Taking Jesus Back from the NEW AGE: The Mark Series pt 40 (

  • Some times we have been so indoctrinated into unbiblical ideas about faith, healing and prayer that we don't notice when the Bible is trying to correct us. As we study this passage I'm going to try and point out specifically how Jesus is not giving us the hyper-charismatic or new age views on prayer, healing and faith. But there is a risk that in refuting these false ideas we will miss out on the wonderful things God is trying to communicate. The Bible isn't just telling us what NOT to believe but also what TO believe. So, we are going to embrace what it says about faith, healing and prayer... all of it. Unlike the new age and hyper-charismatic tendency to ignore context and distort things to fit their movement and the "vibe" they are trying to create in their communities.
Are you interested in the supposed contradiction regarding the healing of the blind man? Here's what I've got on that • "FULL of Contradiction...

Not to be super technical-although I am being super technical-but wouldn't the healing of the soldier's ear be Jesus' last healing? I'm just asking for my own understanding. I'm not trying to get one over.

Wow. You’re totally right. Thanks for pointing that out!
Let me add a couple details here, not to defend myself though, I actually really appreciate any correction and you are right to offer it. I said that this was the final healing in Mt, Mk, and Lk. But in Luke we have Malchus' ear being healed by Jesus. It's only in Luke and so it is still the final healing in Mt and Mk. This means I was wrong and I appreciate you pointing it out. So, I'm not interested in defending myself at all but I do want to mention something that rescues my interpretation of the theological implications of this healing. It is still the last healing in Mark and Matt and it may be even more dramatically emphasized because they must have known about Malchus' ear but chose not to include it, perhaps showing even more emphasis on the miracles that were chosen to be reported. So, I was wrong but I think we can still feel confident about the theological points I made about this blind man being healed.

This may be totally inappropriate 😃 but as soon as I saw the truth of your observation, the scripture "he who has ears to hear let him hear" (Matthew 13:9) popped into my head!! I'm probably totally spiritializing this scripture but it is none the less befitting the last miracle of Jesus with a scripture admonishing people to listen to His words!! What do you think? 😄

@@MikeWinger I really wasn't trying to make make a fuss. I'm Christian but not a great Christian. I just asked the question for my own understanding. "Wasn't the soldier's ear the last healing that He did. If not why?" Kinda thing. I'm not interested in got you games. There is plenty about the Bible that I have gotten wrong. I was just trying to understand the chronology. No malice.

I have a degenerative fatal neuro muscular disease. It frustrates me so much when people tell me to pray for healing, as though I haven't been on my knees in tears pleading for God to heal me many times. They say the fact that I haven't been healed is somehow due to my faith not being strong enough. I have asked God for a cure within 10 years. I pray every day for a cure, not only for myself but for the many family members, including my brother and daughter who now suffer from the same illness. I know that His answer may be no. It will not affect my faith, whatever happens. There are far too many Christians who still think that if you are sick it is your lack of faith keeping you ill. I wish more people understood illness is not a sign that you aren't truly faithful. Sometimes being ill and still thanking God for every day he gives me, no matter how good or bad that day is, is more of a testament to a person's faith than those who get healed. Thank you for laying this out for us. Please remember me in your prayers.

Yep, been in those circles. It's a horrible burden to lay on someone who is already suffering! 😥😥
I don't know how things are going with you and your family now, because it's been a while since you posted here. I hope you are finding strength through the love of God our Father and the indwelling Holy Spirit.
I think one of the biggest problems with this attitude, that healing is ours and what we lack is faith, is that the *focus* is wrong.
I know that when you are sick, it's extremely difficult to *not* focus on getting your health back.
But, if God is to be glorified in us, our focus must be on Him, and His love and absolute goodness.

Joni Erickson went through this early in her journey as quadriplegic and finally gave up the idea of being healed in exchange for living for God's glory. She's done more in her lifetime to glorify God than I and most people will ever dream of. The light of God shines through her with every word she speaks. More power to you!

I love you comment about faith and healing. Now that I have made myself a student of the Bible, I cannot bring myself to listen the those very popular preachers out there. I'm speaking about the word of faith type preachers who causes people to become disenchanted with our most loving g God! Their teachings is that if you do not get what you want from God, you lack faith. And mis quoting scriptures by taking a verse, or even as little as a sentence and create doctrine is beyond my belief. I think they are either ignorant of the word of God, deceived, or and deceivers. You are so right about having a greater testimony by not giving up on God even after talking to Him about your condition for years. What ever the outcome keep believing in God. Those who says the it's a lack of faith prevents healing might one day have to answer the question, why aren't you being heal? It doesn't work for them. And we need to pray that they will stop all false teachings. God bless you for sharing, you echo my thoughts so clearly!

M dad was a humble, godly man, but he got ALS. And we prayed for healing for 2 years, and then he died. We had faith and I know God heard his prayers. Then people ask, “why didn’t God heal him?” The answer is: he did! It’s not always the way we want. My dad always said, “May God’s Will be done.” And he got the ultimate healing! He’s now in his eternal reward with Jesus!

The things Mike says about sickness and healing are true. I battled Leukemia the last 2.5 years. When I got the diagnosis, the Holy Spirit told me that I would be healed, but it would be a hard struggle. I understood that this meant there would be no immediate healing. I had a lot of Christian friends who would come to pray for an immediate healing, not understanding that my faith was in God's strength every day to make it through that day. That's were my faith was.
After 2.5 years I actually had the 'we don't know what to do anymore' talk with the doctors. All I could do was trust in Jesus. And some how, after all the struggles, I went into remission, and we could do a stem cell transplant. I'm now clean, no more leukemia. And I'm recovering better that the doctors expected.
And the amazing thing is how I have changed through the process, how my relationship with my wife has changed, and how my family has changed. God knew what He was doing when He allowed the leukemia and didn't perform an immediate healing.
Whatever you may be going through, just trust Jesus, and have faith that God can heal, but that if He doesn't, He will provide the end that He sees is best.
    God bless.

I appreciate this teaching. My husband died from stomach cancer and many well meaning believers claimed we weren’t tithing or there was hidden sin or lack of forgiving others etc. that led to his sickness and eventual death. I now see it was an attempt to cover their own bad theology and “cover” for Him as of we’re responsible for God’s PR. It was a stressful time and even my faith was shaken. But your statement that “Faith in God is also active even when you trust God when He doesn’t heal you” is solid. Our focus is eternal and our hope is a living hope.

Sorry to hear about your loss, and also about the pressure put on you by others.
Yes, our faith is *in God* as our Saviour, Father and Master. Faith isn't something to be *used* to get our prayers answered! To claim that it is, is an abuse of scripture.

I recognised when studying this that in the healings the person recognised that Jesus had not only the power but more importantly the authority to heal and so they did not demand but appealed to him for healing. They did not demand an outcome. Their faith was that they knew he was the Son of God and had the power and Authority to heal them. We must always approach Jesus knowing who he is and that he will always do what is good and what is right for us

    • @ebnphlo
      @ebnphlo ปีที่แล้ว +1

I would agree & add to that: when you look at the stories of people Jesus healed, they always had faith but they also had humility, recognizing they had NOTHING to offer God but their trust. And like you said, after we’ve done all we know to do, are we willing to surrender our desires to the sovereignty of God, without losing our trust if He doesn’t heal or deliver according to our requests?
It’s a hard thing to accept esp. when it’s a dear friend or loved one who passes away in spite of our prayers in humility & trust.
But much more so for those who are told somebody messed up the formula & that’s why their prayers weren’t answered.

I was just thinking today as I stroked my cat how perfectly made she is, not just for her survival, but for our pleasure. Soft, warm, tactile, not too small but not too big, making her a perfect size for living with us in our home. The way her head fits perfectly into my hand as i stroke her, it's as if she was made for relationship with us. It's a curious thing, our desire to seek out the companionship of animals, I mean even when we have family or friends for company, even when we have no need of their uses like pest control or guarding property, we get a kick out of that feeling when an animal shows trust in us, to take food from our hand or let us touch them for the first time. Animals, and pets in particular are a great gift, allowing us to see God's perfection in his creation up close!

Thank you so much for this teaching. I see it’s three years old. I prayed for healing for ten years for my daughter who loved and served the Lord. Just months prior to her passing God revealed to me that my trust and faith in him whether we get what we want or not is true faith. My battle that my faith wasn't strong enough had me feeling responsible for many years but it was honestly, those around me who are loving Christians, after she passed really still believe that. They don't claim to understand it but that is what has been taught. That if you have true deep faith you are healed. If it doesn't happen your faith is lacking somewhere. It is so damaging and isolating. Knowing that people who love you feel as if you had part in your loss and suffering. They feel sorry for me and love me but just can’t accept that their faith won’t heal them in the future or has kept them safe thus far. It’s in the Bible right? I so so appreciate this break down as I believe you are spot on. My daughter passed on her Birthday. I felt as if there was no coincidence in this. Her purpose had been completed. Now mine continues possibly just for this particular topic. Thanks for the help!

God is not a vending machine where you put enough faith coins in, your miracle falls out the bottom. God is our Heavenly Father. He knows what's good for us. Faith is when we trust that He knows what is best for us. We know He is CAPABLE of fulfilling our heart's desire, but He is wiser and knows what we REALLY need. Like Paul says about his thorn in his flesh, God allowed it to remain to keep Paul from becoming to boastful, and the country song, "I Thank God for Unanswered Prayer", there's a reason for that 'no' answer. Faith is trusting in God's love for us, and His omniscience.

Great teaching, thank you, Mike and team... Kitty cats and all 😍.
There's a clever play on words as far as Nazareth/Nazarene is concerned. Netzer in Hebrew is the same word for Nazareth and Branch.
Jer 23:5-6 speaks of a "righteous Branch" being raised up for David who shall "reign as king and...execute justice and righteousness..."
Isaiah 11:1 prophesies that "A shoot will come up from Jesse....a Branch will bear fruit."
Romans 1:3 Jesus is called a descendant of David whose father was Jesse.
It continues in vs 4 of Isaiah 11, "...with righteousness He will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. " This fits perfectly with the blind beggar.
A cloak in those days was essential to the owner - protected him from the elements. In effect, when he left his cloak, he left all he had to shelter himself with and ran to Jesus - verifies what Mike was saying.
Regarding the blindness, education for Hebrew boys in those days involved learning to read and recite the Torah (1st 5 books of the Bible). A blind boy/man was considered cursed as he was unable to learn the Torah or be educated. Possibly that's why he was told to "shut up"! Another great picture that all of us are cursed in our spiritual blindness but when Jesus opens our eyes, we are blessed (saved from condemnation).
What a clever, awesome God! Nothing is in Scripture arbitrarily.

New age loves Jesus but the wrong one the man-made version of him. Which is countless how many versions they have of Jesus. All False teachings. This new age is so deceitful.

It would be so easy to not take his teaching (and other people who don't share the same views I have) seriously, but seeing the way you spoke about that teaching really spoke to me. I learned more watching you approach him and his teaching than about the things you taught from Mark.

Awesome study. I was recently invited to a group who's leader was on the hyper-charismatic side. @Lon Spector I totally agree. some teachers will try and use scripture to back up their claims, although it is mostly a misrepresentation of what the word is actually saying. Jeremiah 29:11 is a classic example. I'm motivated to get deeper into the word to defend against these false teachings. There are many young adults in my area who are being drawn to these false teachers and are being deceived by false doctrines. It's hard seeing the blind being led by the blind. they are being taught to listen more to their "heart" than to read the Word. PLEASE PRAY FOR ME. I feel i am in a spiritual battle and I feel God is calling me to reach them.

I’ve also noticed that it’s very common to put your faith in healing, Gods ability to heal, your faith, the faith of the person praying, a certain prayer, a certain church, a certain ministry, etc but not in God. Most, if not all, of the healing in the New Testament is for Gods glory and to build people’s faith in God. God will not share his glory with another. Christians would probably see more healing if they encouraged faith in God instead of making idols out of themselves and mans ministry

He knows nothing about the holy ghost came a 2nd time during the mass Pentecostal revivals of the 40s and 50s and 60s and has never walked in that light just like most haven't...
They come against these false annointed trinitarian preachers of the word of faith movement falsely claiming to be the bride of Jesus christ....
Which is a total contradiction and withstanding the real truth.....because the holy ghost not only came during the mass Pentecostal revivals of the 40s and 50s and 60s to restore all things or all truths but the holy ghost also came to fulfill the marriage of the lamb and bride....
And during this time or generation the holy ghost divorced the espoused apostate catholic church corrupted by all her fornications and adulteries which she has made the whole world drunk with......but the holy ghost also chose a small Pentecostal non trinitarian church that baptizes in the name of Jesus Christ to be his bride....not the UPC church either....

Hello Mike, I don't know if you will read this but, I just wanted to tell you....
Thank you for having this youtube channel. I feel that God has led me to your channel so that I may learn so many things. I have always struggled to understand the bible. Not because I didn't believe in the word of God but, every time I would sit down to read, with almost all of the bible I would start to feel very overwhelmed and out of my depth. I'm so glad that you are doing this verse by verse study of Mark because it's been so helpful for me to understand what I am reading. I just wanted to let you know that I find this style of teaching very helpful and informative. I've struggled with learning disabilities through my life and coming here I've found that I can more easily digest the word of God and understand his word. Which is very important to me. So from one fellow follower of Christ Jesus to another thank you for taking the time to reach out to someone like me through our Lord Jesus.

I'm new to your channel and have been really enjoying your content on women in ministry , and am exploring your vids while eagerly waiting g for episode 9. Something that stands out to me in this topic is how you've said several times about faith not being a "substance" (or juju, haha), and I can't help but to keep thinking of Hebrews 11:1. "Now, faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.". My understanding of God's will for healing is that Jesus already healed us when he died on the cross and "took up our sins and bore our diseases", and then even said, "It is finished".
Everyone who came to him for healing was healed. He didn't turn away anyone. I know it says He couldn't do any good work in his own town, because of their unbelief. Jesus emphatically stated, "It IS My will to heal you" (Mark 1:40). So it is always His will for us to be healed. Of course none of us are exempt from getting sick, whether through an outright attack from the devil, or as a consequence of our actions, or more matter of factly, as a result of the fall. BUT, God still "works all things together for good" (Rom. 8:28), even if it wasn't something that was His will. Which I believe is the key. Yes, many times God uses someone's affliction, for His glory and great purpose, but I have experienced personally the healing power of the living God Who lives inside of me, when I received (key term) His healing for me from migraines. And it was a moment that I had at home, just between Jesus and me. I did get tested a few times a couple months after, but I kept speaking my faith and using my authority in Jesus's name, and I am no longer afflicted! I know plenty of people have even more miraculous testimonies than that too. Faith can make you seem a little crazy sometimes to people, when you are, "calling things that are not as though they are"(Roman's 4:17), but when it's about something that you know is according to God's will, it really does move mountains( Mark 11:23,24)!

Mike, you are correct in your assessment of the Word of Faith movement. They see faith as a *power* that we can wield by our words.
I was part of this movement for a number of years, and I came to realize that once you have the formula off pat, you don't actually need God at all.
Your faith is in the formula, the philosophy, and in *your own faith.* It's metaphysics, in the same way that the book "The Secret" is metaphysics.
It's about as heretical as you can get. In fact, the movement is worse, theologically speaking, than the stuff the Mormon "church" teaches.
