First Time Milling Black Oak on Woodmizer LT15

I mail up a California black oak log on my Woodmizer LT 15 sawmill. California black oak grows in both Oregon and California. I have cut a lot of it into firewood, it makes great firewood. This is the first time I have ever put one on the sawmill and made lumber out of it. California black oak is part of the red Oak family. This was a very tall tree that came down in a snowstorm last winter. The top half of it was too small and crooked, I cut it into firewood. The chainsaw I am using is a Stihl MS 462.

We sent you a box 🎁 of black flies but they came back marked, "return to sender" and hungry. The least you could have done was stick your hand in the box and feed them before sending them back.🤨 Nice oak!

That oak 6x6 you had there reminds me of a fire place restoration I did once many in fact way to many years ago. and that would have been perfect. what we used to do was leave them in a slightly sunny spot to let them warp and destress into their final shape, then use them as fire place mantles . we made quite a few and some way bigger and holy smokes they sold for good money thats for sure. I will check out the socks as I only ever wear wool socks.
The rest of the tree would probably make good mantles since those logs are bigger. Tempting to do if only they weren’t so heavy to move around.

Looks very similar to the red oak I mill here in Maine. That black oak appears to be a touch darker than the red oak. May be the camera. Good stuff for trailer decking and top boards on trailers and dump truck rails.
I think you are right, the black oak is a little darker than red oak.
The grain looks a little like walnut but I see the resemblance to red oak. Neat video

I'm a bit south of you and we have an oak called tannin oak, makes great firewood.
I have a lot of tanoak over on my coast property. I have cut a lot of it into firewood. You are right it makes good firewood.

Yeah I think it looks like redoak, maybe just a little darker. But I haven’t been around enough to know for sure.
Some nice workbench, flooring lumber right there! I’d probably paint the ends asap but no idea if it’s needed as I don’t know a thing about milling hardwood. How’s your madrone drying? 👍🏼
I did put some anchorseal on the ends. The madrone is warping and twisting a little bit but not as bad as I thought it might. They might actually be usable.
Here in Wisconsin, black oak is only good for firewood.
Not a fan of the oaks but if I had to choose one, southern live oak. Not the greatest to mill(pitch) but after, very hard. Just ask old Ironsides. USS Constitution.
That is some pretty wood - IF it will stay straight. I'm thinking some 4x4 table legs would be real nice out of that stuff.
That lizard will make quick work of the wasp problem if he spots them. Those guys really do like wasps for dinner.

I seem to recall that you dislike doing the flitches... do you have a market for the live edge boards? Is that even a thing? Or, is it just for thick slabs?
I have sold a few live edge pieces here and there. I am guessing these oak live edge might be a little easier to sell than the usual Douglas fir I cut. I just haven’t noticed a big enough market to put much of a dent in the amount fir flitches I produce. It is something to consider with the rest of these oak logs. it might be a good idea.
After that water test, the wood has much more of a red tint to it and not at all black. Are you sure it is a black oak and not a red oak?
Black oak is the only red oak species we have in this area. It was a wild forest tree not likely to have been planted by anyone. it has all the other characteristics of our black oak.
Nice grain pattern. Would consider it as stock material for my boomstick

My mentor always said blade parallel to heart on both ends. Otherwise, cross grained?
I did center the heart. The problem with these crooked logs is the heart wanders through the log and some parts will be cross grained either way.
@@WilsonForestLands So true but what else can you do? Remember one log that i tried envisioning a chant that went through the crooked piece of crap but though i got a few more boards they were weird and not worth the trouble .
I heard you mention 7 degree blade and was curious if that is your go to blade? I also have a lt15 and have been using 9 or 10 degree blades. I mostly saw poplar, cherry, walnut and oak.
I have both 7 and 10°. Woodmixer recommended the 10 for the mostly softwood I cut. I got some 7° to see if they would last longer on the hard dry bug killed Douglas fir. I really haven’t noticed a difference between the blades on this mill.

Nice looking lumber to me good color and nice figure through out. Don't even want to think about what lumber sellers here in western Washington would charge for similar.
Those kind of wasps don’t bother me, it’s the yellowjackets that have the bad attitudes. I’ve had to get these kind really mad to get them to sting, but they do hurt when they do.
Looks alot like the live oak we have here in CA, whats the difference? Live oak is pretty damn dense, can be a pain to split.
Nevermind, after watching further i see the leaves are completely different from live oak, dont think ive seen a black oak here.
What would make more money slabs or boards?
I imagine slabs sell for more if you could get them to dry without warping and cupping too bad. I don’t like dealing with slabs because they are so heavy. I had sold some blue pine and other slabs in the past. I found I could get more money for them but not as many people buying them.
You should honestly unhook your tape before making a cut. Getting that in the chain won’t be fun at all lol
