Transsexual is still considered valid today, but only for people who had genital surgery; transgender may or may not require genital surgery. All transsexuals are transgender, but not all transgender people are transsexual. If that's confusing, that's why the word transgender is generally used today.

You don't need to go broadcasting it to everyone as soon as you meet, but you should be up front. If people are okay with your trans status then you can move into the other dating stuff. But if they aren't attracted to your anatomy, or of you've done the sex change they have issues with your trans status, then you can't really hold that against them. You need to establish a baseline and then go from there. If you're not on the same page to start and then you're trying to start having an intimate relationship and only then do you inform your partner, it's going to end rough.
