Gotta love how when she's about to gigantamax her Garbodor she briefly hugs the pokeball, even when absolutely livid with you she still pays respect to her first Pokemon that she's had since a child. Man that's gotta be one of the best details in this fight.
I’ve seen a lot of people assuming that Olena’s linenup of beautiful, ladylike Pokémon with a Garbodor at the end is meant to represent that she’s beautiful and ladylike on the outside with a toxic inside-and while that’s fair, I took it a different way. It’s said that she grew up poor and that Trubbish was her first Pokémon. I see it as how, despite where she is now, she hasn’t forgotten her roots and still is close with her first companion.

Oleana isn't actually evil, she's just blinded by extreme loyalty. The chairman helped get her out of poverty and the fact that she keeps her first pokemon (Garbodor), despite having several more beautiful ones,says a lot. She wouldn't give Garbodor up even if her life depended on it.
I like how her battle theme has sinister yet energetic "have fun, buddy" beats. It highlights that she's not evil, just fiercely loyal. This is also shown in her battle. Even after being given a life of luxury and beautiful Pokémon, she still has her partner Garbodor. Many people would let the luxury get to their head, but not Oleana. She wouldn't give her first Pokémon away for all the jewels in the world.
Thats like never giving up your Linnone that started out as a Zigzagoon, always being there in your team as you go through your journey in Hoenn. It's a nice touch seeing as he now has Galar forms. Be the best you can be, but always remember your routes and what made you start in the first place.
Kinda reminds me of how in Sun I catched my first shiny ever being a Rockruff, even though Midday Lycanroc isn't the best Pokémon you can get in Alola, I kept him there for being so special
That does not surprise me honestly Although altogether I think the creator did a better job with Oleana as Lusamine felt somewhat forced or simply unrealistic regarding her motives. Speaking of how she would literally tear the world down and forsake her children for the sake of a poisonous jellyfish that in the end has no meaning whatsoever to anyone
I love Oleana's facial expressions. Pokemon Sword and Shield have some of the best human character designs in the series, especially because things like faces are illustrated in much more diverse ways than previous generations. In addition to the more typical designs like Leon and Sonia, you have characters like Kabu, Opal, and Oleana showing very different styles.
I agree! SWSH has amazing character design and expression out of the entire series. Its sort of the only thing the game has going for it lol. Makes sense since they got some great talent to take care of that area. Just needed more time. Oops, this comment turned into dragging the game
@@rune2O2O I mean swsh did a lot of things good, there were some amazing characters like Leon and hop(even tho he could've been better) The gym leaders were probably the best in the series and absolutely oozed with great personality(except raihan who I hate coz he's boring) The concept of the story is actually pretty cool(even tho the execution is worse than a pile of Garbodor) And the wild area is pretty damn cool I'd say overall a pretty good game despite its horrible flaws in between
She actually has a very sad backstory. She was poor and her family was starving, Chairman Rose saved her and since then she admires him like a hero. Also her only friend at first was trubbish, so that explain why she has so many beauty pokemon and a garbodor
@@ace-trainer-aj Actually, this is a long story and happened almost 5 years ago. Luckily I wrote down everything and found it. So, I was playing a White nuzlocke, I had a Tirtouga that I was planning on using against Skyla, but it died, and my only option to replace it was a Trubbish. I trained it and it became a Garbodor, but it got Weak Armor as the ability. But, despite that, Garbodor ended up being the MVP against Skyla - Swoobat was defeated by Toxic while Unfezant and Swanna fell to Sludge Bomb. I felt like hugging it, even if Garbodor was made of trash.

Right? The cutscene just ends and we go to dinner as if we didn't just witness Oleana having a complete mental breakdown and making us run around the city, or the fact that we just raided a private high-security facility just because Hop's brother was late to dinner...like alright
I like how her Garbodor has dual meaning in her team of otherwise conventionally 'pretty' Pokemon. It can represent her inner toxicity beneath the outer shell of 'stoic beauty', but it also shows her earnesty and loyalty because it's the first Pokemon she ever had - she refuses to give it up, even if it sticks out like a sore thumb.
Yeah I guess but the actual reason she has garbodor is in episode 5, assistant, of twilight wings. I don't blame you if you haven't watched it, but essentially Oleana was a poor programmer that was quite knowledgeable, then rose discovered her and trubbish in the lab she'd been working in. Then rose hired her, and she eventually became assistant due to the abundance of knowledge she had.

This is the only "villain" I liked in this game. She's not really evil. Just loyal to the point of blindness. It also helps that this is my favorite battle theme from this game. Edit: gotta change Oleana's music to 2nd favorite. Hop's final battle theme is really good when it isn't drowned out by the crowd.

Well, SWSH doesnt really have a "Villain". Rose was good intentions gone horribly wrong because of his own worries. The manga might orchestrate it much better, as it did for TeamFlare in XY because yea, trying to prepare for events 1000 YEARS AWAY is one hell of a stretch.

I can be the only one that loves her mood swings, the pre-battle dialogue made gasp a little it was like jumpscare and later i was a little scared when she loses because i was sure she would freak out even worse but she just calm down with a rest face saying "Oleanna you're a hopeless girl" and it was so funny. Also all that backstory about Garbodor (top tier Mon) that you already know. 9/10 character.

I like how Rose and Leon are having a nice and calm conversation, while 2 gigant Pokémon battle behind them. Also... Garbodor used a move that makes giant rocks emerge from the ground... IN THE TOP OF THE TOWER!
Already love her and her backstory her team is very symbolic with most of her Pokemon representing beauty and attractiveness like her but her Garbodor which was her very first Pokemon she had since as a Trubbish when she was poor symbolize with her being discarded, looked down upon and hated until she met Rose that took her in like a daughter which is understandable for her bits of bursts she has. So cute obviously she would never abandon her once a Trubbish now a Garbodor despite her luxury she gotten love when Pokemon hits you deep in the feel ;)!
Looking back Oleana is honestly one of my favorite characters in SwSh alongside Piers and the rival trio, All the pressure of being the right hand woman to the chairman of galar's biggest corporations PLUS being a personal friend of chairman rose back when times were rough for them (Both were coal miners, ouch.) makes her insanely loyal, hence why we all know how pissed off she got with the protagonist and hop managing to reach the top of rose tower. and that Garbodor...it's implied that she's had it as a trubbish when she was younger and was living in poverty and look, she STILL values the pokemon dearly despite having all those elegant pokemon on her team as well, she hugs the damn pokeball with the garbodor before dynamaxing it.

Mega evolution could have been good if it was used only to make weak pokemon good. But a ton of megas just made good pokemon better. Dynamax can be used by any pokemon but neither of them solve the underlying problem... that said for story mode though Dynamax > megas.
I just realized her name is a mixture of olive (which represents beauty and calmness) and oleander (a poisonous flower). throughout the game, she is pretty calm and collected but gets enraged and psychotic when you try to stop rose. this also explains why she was given Pokémon known for their "beauty" but also two poison types.

The whole song is a bop- but I do appreciate the very beginning piano dissonant chords as the song ramps up with Oleana supposedly “screaming” in her animation. Chords like that are usually used to signify something crazy or psychotic is happening- think Psycho shower scene or even the beginning of Sephiroth’s theme with the strings.

Honestly given how motherly Bayonetta is in her series, I can't see her voicing an insane crazy faced woman like Olena. Now Jeanne on the other hand, her VA Grey DeLise would be perfect. She also did Azula in Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Before we found out the story, part of me had hoped that Chairman Rose was just going turn out to be a clueless stooge and Oleana was actually going to be the main villain working right underneath everyone's nose. Would have been a fun twist. Game Freak has a tendency to really make the villain bosses obvious, if only because there's no other reason for them to be given the level of pre-release attention they get. I'd like to see them really hit us from outside left field with a boss reveal. Like a corrupt champion or gym leader, or hell, why not a particularly intelligent legendary Pokémon? Like a lot of other stuff in this series, the formula they have going now is good, but damn if there isn't some wasted potential.

Remembering Oleana's extremely expressive animations in this fight still give me hope the state of animation quality in Pokemon games can get better, even now.

By the way, love Oleana's stance during the battle. It's pretty badass seeing her jacket (coat?) blowing in the wind on top of Rose Tower, at night, near a powerspot and with the calmest expression during the battle. Like she's super experienced. Her team aren't filled with bad choices either. I bet at one point she was a pretty serious trainer, probably even took on the Gym Challenge and had got pretty far too. You know, in between her upbringing and her time being Rose's secretary. Considering her team is near Rose's level and Rose himself was, at one point, #2 in Galar, it's no wonder she's so close to him. Well that, and Rose got Oleana out of a life of struggle. Great battle. So much can be understood or at least deduced just from the battles alone in Galar.
Fun fact: All of her pokemon are based on polls in Japan regarding pokemon that are ranked to be very beautiful, except Garbordor. It's explained in the manga and anime that she was a orphan living in poverty, and Garbordor was her only companion until she was lifted out of poverty by Rose. That's why she refuses to part ways with it.
As soon as I heard the music that plays whenever you encounter her or Rose in the game, I knew it was going to be a battle theme, and I knew it was going to be a banger. Sometimes I truly and blessed with the gift of foresight
I'm so proud of Garbodor. Oleana uses particularly beautiful Pokemon, which makes me think that maybe she believes that Trubbish and Garbodor are somehow beautiful. After all, one person's trash is another person's treasure.
Never had the games and somehow hadn't heard this theme until a couple days ago and sweet Arceus have I been MISSING OUT this is easily one of my favorite tracks in the whole franchise
Oleana's battle is my favorite battle in the entire game. The happy-go-lucky build up to her battle completely is a big surprise when you end up facing a berserk Oleana. (+Her theme is my favorite in the game)
Oleana reminds me of Everything I lost in my life and shows me how I became so obsessed with winning that I forgot how to actually enjoy myself... I used to feel exactly like Oleana... but seeing her hug her Pokémon before sending it into battle made me realize- there was so much I was missing... I don't know why people keep comparing Oleana to Lusamine, IMO , Shees more like a rich sophisticated classy female Galarian Guzma, Guzma and Oleanna are Kinda similar imo, as both have tragic and disturbing backstory either as abusive parents, homerunning, and poverty, before being founded hired and given more proper lives by their crazy and selfish superiors who all are wealthy company presidents who all are also similar, Rose and Lusamine , respectively, to the point devote blind and complete life loyalty and admiration toward them , I always Pretend Alola Garbage to not exist, but the parallelism are just way similar because Rose IS Lusamine While Oleanna IS Guzma
ironically enough, when it is obvious enough Lusamine is based on Ragyo Kiryuin, Oleana has more elements of Rei Hououmaru, Ragyo' s secretary than Guzma is.
@@femmemachete never 100% confirmed but he was supposedly beaten up by his father (in the japanese version it says something like that, while in English the dad says he'd challenge it to a pokemon battle), also he failed the trials, making him a misfit. The whole reason of the team skull was to give a place to the kids who weren't quite into or good enough for the trials. Lusamine was the first adult to "take him seriously" kind off, and thats why he worked for her.
tbh rose is just a rushed lusamine, atleast lusamine has some type of plot relevance and her relationship with lillie and gladeon is atleast interesting even tho it’s predictable
You know this game would be really good if the story just had more of everything. More challengers (as well as characters in general), More story moments, more at stake, and just more story to begin with. Half of the game nothing happens. This game felt like it was apart of the pokemon anime but watered down, it just needs more of everything.
I liked the game a lot at first, but when i finished the postgame story i was really dissapointed that there is almost nothing to do after that. Game Freak should stop releasing a pokémon game every year and take 5 or 6 years to make the next one.
I called Rose out to be untrustworthy the moment I read "Chairman". Ikutsuki hardened my stance when it comes to chairmans in RPG's, I was hoping Oleana would be somewhat surprising but she ended up being nothing more than an obedient lapdog for Rose... disappointing is how I would describe Rose and Oleana as villains. Team Yell was handled in a far better manner.
While I was expecting her to be a villain, I wasn’t expecting her to be subservient to Rose. Honestly I was kinda expecting her to be more of a manipulator, or have some sort of ulterior motive.
I've never experienced an eargasm quite like this one. I love Piers' theme and the Gym Leader theme and all that, but this one itches a scratch I didn't even know was there. *𝘈𝘩.*
Oleana’s battle had far more weight and meaning behind it, someone she genuinely cares for and makes sure to make his goal true, by any means necissary, and Rose is just there for some stupid progress. Her fight for what she believed was greater than his imo. Even using her childhood friend as her greatest ace.
Easily one of my favourite tracks in the game, if not the series. I’ve never heard a piece of video game music more perfectly express the kind of frantic anger this battle has; oleana is at her wit’s end with the player, she’ll do anything for rose and is frankly sick of your meddling. The breakneck pace of the drumbeat and the fact that at some points in the song it just sounds like someone just going to absolute town on an old grand piano is brilliant. She may be a proud businesswoman but she’s not above punting a child. Absolute masterclass.
Shes genuinely terrifying lol. Also this theme went so much harder than expected. Sworld and Shield has some of the greatest music in the mainline games in my opinion, SOME.
Not gonna lie, i was PISSED that she wasn't re-matchable at the championship cups in postgame, her team was likely my favorite out of all the sword and shield major characters (second place goes to my boy Piers) and the only one that actually gave me trouble.
At least it's much easier to do by the power of an additional user profile! I honestly wish this happened on the 3DS games without having to get another version and restart on that (And yes, I've done it many times except for OR/AS)

Also we illegally raided a corporate building and beat up the pokemon of a bunch of employees just trying to do their job just because the guy who promised to have Dinner with us was late.
The fact that she has so many beautiful Pokemon and a Garbodor is so amazing. She was once poor, and the only partner she had was a Trubbish, but now she has grown to be at the position she is, developing herself, and capturing Pokemon to represent herself, while still keeping her first partner Pokemon with her.

I love Oleana's facial expressions. Pokemon Sword and Shield have some of the best human character designs in the series, especially because things like faces are illustrated in much more diverse ways than previous generations.
In addition to the more typical designs like Leon and Sonia, you have characters like Kabu, Opal, and Oleana showing very different styles.

So, I was playing a White nuzlocke, I had a Tirtouga that I was planning on using against Skyla, but it died, and my only option to replace it was a Trubbish. I trained it and it became a Garbodor, but it got Weak Armor as the ability. But, despite that, Garbodor ended up being the MVP against Skyla - Swoobat was defeated by Toxic while Unfezant and Swanna fell to Sludge Bomb. I felt like hugging it, even if Garbodor was made of trash.

I like how her Garbodor has dual meaning in her team of otherwise conventionally 'pretty' Pokemon.
It can represent her inner toxicity beneath the outer shell of 'stoic beauty', but it also shows her earnesty and loyalty because it's the first Pokemon she ever had - she refuses to give it up, even if it sticks out like a sore thumb.
Yeah I guess but the actual reason she has garbodor is in episode 5, assistant, of twilight wings. I don't blame you if you haven't watched it, but essentially Oleana was a poor programmer that was quite knowledgeable, then rose discovered her and trubbish in the lab she'd been working in. Then rose hired her, and she eventually became assistant due to the abundance of knowledge she had.

This is the only "villain" I liked in this game. She's not really evil. Just loyal to the point of blindness. It also helps that this is my favorite battle theme from this game.
Edit: gotta change Oleana's music to 2nd favorite. Hop's final battle theme is really good when it isn't drowned out by the crowd.

Well, SWSH doesnt really have a "Villain". Rose was good intentions gone horribly wrong because of his own worries. The manga might orchestrate it much better, as it did for TeamFlare in XY because yea, trying to prepare for events 1000 YEARS AWAY is one hell of a stretch.

Already love her and her backstory her team is very symbolic with most of her Pokemon representing beauty and attractiveness like her but her Garbodor which was her very first Pokemon she had since as a Trubbish when she was poor symbolize with her being discarded, looked down upon and hated until she met Rose that took her in like a daughter which is understandable for her bits of bursts she has. So cute obviously she would never abandon her once a Trubbish now a Garbodor despite her luxury she gotten love when Pokemon hits you deep in the feel ;)!

Looking back Oleana is honestly one of my favorite characters in SwSh alongside Piers and the rival trio, All the pressure of being the right hand woman to the chairman of galar's biggest corporations PLUS being a personal friend of chairman rose back when times were rough for them (Both were coal miners, ouch.) makes her insanely loyal, hence why we all know how pissed off she got with the protagonist and hop managing to reach the top of rose tower. and that Garbodor...it's implied that she's had it as a trubbish when she was younger and was living in poverty and look, she STILL values the pokemon dearly despite having all those elegant pokemon on her team as well, she hugs the damn pokeball with the garbodor before dynamaxing it.

The whole song is a bop- but I do appreciate the very beginning piano dissonant chords as the song ramps up with Oleana supposedly “screaming” in her animation. Before we found out the story, part of me had hoped that Chairman Rose was just going turn out to be a clueless stooge and Oleana was actually going to be the main villain working right underneath everyone's nose. Would have been a fun twist.
Game Freak has a tendency to really make the villain bosses obvious, if only because there's no other reason for them to be given the level of pre-release attention they get. I'd like to see them really hit us from outside left field with a boss reveal. Like a corrupt champion or gym leader, or hell, why not a particularly intelligent legendary Pokémon?
Like a lot of other stuff in this series, the formula they have going now is good, but damn if there isn't some wasted potential.

Remembering Oleana's extremely expressive animations in this fight still give me hope the state of animation quality in Pokemon games can get better, even now.
Fun fact: Rose and Oleana （ローズとオリーヴ）were designed by mangaka artist Haruko Ichikawa（春子市川）, author and illustrator of the manga and anime, Land of the Lustrous.
By the way, love Oleana's stance during the battle. It's pretty badass seeing her jacket (coat?) blowing in the wind on top of Rose Tower, at night, near a powerspot and with the calmest expression during the battle.
Like she's super experienced. Her team aren't filled with bad choices either.
I bet at one point she was a pretty serious trainer, probably even took on the Gym Challenge and had got pretty far too. You know, in between her upbringing and her time being Rose's secretary.
Considering her team is near Rose's level and Rose himself was, at one point, #2 in Galar, it's no wonder she's so close to him. Well that, and Rose got Oleana out of a life of struggle.
Great battle. So much can be understood or at least deduced just from the battles alone in Galar.
Fun fact: All of her pokemon are based on polls in Japan regarding pokemon that are ranked to be very beautiful, except Garbordor. It's explained in the manga and anime that she was a orphan living in poverty, and Garbordor was her only companion until she was lifted out of poverty by Rose. That's why she refuses to part ways with it.
I like the theme of her team: a succession of beautiful pokemon on the outside till you reach her trashy, toxic core!
It's also a reference to her past life in poverty, and it further shows her loyalty of keeping Garbodor even after all the luxury.
Maybe it’s a reflection of how well written she is

This is how I read it too.
As soon as I heard the music that plays whenever you encounter her or Rose in the game, I knew it was going to be a battle theme, and I knew it was going to be a banger. Sometimes I truly and blessed with the gift of foresight

Maybe a unpopular opinion, but this might be the BEST battle soundtrack in Sword n Shield.
I'm so proud of Garbodor. Oleana uses particularly beautiful Pokemon, which makes me think that maybe she believes that Trubbish and Garbodor are somehow beautiful. After all, one person's trash is another person's treasure.
She uses the garbodor because trubbish was her first pokemon and friend

I really appreciate how many touches of other themes in the games are sprinkled into Oleana's awesome theme.
Not sure if people noticed but, Chairman Rose's first encounter theme is integrated into her theme, which I think was pretty neat :)
Never had the games and somehow hadn't heard this theme until a couple days ago and sweet Arceus have I been MISSING OUT this is easily one of my favorite tracks in the whole franchise
Oleana's battle is my favorite battle in the entire game. The happy-go-lucky build up to her battle completely is a big surprise when you end up facing a berserk Oleana. (+Her theme is my favorite in the game)
Oleana reminds me of Everything I lost in my life and shows me how I became so obsessed with winning that I forgot how to actually enjoy myself... I used to feel exactly like Oleana... but seeing her hug her Pokémon before sending it into battle made me realize- there was so much I was missing... I love my family and I want them to be proud of me someday- I’ll never give up on my dreams... I’ll never let anyone bring me down. But I never want to let myself bring my family down. I SWEAR ON EVERYTHING THAT I WILL BECOME THE GREATEST DRIVER IN WORLD!!!!

I don't know why people keep comparing Oleana to Lusamine,
IMO , Shees more like a rich sophisticated classy female Galarian Guzma, Guzma and Oleanna are Kinda similar imo, as both have tragic and disturbing backstory either as abusive parents, homerunning, and poverty, before being founded hired and given more proper lives by their crazy and selfish superiors who all are wealthy company presidents who all are also similar, Rose and Lusamine , respectively, to the point devote blind and complete life loyalty and admiration toward them , I always Pretend Alola Garbage to not exist, but the parallelism are just way similar because Rose IS Lusamine
While Oleanna IS Guzma
ironically enough, when it is obvious enough Lusamine is based on Ragyo Kiryuin, Oleana has more elements of Rei Hououmaru, Ragyo' s secretary than Guzma is.
What was Guzma's backstory again?
@@femmemachete never 100% confirmed but he was supposedly beaten up by his father (in the japanese version it says something like that, while in English the dad says he'd challenge it to a pokemon battle), also he failed the trials, making him a misfit. The whole reason of the team skull was to give a place to the kids who weren't quite into or good enough for the trials. Lusamine was the first adult to "take him seriously" kind off, and thats why he worked for her.
Except Guzma’s battle is hell while oleana’s battle is just -_-
tbh rose is just a rushed lusamine, atleast lusamine has some type of plot relevance and her relationship with lillie and gladeon is atleast interesting even tho it’s predictable
looking back, this is the most criminally underrated theme in SwSh and among the most underrated ever.
You know this game would be really good if the story just had more of everything. More challengers (as well as characters in general), More story moments, more at stake, and just more story to begin with. Half of the game nothing happens.
This game felt like it was apart of the pokemon anime but watered down, it just needs more of everything.
I liked the game a lot at first, but when i finished the postgame story i was really dissapointed that there is almost nothing to do after that. Game Freak should stop releasing a pokémon game every year and take 5 or 6 years to make the next one.

I called Rose out to be untrustworthy the moment I read "Chairman". Ikutsuki hardened my stance when it comes to chairmans in RPG's, I was hoping Oleana would be somewhat surprising but she ended up being nothing more than an obedient lapdog for Rose... disappointing is how I would describe Rose and Oleana as villains. Team Yell was handled in a far better manner.

While I was expecting her to be a villain, I wasn’t expecting her to be subservient to Rose. Honestly I was kinda expecting her to be more of a manipulator, or have some sort of ulterior motive.

I've never experienced an eargasm quite like this one. I love Piers' theme and the Gym Leader theme and all that, but this one itches a scratch I didn't even know was there.

Oleana’s battle had far more weight and meaning behind it, someone she genuinely cares for and makes sure to make his goal true, by any means necissary, and Rose is just there for some stupid progress. Her fight for what she believed was greater than his imo. Even using her childhood friend as her greatest ace.
Easily one of my favourite tracks in the game, if not the series. I’ve never heard a piece of video game music more perfectly express the kind of frantic anger this battle has; oleana is at her wit’s end with the player, she’ll do anything for rose and is frankly sick of your meddling. The breakneck pace of the drumbeat and the fact that at some points in the song it just sounds like someone just going to absolute town on an old grand piano is brilliant. She may be a proud businesswoman but she’s not above punting a child. Absolute masterclass.

Shes genuinely terrifying lol. Also this theme went so much harder than expected. Sworld and Shield has some of the greatest music in the mainline games in my opinion, SOME.

Not gonna lie, i was PISSED that she wasn't re-matchable at the championship cups in postgame, her team was likely my favorite out of all the sword and shield major characters (second place goes to my boy Piers) and the only one that actually gave me trouble.
I did it 3 times in a row, each game I used the same Pokémon too

The fact that she has so many beautiful Pokemon and a Garbodor is so amazing. She was once poor, and the only partner she had was a Trubbish, but now she has grown to be at the position she is, developing herself, and capturing Pokemon to represent herself, while still keeping her first partner Pokemon with her.
