F-ZERO 99 - Hunting Grey Bumpers for Grands Prix
ฝัง

- When I first started the game I thought of Grey Bumpers as simple hazards you have to avoid and occasionally can get an extra extension for your Power Meter. Until I started to purposefully hunt them down to expand the Meter early on during Grands Prix. Since the player carries on the Power Meter into the next races of a GP and Mini Prix, this method can give you an advantage over other racers.
For this guide I tested the Wild Goose and Golden Fox. The Wild Goose can take bumps and hits more easily than any other machine. The Golden Fox can refill the Power Meter extremly fast by driving over Pit Areas, which makes this a very viable strategy for it. But it also works for any other glider in the game. Just take a little more care of your bumping with the Blue Falcon and Sting Fireray when you go on a hunt.
7 KOs will extend the Power Meter to it's fullest
I hope this helps you out!
Happy driving
this is impressive that's a huge energy bar, good video 👏
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
THATS WHAT SHE SAID!!!
😏
This is some really good tech to point out especially for goose players, balancing good opportunities mostly means doing it when you're already unable to contest first place and goes hand in hand with farming sparks. This is really disruptive to attempt on Golden Fox unless the match is already going very poorly, so if someone can get a couple KOs and still place well they should be able to get a boost advantage to beat dominant line runners pulling out in first but never gaining boost.
However on golden fox when you do get the KO's you become basically untouchable so it still stays a high risk high reward maybe skewed a little too hard towards reward.
No way you came up as my rival the other day! Saw how many wins you had and I was stunned haha
So cool that we all see each other thanks to the Rival system making it more apparent who you are going up against! I keep seeing players from TH-cam or Twitch in my races :)
Love all these tips videos dropping for this game, instead of people just hording the info
Great video, thank you 🙏🏽
Didn't realise they gave you meter, I thought it was only other players that did that.
If they gave you full meter, the top players would be hogging them all in the front to fully refill, and the entire game meta would be built around destroying them just to keep up with the race leaders who have a full meter full of boosts. I am glad it works this way, you get back the health you expended to destroy them, so there's a small benefit to destroying them.
Also, it's better to kill them and get health back than bump into them and simply lose health, or crash into a wall to avoid them. Just gotta spin at the right time.
Now do a tutorial on hunting red bumpers :V
Never really considered hunting bumpers on purpose. Sounds like a smart idea, especially on the GP because your power meter retains it size between races.
Yes! And the Wild Goose seems like the perfect fit for that kind of strategy
I NEVER KNEW THIS THANK YOU!
it WHAT!?
It does?
This game requires so much strategy, it's kinda insane
F Zero 99 is going to be so good with all of us getting better and better overtime.
This is one strategy that I didn’t think of, so I’ll be taking it and adding it to my game. Thank you
Yes, I can't wait to see how this games evolves
Me being crap at this game "yep better"
I had no clue about that mechanic and great tips as well. Thank you for posting this
You are welcome!
Holy crap, it’s that easy huh? I was avoiding them like the plague, including the blinky ones, trying to avoid damage. Seeing the huge benefits here, nice!
Well, I wouldn't say it's all that easy. Kinda hard to focus on bumping grey cars while still doing well. I think it's best to try and take down a grey car if you can, but don't focus too much on it since it could end up losing you your top place.
@@thenonexistinghero I typically try to rack up 4 or 5 of them on the 1st track and then use that to carry me during the other 4.
Picking off bots that die easily to gain a huge competitive advantage later. It's Tetris 99 all over again. Thanks for the tutorial!
This time even for beginners it's easier to spot a bot in that sense since you can't mistake them for actual players (with the exception of BOT players on the field)
It's what I do, it's extremely important if you're using the Wild Goose or the Fire Stingray
It's also pretty nice for the other vehicules but for those two it could mean that you could have some turns where you do more than one boost without being greedy
It really elevates the already great Wild Goose!
I'm gonna be honest, its partially a skill issue, but I feel like going for KOs (ESPECIALLY easy ones, funny enough) just results in me wasting too much time and or health and 90% of the time someone else just swoops by out of nowhere and gets it anyway. I feel like at least for me it's better to just try and get good placements, I just end up in the 50s or dying otherwise. If there was a better way to practice it than just throwing until I get good at it, I'd probably give it more thought. That being said, I'm sure there's a place for this playstyle and that this video is helpful advice to someone
I can see it being a little tough the first few times you try it, especially since you can't practice offline.
It helps to know that the placements and spawns of the Grey Bumpers and Bombers always stick to the same routine, so after a while you know which one to attack if it's affordable for you.
If you see them moving apart from each other when usually they should not, it's because other players bumped into them
It's definitely not worth it on single races, but it's good to have in your back pocket for GPs.
What i do is practice being aggressive on single races first. That way when i do grand prix, i can use what i learn from there
In single races it's probably more valuable to just be on the lookout for players to KO, especially if you're in the wild goose or something like that. Or focusing on collecting sparks for more skyways
I guess the question is…is it worth it to slow down and hunt the grey bumpers? Are the top players doing this in Grand Prixs?
I would wager that it's good to do this in the first lap
@@Syllaren they appear in the first lap?
@@Jlopezocasio oh yeah shit maybe not. Tbh I never really paid attention to them since I'm just a scrub playing for enjoyment rather than optimizing. Ok if not maybe it gets a lot harder to justify the time of farming them. Definite balancing act x.x
The first race in a GP is recommended. A good balance between getting some KOs and not placing too low in race 1 will make all the difference for how you fare in the upcoming races of a GP.
So far the Wild Goose worked best for me here
@@Master_A1 at what point should we do so and how? Where do they first appear? Near the back or the front? How do we make sure that we are not wasting too much time? (Hope I’m not being a hassle)
As soon as I realized they also benefit you to ko I thought some people would try aiming for them, but affer seeing how much damage you take from bumping them I decided to avoid all the non blinking ones. Guess I gotta try hitting them sometimes especially in grand prix because they look easy enough to take if you can handle the damage
The Wild Goose is the solution if you purposefully want to bump into them multiple times as it can take those hits better than any other glider
With that big of an energy bar is it more effective for a golden fox player that can regen most of it? Or have you tried on different combos?
On some courses I imagine it is of help even for Golden Fox players, since the pit differs in length on the courses, making it possible for the Fox to refill more Power Meter than what it usually could with a standard Power Meter
It's never NOT worth doing. It's extra health.
@@roetemeteor It depends actually, if you look at the Top Golden Fox players, they want to get ahead as quickly as possible and not stop, dodging all Bumpers and Bombers coming their way and minding their own business. Unless there's several Golden Fox players of equal skill, they probably don't need to attend KOs for their Power Meter.
As of now in the right hands, the Golden Fox is untouchable, and to maintain their dominance they try to speed through courses without stopping
Fantastic guide! Do you happen to know how many grey bumper K.O's are needed to max out your bar?
5 if I'm not mistaken
There's also a badge for gaining 5 KOs in one race
@@Master_A1 And a Double KO!
@@Nicl-As-05u sure about the double ko one ?
@@SECONDOWave There is a badge yes 100% sure! I havent gotten it though...
@@Nicl-As-05 I don't know what they call double ko bcs I have a clip of me ko'd two players in less than a sec and didn't got it
The bigger energy bar persists between races! So try this out on a grand or mini prix!
It can work, or too many people can go for it at once and everyone gets only 1 bumper. Communism.
It also doesn't get more painful than hitting a flashing bumper, killing it but the game goes "NUH UH" and you ain't got no KO's
It can be disheartening when you don't get the KO for putting in effort (and sometimes time or energy). A little bit of gambling and risk-reward sprinkled in there for sure.
In general I think Grey Bumpers most likely have the potentionaly lowest health during Round 4 and 3, since more red Bumpers get added while Greys were driving on the road for a long time, getting bumped more frequently, especially in races with many players
I thought bumpers only gave you a slight energy boost, and the extended meter's only for player Kos
I figured that many players thought so!
I've been wondering how to pull off bumper KOs more consistently. It's such a commitment to take one out from full health.
It's certainly the most risky for Fox and Stingray to do this since Fox is sacrificing the most durability and Stingray is giving up precious momentum for a relatively low payoff due to its high boost cost.
Notice how the ko at 00:55 doesn't extend your energy bar.
This confirms that 7 kos is the max extension achievable
Ah. My problem is going from 1st to 80th trying.
If you really struggle with the placements while going for Greys, better only pick the heavily damaged ones to KO
I know that It wouldn't be a thing specific to FZero 99, but could you do a video about drifting. I know a lot of people who don't really understand it.
Are we talking drifting in racing games or controller drift? 🤔
@@Master_A1 They probably meant in racing games like this one. I would personally like to know if drifting is a thing in this game as well, and if it’s useful.
@@mariocraft3067I will put out a video for beginners and experts with what to know about driving in this game involving drifts, spins, bumps, spacing etc.
Quick! Someone send this video to GrandPooBear!!
Can you give me tips on getting ko’s and being aggressive?
If you want to grab less time consuming KOs, look after blinking or smoking player gliders or Grey Bumpers. Players tend to move to the outside when they are weak on energy. If you spin into them, they usually should get knocked out.
Make use of your spinning attack as a defensive AND offensive tool. Sometimes a good defence will give you surprise KOs. Also when you notice one player being low on health and they are rushing to the pit, remember their glider or name and go after them. They might lose all their health after a few attacks (unless you have to deal with a Golden Fox player, then they should be hard to crack once they made it to the pit).
Don't spam your spinning attack and wait for the right moment if you go out on a hunt. Or else you might miss your change of a KO
@@Master_A1 Thanks I’ll keep this in mind. :) Do you have any tips on the Blue Falcon? (My preferred ship)
Spin them into nasty spots. If need be grind them against the side.
Anyone else have times where you KO a bumper but for some reason it doesn’t count?
There is mostly 2 reasons for this:
You get a KO and the Power Meter extension, but the voice jingle doesn't trigger
You knocked out a Grey Bumper on your screen, but another player hit it on his screen before you did, so he gets the Power Meter extension
Lag is the reason why the game often makes the impression that you should have gotten a KO on Bumpers or even players
Can you imagine the skill ceiling for this game in just a few months?
It's gonna be wild
I've never found it worth it to go chasing these unless they are already flashing even after following this guide. There are just too many factors fighting against you. You have to slow down so much that it can take it from the lead into halfway down the pack. You're also damaging yourself the whole time and exposing yourself to being damaged further. On top of those problems someone can (and constantly has for me) just come in and perform the last blow on it invalidating all your work.
I do wonder how much the most consistent GP winners are actually doing this KO strat. I would guess it's most suited to Wild Goose only and everyone else just relies on observation, good driving, and a lot of luck for any KOs, and they make do with however much max energy and recovery stat they have without having to fish for more.
Just like how if you don't start the race near the front, you can gather a lot of sparks to use Skyway and pull ahead at just the right time, but that doesn't make lagging behind at the start a good strategy.
Thanks for this guide. I somehow managed to get up into A+ while still not having a clear understanding of whether they were both damaging and rewarding or just rewarding. I'm still trying to get some of the paints where I need to win a race or a GP with a specific machine, and I've been feeling like I've climbed the skill brackets too fast. Now, I know what I'm missing.
I guess I got some tech to start learning before the GP events start. Thanks for the guide!
EDIT: Nearly 10 mins after I made this comment, I'm starting to realize that this tricky as hell to do consistently lmao
EDIT2: Still tricky to do consistently, but I actually managed to pull this off on a Golden Fox for Queen League, got 2-3 KO's on Bumpers and got 21st, snagged 1 more KO on Port Town 1, and proceeded to 1st place the rest of the GP!
Well done! It's tricky for sure, but it's also very useful to practice on and see how helpful it can be
I haven't played in awhile, but I'm still lacking a GP win for both Falcon and Goose. The Goose, might get away with a GP win without having to farm Bumpers, but Falcon, I will have to consider using the method. Only problem though, the Falcon is kinda underwhelming at times, so I have to practice this tech, and I said before, it's hit and miss for me still.
I might have a chance now that the game is slowing down, we'll see. 👍
I genuinely thought their only purpose was to be obstacles
@Master A1, I thank you loads of times for this method, really helped me win Kinght League with Wild Goose! 👍😀🎉🎊🏎🏆
On that attempt, I managed 6 KOs and finished 9th, then won the other 4 races!! 🏆🏆🏆🏆
Very clever, didn’t even think to chase them down like that. Much appreciated!
I always struggled in GP to be in the top 10. I tried this strategy and it really worked well. 2/3 gray bumped killed on the first race is sufficient to keep a good pace for the rest of the GP and beat those Golden Foxes.
TY very much !
I had no idea KOing grey bumpers had a benefit
Thanks for posting this! I had figured out most of it already, but your video answered the questions I still had - like that bumping and spinning are about equally good for attacking the greys.
Been trying to go for 5 KOs to get the badge, but bumper behavior is very inconsistent. Sometimes I speed boost spin attack them for an easy multi hit KO, and other times they toss me off course. I main Wild Goose, so this puzzles me.
Thanks for the guide! Just a question: if you got a ko on a bumper, you slightly refill your energy but if you got a ko on another player ship, your energy will be fully refilled? Idk if I understood well
Correct!
Ah, I thought I was supposed to avoid these grey cars. LMAO thanks bud
We were in the same boat :D
dude youre like a little bumper goblin, eating up their energy to grow
The first moment i read hunting gay😂😂
I'm starting to love this channel now. I always used to try and avoid the gray cars
I never would have thought of this!!!
I had no idea bumping into them without spinning still damages them enough, gonna have to try going after them more
You can even knock other players out without using a spin, as long as they are damaged enough!
OK but what's stopping every one else leaving you in the dust to be ranked out? It makes no sense having to go out your way to get some KOs while the first place guy does nothing but coast with ZERO boosting. It makes no sense.
During the early days you could go after Greys as shown in the Solo Hunting section of the video. Nowadays I only do it that excessively when I already have enough points to rest in during a GP, especially with the Wild Goose since the added Power gives it a go for many more additional Boosts. It's still in the Meta, just shifted more towards Greys that are already heavily damaged and certainly isn't recommended for full health Greys, which was mostly shown in the video to explain health of Bumpers and what's technically possible
stay away from wild gooses
this is a pretty cool video
ok thx for the tips
I simply don't feel this is worth doing in most situations. I would rather destroy them with a single hit
That's why there's several methods shown in here, for situational Solo Hunting with explanation on Bumper health, and going after Greys that are most likely already damaged while surrounded by a group of other players. It's all about timing and also taking risks to get rewarded
You are playing the same language as I do!😆🖒
Ein Freund aus Deutschland? :)
@@Master_A1 JAAA, ICH BIN AUCH DEUTSCH!!!😆😆😆
I am learning Norwegian and I find it kinda amusing how much of several other languages I am picking up on. Swedish, Danish, German. It reminds me of my days learning Latin and seeing words I understood in French and Spanish and Italian and Portugese.
If only I was any good at learning one language, I'd be able to learn them all, but memorizing vocabulary words is very hard for me. If I don't do it every day I don't retain it well.

@@askthepizzaguy I live in German so no prob. I had to learn English in school so I know that its very hard...
Ah nice
what's the point of increasing your max capacity though? I never have full energy anyways so i feel like this wouldn't help. Am i missing something?
You do have full health at the beginning of a race. The extended Meter serves a meaningful purpose during GPs and Mini Prix, but especially Grands Prix.
You carry over your Power Meter to the next races
@@Master_A1 ah, I was unaware that the meter extension carried over during cups. that's really cool then! thank you for the tip! I hope I can squeeze some top finishes with this
I love this game
Damn, I thought I wanted to avoid hitting those
Your power goes down when you hit them though. This is not a strat
It refills enough when you destroy them to make it worth it, and for the cost of a second or two in one race, you could have several extra boosts in all future races in a grand prix.
2 seconds investment for being able to go 600 kph instead of under 500 for I dunno, 20 seconds worth of time, over the course of a grand prix?
I suck at racing, but yeah. It is a strat. I've seen people use this strat on youtube to get a full health bar for race 2 of a grand prix and then win the whole thing.
If you arent getting first place on the first race, why not get first place in the next 4 races? This strat works for that.
Is there a cap to how much your max health can extend? I can already see you can extend it to lengths that don't actually seem that practical for most car/course combinations.
7 extensions/KOs appears to be the max. It's still possible that some gliders can extend it either further or less, but so far from playing with the Wild Goose and Stingray it looks like 7 is the lucky number
I don't know how you keep the lead while doing that. I barely graze one and immediately 40 people pass me, lol
I like the combos where they're directly in front of you and your own speed keeps pushing you into their back, and you rack up the needed five bumps in like one and a half seconds.
That makes it worth it, in my opinion, in a grand prix. heck, it's a little gamble for a regular 99 race. If you can get a full refill off of an actual player, having that full refill also be extended to max is niiiiiice. But there's definitely a time, skill, and machine energy investment for any payoff, and without the skill, it's not worth it. And it's tough to get more skilled unless you dedicate yourself to hunting these things in a bunch of meaningless 99 races while you're waiting for a fun event.
I basically use the 99 races to practice some kind of skill, either trying to keep a lead, learn where the best skyway starts are, or practice destroying things. I need the practice since I somehow got A- rank and I am nowhere near skilled enough to compete with other A- rank players. My rivals kick my ass.
I have yet to survive an entire grand prix race, so having an extended health meter for the whole thing is kind of my top goal right now. It sucks to suck.
You invest in the first race and then have an advantage during the next races in a GP. Picking up and going for already smoking Greys is almost always a low risk investment. Keep in mind that others might spot them and go after them, so being closer to Greys or blocking the path to them can make the difference
Great Video bro!!!
Thank you!
eyo, deutsch
:D
Pretty useful for all vehicles on grand prix, since you start at full at the beginning of each race. On single races its probably only maybe useful for the Golden Fox though since it gets healed so much each lap.
Here's hoping i can get the 5 in one race badge.
Should be much more manageable thanks to Grey Bumpers!
Good luck on your attempts for the badge!
@@Master_A1 I managed it!
Yeah just don't go out of ur way to get one
I think it always depends on the situation. Is it the first race? Do I already have a lot of points in a GP and can take the risk to temporarily lose ranks during a race to get additional safety or wiggle room for the rest of the race/races? When they don't smoke there's always gambling involved. To hunt those CAN pay off, but doesn't necessary do so. Wild Goose certainly works best as it doesn't lose too much health nor get bumped too much
Been doing this since the start, but good to know that there are others who take to this skill, cause it works in the long run. 🗿👍🏽
Thanks for the new strategy I mean I knew they gave boost when u spin KO them but this is good to know

interesting, i’ll keep that in mind. also i recognize you as my rival every now and then. im assuming you also did not get the top 100 badge because of a bug?
Hi there! I remember your name from previous races :-)
The first week I didn't play enough for a Top 100 overall spot. Friends of mine were affected by the bug though. Crowdi reached #1 and didn't get a badge either, unfortunately... And I read on reddit that many were affected by this.

@@Master_A1 ahh okay. well if you do plan on getting top 100 do not look at the leaderboard right after reset, i have a feeling this was the cause since so far all the players affected by it did that (myself included)

If you do this again. I wanna see thr maxed out bar filled up as it goes purple.
