Valid point but I think when it is the (camera) review of the new flagship of 2017 it is relevant to put it into perspective, which should include last years flagship. Especially when there seems to be no difference based on the opinion of many. You have used other phones for perspective in the conclusion of this video but not the S7.
The Galaxy S8's camera is the very definition of a "Jack of All Trades" camera. It's an excellent performer in a lot of situations but does not necessarily excel or "specialize" in a particular aspect. In short, it's a great all-rounder. Should be a plenty reliable shooter for a lot of people.
D13H4RD2L1V3 to say it doesn't "specialize" in any aspect is inaccurate. To this day I haven't seen any other camera that have better low light performance than s8, or even s7 for that matter.
Ikhsan Hasbi The reason why I said the Galaxy S8 does not necessarily "specialize" in an aspect is because other competing options are equally as good, although they are limited. The Galaxy S8 is that camera that does really well in pretty much any situation. An LG V20 will record better video while a Huawei P10 has better stills. But these phones usually lack in some way or form, and that's where the S8 excels. It's not going to be the ultimate stills shooter or be the next professional videographer tool. But it is a genuinely excellent all-rounder camera that performs well no matter the condition.
Well, when I said that it didn't excel in any particular aspect, I didn't mean that it was an average performer. It is indeed excellent. But there isn't a particular aspect where it is heads and shoulders above everyone else. Perhaps low-light and autofocus speed can be considered aspects where the S8 excels, although the former is becoming a key focus point for most new phone cameras.
Great video Juan! Love the final analysis of the types of camera consumers there are, and how the S8 fits in the middle. I for one am very much in the "point and shoot" group, so the iPhone 7 Plus and Pixel XL do all I need them to do. Keep up the great work!

12 megapixels isn't that top-of-the-line anymore. It's not a stretch to see an S8 with a 16 megapixel camera at least. I think people were just expecting something higher than 12 megapixels.

Sadly not much of an upgrade over the last years S7.....was really hoping following googles HDR processing would help it be better but oh well...still a great performer

I ddnt know much about smartphone photography or just photography itself until Juan started the camera reviews. since then i have a manual camera app on my phone just to make the most of it, the camera reviews are just great. keep up with the good work
These are the best, most comprehensive smartphone camera reviews on TH-cam, bar-none. I'm a nerd and I like to watch tons of videos like these out there, but I am confident in saying that if I had to choose just one camera review to inform my decision to buy a good camera phone, the Real Camera Review would easily be my choice. Please keep this going! And everyone give it the support it deserves!
I'm hoping there will be some pre order goodies for the Note 8. After last years debacle I'm thinking they'll pull the stops out to make it a success :)
JuanBagnell I totally agree. If the on screen fingerprint scanner software was ready it would have been on this device and we may have has a dual camera setup. Also looks like the front facing camera has OS, but the software wasn't ready for that too. So the future for the Note 8 looks interesting.
Those real camera reviews have taught me, that even in flagships there is no best camera and you should make decisions depending on your style. Thanks for quality content and keep on good work!
The problem is that when a you hear an increase of 20% cpu performance for a new merk cpu it's only on paper and in theory but not in the real life. if you really want to use that extra 20% cpu performance you really really really need to heavilly optimize your software and it's not that easy so most of the time it's just about advertisment especially if we are talking about gpu.
ONLYMAFIA 1 just a shame because we know Samsung has some formidable software developer talent, but they don't always land the best software + hardware optimization.
I thought using the onscreen shutter button to zoom was pretty creative, but seeing you point out the issue with it, I'd turn that off in a second if given the option.

I mean I get it. The only aspect ratio better for a circular lens would be a square image sensor. But even LG is providing more in-app to justify the taller display.
+JuanBagnell they should have slapped a 21mp 4:3 sensor cropping 18:9 photos to let's say 16mp which would've been full WoW effect. Infinity photos. Wonder why I'm still shooting 16:9 at 16mp with the Note 5...

As a photographer and coming from the lg's great cameras, I can't stand the over saturatuion. It makes editing pictures so much harder and kind of makes my work look like garbage.

I'm tired of these tech reviewers. They just complain about everything. I love my S8+ and the camera is great. This reviewer exaggerated the way the phone is held during picture taking. You can also use the volume button to take photos so you don't have to touch the screen. This guy is too nitpicky
Darth Kadd it's a $700 phone plus new phones are coming out with dual sensors. Being nit picky is necessary at this point for people wanting a good camera with their smartphone.
@DeltaTeam771 Well guess what, it is a good camera, and YOU would not know for sure untill you personally have the device. These tech reviewers also said the fingerprint sensor is hard to reach and in an awkward spot even for large hands which is not true. I've never had any trouble reaching the fingerprint sensor. These guys just regurgitate what every other TH-cam reviewer says and implements their personal bias. I'm glad I didn't listen because I am loving my S8+ and I'm very happy with it

@Timothy Lim alright here come the TH-cam psychologists telling ME how I feel. I am not watching this video to justify anything. I happily bought the phone. "Tired" is an expression , duh. I commented because I don't like misinformation and as a person who actually has the device I can tell people who are interested in buying it that not everything that is being said is 100% accurate.
I don't know why people buy these costly phones.. while budget phones do the same work..calling, internet.. what they earn by these costly phones.. they r not gonna use these for professional photography..for sure.. they can't reach 1GB/ps with that 4gb ram.. The same games we can play on 300$ phones.....buy camers insted of these if u want to capture moment's, buy playstation that playing on this screen..

I have noticed that the lens has been improved. There is no more lens barrel distortion and refractions have been tamed to a degree. That makes me very happy. On top of the better ISO performance in RAW I would say the camera has been improved, just not enough for Samsung to make a big deal out of unlike the S7 launch
Nice detailed review, thanks for the hard work. I'm really surprised at how choppy the video recording got using full stabilization. I hope Samsung is able to improve that performance with future software updates.

It's the tricky thing about reviewing. The GS8 gives off a stunning first impression, so I think a lot of the early EARLY reviews fall for that design lust. We got ours late, so there was no incentive to rush out a review while we were still salivating over taking it out of the box. The nice thing about the Real Camera Review, we HAVE to put photos and videos up for you to check out and compare against our past reviews. I have to turn down SOME of my gadget lust, because the evidence is up on the screen and YOU can compare with past reviews.
JuanBagnell - I totally get what you mean. And now that you mention it, the "let's-rush-out-a-review-in-order-to-be-first-out"-effect only hurts their credibility. As matter a fact, I've already unsubscribed from 6 channels that I've been following for a long time and needles to say that you've earned a new subscriber/follower/fan. One thing only one person I've found in deconstructing video is that the S8 camera has image stabilization. You can see it after he mentions bokeh.

Hi Juan , I've been a fan of your videos ever since you joined Pocketnow. I used to regularly watch the Pocketnow Podcasts but I haven't had the time to listen to or watch them lately. But I never ever miss out on your phone reviews. I can't even imagine the amount that effort that goes into making these videos. Your Real Camera Reviews are by far the most extensive and objective assessment of smartphone cameras. On behalf of all viewers, I'd like to thank you and all other tech reviewers for putting out such quality content.
On a side note of the reasons that I started following Pocketnow was because of your (and earlier Michael Fisher's) love for Windows Phone. Too bad it's almost dead now. :(

it's always great to find a detailed phone camera review. I, with a lot of other people, appreciate all the work you put into it. plus you just gotta love the trivia at the end of the video 😊
I'm tired of these tech reviewers. They just complain about everything. I love my S8+ and the camera is great. This reviewer exaggerated the way the phone is held during picture taking. You can also use the volume button to take photos so you don't have to touch the screen. This guy is too nitpicky
Darth Kadd it's a $700 phone plus new phones are coming out with dual sensors. Being nit picky is necessary at this point for people wanting a good camera with their smartphone.
@DeltaTeam771 Well guess what, it is a good camera, and YOU would not know for sure untill you personally have the device. These tech reviewers also said the fingerprint sensor is hard to reach and in an awkward spot even for large hands which is not true. I've never had any trouble reaching the fingerprint sensor. These guys just regurgitate what every other TH-cam reviewer says and implements their personal bias. I'm glad I didn't listen because I am loving my S8+ and I'm very happy with it
Darth Kadd Im pretty sure you just want to justify the purchase. It's a review for a phone worth 800 dollars, so you got to be nitpicky. You were not tired enough to not comment on a video for something you said you were tired about, though.
@Timothy Lim alright here come the TH-cam psychologists telling ME how I feel. I am not watching this video to justify anything. I happily bought the phone. "Tired" is an expression , duh. I commented because I don't like misinformation and as a person who actually has the device I can tell people who are interested in buying it that not everything that is being said is 100% accurate.

I don't know why people buy these costly phones.. while budget phones do the same work..calling, internet.. what they earn by these costly phones.. they r not gonna use these for professional photography..for sure.. they can't reach 1GB/ps with that 4gb ram.. The same games we can play on 300$ phones.....buy camers insted of these if u want to capture moment's, buy playstation that playing on this screen..

I have noticed that the lens has been improved. There is no more lens barrel distortion and refractions have been tamed to a degree. That makes me very happy. On top of the better ISO performance in RAW I would say the camera has been improved, just not enough for Samsung to make a big deal out of unlike the S7 launch
Nice detailed review, thanks for the hard work. I'm really surprised at how choppy the video recording got using full stabilization. I hope Samsung is able to improve that performance with future software updates.
THANK you for the very FIRST unbiased review of this phone! You put to shame other "celebrity reviewers" that promise reviews and deliver fanboyism cakes or repeating whatever the previous reviewers had just said!
It's the tricky thing about reviewing. The GS8 gives off a stunning first impression, so I think a lot of the early EARLY reviews fall for that design lust. We got ours late, so there was no incentive to rush out a review while we were still salivating over taking it out of the box. The nice thing about the Real Camera Review, we HAVE to put photos and videos up for you to check out and compare against our past reviews. I have to turn down SOME of my gadget lust, because the evidence is up on the screen and YOU can compare with past reviews.
JuanBagnell - I totally get what you mean. And now that you mention it, the "let's-rush-out-a-review-in-order-to-be-first-out"-effect only hurts their credibility. As matter a fact, I've already unsubscribed from 6 channels that I've been following for a long time and needles to say that you've earned a new subscriber/follower/fan. Please continue doing what you do: Being a pro reviewer amongst media parrots!
