I got quoted £2800 to install UPVC French doors, so tried fitting them myself

  • A few months ago, I got a quote from a local double glazing company to replace these old sliding patio doors and a window to UPVC French doors for a total of £5400.... I'm not sure if this price is average or reasonable to you, but it was a lot more than I was expecting.
So I ended up calling Roundbrand Ltd, the company my Dad always uses back in Doncaster for initially just one quote (the smaller French doors) and it was a third of the price, with delivery 70+, miles away, so I decided to DIY it myself.
The big ones we installed in this video were quoted by a local company at £2800, but ended up paying 1404 (includes VAT).
    Here's how I got on.
If you're in Yorkshire or Lincolnshire, you can get a quote from one of the branches here:

Definitely self fit, got quoted £12K for all the windows and 2 doors in a small 3 bed semi, bought the windows myself from the same local manufacturer they use and only paid £3200 plus the fee to get the local authority to sign it off, did it all in a week too.

Me and friend opened up a garden-facing kitchen wall to install large French doors from B&Q. Quite a bit of brick dust, but we used those polythene dust sheets and tape to keep it at bay. Installation was really straightforward and looks great. I too was quoted a stupid amount (£2K) for a job that takes less than a day. FEAR of messing up is what prevents you from having a go.

Well done Vikkie. Also took out some Solair sliders and fitted my own second hand acquired frenchies. Rosewood both sides, so sprayed inside white. Fitted well, masonrys and anchors into the brick, plenty of foam and PVC profile... job done and a ton of money saved as the door cost me around £250 plus £50 in fuel.
Just done bathroom window which was a mismeasure gained from local glazing centre found on ebay. I love a bargain. Downside is I've had to refurb the bathroom now. Thing is, some windows we had professionally installed are "loose" as they fitted into the mortar, plus didn't foam it so I also have thermal bridging issue. So you pay for certification and supposed knowledgeable pros, yet we as DIYers can do a better job and take pride in the work!!

I found this channel last week and have since watched EVERY video you've done at the farm ... Absolutely brilliant !! Re taking the window out and replacing with 'internal' opening doors ... as these doors will be unprotected from the weather, something to think about, will be that it they open inwards, if it's rained at all, then that rain water could then drop/dribble on your new parquet flooring. If they open outwards, that won't happen. You could always hold them open with some hooks, stop them being blown by the wind.... Just saying :)

I'm really glad you attempted fitting it yourself and covered the process in this video. I am looking forward to the next video covering fitting the other french doors. Over a few years we had various companies fit double glazed windows and doors, when it come to doing our final one which were the patio doors we fitted them ourselves we felt we had fitted them far better and wish we had fitted all of our other windows and doors, and that is what we would certainly do in the future. I think your video shows how possible it is to do it yourself

With the packers, as you wont need them to keep the glazing units above any water ingress line, the packers really are there so that the sight lines of the spacer bars of the glazing units are equidistant on each side in respect of the glazing beads. You probably won't have issues with UV damage but, generally, it's always advisable to keep the glazing primary seals away from sunlight too.
With heel and toe, set the bottom packers to get the sight lines correct (as above) and then place corresponding packers in the top corner as well. Again, it's all about getting the glazing unit to sit square in the frame and be well supported and right for the sight lines. If the door does not shut properly at the bottom (and assuming the door frame is not strengthened with steel), you can pack the top of the frame slightly upwards so that the frame becomes a slight parallelogram. This causes the bottom corner to rise and gives you clearance, always trying to preserve the sight lines as much as possible. If it sticks at the top, remove packers from the top so that the top of the frame drops. You may need to pack the top side out slightly to keep the glass well held. Remember, the glass is the stronger structure (up to a point), the frames are relatively floppy.
When putting in the beads, start at the top and get the centre inserted, gradually working toward each corner. Use you body to keep the glass in position. On the sides, spring top and bottom into place and accept that there is a slight bow in the middle. Locate now the centre, and work toward the edges equally with your glazing mallet. If the beads are stubborn you can use something like uPVC cleaner or Brite to act as a temporary lubricant. Best not to hammer the beads too furiously as they get damaged if forced too much.
All of this said - excellent job and well done.

Tip 1: whenever moving heavy items some grippy tactile gloves really help, you'll be surprised! This tip came from a man-and-van mover when he lent me some.
Tip 2: whenever trying to get awkward plastic parts together a little bit of washing up liquid can help.
Tip 3: the disposable foam cans are terrible, always. The metal guns (and gun cleaner) are sooo much better.

Hi Vikkie, You have done a great job installing new French doors I have done this in the past, it's not an easy job. Being honest if you can do it your self then do it, you can save a lot of money. I fitted window in my porch about a month ago, my windows are reclaimed but look good for the porch. I did buy new sills and fascia boards and they are made by Liniar, Quanex. I used 125mm concrete and wood screws and expanding foam. Your video footage is fine, as always a great video take care

    Hi Viki,
Nice job for a first go, Just a bit of guidance don't use ordinary expanding foam there is a specific windows and doors foam filler which is denser and less in the expansion department so it does not go crazy. (less to tidy up )

Well done and a great saving in cash. I used that brand of expanding foam recently around window frames and it was a similar nightmare to dispense without it expanding everywhere it shouldn't. I found out the hard way that if you wipe it off plaster and let it dry you can't paint over it with emulsion (similar to sealant). Had to sand it off the plaster in the end.

a tip for the expanding foam is to put the straw into a silicone nozzle, reduces the output and the rigidity makes it easier to control.

And if you have to do a lot, get yourself a foamgun, its much easier to control and the screw-on cans tend to be a bit cheaper, they also keep longer as long as you keep the gun on the can and its nozzle clear (a spray-on foam cleaner is golden as are some of the wipes)

Gr8 job, whenever you toe and heel doors a must tip is put packers underneath the unglazed opening doors to square up in its frame, this will stop the door dropping as you put glass in, its all good packing the appropriate corners but the sheer weight of the glass will make the door drop before you've properly toe and heeled, but get it pre packed and square underneath before glazing then the door has nowhere to drop, once glazed it might be bit stiff to open the door with packers there but once open and packers removed you'll have properly toe and heeled and the tight packing around glass in appropriate corners won't allow the door to drop over time. This is why it was snagging the bottom when you first opened door, by packing and squaring up the unglazed door (window) first it'll save you needing to re size the packing between the glass. The foam was a bit overkill to be fair as those fixings were more than adequate, just some neat white silicone would be fine but leave that until very last job in room due to future dirt and dust affecting the nice white finish. I may have been tempted to go for a sliding patio, one fixed, one opener? Looks brill and money in your pocket!

Tough job that mostly on your own! Good work! The biggest tip I would give you is get an expanding foam gun and use gun grade foam, those cans with a nozzle are cack. I honestly wouldn't worry about the certificates, I asked about them for the electrics and gas in my house everyone shrugged and it came down to do yo want to buy the house or not. If enough time passes by the time a house is up for sale they don't seem to mean much, you certainly wont find any for the practically full rewire and log burner install that I did 😂

Using solvent actually dissolved her curtains 😂) The pro guns are better. More control. Also check op of door before you put on top bead. Adding packers to top lock side will lift the door leaf.

  • @jonathanhasmail
    @jonathanhasmail หลายเดือนก่อน +1

If you ever need to redo the heel & toe packers, buy yourself a Purdy decorator tool, they have a narrow knife edge, strike-through handle and are stiff enough to safely use as a lever to get the glass beads out. I second the ‘choking the hammer’ comment, hammers strike much better when swung from the end of the handle. I’d also suggest making some folding wooden wedges to help when fitting the next set with a pair of wedges located directly under each post, that way, the door frame will be held solidly up against the lintel and they are infinitely adjustable. I made a jig for my table saw for thick and thin wedges.

I think you'd be better to install the next set of doors to the outside opening outwards. You'll lose a lot of floor space otherwise and, as someone else says below, if it's been raining and you open your doors, the water on the doors will run off onto your floor. Nice job on these doors, it's always easier with a bit of swearing!

I'm really sorry to hear that, they're really not paying me much, but at least i'm saving doing this stuff....
I raised this with my youtube friends in Newcastle the other week, i heard they're throwing more adverts in and potentially paying less per view too.
I hate to say it but i pay for premium because i use it so much, i really notice it when i go into ingognito mode for research.

Well done good job. only suggestion. buy yourself, a proper dispenser for your Expanding foam, they are great things. and you don't have the cleaning problems like you do with the polytube. as it seals right on the end tip when you release the trigger So you should be able to go back to it. Maybe. months later and it still should work even if it's got foam inside it .If it does happen to block you can buy foam cleaner as well. Sorry I don't remember the exact names for these products. but I bought mine from Screwfix. And remember, the cans have a different connector on the top than the one you were using. But they're no different price.

I’ve used tons of those tech screws to put wooden decking on trailers, but I’ve found depending on the steel, I have much better luck pre-drilling the holes and only using an impact driver for pre-drilled holes, and a drill if the screws are up to the task of drilling the whole steel.

Hi, great job. I'd suggest getting a non stick foam gun to make your life easier. Especially if you have to do more foaming.

I use to use the foam cans with the flexible nozzles, but after getting a proper foam gun, I would never go back to using the cans as they just don’t have the control that the actual foam guns have

You can simply pay your local building control to sign off the windows if you do fit yourself. In my area it’s around 200- 300 plus vat for up to 8 windows. Building control checked the windows before installation. Having the energy rating documentation meant they did not have measure the glass etc. they made some recommendations about the installation (number of fixings and location). After install a visit to check all signed off. When the property was sold the solicitor did indeed ask for a FENSA certificate, but building control sign off was accepted otherwise would have to bought indemnity insurance. Whilst it would not stop you buying a place, you probably would want some money off the purchase for the hassle.

Got to admit I paid to have mine fitted!
...... But there were 12 of them one back door and a porch (4 and a door with one above it) and I got a Great price and it was done in 3 days!
I do have to admit it was a bit nerve wracking taking the big pane out of my front window in order to get my suite in because it was too tall to go through the door (and too wide tbh)
There is a bit of a knack to tapping the trim back afterwards, but once you do one all is good!

I've always been worried about furniture being too big to get through the door. I remember my Dad years ago having to do that to get our new sofa when we were little.. but I think they were double glazed wooden windows, so not sure how easy that was back then in the late 80s/early 90s

My last house had them and my suite did not fit the door there eather!
One hack knife and an hour of cutting old putty out only to chip the glass on its way out! .... That was fun! Still I got it all back temporary and put a new pain in the following day!

Use Soudal Genius insulation foam for the next one, Screwfix or Toolstation. More controllable and lower force when expanding.

Top Gear top tip...... you can gain another 6mm (either side, or top/bottom) fitting these if you take any electric plane and machine off the outer parts of the profile - if you find yourself stuck again.
