    Ray was a great singer with great range. And he can sing live too. Though this song is all Dio, I think Ray did it justice.

      I actually think he did a better job, live anyway.

      Dio - as great as he was and his greatest power was in the lower register- Gillen's power was his excrptional range. He lifted up the higher notes of these Dio songs to stratospheres. Above no one else could reach withouth sounding bad.

    • @luamoliveira3467
      @luamoliveira3467 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@peteroking Ray Guillan's version was very good but the version performed by Dio in Utrecht Netherlands is impeccable in my view and far superior in all aspects. Dio hits higher and sustained notes than Guillan in this version, impressive dynamics and variation of melodic designs with impeccable intonation, he hit a sustained E5 with extreme ease. The best version and besides being performed by the original singer.

    Everybody forgets that Geoff Nicholls was the longest serving Sabbath member after Tony Iommi till he departed in 2004. Former members and insiders say he was Tony's right hand man and always the glue that held whatever format Sabbath was together. He never got the credit and very little praise from Iommi for it. RIP

    • @byrdland5790
      @byrdland5790 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      While Nicholls deserves praise I see the glue as iommi for keeping the sabbath style alive and he is what created the sound we all love

      He ranks next to Iommi as far as the Dio/Martin etc era is concerned. Also a lyricist. Before Headless Cross he was the only shred of continuaty aside from Iommi. He also supposedly did ghost vocals on this tour when Glenn was messed up. As much respect as I have for Iommi as a musician, he doesn't have personal loyalty for others. He's forgotten that Tony Martin exists if we need any more evidence.

    Ray Gillen is that guy that could’ve bypassed so many singers that had much less talent. Many of whom became much more rich and famous. He got a bad hand in the game of poker (life) I’m grateful for Badlands’ first two albums. A New Jersey guy with the best pipes in the country.

      Dio was another level of extremely virtuous vocalist and one of the best vocalists of all time for many singing experts, no one surpassed him in his songs and even Ray Gillen who was the only one who did justice to Dio's songs, plus the performances Ronnie on the Live Evil 1982 show and the Holland 1983 show are untouchable in terms of consistency and vocal perfection but Gillen was a monster vocalist and had great potential at that time where his voice was already beginning to enter its peak, just like Dio , he's one of my favorite rock/metal singers too.

In Jake E Lee's interview with Delray Jake said that for the Sabbath stuff Ray actually tried to sound like Dio somewhat, but his true voice was on the Badlands records.

    Great vocals. Very strong chest voice, which is what this song requires. I do love Gillan and Halford's takes on this song, though, with more emphasis on the screams.

    @MrJimmyBain23 Hmmm. Gillen did Sabbath before Badlands? Oh how much I didnt know. I was able to see Badlands a couple times in San Francisco in 1989 and 1999. What a great band. Jake E Lee was phenominal, as was Gillen. One of the best live shows Ive seen, and Ive seen A LOT of em since my first concert in 1977. Led Zeppelin. Cheers!

    All my videos? Actually I have plenty of Dehumanizer-era vids, vids from the first lineup, vids from the first Dio lineup, the Born Again lineup, and from the current "Heaven and Hell". So its quite obvious I don't have any sort of bias with regards to Sabbath's lineups. Sabbath is Tony Iommi's band...it always has been. If you don't like this, then don't watch it and more so, don't post on it. Besides obviously you can't read because the title it clearly says "Ray Gillen vocals".

    Tony Iommi's riffage is unbelievable in this song. Dio's original vocals are very similar to Ray Gillen's. I would have thought he would try to make this song his own.

    @SFFRET Tony Iommi IS Black Sabbath, compared to Ozzy, Tony has actually written the majorirty of the music in Black Sabbath. Geezer was the lyricst. Geoff Nicholls has been with the band since 1979.

    @SilverTounge85 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @aragornexe I agree, yet disagree to a point. Dio's rendition of 'Paranoid' was ok I guess. I love Dio, one of my favourite singers, but when doing the Sabbath classics from the Ozzy-era, 'Paranoid' was the "least" good of them. He did 'War Pigs', 'Iron Man' etc. pretty good though. Ray could sing it all. Listen to him performing the title track (Black Sabbath), he sounds likea young Ozzy around 1970-71, and on the Dio stuff, he sounds fantastic, he did the Glenn Hughes material fantastic too.

    No hay dudas, Ray Gillen fue el mejor cantante que tuvo Tony Iommy a su lado a lo largo de toda su carrera, luego viene Padre Ronnie James Dio! Los dos mejores en la historia!

      vos capo que yo dentro de las bandas que oigo esta es una de esas que suelo oir entre Queen zep Scorpions y ac dc .... revisando a Gillen al principio no entendía porque hacían y tanto lio con este tipo ( pensaba despues de oir a Martin en estudio por el tipo de voz mas parecido a coverdale , que porque decian que era mejor , pero claro Tony Martin en vivo flaquea vocalmente hablando y Gillen interpretaba el material de la bruja sin problemas ).
