How Classical Muslim Scholars Treated the Mind, Body, and Soul | Holistic Healing with Dr. Rania

  • In the previous episode of this series, we discussed the way Muslim scholars examined mental health illnesses. In this video, Dr. Raniaa Awaad delves into the treatment options these scholars employed. This helps us understand that mental health conditions are multifactorial and we must analyze and examine all contributing factors.
This series is in collaboration with Stanford Muslim Mental Health Lab.

I used to think that my mental illness is due to my lack of faith. I condemn myself for being far from Allah which leads to worse condition. But.. this video changes my life. I realize that there are many factors lead to mental illness such as genetics, environment, and spiritual. I live within environment that stress me out everytime (e.g. parent fight). Of course, I do not blame anything or anyone regarding my illness. I just.. agree that I need to seek help outside spiritual. I need to be closer to Allah as well as seek help to human being. Thank you for this insight.

My father in law is a non-Muslim. (Sikh), he is quite religious but he doesn't feel like doing acts of worship which is done in Sikhism. He is diagnosed & is suffering from depression. He says he has a lot of negative thoughts going on in his mind. He says he has a lot of stress. 14yrs ago, he was first diagnosed with depression. He considers his case is different so he cannot be cured . Can anybody suggest how to cure a non muslim through Islam?

I suggest going to the professional is the best way, go to therapy with psychologist, when dealing with illnesses or any problems seek help through the right profession. Every illness have cure we must trust ourselves and others that we can and want to get through it. If we giving up on ourselves it will be hard.

As salaam alaykum. Dr Rania mentions Ibn Sina and Al Kindi. Both these philosophers practiced Magic. They did contribute to medicine but were also known to have practiced magic which they learned from Greek philosophy. Symbols and phrases are very much part of Magic. Magic is Magic!
