Amazing closing of a chapter! Just binge watched 24 episodes in one night. Time well spent. Thanks for bringing us aboard and making us feel part of the adventure :)
As an owner of a slightly elderly 36 footer here in Britain I really admire all the work you've done to get your boat seaworthy. You have been both so energetic and innovative that I have really been struck by you both. I am particularly impressed by the fact that you are both young but you have tackled some pretty significant projects especially rebuilding the floors I am always worried that young people these days don't pick up tools, repair things, renovate, modify , be constructive, get their hands dirty. Well done! You deserve to succeed with your dreams Just take care of yourselves and UMA Happy sailing Alex
+Alexandre Bewsey Thanks Alex, this really means a lot. We enjoy pushing beyond our comfort zone, and are determined enough to always strive for solutions :) Cheers!
OMG your blessing at the end made me cry! Love seeing Keka's talents displayed. Clothing locker suggestion: I use several dozen Eagle Creek and eggs packing cubes on my Islander 30. They squash together nicely so there's no wasted airspace, as you find inside a rigid box.
I watched a more recent video and then started at the beginning. I’ve been recreationally boating for 24 years. I continue to be amazed at the well thought out solutions, implementation, determination, and hard work displayed in each successive video.
Have used that style of chain coupler on many vacuum pumps and clutch cable hoists. They are reliable and relatively quiet, much better choice. might want to add a catch pan/pad for oil. running dry is their big weakness. I love how you two show no fear in tackling projects. Nice work on the cabinets.
Hahaha, there are a few of us out there. Same name and same interests....you must be really cool :-) Sailing Uma is a great escape and I don't miss an episode. Would love to be at a point in my life to be able to do this. Alas, living vicariously will have to do.
Goodness. I'm almost a bit verklempt that you're finally underway after all your hard work. Well done. Looking forward to watching you enjoying the fruits of your labours.
***** Toch een hele vreemde manier van uitdrukken en het is "verklemt" zonder "p" ! Yiddish isn't a language and it's linguistically wrong in both Dutch and German ! loose the "P" !
Wielding that jigsaw like a pro. Pretty awesome moves there. And then there she floats, all done and pretty looking, ready for a million adventures. I want to see them all. Keep on posting.
Great episode and congrats on your tenacity on making the Elecro-Beke work, as it turned out for the next 4+ plus years, now lets get this adventure started!!
Having just engineered my own anchor system, I applaud your choice of a Rocna anchor. I had to carefully choose the rode and the shackle to begin to match the holding power of the anchor! You couldn't have done better. I pray He who walks on water may bare you safely over the water!
Great video and conversion of your drawer to a better storage shelving and great job on the engine. One word of suggestion. Please, please, please add some links of chain in between your Rocna and your swivel. The anchor will set in deep and if you have a tidal swing or wind shift you'll pivot on that swivel and blow the pin apart. Just google swivel failures. Looking forward to more videos and seeing you guys cruising.
What a difference in rotational noise! It takes energy to create noise so now you've increased your run time.....good show Dan! I would have used an elastomer based coupling but it looks like you've aligned those shafts well and found a workable solution. I'm not used to seeing girls using routers and rotary hand saws, so I was impressed when Kika was using them like a pro. And I now see she is also an excellent free-hand graphical artist! The inventive and neat personalities of this Uma couple are fun to watch....
Kika - Great job on the redesign of two of your storage areas ! Dan - glad to see you cleaned and put some paint in your engine room ! Good Job both of you !
Sometimes I watch these and man it is with amazement.. and wonder at what point would it have been easier to build a new boat ha eventually you will be producing electric motors for the world
Congratulations UMA! But I second the comments below regarding your ground tackle. ----- Looking forward to your many adventures in the days and years to come--- Fair winds and following seas!
I applaud you both on the work you have done to that boat. Your ingenuity, artistry, mechanical skills, and craftsmanship are amazing. Great work. Love the videos!
I am so happy that you can now start the real Journey. In germany we say "Mast und Schotbruch sowie immer eine Hand breit Wasser unterm Kiel" Good luck for the Future
I just found your channel yesterday and am here now. I showed up late, but don't worry I will catch up. You guys are the hardest workers I have ever seen. And your mechanical aptitude is amazing. I can't wait to watch the rest of your adventure. Fair winds! Bob
Dan & Erika, glad to see you finally underway and out of "Timmy World." I made my escape today but only two miles downriver the engine blew a head gasket. I am at the Ft. Pierce City Marina now awaiting repairs......good luck to you both and I'm looking forward to the next video. Ken
A huge congrats to have reached this point in the journey. I wish you both all the success and wonderful adventures you both are seeking. You deserve this for everything you have achieved so far to get there. May Uma always protect you and sail far and wide across the seas. Cheers Dave.
UMA - I have followed your progress from the first video till now, may I go ahead and say Congrats on your achievements, wonderfully done as I have enjoyed your series of videos - this has now given me the inspiration to find my own #1, to begin a journey of undiscovered waterways all over this wonderful globe. As you have said one step at a time - need to crawl before you can walk. Safe sailing and fair wind may be bestowed upon you along your journey to the unknown.
Catching up on your story and love how this video is the culmination of your electric motor! I've used small ones in electric RC cars and planes and I love how you're powering your sailboat with a slightly bigger version. Way cool!
Best edited video you have done yet. Really shows a sense of storytelling. Watching you two grow over these last couple years has been amazing. Now enjoy the fruits of your labors. Be open to new experiences and especially new people. Fair winds...
Great job on the engine to transmission MOD. Enjoying the steps and now on to Season 3! Loved seeing the name painted on the boat at the end. Fair Winds Uma.
Standing ovation from my lovely wife and I!! We are so excited for you. I don't think I've ever clapped after a TH-cam video before until now. How gripping to see Uma being born. My wife needed a tissue.
Hi again! I was watching the episodes about the motor instalation again! I have to say I so much admire your work and skils it is worth a lot of love so I send you mine!. I can tell you that I have now began my own project. I am refitting an Amel 52. Most of the boat is finished but I am an stubard old fart so I rip the motor out to do a tottal renovation on it. It is an Volvo D2.75 a real work horse. and it didn't realy needed the repare but what the heck, when I still was on the hard I decided to change all barings and bushing and also new spreaders. No I am not going electric because the engine is just fine and I am planing for longer trips next year, So perhaps we meet out on the ocean one day, The sailing community is rather small so it seams like people meet in different places all the time. I will buy you a bear if we meet out there! Love and light from the old fart in Sweden :D
This has already been a fascinating voyage despite it being on land. I love the way you challenge convention and rethink how best to meet your needs and those of the planet. God Bless.
You guys are sort of living my dream. I congratulate you on that. I have a few little suggestions that you may want to consider. First, hand grinding may not have been the best way to taper your motor shaft. If you had let your local machine shop cut an adapter on a lathe, then concentricity would probably have been better. I do need to compliment you on the quality of your hand craftsmanship though. It is much better than most people are capable of. Second, there is a type of multi-piece shaft coupling with a rubber spider in the middle that is commonly used in industrial applications. They are less alignment sensitive compared to most other options. One of them would probably run more quietly than your chain coupling & also make motor removal easier when you need to do maintenance. All brush motors will eventually need maintenance. The brushes themselves are a wear item, like tires on a car. Third, the anchor swivel should not be connected directly to the anchor shank. You should have a shackle & at least 1 or two chain links between them. Otherwise, if the anchor is firmly set & a tide change causes a side load on the anchor, the yoke of the swivel can be pried apart. The swivels are rated for straight pull only, not side loads. The bowl side of the shackle should be in the shank of the anchor, so that it can swing from side to side. That is the purpose for the bowl of the anchor shackle being shaped the way that it is. May you find fair winds
Congratulations from someone still stuck in metro Atlanta! You've both done an incredible job, it's been a joy to watch things come together and I'm very happy for the two of you.
Kinda gob-smaked that my favourite non-sailing sailing channel will now be... sailing. Congratulations on all your hard work - let the adventure begin/continue!!! And yes, beautiful ending. You are a great film-maker, Kikka. Bon vent!
Even better coupler! But make sure you keep an eye on that chain coupling to watch for unusual wear, powdered metal deformation of the links or teeth...
Congratulations guys! So much work done and done properly! You should be really proud and it will be a joy to follow your adventure as you finally get to throw of the mooringlines!
+Sailing the Foxy Lady Thanks. Yes we are really proud of our accomplishment. It's still sometimes surreal to wake up and realize that we are not tied to anything but our anchor. It's so freeing.
+Sailing Uma for us its the other way around. I hauled out the boat this morning and started scraping the hull. But i am enjoying myself! And it will be that much better sailing in a few weeks! 😊👍
I'm obsessesed. You guys were contractors and architects, which is why you're so good a boat repair, but how are you such good filmmakers and storytellers?

+Hugo Villero you have no idea how big of a smile it bring to our faces just reading your amazing comment. you are welcome and Thank you for good vibe!
Wow! Great episode and and I can't wait for what's next. Writing this on the day of our first journey too. Too be announced soon. Keep it up. Fair winds.
Random thought. If the chain becomes problematic down the road, another option would be a CV axle similar to what would you would find on a small front wheel drive car. It'll be quiet and you won't have to worry about perfectly aligning the motor and trans each time to pull the motor or worry about it vibrating/shaking lose on passage and cause an issue. If it breaks in a undeveloped country, I think your odds of finding an axle are easier than finding a chain....thinking out loud. You guys are doing great!
Great that Rocna is onboard! (or on the anchorage bottom) We bought one a few years ago and from Panama to Maine it grabs ever time. A serious upgrade for our old plow that we loved for 20 years. But, Rocna rocks!!! Hope to share an anchorage with you all sometime!
+svbluehighway Yea , we feel much better having our rocna keeping us safely anchored. Definitely, Let us know if ever we happen to be in the same area. We would love to be neighbors sometime :)
You guys are aliens!!!! I just finished binge watching your channel up to this point. I gotta go to bed cause I'm up in 4 hours to start a 14 hour day. Watching all the work you put in, is truly inspirational. I need to take some tomorrow and try to find out how two architects are so adept at putting this boat together. Great Job!!!!!
Geniuses. That motor is so much quieter - probably more efficient too.
BTW, I love the cupboards too.
Amazing closing of a chapter! Just binge watched 24 episodes in one night. Time well spent. Thanks for bringing us aboard and making us feel part of the adventure :)
When the motor started spinning almost silently at 8:45, I let out a loud "Whaaaat?"
Nice work!
+floppel Makes a difference doesnt it ?
It's amazing how much quieter that coat of paint made the motor.
I know nothing when it comes to sail boats but watching these videos/Steps and help me decide that I want to learn and start my journey.

Congrats on getting her ready, Uma that is... I can finally say, Happy Sailing, and Fair Winds!
I'm glad to see that the motor mounts finally got painted, they look much better red than rust

Taking a deep breath with you. So much time and effort now realized. Even I have gotten a little teary eyed. Fair winds Uma.
Awesome job with silencing the electric motor. Top notch.
I am totally in love with that electric engine. I will install one in my Contessa. I LOVE IT
Goodness. I'm almost a bit verklempt that you're finally underway after all your hard work. Well done. Looking forward to watching you enjoying the fruits of your labours.

You did it!!, looks like your ready for solar panels and a wind generator, and sea trials. you both have done a unbelievable job with that boat.
Well done guys. Congratulations to the newly named boat, fair winds and following seas!
Nice work on the motor and storage spaces.
Amazed by the sound improvement that the chain adjustment made. And great woodwork, Kika!
+Two aboard Tuuli :) thank youuuuuu
11:23 And now, it's over 300 step ! Congrats !!
The sound reduction is incredible and so clean looking. Great job!
AWESOME!!! Fair winds to you!
You two are perfect for each other.I do not know any other couple on youtube that could of done what you two did with that boat.Great job.

+Lazy Jacques That's funny. Sailing Uma can finally live up to her title haha.
It will be strange only seeing Uma's top half sticking out of the water, though!
I shoulda waited until I'd seen the end to comment. I too hope *all* the gods are on your side. A great ending. I'm looking forward to your future.
Yeah for adventures ahead!! Fairwinds to you, you sweet couple!!
I don't think I've ever been more excited for the next video!
So excited you guys are almost at the sailing part! I do love the prep videos as well, though.
Even better coupler! But make sure you keep an eye on that chain coupling to watch for unusual wear, powdered metal deformation of the links or teeth...
+MISTERComaToes for sure
Awesome. Great job. Very inspiring
So sad to see you set sail!! I just love these videos. I could watch you guys work on the boat all day. ; )
It looks like you eliminated the rubber mounts and it was still quiet. Amazing.
I watched this again. You guys are amazing!
Brought a smile to my face! Finally sailing! Fair winds and following seas!
You guys were contractors and architects, which is why you're so good a boat repair, but how are you such good filmmakers and storytellers?
haha thanks :) I think we both already had creative minds which helps, but architecture school definitely helped with presentation skills.
Dan you must have grown up on sailboats and working in machine shops. That motor set up is ingenious
This journey is going to be awesome to watch ... fantastic
I am almost disappointed that you are now able to sail. I have enjoyed watching your hard work. Hard work is fun if you make it fun and with your talents shown to us on youtube you have made this fun for so many. You have learned so many lessons this far and we are waiting for your lessons to teach more as your life expands. Enjoy the benefits of all your hard work.
+Uncle Muir Don't worry, with most of the repairs they've performed (which in the hubris of youth they have tried to do as unconventionally as possible) there will be many more lessons for them to learn along the way.
+Jeff Reid Interesting to watch people like you attack every move they make under the guise of "offering advice."
I never offered any advice...
Never attacked them either...I just said they will have a lot of lessons to learn. They are young... They will learn them along the way.
Got it. Attacking without the guise of anything helpful or productive.
"in the hubris of youth they have tried to do as unconventionally as possible"
I don't get it. You sneer your way around youtube for what purpose?
Great job!! Congrats from Spain!!
Quieter and I imagine a lot less power loss too. Great job and good luck!
Outstanding guys, thank you..fair winds.
Your creativity is just amazing. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.
Great video guys, just love your optimism.
great to see you off the dock. The best part of the adventure is before you!
Great to see it all come together. Love the red westerbeke color! Now just need a good charging system....
+Bob Fomenko Thanks! Yeah the red looks pretty sweet ;)
cannot wait see your adventure and how it begins
writes the new motor fix in my little note book of tricks, ty guys Ive never seen something like this before
Just amazing! Great job guys!
Loving your journey thus far. Can't wait for the next one.
Wow, what a great update. I'm so happy for you :)
Congratulations. You are the inspiration for many of us, Even that we have been leaving many things for passion, love and courage you recall us many other reasons to continue. :) thank you:)

+Keep Your Daydream Woa! that is awesome. Best of luck on your journey~ Can't wait to find out more about it .
Cheers!
Wow! That is SO much quieter!
Just wait until you see our most recent video. Out next week. You can't even hear it anymore.
You are awesome - so many work on your boat and you all did it with your hands - great job - wish you a big adventure!!
Random thought. If the chain becomes problematic down the road, another option would be a CV axle similar to what would you would find on a small front wheel drive car.
