Voiceplay is overall more creative and slightly higher quality, but when i saw Pentatonix pull the megaphone for the solo in Bohemain Rhapsody, *chef's kiss*
i loved Pentatonix but they seem like they got full of themselves. Also I think every single person in Voiceplay has a better overall voice. It's really not fair. Its different styles but its really an NBA vs college basketball team
I've recently started listening to voiceplay and I love them. I think alot of fans have a crush on Geoff's bass voice. But have to give the entire group credit they all do a fantastic job. Hopefully we'll hear more from them.
@@TazaTime I have to agree. Geoff was the first one to catch my attention and draw me in with the bass line, but I've grown more and more appreciative of Eli's voice as I've heard more. I love all of VoicePlay though.
My money's on VoicePlay. Before I ever heard of them, I was a PTX fan from their Sing Off days and after. They had that 'spark', and you could see them growing on the show each week, then after the show their catalogue developed in interesting ways, very inventive, always with that spark. When Avi left, something seemed to go out of the group besides his rich bass. Don't know if this is accurate, but it 'felt' like Avi wanted to stay more grounded in the real world, while the original 3 wanted to build on the fame as fast as possible, and Kevin wasn't necessarily driven like that but went along for it, or could have gone the slower pace also. It just seemed like the fun they were having with acapella transitioned into the 'music business', emphasis on the second word. With some notable exceptions, like 90s Dance Medley was fun, like the older days. But something just went out of it with Avi's departure, and more than his deeper-than-Matt's bass. Hard to describe, but the feeling is there, and is very real. VoicePlay, on the other hand, feels like they still have that fun element. They're a more mature band, not just from the ages of the original members, but while PTX won Sing Off in 2011, VP changed their name to that in 2012, and were 42Five since the 90s. Geoff's deep bass isn't the only 'speed' he can sing at, and he can get up into a respectable tenor range, plus he can shift _quickly_ between registers, in the same phrase even. In their Little Mermaid medley, dude does a nearly 3-octave slide down! Layne's a great beatboxer, and singer on occasion. Eli has a raspy tenor that could put him out front in any rock band he wanted. They've had some members come and go (former members include Scott, Tony, James, Earl, J.None, currently they're Geoff, Eli, Layne, Cesar, with a short list of featured singers in the 5th slot), but it didn't have the devastating effect that Avi's departure had on PTX (and maybe some of their departures did at the time, but I'm just going by how it feels now). VP kept that spark that PTX lost. They're a little heavy on the theatrical for my taste, but if that's the process that keeps it fun and inventive, then keep funding that greasepaint, costuming and set design budget! Maybe the difference is that VP is still running their direction based on what pleases and interests them musically, while PTX seems to be a bit more about the business and their standing in it. And if any of that sounds like an unfair criticism of PTX, I sincerely apologize, as it was not my intent to slam them, but to try and put a finger on how I see the two groups, without continuing to say 'spark' over and over. Both are very talented, always give a good time, and are easy on the ears. But in comparison, there's just a 'fun spark' that VP still (and probably always will) have, whereas PTX used to have that, or at least to a larger degree than they do now. When someone's having fun, it shows. Also shows when they're not having as much as they used to.
Pretty much totally agree. Much earlier on I didn't put Voiceplay at the top of the obvious A Capella triangle (Home Free), but honestly, of their later stuff, I think I might. The arrangement and performance Voiceplay just released of Whisky is just pinnacle level. The most unique take on the song I have heard to date, and so musically interesting and beautiful. I keep imploring them to do another Sea Shanty. Home Free's Shanty is a blast, too.
@@MrJdsenior Totally agree on 'Whiskey in the Jar'! Top shelf version of the old classic (see what I did there?). Voiceplay relies on direct funding of their productions versus working for a Big Corporate entity. As such, VP self-produces and therefore maintains all artistic control and ownership of their art. I can listen to PTX but I support VP and Geoff and Pattycake through their respective Patreon accounts because of what they produce. I enjoy having the interactions, to the extent I participate, but you know they're doing what they love, how they want to produce it, and I think that makes all the difference.
I would say you are correct. I started a die hard PTX fan (and I still enjoy them), but VoicePlay has transitioned to my favorite. Every time they need to find a new member they find someone wonderful! I also think they survived the change so easily because they have always collaborated with others. Having revolving people come through is part of the gig with them, even when they had 5 full time members. I also absolutely love their theatrics. I love musicals, so their song choices are always top notch for me. And I also agree with all the sentiments about the bass roll. Matt is a great singer, but he can't go as low.
Both are awesome! Voiceplay is more multi-dementional! They can do anything in any style and still make it uniquely their own. And their intertainment factor is off the charts! Listening to them is my 'happy place'!
I've always been a PTX fan, ever since the Sing-Off, but lately kind of leaning more towards Voice Play. (And to my all time favorite, Home Free.) Both Home Free and Voice Play have a greater sense of fun, and are more entertaining to watch and listen to, while never sacrificing musical excellence. You just feel good after hearing or watching them. There's no doubt PTX is fabulous, with incredibly talented members. But they're not really 'fun' (at least, to me).
This is exactly how I think of them. PTX has amazing harmonies and I think they may be the more talented vocalists, but they're missing the "it" factor they used to have. VP puts together the more fun arrangements and you can tell they're having a much better time making them compared to PTX.
@@tonyfrance4100 i think both groups have different goals. I feel like PTX is really looking to get more and more famous. Their ethic work and crazy schedules over the last decade proved they want to be the next big thing and that didn't fit well with Avi's lifestyle I think. They are still unknowned to so many people. As for VP I don't have the same vibes from them at all. They are having mad fun and don't seem to look for fame and that makes them even more enjoyable to watch them. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they do want to reach Hollywood.
Writing those arrangements is a talent all of its own and for VoicePlay it is a talent within the group. Almost ALL of their songs are arranged by either Geoff (bass), Layne (beatbox) or Eli (tenor). Exception is for when they feature a female singer. The guys tend to add in another arranger on those who they feel focuses more on the female voice than they do.
I think these two groups can not be compared to each other .... they are both the best in their own way and style 💓💓🤗...started listening to Pentatonix in 2014 but I still never get tired of their songs on the other hand voice play is something else 💕....my favorite is the little mermaid medley song 🤗🤗💕💓
I have to go with Voiceplay. I love that they feature more of the group as leads in different songs, especially Geoff's bass. Plus, their videos are so much fun to watch. I love how creative they get on each one.
I love PTX, Voiceplay and Home Free equally. They are amazing in each their own ways. But I don't understand why "This is Halloween" has a million more views than "Oogie Boogie Song". 🤔🤔
voiceplay will always have a special place in my heart and the incredible vocals and utter silliness they have as a group. not to mention their videos are hilarious and always have a voiceplay twist whether its cesar with his iconic fan or layne and his carrots. pentatonix are amazing dont get me wrong but for me voiceplay is levels above!
Love both groups so so much. PTX are a force to be reckoned with and they have earned all the fame they have. Their harmonies and arrangements are amazing and I'm blown away every time. Voiceplay are amazing and underrated and they're rightfully gaining recognition. They have a real sense of community and friendship and I feel it watching their performances.
Both groups are fantastic. In my opinion Voiceplay is better. They are more well rounded performers (acting out parts, expressions and costumes...) and they sing with more emotion than Pentatonix.
Pentatonix are hugely popular with theatre kids, which is very ironic, since they are one of the only a capella groups out there that don't do theatrical videoclips or performances - with the rare exception (Making Christmas, Daft Punk, Love Again). PTX basically is the epitome of success - don't be as out there as you can - just do pop and what's current.
I think Voiceplay has taken the mantle from PTX recently with Hoist the Colours and Halo Theme on a whole new level. PTX peaked before Avi left, though they are still making some great music. Voiceplay just keeps getting better and better.
Sorry, no mantle was ever passed. PTX has a very, very firm grip on that mantle. Here are the release statistics (I haven't included anything under 100K, nor anything prior to June 2021): PTX: The Prayer - 2.8M views, released Oct. 29; I Just Called to Say I Love You - 1.1M views on official video, released Oct 22, 530K views on Visualizer, released Oct 1 for a total of 1.6M views; A Little Space ft. Ateez - 2.2M views, released Aug 20; Butter x Dynamite - 4.7M views, released Aug 17. Even their Behind the Scenes look at The Prayer has 361K views, released Nov 5. VoicePlay: Friends on the Other Side - 448K views, released on October 15th; Halo theme - 246K views, released Oct. 1; Hoist the Colors - 958K views, released Sept 17; Butter - 372K views, released June 25. Numbers don't lie.
@@elizabethfelet4743 They are less popular, but that does not mean they are putting out lower quality music. There are many factors unrelated to quality which impact popularity. In my opinion, the quality of music Voiceplay has put out over the last 2 years is significantly better than that of pentatonix.
@@natebaker3672 Agree to disagree then. In my opinion, PTX has grown far and above anything that VoicePlay has put out, and continues to amaze and astonish. Again in my opinion, Voice Play is gimmicky and cannot match the arrangement abilities of PTX, nor the harmonics. Different strokes for different folks. I respect that you prefer VP, so it's good that VP has a devoted fan.
@@elizabethfelet4743 Lately VP's arrangements are more complex and more beautiful. PTX may have a slight edge in overall vocal talent, especially down a member, but VP easily has a better bass. The arrangement is the difference. PTX has gone to much more straightforward arrangements lately. They haven't done anything touching songs like Halo or Hoist the Colours since Avi was in the group. I love PTX. I have seen them in concert with Avi which was an outstanding concert. No disparaging their amazing talent. VP is just on a different level arrangement wise.
@@natebaker3672 again, agree to disagree. The Prayer, Making Christmas, Mu Favorite Things, I Just Called To Say I Love You and their entire 2 new albums are all masterclasses in arranging. But you do you.
In mid October, I came in through Geoff Castellucci's Monster Mash, then hit VP and Hoist the Colours, was thoroughly wowed by whatever I heard of theirs. Found PTX and Hallelujah and Mary Did You Know? Thought that they are wonderful but a touch behind what VP is doing these days. Just about everything I hear is better than the last. I'm glad to have Cesar as a member and would happily take Omar Cardona and Ashley Diane although I have enjoyed the featured guests. Geoff's voice is something else - butter mixed with caramel. Elie's voice is so variable and can be used in so many ways. Layne is the best beat-boxer period, always improving skills as witnessed by Dream On. Based on the choices here I would give Christmas to PTX because it is one of my favorites of theirs, but as far as it goes, the rest lands with VoicePlay.
Used to be quite into PTX when they first gained popularity, but fell out after a while due to certain songs losing emotion. Can't fault them on technique and skill though. Voiceplay is my favorite at the moment. Every single song is brought in a cheery, fun and creative way, with great arrangements each time.
Voiceplay has Action songs, Pentatonix Disney Songs, Voiceplay has Casual Songs, Pentatonix Christmas, Pentatonix again. So all told Pentatonix. Geoff Castellucci and his really low bass make things for a lot of viewers. Maybe if the Disney arrangement included "Hellfire" from the Hunchback of Notre Dame, it would be an even result.
Geoff ia amazing, out of any comparison, his incredible bass voice is an impossible. I always love Pentatonix, but once I heard VoicePlay, I really flashed!
no one is saying? hm no one is saying it okay then: as much as i like ptx, their videos are boring to me and i feel like the majority of their music is christmas related. Like they sound great, they sell well but voiceplay to me is just more interesting to watch and are also more likely to feature new sounds and people to keep an ever evolving freshness to them
I honestly think PTX didn't get worse... they were so much better than other groups... and then VOICEPLAY came out. Its just the talent level all around. Voiceplay is more interesting, blend together better, better singers both individually and as a group
They are both brilliant to listen to, however, when it comes to overall experience, including visual production and story telling - Voiceplay is in a league of its own, they are a complete, mesmerised, breathtaking package.
When I heard my first voiceplay song it touched my soul. Hearing ptx songs it isn't the same. For example when I listen to the original Halleluja I allways have to cry and when I listen to ptx Halleluja I feel nothing. Maybe their songs are sung perfectly but they don't touch me.
I found PTX first, but to me, VP is much more creative and daring, and they always appear to be having fun. I think PTX suffered greatly when Avi left, because it was about then they seemed (to me) to lose that sense of fun. Don't know if those facts are related, but they definitely lost their edge (to me, anyway). So now, I have to go with VP.
PTX is a shell of itself without Avi. Avi was definitely the grounding member. But, we still get to enjoy his awesome voice and arrangements with his solo work! Avi, Geoff, Tim, and Mitch are the most irreplaceable people and singers, arguably ever.
Only reason Pentatonix has more views is because of the song which is already a great hit. Do not get me wrong , Pentatonix is good , but Voiceplay is better.
I can see your point but that doesn’t explain Pentatonix’s Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I haven’t really done any “viewership” comparisons and while Hallelujah is simply a favorite of so many people PTX also has a number of other songs that crack the 100M viewership mark. Honestly, I don’t know where Voiceplay stands on those numbers
Both groups are so great. I discovered VP recently and I had so much pleasure especially with their "hoogie boogie man" rendition I can't get over this one. And also "Can't help fall in love" is soooo beautiful and different from everything I have heard before. Like I want their version to play at my wedding. But PTX embraces everything that I love about music. They make everything sound better and I've been following them since day 1. Yes Avi's departure was rough but they are definitely in their best right now and Matt is amazing and they are having way much more fun with him. Their dynamic is precious if you look out their PTX experience episodes. I will always be a Pentaholic. I want both group to collaborate.
The musical arrangements + the creative settings, outfits, makeup to provide atmosphere make Voiceplay a favorite for me -- Dream On, Bruno, and My Mother Told Me are ones I watch/listen to over and over. Rotating guests keep things fresh and provide a little different feel for the ensemble of voices. That said, Pentatonix also has some masterpieces I come back to regularly -- Hallelujah of course, and also Prayer.
Well... Voiceplay has Geoff so... :D + they are really funny (I don't like too crazy and emotional musicians usually but they are just special) and their arrangements are really great. ❤
I agree VoicePlay takes this totally. Avi may have helped Ptx, but the strength of the upper voices in Voice play still run away with it. And nobody can out bass Geoff.
Voiceplay all the way. They are so much more complex, rich, full and creative. And they are FUN. Ptx is good and there are a couple of songs of theirs I have downloaded, but Voiceplay just drags you in and sticks in your head. I mean, they got me to love a disney song (let's DO talk about Bruno). Ptx has gotten less interesting along the way, maybe a result of just becoming part of the commercial machine. Voiceplay however does not have a record deal so they are not beholden to the machine. They are free to do what they want and let their creativity shine. The camaraderie within VP is evident and every one of them is just standout.
Both are very different groups with different ways of arranging, Pentatonix focus more on being more of a normal band that happens to sing with their voices only and Voiceplay focus primarily on impressing their audience in every song, usually with Geoff’s range. So it’s directed to very different audiences and different styles.
@@FernyBass Exactly. Voiceplay's channel has less than a million subs while PTX has 19 million. Just seems unfair to ask people to choose when the odds are so against them. Just love and appreciate your favs whoever they are.
Same thing I said in a comment for "True Colors" (Voiceplay) - Which color of the rainbow is most beautiful? People can have their favorites, but they'd be fools not to appreciate the beauty of all the rest as well. Skelly, you were right to put quotation marks around "vs". This is more of a showcase/highlight reel. And well-ordered. Thank you!
I discovered VP before Pentatonix. As a result, I've never been able to connect with Pentatonix. Although undeniably talented, I find Pentatonix very mainstream and easily dissolves into similar music. VP demands attention. They are unique and organic. They don't just sing, they emerge themselves into the music. They truly are the theatre kids of accapella.
I have been a Pentatonix fan since the competition but for some reason don't remember Voiceplay on that competition but saw it on your channel. I'm a Voiceplay fan now for real
PTX has an unreal blend that no other group has. That being said Voiceplay's arrangements are super creative and make you sit slack-jawed in awe the first time you listen to a song. Also they always go all out with makeup and costumes in their music videos. That gives them the edge for me.
They both do a good job on their song choices. However, in my opinion, if you are going to ask who is better then have them sing the same song. Singing different songs and then asking who did better doesn’t make sense.
Pentatonix “Vs” VoicePlay 2 out now

I have to go with Voiceplay. I love that they feature more of the group as leads in different songs, especially Geoff's bass. Plus, their videos are so much fun to watch. I love how creative they get on each one.
I love Pentatonix's version of "Hallelujah," but I love Voiceplay better.
I’m totally the opposite here, but respect
I love PTX, Voiceplay and Home Free equally. They are amazing in each their own ways.
But I don't understand why "This is Halloween" has a million more views than "Oogie Boogie Song". 🤔🤔
I was wondering the same thing. Its good, but Oogie Boogy is ludicrous.
Easy answer. This is Halloween is impressive, funny, and, most importantly, everybody gets to shine. :)
voiceplay will always have a special place in my heart and the incredible vocals and utter silliness they have as a group. not to mention their videos are hilarious and always have a voiceplay twist whether its cesar with his iconic fan or layne and his carrots. pentatonix are amazing dont get me wrong but for me voiceplay is levels above!
I used to think Pentatonix was best, but Voiceplay has tighter harmonies, better production, and all around better sound.
Pentatonix : We have a group... voiceplay: We have a Geoff
So True! My thoughts exactly.
Both groups are fantastic. In my opinion Voiceplay is better. They are more well rounded performers (acting out parts, expressions and costumes...) and they sing with more emotion than Pentatonix.
I love voice play no matter they have my heart ❤
Pentatonix has a much smoother texture. I like that for my dad days.
VoicePlay much more upbeat for upbeat days.
VoicePlay has a knack of evoking so many emotions all at once
It's VoicePlay all the way for me.
VoicePlay and Geoff Castellucci!
Is there really any question you just can’t compare these two!‼️Voice Play hands down ♥️
Pentatonix are hugely popular with theatre kids, which is very ironic, since they are one of the only a capella groups out there that don't do theatrical videoclips or performances - with the rare exception (Making Christmas, Daft Punk, Love Again). PTX basically is the epitome of success - don't be as out there as you can - just do pop and what's current.
Definitely vote for Voiceplay!!!! Much more musically diverse and complex. And while Pentatonix is good, VP is much better.
VoicePlay all day!
Here are the release statistics (I haven't included anything under 100K, nor anything prior to June 2021):
PTX:
The Prayer - 2.8M views, released Oct.
VoicePlay:
Friends on the Other Side - 448K views, released on October 15th; Halo theme - 246K views, released Oct.
Voiceplay’s harmony is tighter and they’re more expressive. PTX not so much, they’re “commercial”. There’s nothing that draws you in.
Pentatonix gives me goosebumps, but Voiceplay's arrangements are so crazy creative! Both absolutely amazing!
Geoff ia amazing, out of any comparison, his incredible bass voice is an impossible. I always love Pentatonix, but once I heard VoicePlay, I really flashed!
Voiceplay combines harmony and humor to the perfection.
no one is saying? hm no one is saying it okay then: as much as i like ptx, their videos are boring to me and i feel like the majority of their music is christmas related.
Voiceplay wins for me personally, mainly because their bass, beatboxer, and baritone are better, but PTX has great tenors in their group.
Agree :).
Voiceplay are more Creative....
They have to be
They are equally as talented tho
Sure
They are both brilliant to listen to, however, when it comes to overall experience, including visual production and story telling - Voiceplay is in a league of its own, they are a complete, mesmerised, breathtaking package.
Besides voicplay has tons of experience as they are doing this since 1997
When I heard my first voiceplay song it touched my soul. Hearing ptx songs it isn't the same. For example when I listen to the original Halleluja I allways have to cry and when I listen to ptx Halleluja I feel nothing. Maybe their songs are sung perfectly but they don't touch me.
Most tend to agree that PTX hallelujah is the best rendition of the song.
i love both bands but im a way bigger fan of the work voiceplay ahs done and im also a huge fan of goeff.gotta give it to vp
Voiceplay plus plus !!
grew up on pent, but when i heared geoff in VP omg they became my new favorite group
Voice play just has. Well Lane. Geoff and Eli.
Also Mitch is just a beast.
VoicePlay is so much better
I found VoicePlay first. They have always been No. 1 for me 😍🥰😍🥰🥰
I’m more of a music theater person so I like Voiceplay, but they’re both amazing.
Both are great, but Voiceplay are way more charismatic and creative. Also way more versatile on the types of music genere they play
To me voiceplay have more humor, heart/ warmth...
They both are rqually as good. I love both of their sounds. Depends what im in the mood for
They are booth outstanding in their own right. There is no reason to pick one over the other! I can enjoy both!!
Voice Play hands down...
Voiceplay all the way
Definitely Voiceplay because it they have the king of subharmonic and the king of inhale and exhale singing from Lyane Stein.
Both are very different groups with different ways of arranging, Pentatonix focus more on being more of a normal band that happens to sing with their voices only and Voiceplay focus primarily on impressing their audience in every song, usually with Geoff’s range. So it’s directed to very different audiences and different styles.
Pentatonix's arrangements are far more complex which is why they won two Grammy's for them. The only vocal group to ever win any for arrangement
@@marykuettner752 Yeah, and they still have a way different goal from Voiceplay, which makes it pointless to compare them.
@@FernyBass Exactly. Voiceplay's channel has less than a million subs while PTX has 19 million. Just seems unfair to ask people to choose when the odds are so against them. Just love and appreciate your favs whoever they are.
@@marykuettner752 yeah
@@marykuettner752 they have 19 million because they're simply better
Voice play is the best 👌
I've loved Pentatonix, but Voiceplay has taken over as my favorite
Same thing I said in a comment for "True Colors" (Voiceplay) - Which color of the rainbow is most beautiful? People can have their favorites, but they'd be fools not to appreciate the beauty of all the rest as well.
Skelly, you were right to put quotation marks around "vs". This is more of a showcase/highlight reel. And well-ordered. Thank you!
VoicePlay is by far my favorite group. Geoff their bass is so smooth in his amazing range.
I love both groups. Each has their own style and take on songs. I don't choose, I just enjoy both, it is not a competition.
Voice play is excellent 👈👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Both, but Voiceplay!
Eli's voice, VoicePlay, is to die for, though...
Still like Voiceplay more. They’re more real and diverse.
Both groups are very talented but my vote goes to VoicePlay!!
Voiceplay!!!
I have been a Pentatonix fan since the competition but for some reason don't remember Voiceplay on that competition but saw it on your channel. I'm a Voiceplay fan now for real
VOICEPLAY ALL THE WAY
PTX has an unreal blend that no other group has. That being said Voiceplay's arrangements are super creative and make you sit slack-jawed in awe the first time you listen to a song. Also they always go all out with makeup and costumes in their music videos. That gives them the edge for me.
Very much prefer Voiceplay. In my opinion they have more depth and personality.
They both do a good job on their song choices. However, in my opinion, if you are going to ask who is better then have them sing the same song. Singing different songs and then asking who did better doesn’t make sense.
VoicePlay every time
I love both groups but my favorite is voiceplay they are more energetic and creative
Nice 👍🏻
