quality would take time equal to development of two whole characters. So they have an estimate, lol
25:04 The reason why it looks like this super's direction changes is because it has 3 levels of strength depending on how many circles you do when inputing it. It can go directly into the last pose after the first if you only do the normal input.
4:57 I wonder if he knew she actually has a perfectly modelled and animated face behind the mask, and that u can actually take it off when you win and hold L2 till next round...

tbh everything they do in this game is fabulous all the attack animation and even how everyone walks and runs with so much character insid like nagoriyuki flips his sword and do a little punch to shake off the blood in his 6H animation they have different weapon models that are bent just to show the force behind that swing
When you got excited for Jack-O's face rig, I was wondering about your reaction to how complicated Paracelsus' face rig is, there's bones in there for both his regular form expressions and his Moroha/Jealousy mode expressions, and likely a model replacement for the Overdrive but I wouldn't put past ArcSys that there's a transition part where it's animating on his regular rig.

Like, what a way to establish yourself as someone whose opinions on 3D anime *matter,* I don't think I've ever seen a puppet with *this* much subtle and well-rigged motion. What the fuck. I will defend the Goldlewis line of action thing just a bit. The blacked out eyepatch/glasses thing he's got going on limits the angles that you can really shoot an expressive shot with the character, and I don't really know how well the posing would work if you moved the coffin to his other hand. Maybe I'm just imagining that it would be more awkward than it actually is.
I think another thing that can party explain it is its a button mashing ult. His glasses only break if you mash to its full powered version so maybe they had to pose his face so the player can clearly see the effect of their mashing but iunno
@@sf4603it's actually not mashing, you can do up to three circle inputs before pressing the button for more damage, if you do all three you get full power version

9:34 you got it. in the game data you can find the shading animation which gets played on top of this. 18:09 interesting that they decided to replace Leo's cross snapped weapon with that 3 armed thing. The facial animations are so good
Goldlewis changing his line of action actually emphasizes the amount of power you've charged his overdrive. He has three different power strengths based on how many times you rotate the stick, and those three "beats" of the animation tell you how strong the move will be.
11:12 True, but after you get hit by that ult at least 5 times in a match already it just feels like "Oh yeah, f- you too" after a while. Animation is gorgeous, but as a player, Chaos' ult kinda gets boring after a while
Best part of Faust's Overdrive is the unique face animations they did for every character, it alone puts for me puts it as number 1 Overdrive animation for this game. Also, you did dirty on Sol, but I forgive!
I was hoping you would also take a look at the Jack-O super without the mask. Not just because I like to see her without the mask but to appreciate the extra work that went into doing every animation she has with and without the mask and how nothing is lost in terms of expressiveness.
As someone who's played Guilty Gear Strive for a while, seeing someone actually sit down and analyze its animations up close frame by frame makes me appreciate it even more✨️
You may know this but the way they animated the characters in Strive is a lot closer to traditional animation (a new model for each frame) than most 3d animation (rigging and interpolation). They can still do 3d style animation, of course, but so much of it is pretty complex and hand touched up if not individualized per frame. That's a big part of why they can get those incredible, small but intentional imperfections of 2d animation. That also means they have to suffer some of the difficulty of 2d animation. It's like a hybrid between 2d and 3d styles and it works really well. (Edit) They did a gdc talk (i think) about the technology behind this game, it's probably worth a watch if you haven't seen it yet. For example, all of the shading is done by hand. One other thing: A number of times you wanted the animation to slow down or hold on certain points more. That's fair, but supers in modern fighting games are already too long so they're trying to not make people wait through these animations so the time. One special thing about Faust's super: that reaction face doesn't get reused. Every character has unique face for when they get hit by that and they're all just as good as Ramlethal's. Hell, some characters have more than one reaction. That's not the only super that gets per character reactions, though it's the one that's most in-your-face about it. I've been giving Strive sloppy love so far so let me point out one thing i consider an error: In Goldlewis's super, he's holding the coffin by the ring attached to it like a door knocker. He then punches it forward, but his hand is still at the bottom of it. That thing should flip up so it's following the force from his hand instead of leading it. Probably a tiny detail but it bothers me.
You should for sure check out the Instant Kills in Xrd. I also recommend checking out the Super Skybound arts in Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising and the supers in DNF Duel. Another thing, you forgot about Sol's Tyrant Rave.
I really hope this guy expands his videos on other fighting games. I love listening to people and their knowledge on fighting game animations. And this vid really scratched an itch.
The fact you missed tyrant rave made me feel sad because boy, that super is cool. Ive never gone frame by frame through it with animator eyes, but Sol's expression in that moment is gorgeous.
Gosh, I loved seeing the disection of all of these; is there any chance we could see you complete the ArcSys animation trinity and do Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising sometime? With the pedigree Granblue has with it's artstyle and the ArcSys "Not-2D 3D", it'd be a delight to see your thoughts, Goo! 🧡
Bed was in SS tier and I’m happy. I like Bedman? Not only because i know his story, but because the sheer emotions a sentient broken Bed frame could give is stunning and heartwarming(and also heartbreaking). Also Axel was once wanted by Interpol for saying energy equation (E=mc^2)
I think I should highlight that all the supers have a set amount of frames so maybe that's why they didn't extend(or overextended) certain sections of the animation
one thing with goldlewis's coffin super is that you can do more difficult full circle inputs than the standard half circle input to get more damage from it. theres 3 versions all with slightly different animations, and the one with the glasses breaking is max damage
The best part of Faust super is that every character has a unique animation for getting hit by it, some masochistic types enjoy it (I-no), some grin through the pain (Slayer), and most are just in agony (Ramlethal)
11:50 the thing is, she's not afraid of him, she's afraid he'll break or get damaged, because that machine (most likely, it's not confirmed afaik) houses the soul of her dead brother
I like the fact that they don’t really have to hide the morph frames with Faust because of how tall and lanky he is. When he reaches for the wheelchair, it doesn’t look like a morph frames because the guy’s arms are long as hell already.
Really good video ! I don't know if you already did, but you should also check out the victory animations of Guilty Gear Strive ! ^^ Oh and also, maybe your avater is a bit too big for a video where we're supposed to look at anaimtaion haha
another thing to point out about i-no’s cutscene is that the effect of her “ almost splitting apart “ is a canonical reference to the fact that she isn’t whole, her and chaos are 2 parts of a whole.
Yeah you were spot on with Zato's shadows. If you mod the game and give Zato a different model the shadows are still there in his shape so it's not like Street Fighter 6's graffiti thing and it is just a hand drawn overlay.
New Frame Plus did an amazing video discussing all the things Arc System Works did to make Guilty Gear look as good as it does. It's honestly a surprise how all of it is done in 3d animation, but they took the time to add in imperfections, and remove interpolations to make it look like a 2d art style.
Extra level to May's: it's probably the one moment in-game that most emphasizes just how much she's grown up. Prior to Strive, she was a perpetual child. But every detail of that shot feels like it's emphasizing that she's a young (if very smol) woman now.
Do you guys have recommendations on which fighting game animations you want me to review next? 👀

You should definitely react to their end of match victory poses since most of them are very unique and cool looking
Deadman is wild. 13:11
Foreshadowed
I love how bro just keeps adding tiers-
My favorite video i’ve seen in a while.. i love hearing what you have to say as an expert and i’m an avid guilty gear spectator, it’s such a beautiful game to watch
Animation is gorgeous, but as a player, Chaos' ult kinda gets boring after a while
I love Guilty Gear and its art so much, seeing someone who actually how to articulate why its awesome is so gratifying
Thanks for your insightful commentary!Thrilling!
Although, small correction, the sol super was actually on 4s,instead of 2s,like you claimed and the character isnt painted or whatever autism said
NAGORIYUKI MY GOAT!!! Also happy to se review this
Best part of Faust's Overdrive is the unique face animations they did for every character, it alone puts for me puts it as number 1 Overdrive animation for this game. Also, you did dirty on Sol, but I forgive!
I love tier list that have nice reasons, arguments and commentary. Keep up with good videos ❤
I was hoping you would also take a look at the Jack-O super without the mask. Not just because I like to see her without the mask but to appreciate the extra work that went into doing every animation she has with and without the mask and how nothing is lost in terms of expressiveness.
strive is a game made with love and passion and i gotta respect it
As someone who's played Guilty Gear Strive for a while, seeing someone actually sit down and analyze its animations up close frame by frame makes me appreciate it even more✨️
fun fact: A.B.A actually stands for "Absolute Best Animation" lol
Thank you for actually REACTING to stuff and analyzing it. Actually productive video
Great review! They really perfected so many things here in Strive that they began to introduce in Xrd. Real masters of their craft
(Edit)
They did a gdc talk (i think) about the technology behind this game, it's probably worth a watch if you haven't seen it yet.
Oh wow didn't expect this, awesome to see tho!
PLEASE do the same for GG XRD Instant Kills, they're even better!!
i think the thing that especially improves asukas super is the fact that his cloak creates a perfect background for him.
Actually, about Sol's Overdrive, he's not covering his face, but rather, he was removing that thing on his forehead which controls his DI.
I never noticed sol taking off his headband limiter off in heavy mob cementary
The fact you missed tyrant rave made me feel sad because boy, that super is cool. Ive never gone frame by frame through it with animator eyes, but Sol's expression in that moment is gorgeous.
I was really hoping you'd do these one day and here we are
Gosh, I loved seeing the disection of all of these; is there any chance we could see you complete the ArcSys animation trinity and do Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising sometime? With the pedigree Granblue has with it's artstyle and the ArcSys "Not-2D 3D", it'd be a delight to see your thoughts, Goo! 🧡
Bed was in SS tier and I’m happy.
I like Bedman? Not only because i know his story, but because the sheer emotions a sentient broken Bed frame could give is stunning and heartwarming(and also heartbreaking).
Also Axel was once wanted by Interpol for saying energy equation (E=mc^2)
"Carrying a coffin made of bombs or some shit?" Is my fav quote in this video
I think I should highlight that all the supers have a set amount of frames so maybe that's why they didn't extend(or overextended) certain sections of the animation
Oh man Goo did guilty gear animations i hope he does Granblue Rising sometime down the line
Can you do winscreens? I feel like that's the peak of guilty gear animation
I would kill for him to react to the instakills in the last game
one thing with goldlewis's coffin super is that you can do more difficult full circle inputs than the standard half circle input to get more damage from it. theres 3 versions all with slightly different animations, and the one with the glasses breaking is max damage
The best part of Faust super is that every character has a unique animation for getting hit by it, some masochistic types enjoy it (I-no), some grin through the pain (Slayer), and most are just in agony (Ramlethal)
HE FINALLY COVERED GUILTY GEAR
15:31 this is just a WHAT?
MY PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED😊
11:50 the thing is, she's not afraid of him, she's afraid he'll break or get damaged, because that machine (most likely, it's not confirmed afaik) houses the soul of her dead brother
wake up!!! new professor goo video!!!
Entertaining and informative video! In case you didnt know: Testament uses they/them pronouns just for future reference :)
AH good to know ty!!
I like the fact that they don’t really have to hide the morph frames with Faust because of how tall and lanky he is. When he reaches for the wheelchair, it doesn’t look like a morph frames because the guy’s arms are long as hell already.
24:35 the coffin has aliens in it and he doesn’t need to think about it.
Need him to react to the entire roster being hit with Faust's Overdrive
Really good video ! I don't know if you already did, but you should also check out the victory animations of Guilty Gear Strive ! ^^ Oh and also, maybe your avater is a bit too big for a video where we're supposed to look at anaimtaion haha
1:20 B for Bulsara
another thing to point out about i-no’s cutscene is that the effect of her “ almost splitting apart “ is a canonical reference to the fact that she isn’t whole, her and chaos are 2 parts of a whole.
I especially love how different the reactions from each character is for faust lol
Extra level to May's: it's probably the one moment in-game that most emphasizes just how much she's grown up.
Prior to Strive, she was a perpetual child. But every detail of that shot feels like it's emphasizing that she's a young (if very smol) woman now.
