My understanding is you require a heat press regardless of which process you decide to go ahead with because the heat press is needed to also press the plastosol transfer into the garment as well as cure it. For home business I would recommend a vinyl plotter among the popular home vinyl plotters are the Silhouette Cameo series and the cricut series perfect for HTV and I agree screen printing is messy I use to do it years ago. Just to make it clear to the nubies heat transfer plostisol are pre printed screen prints layered on paper simply put, it's outsourcing screen printing so you don't have to do all the hard work yourself and it is hard work I had to build my own screens coat them with photo emulsion dry and burn wash and patch print and clean then store away on top of that I had to heat press to cure the print and in some case wash test.

When you screen print you can cure the shirt other ways, heat pressing is one of them, you can also use a conveyor dryer, or flash dryer

yourbandsucks2002 - plastisol is ink that is partially cured to a transfer sheet that you will get then you press as orders come on. Plastisol is the same ink we use (industry wide) to print directly on to shirts.
Vinyl is a plastic that has a heat sensitive glue on the back. But that stuff you have to weed and it has a different feel then plastisol.
