La Palma volcano: Drone video shows "lava lakes" flowing as earthquakes rattle island

  • Dozens of earthquakes were reported on the Spanish island of La Palma over the past couple of days, while red-hot lava continued to flow from the Cumbre Vieja volcano.
    Drone footage showed the increased activity of the volcano after part of the crater collapsed and unleashed a cascade of faster-moving and thicker lava.
    One official said the crater was "like a dam" because when the wall collapsed, fiery molten rock poured out from a "lava lake" inside.
    Roughly 1,000 buildings have been destroyed since the eruption began on September 19 and 6,000 people have been evacuated.

    I know that it's a horrible tragedy for the local population, but it's still so beautiful. The volcano ash is a great fertilizer for the plants, so in few years there can grow an amazing forest.

      @Chimera_Photography 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      A few years? Try 200-400 years for just plants. It takes 1000 years or more for an ecosystem to develop/return after being ravaged by a volcano…

      @CasuallyObservant 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@Chimera_Photography - I think he is referring to the loose ash that has fallen on everything. It will be good for the soil, and the plants can use the nutrients as long as the plants were left standing, unharmed and not suffocated or burned by the falling powder. The molten lava of course, will not allow growth on it for untold numbers of years.

The volcano is a mile wide. It’s all a matter of speculation and opinion how large the tsunami would be if a large chunk did fall. Some say it would be large,some say small. Pressure underneath the volcano has increased, earthquakes are about every 15 minutes,last I heard. Numerous fissures are affecting Co2 levels much more than humans ever could.

      @@user-vm7cp2kh1e The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator-who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. Isn't it "Las Palmas" in the plural? There's more than one palm....of course not now. Glad your drone got through the heat okay!

      La Palma VS Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. They are different locations within Canaries islands.

    Too much attention is being placed on what is dumping into the Atlantic. The MAJOR FAULT LINE is inland and back of the eruption only 3 miles away. That is where the rubber meets the road. The conduit that has been there since the 1971 Earthquake and minor eruption should be getting more attention. Sorry if your too young to know the finer points. The Navy sent me there 40 years ago when this cover shot was taken. La Palma has always been that "Pot on the Stove" Now that burner was left on and the pot is breaking apart because it was empty. If you live Coastal Atlantic or within 200 miles, do you need to be told twice. When this Island fractures, Close to ONE TRILLION METRIC TONNES drop. The first plate is 3.5 miles down. The water displacement sends one wave. The second is an impact wave from the 3.5 mile mark. The third is the second acceleration displacement wave. Before it hits the 11 to 15 mile down level, the first reverb wave from the African continent gets in there. Not enough to do any significant damage but becomes a carrier wave. Then the 11 to 15 mile wave takes over. This one will raise sea level long enough to take the Mariannas Trench out of the role as an emergency break. The Northern end of the waves will hit Volcano Active Iceland like a runaway freight train then the east coast of South America then Atlantic Canada and upper States. Shortly after that Central America says Via Con Dios Amigo. Don't really have to explain much more than that this will happen within seconds and a few minutes of each other. These waves will be moving at about 400 to 500 mph when they hit with two of them being a double tap. Supported by the one from the 11 to 15 mile depth
    That's what you learn within Marine Engineering kids.

    Kilauea, the Iceland volcanoes, La Palma, and all the other volcanoes erupting around the world. It's hard to believe this is the planet I live on. Deadly and amazing all at the same time. I guess the good thing is that Yellowstone has been pretty quiet and the casualties have been next to none as far as I know. Stay safe out there.

    That's a lot of ash. It will be a cold wet spring next year, & the circulating ash around the planet should lower the avg temperature a degree or so. Will do a haul out & bottom anti-foul paint there next year. Will happily support their economy. Beautiful place.

    I know I'm generalizing but the fact that people thought it was a good idea to build homes here just blows my mind. This is one of the few natural disasters that dont come to you so maybe its not worth taking the chance living next to it.
