Just wanted to mention that when I recorded the video I was unaware that the original Kmart company owned the locations in the US Virgin Islands and Guam. I had thought the Australian company owned all the locations outside of the US so I was definitely incorrect in saying that this was one of the last two in the US. At the top of the video, I simply misspoke when I said this was one of the last two Kmarts in the world. I did mean to say country, but both statements would have been incorrect anyway. 😂 Either way we can all agree, There used to be a ton of these everywhere and now they're but a few left. Thanks for watching!

The company that owns the Kmart stores in Australia are basically franchisees. They still pay Transform SR Brands/Sears for the Kmart brand Licensing. But I understand what you meant . I just think it's amazing that the largest retailer in the United States basically went out of business because Sam Walton started a dollar store.

@@JeffDeWitt- I remember the *first* Kmart in Raleigh at the corner of Six Forks and Old Wake Forest Road. We moved to Raleigh in early 1968 and went there once or twice a month. My mother preferred it to Woolworth. It had a couple of those mechanical children's rides out front you fed quarters, a horse and a car of some sort. That location also flooded from Crabtree Creek periodically, along with the nearby Buick and Cadillac/Olds dealerships. Thompson Cadillac is still there. Nearby was an early round Hardee's and my favorite fast food joint, the long-gone Red Barn (building is still there, now a Biscuitville). Good memories.

I miss those stores too. For us, a trip to Montgomery Ward or Sears always meant fancier clothes for a special event or needing a new appliance. Everyday clothes or needs came from K Mart or Big K, which had no relationship to K Mart. We got our 1st Walmart when a Big K closed and Walmart moved in. Over the years we got a Ken's and a Magic Mart, but those would eventually close and left Walmart standing.

Hi! Before I made gaming content I actually made Kmart videos and so I can tell you some facts about this location not everyone knows! Before updating to the current logo you saw at the front of the building, This Kmart actually had a blue Kmart logo! This store is also well known and famous for being the Martha Stewart Kmart which could possibly be the reason it has lasted so long since the top 50 stores in the nation were gone before this went. Also, Kmart is still very big in Australia and some islands. And that is due too ESL Investments selling off those divisions of the company too other companies which actually made the brand last. This store was also a former W.T Grant, Then Woolco and even a Caldor.
And for anyone wondering this location opened on November 14, 1999.

Kmart in Australia first opened in 1969. The Australian Kmart was a 50:50 joint venture between Kmart USA and Coles. Coles is one of Australia's two major national grocery store chains. Kmart USA sold their 50% to Coles in 1977 and since then it has been entirely separate to the USA Kmart. As a kid I went to the first Kmart in Australia shortly after it opened and remembering it being very different to any shop I had even been in. Surprisingly it also had a cafeteria section with tables and chairs and served cooked meals on a plate with real cutlery. The cafeteria closed after a few years.

The eastern end of Long Island makes for an interesting refuge for some stores. Due to it being a somewhat remote, out of the way location, with limited competition, the few stores that are out there can hang on for a long time. Long after almost all Woolco's were gone, there was one that hung on out east, as well as a very tired A&P in Southampton.

Kresge's was originally what was commonly called a "dime store." These were similar to dollar stores but had a product line similar to a Kmart (usually not quite as extensive). When Kresge took this product line and put it into big box locations and expanded it, they called it Kmart.

This makes me so emotional to see this. I used to work for Kmart and I was there when my store closed in Florissant mo. It was last one in our area. I wish they would come back and be better than ever but they won’t and as far as I’m concerned Kmart is out of business and it will be another sad victim that will forever be known as only a bitter sweet memory that could have lived on. I will never get over it. this amazing retailer was killed by incompetence and deliberate bad intentions brought on by the sleaze bag hedge fund owner that ruined the company. Sure we were in bad shape before the Sears merger but we were still salvageable and could have been saved and we were better off without Sears who dragged us down even further. Thanks Eddie!

Did you ever shop at Walmart? Blame the people that did. I never did in my entire life (I’m 48). Those of us with an lQ above room temperature knew from day one that it was evil company who was intent on destroying every city/county it put a store in, by clearing out all the competition and mom and pop stores. And it wasn’t surprising when it came out in news story after news story how wickedly they treated their employees. They never saw one single red cent from my wallet because they are such a heinous company.
The people who didn’t care about anything besides saving a buck are to blame for shopping there and making Walmart so prosperous.

I would think this last Kmart would not be able to offer the kind of pricing they had back in its heyday because they used to be able to buy in large quantities back then when they had hundreds of stores to stock. II hope this last Kmart stays around for a very long time in its current state as a full-sized well-stocked store. For some reason, this store looks like it might have been a W.T. Grant, which Kmart had taken over many of their locations when they closed down many years ago.

Some of the best memories and years of my young life, believe it or not. I announced many blue light specials during my time there! Worked every department in the store besides the Eatery (deli)! No doubt the 2 remaining Kmart stores don’t have the renamed version: the cafe. Worked with some great people that were like family!
A lot of reasons the chain failed: embezzlement from a CEO, failure to update and change with the times, just to name a few. Once upon a time, it was the number 1 retail chain in the US, eventually dethroned by the up and comer Walmart. Sure miss having a Kmart in our town!

They lost the bulk of their customer base over 20 years ago to Walmart, Target and now I guess online shopping sealed their fate. Their prices were never quite as low as other stores, and most didn't offer grocery. It looks just like it did when I used to go as a kid in the 90s, except the store would be packed with shoppers and I would be glued to the video game department. I worked for K-Mart for 14 years in the Miami, FL area. Your video brought back a *lot* of memories for me! I even remember that song you played ("K-Mart is all the things a great store should be..."). That store, however, was a lot cleaner than the normal condition of my store. Parents would abandon their children in the toy department while they went shopping. An employee who thought the company was there to do what he wanted (think a male Karen) was finally transferred from appliances manager to straightening up that messy toy department all day. One of the just three remaining stores in the US is about 12 miles away from where I live. The store manager there worked in the photo department of the store where I worked in the ladies' and girl's department. That store is so empty and has so little merchandise that it makes me sad when I think back on what the company used to be like. I used to joke about that back then, but nowadays people would take that joke seriously. But, for your information, Sears Holdings is beginning to reopen some old Sears stores located in malls. I only hope that they do the same for some of the more popular K-Mart stores they also closed. Thanks for a bittersweet walk down memory lane! I enjoyed it.

No Amazon did not.....Wal Mart did! Wal Mart's sole purpose was to put Kmart, mom and pop stores, and other retailers OUT of business. They succeded. Amazon just jumped on the bandwagon.

@@lisah935 The truly sad damn shame about Sears is. . .they COULD have been Amazon long before Amazon was a twinkle in Jeff Bezos' eye. They had the brick and mortar stores but more importantly, they had the catalogs to sell their products across America. As a youngster, we waited anxiously for Sears and Montgomery Ward catalogs to show up pre Christmas. They were divine spectacles. Sears sold virtually everything one could imagine. . inclucing a complete HOUSE from a kit. Sears overwhelmed Montgomery Ward and Spiegels (their other catalog competition). They owned the day and might have owned the future but IMO, foolish decisions about the future and complacency made the fat cats comfortable. They didn't think Sears would ever fail. Then, the internet came along. . .Sears ignored the op to jump into the new sales arna. Jeff Bezos didn't. Look who's sorry now.

Yeah, a few years ago another company bought the name that's running those stores. They're basically an offshoot of the original company from the way I understand it. As far as original company stores go in the US though, these are the last two.

I would want to take a trip down there to check their Pokémon card section and toy section in particular. I used to get all my Pokémon, Digimon, Giga Pets, Nano Pets, and other virtual pets there. But then again, I also got those virtual pets at KB Toys as well. They still hold up today and actually made a comeback. Giga Pets are back by the original creators. And Bandai is still putting out the original Tamagotchis with the same programming but they are constantly coming out with new shell designs.

Aww, this was bittersweet & nostalgic. I miss the local Kmart and Sears that I grew up with. Walmart is Fie! to me.

There used to be two Kmart stores nearby. Both buildings are gone. Condo apartments sit in one area and the interstate and state highway go through the other area

Wow the last Kmart in my city 15 years ago looked like hell inside and that is amazingly nice. The last Sears lasted til about 4 years ago but looked just as bad as the Kmart. I saw Kmarts and Sears when I traveled the past 5 years that looked ok so it's amazing some were maintained and others not

When I was a kid me and my sisters would get so hyped anytime our mom or dad said we were going to Kmart. Not because of Kmart but for the Toys R Us right across from it😂 We always knew we would get to go look at cool toys and stuff😂😂

I worked at the Palatka,FL Kmart in the early 80's in the Electronics Dept and helped out in the Layaway Dept when needed. We even had a cafeteria in the store during that time. And the Blue Light Specials were a blast.
