    DSL seems more compressed but still sounds really good. 800 has more life, more openness yet aggressive, amazing top “sizzle” along with amazing note definition. Great demo!

      I hear that too. The 800 just sounds ready to be on a record as is. 😄 I feel like the Ultra red channel with the sd-1 is to much. The classic Crunch channel with sd-1 sounds a little more open I think.

    I have a JCM2000 and i was watching this to see if i should upgrade and honestly i dont think I will. I do love the tone i get with my amp and i dont think the JCM800 is enough of an improvement to warrant the purchase. So thank you! Awesome playing too!

    Y'know what... When you boost them with the SD-1, they sound almost identical. That pedal (or a good Tubescreamer) is really the secret sauce for Marshall amps.

  • @Briman24

    If you want to get the dsl to sound EXACTLY like the 800, you have to boost the green clean crunch chanel. The red chanel had less definition and more fizzle. Try it and you will be blown away. Make sure clean chanel is in crunch (button in) and set gain to around 2 oclock.

    They sound so close and yes the 800 wins at getting that one tone. The 2000 get's close plus a fantastic clean channel, foot switchable, effects loop, and way more gain. But again, for that 1 Tone nothing beats an 800! 2203/4, not the 2205/10. Fantastic video comparison. Just discovered your channel and digging it! Keep em coming!

    To my ears the 800 has a fuller fatter sound but the DSL handled the sd1 just a little bit better. It sounded less muddy than the 800 due to it having a thinner sound without the boost. Both awesome amps. The best sound i ever got out of a Marshall was plugging in my les paul straight into a 50 watt 2204 with 6550's... Man I wanted to steal that amp! Great video , he makes both amps sound really good! But my personal experience with various Marshall amps? I see alot of people in the comments section favoring the 800? I bought my jcm800 2203 new in the late 80's , back then everybody hated them? I was even told a few times back then that only a plexi was a 'real' marshall?? I was looking for more gain than the plexi and the jcm800 had more.... But still not enough ( for me )? It needed boosted ( ts-9 ) or something else? I found something else , but still wanted a Marshall in the fold , so I got a jcm900 sl-x ? It had more gain than the 800 but didn't really sound like I wanted? My last and final Marshall I will own is a jcm2000 dsl50 , If your good with changing settings it can sound exactly like an 800 for old ( AC/DC ) tones , But it also has higher gain settings and can get really good and if that's not enough for you,the jcm2000 dsl is pedal friendly ,you can go as heavy as you want! And the jcm2000 series are still cheap , for now?

    Great video. Very good comparison. I agree, the 2203/2204’s along with the original super leads are the best amps Marshall ever made. The DSL sounds pretty good but doesn’t have the depth and 3D sound of an 800. The DSL also has an annoying top end screechy sound.

Question - what's your opinion about 2203 vs 2204 sound wise? Just wondering if the 2203 sound can be captured by something smaller/lower powered. Cheers!

    The tubes make a big difference in the DSL's bottom end... KT's are known for the bigger bottom end, almost like 6L6's. I never played or owned a 6550 tube amp, do they compare more the 6L6 or EL flavor? The DSL doens't sound bad at all since I like the 6L6 tone. But the 800 as a more in your face punch that I prefer in this A/B. I wonder if the DSL with EL's would change its voicing. Awesome as always.

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      6550s are basically ”military grade” EL34s. A bit more sturdy and bigger headroom so the low end stays a bit tighter when cranked 💪.

    • @Purpleleader1
      @Purpleleader1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, a big difference with KT77 tubes:) Best upgrade for a Dsl JCM2000 ever, a more chunky green channel. It was my "secret" crunch weapon for many many gigs for years, only used the green channel (crunch). I started using JJ KT77 in my DSL head in 2007 or 2008 and will never use other kinds of power tubes in that amp, will not ever go back to EL34 in it..even though I love EL34 tubes/sound generally (biasing is easy on that amp on its backside, check out "Eurotubes" website). Many couldn't believe how good that crunch sound was for a DSL with a SG special and a V30 4x12, acdc type of hard riffing. My Jcm800 2203 and 2204 with EL34 are also favorites but might have an amp tech to put 6550 tubes in one of them (maybe a Frank Levi 34 mod as well). Anyways all of them keepers. DSL JCM2000 is underrated but a killer amp I think. Rocknroll ! Cheers from Norway

    Hi Euge, I just discovered your videos and I think they're great! You are such a great player and your videos are very informative. I just subscribed to your channel. Keep up the great videos!
    On the subject of this particular video, I used to own a JCM900 and exchanged it for JCM2000 about 20 years ago since I felt like the JCM2000 had more channel/sound options than the 900. I noticed in your video that you have the JCM2000 on the Ultra Gain channel however I personally prefer playing it on the Classic Gain channel and using my overdrive pedals for the gain (mostly tube screamer and/or OCD pedal). I feel like the distortion sounds better to me that way. Something about the way the overdrive pedals push the amp's clean channel...sounds more organic to me. Do you have any thoughts/preferences on this?
    Thanks again for the great content!

  • @MichaelDespairs
    @MichaelDespairs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For me, sadly, the JCM800 is better than the JCM2000, as I own a DSL40C. I'm guessing the 800 has more upper low frequencies left in the gain stages which saturates the tubes and makes palm mutes sustain and sound more fluid. This helps the fundamental note come through cleaner and even makes the guitar feel easier to play. This is just a theory though. When you turn up the gain on a rectifier the guitar practically plays itself and that amp leaves tons of lows in the gain stages.

      @@EugeValovirta230V That is very true , the gear is important to have a good sound but 80% i think it comes from the player . If we look at Y.J. Malmsteen for example , in his good old days from the 80's , those 50 watt Plexi / JMP style Marshall amps don't have much gain and sustain , and are very hard to play and those pickups DiMarzio HS3 on his Strat are very low output , but even though he had a great tone because he knows how to play , he knows how to make that guitar & amp sound good . If you like the sound my suggestion is take it to maintenance. I usually take my amps to a qualified amp tech regularly ’cos tube amps (especially my old 800s) needs regular maintenance like old cars.
      I can’t suggest any year ’cos all amps, especially old Marshalls could differ a lot from each other. I’ve played tens, probably hundreds, of 800s during my career (rental backline on festivals, fly in shows etc.) and some have been fantastic and some not 😎. The new re-issues are really solid so if you don’t have a change of trying before buying I’d go with the new ones.
      But of you happen to find a mid 80s Scandinavian edition I’d go for that ’cos they’re the most badass 800s I’ve ever played and I have two of them 😎.

However the next day after I sold it, I wanted it back and still miss it to this day. That being said the 2000 is much more versitile. Footswitchable to a fantastic clean channel. It has way more gain than the 800. A deeper bottom end. Plus switch to the green channel with an SD-1 it's thick and meaty. Great demo bro. Hey Euge!!! I really dig the videos man.
    Just got my Marshall's JCM2000 after wanting one for longer than I care to admit, since they came out. 😆 I found that the Ultra Gain Red channel basically sounds almost exactly like the Classic Crunch channel with an SD -1. Switching back and forth. It's like they baked in an SD-1 in the Ultra Red Channel. I love it, unless you want tighten it up a little bit. Been even then, I feel it's a compromise and you lose a little bit of the original tone.
    Mine came with some JJ 34L's. I freaking hated them in the amp. Almost sounded broken to me (even with a good bias). I put in some Svetlana EL34's...100% times better!!! Only problem is a little loser low end. I really want to try some KT77's. I hear they're the best of both worlds.
    Any opinions on which power tubes have a tighter low end? (not 34 L 🤮) I'm curious about the JJ EL34 ll as well.
    Just tried out the JJ ECC83MG's in the pre-amp section, which are just mid-gain ECC83's. I really really like them. 👍

      I tend to really love the Marshall tone without a drive. But I hate the loose low end and prefer the playability of a drive. I'm basically trying to achieve a tight Marshall sound by changing tubes around instead of using a drive. 😅

      Can’t argue with personal preferences.
      I’ve been really glad that many people think that they suck, especially when real hi gain amps first came, ’cos I was able to buy 800s really cheap. The highest price I paid for one back in the day was 300€ 😎.
      I like the amps a lot and I don’t quite understand why anybody would care what other people like? Have a great day man!

      @@EugeValovirta230V I don't care what others like, but I do care about evolved next gen, objectively superior amps that have fewer limitations, more versatility and higher gain being denigrated in favor of the now sacrosanct, holier than thou, get on your knees and worship, jcm800, which I don't believe is that great of an Amp, is one dimensional and requires noisy external devices to artificially coax an acceptable amount of gain. I'm tired of all the trendy jcm800 bandwagon worship of a fairly limited, overrated Amp while better, technologically advanced amps never seem to compare to the impractical almost unusable jcm800. I could never get a good sound out of one of them at realistic volume levels and everybody I knew in the 80s wished they had it modded or a different higher gain amp

      Good😎.
      I like them a lot and been using them from the 90s and always get the sound I want. I have other amps too and have used many amps on the many albums I’ve recorded during my career and I always sound like me. I guess it’s not about the gear but what you do with it.
      On my latest solo album I used a few 800s, 1987x, 2000 TSL and 5150 and they sound great and did the job 😎. Here’s a video I did about the matter if you’re interested: th-cam.com/video/JmXa_giKL9c/w-d-xo.html

      @@EugeValovirta230V wow I watched your videos, I'm going to subscribe. Obviously you're going to be able to coax greater sounds of an Amp with lesser gain than most others like me who have to have the extra gain to get a sound, just like when other players at sound check got plugged into Eddie's original rig but they couldn't make it sound like he did. If you give a grand prix driver a stock Chevrolet he would outrun most anybody else if they were driving a race car

    Does the JCM 2000 have a master volume?
