Lived there for a couple years due to work about 10 years ago from Toronto area. From my own personal experience, the best thing about Calgary was the people; amazing very nice friendly people. Found them more approachable than in Toronto.
Dry skin, dry sinuses and dry eyes. Six months of winter with poor snow clearing on the secondary streets. It's a great town but it is far from perfect.
5 reasons for me to like Calgary. 1. Winter is not as cold as I thought 2. Really nice summer 3. Nice housing price 4. Banff is just on the corner 5. So many nice parks in city.
Honestly... this is why we love it too!!! There truly are so many parks, the winter really isn't that bad AND the mountains? WOW... Calgary is incredible!

Great for anyone with asthma if humidity triggers attacks. I love it here and have for 24 years. Only had 5 asthma attacks in all those years. Moved from Ontario where I usually had an attack every couple of months.
Calgary may not be for many but I moved to Calgary back in 2019 from the Toronto area and I personally love it here, more laid back, but all in all I do prefer living here in Alberta, got fed up with all the stress of the east

It made me chuckle! The only draw back is the dry eyes I can handle the rest. Calgary is a great city to live. Coming from GTA for a better part of life and settling here for 9 years it is really enjoyable. Yes… there is a East and West culture and I do miss the Great Lakes BUT I have mountains! When you east from Calgary all you see in flat fields and when the sun set down it is breath taking because you see no skyscrapers. Ya this is the place to be…
number 5 doesn't apply. you don't have to own a car for a decent life if you live in downtown area and beltline area. those areas are really urbanized and you don't need a car for living.
Absolutely correct. Lived downtown for 14 years now, and Briarhill/Hounsfield Heights before that. Never owned a car. Totally doable. Especially since there are car sharing services you can use on the occasions that a car is very helpful.
Agree! I was thinking "What is he talking about?" Many areas are walkable/transit places, the best as mentioned is the Beltline area, I lived on 11ave and 17st, and in Bankview....also lived in Northeast and walked to the C-train....or Huntington Hills..I bussed to a lot of places with good schedules and routes. Calgary is big and spread out, but are you going to all of it everyday? No, you will be living in your own community and going to surrounding areas. Their trains are in four directions and have expanded over the years and cover long distances. If a person's work is on the opposite side of the city then a car is a better option especially in winter.

Moved to Calgary from Winnipeg and 3 out of 5 reasons mentioned were also the 3 reasons why I prefer it in Calgary. Winter is not as cold or as long, summer is not as hot and it is also not as humid. While Manitoba has a lot more lakes, it also has more mosquitoes during the summer months. So personally, not having that many lakes is a plus for me too.
@patrickfriesen2323 Winnipeg was a great place to live, and if it weren't for a job opportunity in Calgary, I probably would still be there. But personally, it is no contest. If the proximity to the Rockies isn't reason enough, I could think of a hundred other reasons as well. Shortly after we moved, we had a visit from some friends from Winnipeg, one family already moved to Calgary a year later, and another is also moving here soon, few others have expressed interest in doing the same too.
@@dok418 yes that is a good reason. I plan on moving out there soon and I’m from Winnipeg also. I have family that live in Kelowna so it’s way closer for me to get to them.
@patrickfriesen2323 there is a bit of white knuckle driving (for me at least) going up and down the mountains, but the drive does gives you a lot of great views.

Calgary is awesome predominantly because of its proximity to epic mountains. You can get your own Lord of the Rings vibes by staring at the misty mountains while you're busting you're ass at work.

In Victoria, I didn't like the tent cities and junkies all over either, especially when they randomly punch you downtown... Or hit you with a golf club. Even had a junkie take a sh*t right infront of our apartment building! Maybe it was a nicer city to live in 20 years ago, maybe even 10. Victoria and Vancouver have really declined in quality of living and safety recently 😭. Grande Prairie we have harsh winters, but no tent cities and junkies 👍🏻 and sun even in the winter!
Great video. We love beaches and have a property in sylvan lake. We ended up moving to Edmonton to be closer to it. So, if you want to be closer to lakes, Edmonton is the best place to be.
Interesting. Sylvan Lake is actually 1 hr 37 min from Calgary and 1 he 41 min from Edmonton. I’d say your as close living in either city. Now if you wanted to get to larger lakes like Invermere, BC you are 3.5 hours closer when living in Calgary.
Moved here in 2018, the thing i hate the most is if you love your car youll hate it here. So much gravel on the roads its like you are in the beach lol, windshield replacement and hood and bumper full of rock chips. Your vehicle can be 5 yrs old but itll look like it is 15 yrs old. And also just got hail damaged last year as well

Yes, this is a big problem for me too. Growing season is waaay too short for most of my veggies. And it never really gets hot I get 1.5 harvests from one medicinal herb that in metro Vancouver I get 3.5
Calgary has one of the most successful urban rail systems in North America, one of the largest pathway and trail networks and a growing urban cycling system. At least a third of the city was built before the continuous bastardization of car dependency. Lot's of communities are very walkable and accessible for people who don't want to own cars. This is a very poor stereotype of the city
Thank you for taking time to comment Justin! It’s true that many communities have the walkability within the community and that the pathway systems are ever growing… for some, or many, whether it laziness or weather, choose to drive way more than commuting in other ways. For not owning a car at all, finding a location that has everything you need that you can walk to or have easy access to transit would be important. There’s options for all!
#5 is a grasp & a half. the transit is better than any Canadian city & there are countless alternate paths that are foot & bike accessible. Go Chinook way it gets a little iffy but seldom do you need to go so far south (unless you live there obviously) YYC is huge but not uninhabitable if you don't drive. very far from it; it's such a warm & welcoming place. So if anyone reading this is thinking about moving here; DO IT!
Good explanation, I want to move to AB. Although Ontario is fun to live in, it has lots of fun places and delicious food but everything is expensive, I can’t survive here. My monthly expense is approximately around 2500 without shopping, and some people have even more expenses. I don’t have money left for vacation, especially since the flight ticket to China is way too expensive. Therefore, even though I live in Ontario but I don’t have a chance to go out. Another reason is our job, some of my friends work 6 days per week from 9-9 if they don’t work they can’t pay their mortgage. They don't even have time to vacation. Sometimes we can go out to the zoo or Canada Wonderland, I have gone there many many times. There are a lot of people and it's hard to park not just Wonderland is the entire downtown, take the bus, no parking space, but taking the bus took me about 1 hour and 30 minutes to get downtown, I guess I'm not an outgoing person. If I have some budget left, I won't live in AB all year, I can travel each year to get a one-month vacation to somewhere else that is warmer during the winter😂😂😂
Landlords should also one of the reason.They say something else and do something else.I mean to say they ask rent first and tell everything included in that than start asking for utilities so they don't like to be on their words.This happened with me 3 times in Calgary.
That’s rough. Sorry you’ve gone through that. Outside of the Alberta Tenancy act there isn’t a set guideline on how landlords should conduct business. I can assure you that not all landlords act this way in Calgary. Thank you for watching and commenting and hope you are able to find a better property and experience for you in the future.
Spot on and why I am leaving - two unacceptable features... 1. Winter cold and wind 2. Car-centric city And I am a 'snowbird' spending only half the year here. I ignorantly presumed that the warmest months would be warm enough. Nope, not at all. I spend six months in tropical countries so I am in shock every time I return. Junuary is reality. Summer heat? In 2021 it lasted about two weeks. Seriously! Regarding using the buses, the routes run N-S not E-W except in a couple of places, not late at night and follow circuitous routes. They run close to empty. But since owning a car doesn't make sense for only half the year (insurance, storage etc), Calgary is not suitable. Even my working poor friends own cars. Quo vadis? Banana belt of Medicine Hat or Swift Current. Maybe even Moose Jaw or Regina. As a retiree I can live anywhere with cheap rents which BTW Calgary does not have.
Find activities that you love doing and meet people doing it. Love sports? Join some leagues. Enjoy woodworking? Find a place to do and meet people there. This too works for sales and growing a business 😉 People love being and working with people like them!

Don’t let any of these become deal breaker. You would never know what you would be missing. Especially if you love mountain climbing like I do. The blue sky’s, Oh. It’s a Godly place. But if you are not highly skilled or entrepreneurial it can also be a tough place to find a job and settle in.
Its the largest bicycle path system in North America, and to cycle downtown isn’t that bad, city does a pretty good job of cleaning the paths in the winter
How about moving from Quebec southern Alberta ? Let say maybe two hours south of Calgary ? Not to far from the US border and not to far from the mountains ? Any nice little towns down there , with a good community ?

If you like a city that is 97% sunburns, far from everything, expensive, with a tiny downtown that gets empty at around 11:30 pm in the weekends. That is 5 hour flight far from every nice beach in Mexico or Caribbean or Hawaii .. then consider moving to Calgary

I could not handle that for 6 months. Having said that, I'm coming back in October so this could be interesting :)
If you’ve only visited for short times during the winter you may not have seen them. Whether you believe it or not it’s a real thing that is amazing!!! Hope you get the chance to experience them.
😂 those dry eyes are most probably because of age, I’m 40, and I live in Malaysia (tropical, insane humidity 24/7), my eyes get dry easily starting 1 year ago, so yuup, blame the age
Chinooks are horrible.. it's still cold - except everything melts and it gets nasty. Don't forget about the migraines that go along with it. nothing good about them
I loved the weather in Calgary, lots of sunshine, 32 Celsius in the afternoon, 15 Celsius at night, no one I knew had an air conditioner. I remember BBQing on February 14th, it was 21 Celsius, good times, yeehaw!
But that Feb temp is a rare thing, too much winter and when the cold snaps hit it really sucks, I would rather be admiring daffodils and other flowers in Victoria or Parksville while maybe wearing a hoody and then going paddleboarding and golfing, Alberta winters suck.

Unlike many other parts of Canada, Realtors don't help with rental properties in Calgary and Alberta. Finding a rental is typically done through kijiji.ca or rentfaster.com, which are the most popular sites. Even doing a google search for fully furnished house rental in Calgary will bring up the right results for you.

Don't move to Calgary if you like a mall with 5.3 million Square feet that comes with scating rink, pirate ship, wave pool, hotel and many other things inside the mall for kids like amusement park ect. That is 3 hours away in Edmonton Alberta. If you don't mind the 3 hour drive to Edmonton then move to Calgary.
I want to make YYC work but the weather and climate is just too harsh. Born and raised near Vancouver. I love the rain, ocean, greenery etc… unfortunately I’ll be renting forever here.

I live in Edmonton. We are far enough away from the mountains so it isn't as windy, not as cool in the evenings in the summer, and not the drastic fluctuations in weather during winter. Plus we have the largest parkland in North America. Our River Valley is 22 times bigger than NYC's Central Park! And yes, you can always VISIT Calgary. It's only 2 1/2 hours away by car. Calgary's advantage is that you are only an hour away from the mountains, if you like hiking/skiing etc. But again, did I mention our River Valley? Hiking and cross country skiing is great!

If by drastic weather fluctuations you mean the amazing chinooks we get with prolonged warm weather during the abysmal winter months, then yes... So painful to endure here in Calgary. As for cool evenings in the summer, no idea what that is... I've been to a desert aka Arizona and that's understandable but definitely not like that here. I haven't experienced much of the river valley but I know our fish creek park that extends around the city is spacious enough that I could go everyday and never run into other people. I know the debate is fun between cities but honestly only ever gone to Edmonton for work. Even my coworkers come here every year for our zoo which is better, stampede, food and music festivals, and of course for hiking and the mountains... No brainer sorry!
@@bananawammabama the Chinooks yes are an issue. The quick melt then the refreeze makes driving there the sh*ts, lol. I prefer the weather to stay more stable. And the WIND, omg the WIND! Oh, and no protestors here still protesting mandates that no longer exist in Alberta. We are free of that here in Edmonton! Did I mention the world class events we have held? From all the stadium concerts, U2, The Stones, and other huge acts who come to Edmonton because of our Commonwealth Stadium. The Commonwealth Games, the world track and field championships - both of these are summer Olympic caliber events - the Indy races, nation finals Rodeo, world triathlon, second largest fringe fest in the world, best folk fest venue, hockey dynasty, best hockey arena in North America. I think you guys held a winter Olympics once which was excellent btw. I enjoyed the John Candy movie based on it. Ooh, that reminds me, SCTV with John Candy was shot in Edmonton too! Some great episodes with Edmonton as the backdrop. 👍
I lived in Calgary for 3.5 years. It's the worst place to live. Such a cold place it is that socks. It's a Damn terrible place when it comes to employment and weather. All the economy is just oil and gas dependent and when oil prices drop.... There's no way a person finds at least a living job.

In Victoria, I didn't like the tent cities and junkies all over either, especially when they randomly punch you downtown... Or hit you with a golf club. Even had a junkie take a sh*t right infront of our apartment building!

Victoria and Vancouver have really declined in quality of living and safety recently 😭.

Great video. We love beaches and have a property in sylvan lake. We ended up moving to Edmonton to be closer to it. So, if you want to be closer to lakes, Edmonton is the best place to be.
Interesting. Sylvan Lake is actually 1 hr 37 min from Calgary and 1 he 41 min from Edmonton. I’d say your as close living in either city. Now if you wanted to get to larger lakes like Invermere, BC you are 3.5 hours closer when living in Calgary.

Moved here in 2018, the thing i hate the most is if you love your car youll hate it here. So much gravel on the roads its like you are in the beach lol, windshield replacement and hood and bumper full of rock chips. Your vehicle can be 5 yrs old but itll look like it is 15 yrs old. And also just got hail damaged last year as well

We have indeed. Feels like each summer has more of these days than the last one.
Calgary has one of the most successful urban rail systems in North America, one of the largest pathway and trail networks and a growing urban cycling system. At least a third of the city was built before the continuous bastardization of car dependency. Lot's of communities are very walkable and accessible for people who don't want to own cars. This is a very poor stereotype of the city

It’s true that many communities have the walkability within the community and that the pathway systems are ever growing… for some, or many, whether it laziness or weather, choose to drive way more than commuting in other ways. For not owning a car at all, finding a location that has everything you need that you can walk to or have easy access to transit would be important. There’s options for all!

#5 is a grasp & a half. the transit is better than any Canadian city & there are countless alternate paths that are foot & bike accessible. Go Chinook way it gets a little iffy but seldom do you need to go so far south (unless you live there obviously) YYC is huge but not uninhabitable if you don't drive. very far from it; it's such a warm & welcoming place. So if anyone reading this is thinking about moving here; DO IT!

Good explanation, I want to move to AB. Although Ontario is fun to live in, it has lots of fun places and delicious food but everything is expensive, I can’t survive here. My monthly expense is approximately around 2500 without shopping, and some people have even more expenses. I don’t have money left for vacation, especially since the flight ticket to China is way too expensive. Therefore, even though I live in Ontario but I don’t have a chance to go out. Another reason is our job, some of my friends work 6 days per week from 9-9 if they don’t work they can’t pay their mortgage. They don't even have time to vacation. Sometimes we can go out to the zoo or Canada Wonderland, I have gone there many many times. There are a lot of people and it's hard to park not just Wonderland is the entire downtown, take the bus, no parking space, but taking the bus took me about 1 hour and 30 minutes to get downtown, I guess I'm not an outgoing person. If I have some budget left, I won't live in AB all year, I can travel each year to get a one-month vacation to somewhere else that is warmer during the winter😂😂😂

Landlords should also one of the reason.They say something else and do something else.I mean to say they ask rent first and tell everything included in that than start asking for utilities so they don't like to be on their words.This happened with me 3 times in Calgary.
That’s rough. Sorry you’ve gone through that. Outside of the Alberta Tenancy act there isn’t a set guideline on how landlords should conduct business. 1. Winter cold and wind
2. Car-centric city
And I am a 'snowbird' spending only half the year here. I ignorantly presumed that the warmest months would be warm enough. Nope, not at all. I spend six months in tropical countries so I am in shock every time I return. Junuary is reality. Summer heat? In 2021 it lasted about two weeks. Seriously! Regarding using the buses, the routes run N-S not E-W except in a couple of places, not late at night and follow circuitous routes. They run close to empty. But since owning a car doesn't make sense for only half the year (insurance, storage etc), Calgary is not suitable. Even my working poor friends own cars.
Quo vadis? Banana belt of Medicine Hat or Swift Current. Maybe even Moose Jaw or Regina. As a retiree I can live anywhere with cheap rents which BTW Calgary does not have.

You could get away with it, but most likely you’ll find you may need a car still for outside of beltline. Calgary really is a driving city.

Don’t let any of these become deal breaker. You would never know what you would be missing. Especially if you love mountain climbing like I do. The blue sky’s, Oh. It’s a Godly place. But if you are not highly skilled or entrepreneurial it can also be a tough place to find a job and settle in.
Its the largest bicycle path system in North America, and to cycle downtown isn’t that bad, city does a pretty good job of cleaning the paths in the winter

If you don't like hot summers stay away from Medicine hat. I had to move away cause it's too damn hot.

If you like a city that is 97% sunburns, far from everything, expensive, with a tiny downtown that gets empty at around 11:30 pm in the weekends. That is 5 hour flight far from every nice beach in Mexico or Caribbean or Hawaii .. then consider moving to Calgary

at 1:33 in you have lost me. I am laughing so hard. You love chinooks that bring your temps UP to 0 or -5? OMG that is hilarious. I have been to Calgary in mid winter and it was sunny but freezing. I could not handle that for 6 months. Having said that, I'm coming back in October so this could be interesting :)
You would die in Edmonton then, the ice and snow never melt, no chinooks...melts in spring that's it. So cold

Actually calgary is pretty damn good for not owning a vehicle and you even mentioned one of the reasons…. There are A TON of paths/bike paths

I loved the weather in Calgary, lots of sunshine, 32 Celsius in the afternoon, 15 Celsius at night, no one I knew had an air conditioner. I remember BBQing on February 14th, it was 21 Celsius, good times, yeehaw!

But that Feb temp is a rare thing, too much winter and when the cold snaps hit it really sucks, I would rather be admiring daffodils and other flowers in Victoria or Parksville while maybe wearing a hoody and then going paddleboarding and golfing, Alberta winters suck.

Unlike many other parts of Canada, Realtors don't help with rental properties in Calgary and Alberta. Finding a rental is typically done through kijiji.ca or rentfaster.com, which are the most popular sites. Even doing a google search for fully furnished house rental in Calgary will bring up the right results for you.

Don't move to Calgary if you like a mall with 5.3 million Square feet that comes with scating rink, pirate ship, wave pool, hotel and many other things inside the mall for kids like amusement park ect. That is 3 hours away in Edmonton Alberta. If you don't mind the 3 hour drive to Edmonton then move to Calgary.
I think if someone wants to live by West Edmonton mall, they should live near there too 😂

I live in Edmonton. We are far enough away from the mountains so it isn't as windy, not as cool in the evenings in the summer, and not the drastic fluctuations in weather during winter. Plus we have the largest parkland in North America. Our River Valley is 22 times bigger than NYC's Central Park! And yes, you can always VISIT Calgary. It's only 2 1/2 hours away by car. Calgary's advantage is that you are only an hour away from the mountains, if you like hiking/skiing etc. But again, did I mention our River Valley? Hiking and cross country skiing is great!

If by drastic weather fluctuations you mean the amazing chinooks we get with prolonged warm weather during the abysmal winter months, then yes... So painful to endure here in Calgary. As for cool evenings in the summer, no idea what that is... I've been to a desert aka Arizona and that's understandable but definitely not like that here. I haven't experienced much of the river valley but I know our fish creek park that extends around the city is spacious enough that I could go everyday and never run into other people. I know the debate is fun between cities but honestly only ever gone to Edmonton for work. Even my coworkers come here every year for our zoo which is better, stampede, food and music festivals, and of course for hiking and the mountains... No brainer sorry!
@@bananawammabama the Chinooks yes are an issue. The quick melt then the refreeze makes driving there the sh*ts, lol. I prefer the weather to stay more stable. And the WIND, omg the WIND!
Oh, and no protestors here still protesting mandates that no longer exist in Alberta. We are free of that here in Edmonton!
Did I mention the world class events we have held? From all the stadium concerts, U2, The Stones, and other huge acts who come to Edmonton because of our Commonwealth Stadium. The Commonwealth Games, the world track and field championships - both of these are summer Olympic caliber events - the Indy races, nation finals Rodeo, world triathlon, second largest fringe fest in the world, best folk fest venue, hockey dynasty, best hockey arena in North America. I think you guys held a winter Olympics once which was excellent btw. I enjoyed the John Candy movie based on it.

I lived in Calgary for 3.5 years. It's the worst place to live. Such a cold place it is that socks. It's a Damn terrible place when it comes to employment and weather. All the economy is just oil and gas dependent and when oil prices drop.... There's no way a person finds at least a living job.
