Since everyone already knows it's delibird, I'm guessing zen mode will use one of the gen 7 games since that's where they have the earliest availability. Coincidentally this gen also introduced pollen puff, so I'm just gonna put out that I think present should be modified to function like that. If not, then at least make it a STAB move for delibird (either the present is actually an ice cube or it's flying-type cuz delibird is dropping it from the sky).
Other than that my best guess is that he'll add thematically appropriate moves to its levelup learnset like bestow, fling, or natural gift even though it's technically "nature's blessing" in japanese and isn't about a literal gift. Pluck would also be nice for STAB, but the point is that it would have a lot of item-related moves. Vital spirit and/or insomnia could even be replaced by an item-related ability like pickup or unburden, but one of them is definitely getting replaced.
Aside from that, I imagine zen mode will focus on giving delibird more utility moves that are usable in a playthrough since he usually avoids giving stat buffs. It'll be tough though since delibird's best moves like spikes and rapid spin are generally more useful in competitive than in-game.

I've always likes how Watchog looks like a weird neurotic crossing guard. I recently played the fangame Pokemon Tectonic, which gives Watchog a massive Sp. Def bonus, and so I equipped it with a fanmade item called the Hi-Vis Vest, which is like Rocky Helmet for Special moves. It, with access to Glare, (which I can't believe it doesn't learn naturally, look at its eyes, but I guess the move IS called "Snake Glare" in Japanese) was basically a hard-carry support for my entire run, and I was very happy to have it all the way through.

Obviously Delibird is next but I'd be curious to see how you'd rework Kecleon in gen 3. I think that Kecleon is very cool conceptually but it's ability largely works against it, not for it, and its stats are not high enough to make up for that either. The gen 6+ solution to that is giving it Protean but I'd be curious how you'd account for its weaknesses at a time when Protean didn't exist. Castform would be interesting to see too for similar reasons although both mon have the problem of not being accessible until mid-game and there's not a super obvious solution for where they could appear in the early game either. I'd be curious to see how you'd handle that too.

    • @LucRio448

Maybe have your father give it to you as a gift, you know, since he basically gives a rare mon to Wally, might as well give you - his own son - a rare normal type, liek Kecleon. Than have it learn Arm Thrust early on. Now you can have a success story of Kecleon shrugging of rock moves in the first gym from Nosepass and Onyx, dealing relevant damage, also dealing with Aron and Nosepass in the next cave, then also Magnemites afterwards, not to mention the Team Aqua grunts - suddenly Kecleon has established itself as a valuable team member early on.

Really enjoy the new moveset for Watchog, but was a little sad not to see Glare included with those eyes. Hypnosis is a good pick as well but I may have replaced Mean Look with Glare to offer a more accurate status move than Hypnosis.
Gaining access to a good paralysis move can also then help mitigate Watchog's speed disadvantage against later game Pokemon.
Anyways that's just the one move I'd personally switch out

I think a normal move that is super-effective to ghosts and applies foresight to the target would fit nowtowl's anti-ghost niche in gen 2. That or change its ability to mind's eye to hit ghosts and add hyper voice (lvl 15-20) and boomburst lvl (30-35) to its learnset. Tailwind, hurricane, and u-turn as level up moves would also be good.

The real strengh of the early game normal rodent, is that they are allowed to use much more powerful moves earlier on, while having a stat line above what other pokemon in the 20s have. Moves like Headbutt on Linoone or Hyperfang Raticate come to mind. Having these STAB options that early was really useful, since an effective power above 100 coming fom 70-80 atk is more than what your starter would have. Most starters at that time have an offensive stat from 60-80 and maybe a move like bubblebeam like Wartortle with an effective power in the 80-90s
The Watchog line doesn't really get that, learning hyperfang and Slam in the 30 - 40s at which point the moves and mons are just outclassed.
Now this is ignoring Scoutlands existance and competition with it, but I think one interesting way the Watchhog line could have been made better is if we made it play like Dunsparce. If it learned Body Slam at lvl 15 and got the Serene Grace ability, it would be a really usefull early game offensive support Pokemon, that trades speed for the ability to effectivley attack twice early on, since it would likely paralyze and then outspeed turn 2. At that point a small bulk increase might already be enough to give it a niche in the early and mid-game. Maybe add other good moves that would take advantage of the power of early evolution and Serene Grace, like either the elemental Fang moves or Crunch

After seeing how much damage Low Kick was doing against Lenora I looked up the table for Low Kick's base power. Any Pokemon between 55 and 110 lbs makes it base 60 BP, meaning it was doing just a bit more than Tackle. At 110 lbs to 220 it's base 80, meaning in late game that's usually what you're looking at, so Return would do more to basically anything you'd find in Unova that doesn't resist Return. Boldore is 224 lbs so it's barely in the 100 BP range. Klang is 112 so it's barely in the 80 BP range.

I love the safety squad theme going on. It's awesome how you are creating compelling story elements and adding them to your videos now.
Just a suggestion on making Delibird a viable pick: In addition to giving it small stuff like wing attack, quick attack, peck, powder snow, etc, maybe change how Present works. Make it so it targets all foes and allies like surf, except it heals your allies and hurts your enemies with a 15% chance to burn. I don't know if that's even possible to program, but it's still an idea nonetheless.

Glare would be cool for Patrat, except that its original Japanese name is Snake Glare. The only pokemon that learn it are reptilian. Personally, I've always wondered why Watchog was never given light-based moves (Flash, Dazzling Gleam, etc.), since its eyes and markings glow.
Pokemon I'd like to see reviewd:
    - Jigglypuff
    - Venonat
    - Lickitung

Incredible video as always but I only have one nit-pick here and is that I thinking conceptually you miss something to catch more efficiently patrat & watchog design & vibe and that is giving them the psychic type. Their design and pokedex entries just imply much about this with the ability to be awake for days constantly all seeing and watching (sleep deprivation definetely doing funny things to your mind), the hyper focus they maintain in their fronts that doesn't allows them to detect and enemy coming from behind and the funky hypnotic vibe that they get with their eyes and luminous marks in their body.
When you said at the beginning of the video you don't get what they are trying to make with patrat/whatchog learnset, I think it was this, trying to make a funky, psicodelic rodent which have a very disturbing and unpredictable nature based in their long nights permanently awaken, afraid and watching.
Psychic would also give him an interesting niche make him neutral to fighting and be able to use another stab, but is just an idea, again excellent video as always, really want to see more underdogs.
I'm still rooting for an oddish line fix that make them not a poor mans venusaur 😭. Congratulations on the video

honestly, the easiest way to fix the problem of opposing watchog being to oppressive is to literally swap keen eye and adapability's slots. iirc, opposing trainers only have the first slot ability, so moving adaptability to the second slot should fix most of the issue

  • @autumnwolverton4154
    @autumnwolverton4154 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Adaptability was a very cool character-based pick that enabled some really cool strategies - I don't think anything in canon right now can pull off Adaptability Fake Out + Last Resort! That said, it isn't something I would've thought of for Watchog myself. After all, as you made very clear throughout the video, Stoutland can already dish out all the Normal-type STAB damage you could ever ask for, and it's available just as early as Watchog. Giving Watchog a comparable damage output might make it a little less outclassed, sure, but now you just have two Stoutlands. I think the choice between the two would be a lot more meaningful if Watchog had its own niche that Stoutland couldn't do just as well.
Which is why I probably would've given it either Compoundeyes or No Guard instead of Adaptability - probably Compoundeyes, given that its massive hypnotic eyes are by far its most striking design feature. Having a significantly more accurate Hypnosis would make it incredibly useful in a way the Lillipup line could never compete with, especially considering it gets Hypnosis at only level 18, compared to, say, Amoonguss having to wait for level 62 to learn Spore. Granted, Compoundeyes Hypnosis is still only 78% accurate, not much better than Sleep Powder - but Sleep Powder still sees a lot of use, and in BW1 the only mons who can learn it are the Petilil line, so Watchog wouldn't have a lot of competition regardless. Combine that with giving it access to False Swipe, maybe even by level-up, and they potentially become one of the best catching assistants in the series.
And then there's Watchog's other memorable design feature - the bioluminescent stripes, represented by its Illuminate ability, which you opted to get rid of. This was probably the correct choice - although Illuminate is a perfect ability for the line flavor-wise, it would be really nice if it... You know... Did literally anything in battle... And wasn't actively detrimental outside of battle... That said, though, I still think it'd be nice to have that very cool and unique feature represented mechanically somehow. There unfortunately aren't a lot of good light-based moves in Gen V, but there is one that stands out - Tail Glow, which had just been buffed to boost Special Attack by three stages instead of two. And hey, some of Watchog's stripes are even on its tail! Giving it access to Tail Glow in late levels would make it into a fantastic user of all those TM coverage moves Normal-types can learn. Not even my beloved Audino would be able to compete with them in terms of damage output, although Audino would still have them beat in terms of bulk and versatility. But yeah, I think I would've gone a very different route in terms of buffing Watchog, focusing in on all the things that make them weird and different from other early-game rodents rather than making it more effective as a standard Normal-type.
Also, it's kind of funny that you spent the whole learnset section emphasizing cowardice and a tendancy to hide and flee - something that isn't even really part of the dex entries as far as I can tell - only to then give Frederick a completely different personality that's much more in line with how I actually see the Patrat line. Heck, Super Mystery Dungeon even has a Watchog as the uptight vice principal of the school you start the game at, with a somewhat similar overbearing safety-first kind of attitude iirc. Watchog are extremely cautious, sure, but I dunno about cowardly - it's more like they obsessively scout for danger and then work together as a group to avoid or overcome it.
Anyway, great video, and it's nice to see my favorite early-game rodent getting some love! I'll tune in next month for the Delib- Uh, I mean the mysterious December gimmick Pokemon, whose identity we have no way of knowing!

      get this man a true
the crossing guard theme in my mind really only fits a support pokemon
compound eyes hypnosis with options like baton pass sub fit so much better imo
adopting that identity would make watch play like an actual crossing guard, allowing its teamates to pivot in safely under careful supervision. making it an offensive powerhouse w adaptability is kind of like putting a crossing guard on hyper steroids and telling him to just destroy any cars that get too close to the crosswalk. you don't need to be particularily cautious or analytic when you have a 280bp nuke in your back pocket. loved the characterization and storytelling as usual with zen, but i definitely agree that the adjustments were a bit of a miss this time around.

I mean yeah, but Compound Eyes is a thing exclusive to bugs. It doesn't match the flavor of Patrat/Watchog. I agree that having an accuracy-boosting ability would work great, or some ability related to the eyes, but Compound Eyes would not fit the Pokemon flavorfully.
You know what would've been useful and made sense with its clearly special eyes? Tinted Lens, like Noctowl.

Can we talk about Bianca’s Oshawott at 26:06 ?!
    - It speed ties with Snivy, despite a base 45 speed to Snivy’s 63, which means IVs and Natures were on its side.
    - It immediately crits two tackles in a row, so now one more tackle will kill, with two more chances to do so if it wins the second speed tie.
    - …and yet, it goes for tail whip in both of those turns, allowing Snivy to win.
Incredible beginner’s luck followed by incredible beginner’s blunder, wow

Personally I think it would have been a great idea to give Watchog something along the line of compound eyes or no guard. Hypnosis has always felt like the main (and only) distinguishing factor for this line, which combos very well with super fang makes it a very good Pokémon catcher. Considering its great vision is its main motif, a perfectly accurate hypnosis would have made a lot of sense for the line.
I also find it a bit more of an interesting change than just giving a flat buff to stab, it would definitely give more personality to a Pokémon that does not stand out in any way.

Funnily enough, Delibird is almost okay in USUM. You get it on the first island where its stats are on the cusp of acceptable (especially with a Hustle boost). Hustle may sound super annoying, but you also get a Flying Z-crystal on the first island, and Z-moves ignore accuracy checks so you get a one-time super nuke out of Delibird. And Aerial Ace comes sometime in the second island as a tutor iirc.
It'll be fun to see what you do with Delibird in whichever game you pick!

i am 11 min into the video, but was looking into the pokemon's info and I thought of that:
    - it has analytic for hidden ability
    - if you gave it something like a focus sash, you could have a fun variety of moves for a physical set, which it can benefit more for its stabs
    - assurance (to hit everything it can't affect otherwise), retaliate, hyper fang
    - it also has access to flail. this route is less likely to succeed cause you would need to max its speed and give it a choice scarf and hope it didn't get one shot, plus having some speed control like thunder wave on your team, cause it is not really a speedy boy 😂
so it falls into the category of pokemon that gets access to good stuff but isn't blessed with at least decent stats to shine!

I think you kinda misread Patrat and Watchog's character. They're cautious, not cowardly. They post up like sentries and keep a lookout. Watchog glows like a signpost to guide its fellows and warn enemies away. Its dutiful and vigilant, not a fraidy-cat.
I would have leaned into the bioluminescence, giving it Electric coverage. And the big scary eyes and hypnosis/confuse ray suggest that some Paychic moves wouldn't be out of line.

There's a 99% chance that the gimmick Pokemon is exactly what everyone is thinking...
and yet I'm still holding out for that 1% chance of it being Castform. Hey, it does have a snow form which would fit the theme.
Even so, I'm looking forward to what it's actually going to be quite a bit as well.
Also on a bit of a tangent, but with how busted Adaptability was, you know a way to balance around that? If Adaptability was a Hidden Ability. Minus the fact that Hidden Abilities for B/W 1 are tied to a browser exclusive site that no longer exists, it would have been a perfect thing to give as a "rare ability".

  • @pizzahutkidman8806
    @pizzahutkidman8806 ปีที่แล้ว +3

If you wanted to make sure Watchog wasn't steamrolling players, the simpliest thing to do, from my understand, is to swap the abilities around. Have Keen Eye be ability 1 and Adaptability be ability 2. From what I understand normal trainers generally use ability one which is why some rom hacks swap ability 1 and 2 so then enemy trainers are more of a threat (for example Scizor has Swarm and Techicain in that order, but obviously the second ability is stronger, so they switch it to Techician and Swarm.)

I was not expecting a Route 1 Normal type to get a video, especially Patrat. While Black 2/White 2 would be helpful in providing Move Tutors, I can see that you chose White for the challenge.
I've used Watchog in the Gen 5 games to help catch Pokémon by using Super Fang and Hypnosis, all while holding the Wide Lens.
Adaptability is a good ability to buff Watchog. Because their vision is relevant to their design and Dex entries, I could also see Compound Eyes and Tinted Lens. Quick Attack, U-Turn, False Swipe, Thief, Surf, and Fake Out are appreciated.
I was so glad that you managed to get a Careful nature on Patrat as it fits how you described it and Watchog. I was also happy to see you choosing Snivy as your starter as Serperior is my favorite, fully-evolved Unova starter.

Moves i feel fit through level up are Bullet Seed and Seed Bomb , half of Patrats dex entries speak how it stores food in its Cheeks so I feel like these moves fit ( Watchog os eating the fruit in its cheek pouches and firing the seeds as projectiles )
Other moves that ALSO fit imo are the Elemental fangs , Watchog does have really large teeth so I guess it MIGHT make sense ?
Another move i also feel fits is " Nasty Plot " , Watchog a cautious and weak early route pokemon while watching from a distance thinks up of underhanded tactics to get the better of opponents much stronger than itself , which fits with Watchog having the highest Sp.Attack of all route 1 rodent pokemon , This along with Substitue would finally give Watchog a reason to have Baton pass as now it actually has relevant boosts that it can pass
