Same as today.. as It was then!! What I'm sayin' is: Gillan was NOT the "wrong fit" for Sab'.. as 99.9% of Metal Heads back then, highly overstated!! Gillan was a Great Fit.. and probably would've stayed further on, had It not been for the long awaited & highly anticipated/desired Purple reunion.. Everyone said everything from the notion of Gillan, to the album, (Born Again) to the show.. TOTALLY SUCKED!! I STILL!!.. Beg to differ & have great memories of the show w/Quiet Riot, and still love & listen to the album!! C'mon ppl, Gillan could've joined the fk'n
Go Go's.. and did great, let alone that He did with Sab'!! No offense to the Go Go's either.. It's just the point.. So.. "If" Ya' STILL HATE everything from the notion on'bout the Gillan/Sab' collab'.. You aren't listening!! And I get the Dio thing.. who walked & left the door open for anybody to replace Him!! Hell.. Sab'/Iommi, could've truly fk'd up Dio's replacement.. to which no one can truly do.. Yet regardless, hearing It on the radio, yeah.. I was initially stunned(!!) But fig'd hey, Its not like Gillan joined "Josie and the Pussycats" and or, Iommi hired a relatively unknown Roseanne Barr to take Dio's place!! Funny thing really Is.. that same 99.9% of Metal Heads back then.. said the exact same shit about Dio..when He replaced Ozzy!! And any true Sab' fan who says, say fk'n Glenn Hughes was a better fit for Sab'.. than Gillan was?!?! You desperately need your hearing checked!! Hughes.. and sadly, couldn't even "look" the part for Sab'!! Yeah.. and now all the "Gillan knockers".. go: "Uhhh' ee'yeah I did say the exact same'bout Dio & Ozzy'" So hey.. some roughly 40yrs afterwards.. give Gillan & the "Born Again" Sab' album a really good listen!! That album can/will grow on ya', show ya' what you've missed in those 4 decades!! Or.. be a Hater and be happy with the fact that Gillan did only the 1 Sab' album.. and left!!

Ian Gillan is Ian Gillan! The only one!
He is never thought to 'copy' the original version. We don't expect him to do 'copy'. This is very different from the original. And that’s why we can enjoy this very much!

Ian Gillan sang both Ozzy and Dio's songs like Ian Gillan - he made no attempt to imitate either one of them and they sounded excellent. It would have been interesting to see how this marriage may have worked out long term. It could have worked. Deep Sabbath? Black Purple?

This is the 1st time I heard his version, and just heard Paranoid! He said he was the worst Black Sabbath singer! Sounds pretty GOOD for a guy who had to do 2 different singers' songs! I saw Deep Purple 5 years ago! His voice was still GREAT! He might be in his 70's, but he's still a GREAT HEAVY METAL SINGER! Him & the rest of DEEP PURPLE are still HIGH-QUALITY ROCKERS!!!

Ian did all of the really high head voice stuff because it is the easiest way to sing those notes with a fucked up set of pipes. The nodes had already been scraped off but he refused to listen to his physican & the surgeons when they said he had to take a full year off from doing anything. He didn't do vocal rehab either & only waited four months to get back on the road. Not wise, but what dedication!

I know friends who saw this tour. Said Gillain was crazed. They didn't even like Sabbath or I.G. But they were freaked out. I believe it. Because Born Again is gonzo all the way through. Most classic rock fans are stupid. People don't get it. Sab and Gillian were a beautiful fit. If only for one year.

    • @Frip36
      @Frip36 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I love the struggle in his voice here, actually. I hate to say it, but I like his live vocals with Sabbath better than Dio's. By the 80's Dio didn't have a strong live voice. In studio he did, of course. But Gillian had a monster voice. Approaching Halford-like strength. Dio did not. Dio knew how to properly sing. But the little guy couldn't cut it live after a certain point. Fight me.

Geoff Nicholls (R.I.P) played keyboards, but also occational rythm guitar. He did so on the Dio-era 1980-82 too from what I understand. Not on the 'Seventh Star' tour though.

Not on every song, just occationally. Geoff also played keyboards. I think he did additional rythm guitar on 'Children of the Grave' , 'Neon Knights', 'Paranoid and a few more.

it's not about "apples and oranges," just Gillan is a much higher-class singer. It is enough to see the video of 1999 "Smoke on the water" in the Albert Hall, that it would become clear. So it is incorrect to compare them.

      No....they are both top-notch.
How else could they just step into the limelight after the fact...?
Ozzy went on tour with Brad Gillis to resurrect lost ground after R R. passed...
Dio stepped in a d they formed Rainbow around he and Blackmore ( no small feat )He co-wrote the material, a bona-fide musician, an ability which also defined the time with Sabbath.
Ian Gillan made a solo foray after Deep Purple, but remember, he was in Jesus Christ Superstar AND only he can claim the distinction of playing with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, which can be replicated ( I m sure it has been )but the fact is, he was in the band for that and the ultra progressive In Rock sessions....
if you listen to preGillan Purple, the sound is,almost gothic. Very good, but something was missing...POWER from the vocals! So, when Purple disbanded, gradually, how could Blackmore not notice the little talented guy from the opening act, Elf? Suffice it to say, the two, Dio and Gillan, or vice-versa, were extremely talented and they played with the best....

@@Grigoriygb Even in his own song, Dio did better than Guillan in terms of vocal performance in that same song "Smoke on the water", Guillan after surgery on his larynx due to those vocal problems still in the 80's, he couldn't sing anymore at the same level that he sang in his prime and in the late 90's he already clearly demonstrated a bit of nasality in his voice, a certain tension in his mechanism and his voice sometimes failed live in brief moments of harmony and for me that I have deep knowledge in vocal physiology, within my evaluation criteria, I can identify these problems very clearly and explain in a more technical way about your vocal structure; Dio in 1999 still sang at a great level and his voice still remained intact over time and this performance here demonstrates such tonal consistency, control and ease to project the voice and permeate with incredible agility through the passage without problems throughout this performance when he begins singing, her voice easily sounds more powerful/resonant than Guillan's voice: th-cam.com/video/vp7cnNqjYFU/w-d-xo.html

I remember trying to sing this at two jam sessions in the eighties when I was young, and it was agony for a baritone.
Gillan sings between E (Black Night) and G (Highway Star) and to try to sing in Dios key is unwise, he was never going to do it.
Gillan was also supposed to be recuperating after nodule surgery but accepted the Sabbath gig, probably as he was short of money at the time.
It was the wrong decision as it cost him his voice for the Purple reunion, which was often substandard due to his failure to pitch correctly in concert.

As much as I like ELO, it feels like Bev's heart isn't in it with this performance. Yes, he keeps the beat, but I disagree with the Wikipedia assessment that he was a powerhouse on this tour, at least from this recording. Appice did not carbon copy all of Ward's fills, but at least he respected where certain drumming accents belonged. Bevan drums like he barely gave this song a listen before hopping on stage with Sabbath. There is a difference between making it your own, and just 4/4ing it. It feels like he treated this like a easy cash gig without giving the original material the proper level of respect while on temporary break from ELO.

This version is very weak, Guillan's voice is breaking all the time and his reinforced falsettos are not even close to the powerful highs with chest voice distortion that Dio performed, you have to be very crazy to even compare a weak version like this and with a very evident vocal instability from Guillan with Ronnie's much more consistent and powerful vocals.
