Sancho is very limited physically, he's intelligent but lack pace and athleticism for a winger, which makes him easy to defend against.
How Jarrod Bowen doesn’t get a mention is beyond me. Second most combined goals and assists (for an english player) in the premier league only behind Harry Kane. Carried West Ham on his back at times. Great work rate and one of the best wingers in the PL at the moment. Shame about his slight injury set back.

Yes, his set piece is great, but TAA is not far behind, plus Trippier is good at set piece as well... but outside of set piece, there are many better in midfield than him. Tammy Abraham goes all day long for me, he’s done amazing in his first season in Italy and saved Roma a lot but other than Kane we need a tall, fairly fast proper No.9 Striker and granted Kane isn’t the fastest nor can he dribble as well as the wingers they selected but we need good old fashioned strikers and we need at least 2 incase Kane gets injured or struggles to score

@@bugsy4914 You must be too young to remember Brazilian Ronaldo, plus you have Pele, Cruijff, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic, Shevchenko, Owen, Van Nistelrooy, Crespo, Mbappe, Rooney. All players who have played as a striker for a while at some point in their careers or for all of their careers and can dribble beyond fantastically and better than a lot of wingers at their time of playing and also ever to play football. The harsh fact is Kane is just an old fashioned English No.9 Striker, slow, not great at dribbling but amazing in the box with head or foot and to be fair to him he can certainly pass the ball quite well but yeah he’s way too slow and clumsy to ever be considered a great dribbler or even good. That’s why I’m saying England need a prolific No.9 Striker who can score with both feet and head and find those good positions but also account for Kanes pace and dribbling ability so Tammy would be great with his pace etc. I would love to see Rashford leave Man Utd and convert to a striker too, he has so much potential but he’s wasting his time and confidence at a lacklustre Man Utd squad that could benefit from some Sir Alex type of management

Hes always reading the situations really well, against Swiss there was countless mistakes where you know it wouldnt have happened if he was on field. The team look alot weaker without him. Theres a reason he was the england player of the year and the player with the most time on pitch. With Philips and Rice that england midfield is solid af, we need them both for the cup or we have no chance.

He only played trippier the first game against Croatia at left back because he was up against player who always looked to cut in on his left foot so with trippier at left back he could natural shape his body and step across the player and cut him out with his right foot
Precisely, what people don't realise is that Trippier NEVER played on the left until Gareth asked him to for England and if you ask me it's painful to watch him there as he's constantly cutting inside onto his stronger foot.

I am here after watching england's friendly against switzerland and I can say that gallagher was the biggest threat for the opposition. That guy is just top level. He is so energetic. This england team has so many top players now, it must be really difficult for southgate to pick his team.

ESR isn't in contention. He's good but Kane and Sterling have to go. Foden and Saka are clear. And I'd rather take Grealish or Bowen than Smith Rowe. I think hes in a similar situation to Sancho. Everyone knows he's quality and deserves to at least be on the plane but there's too many good players and you have to leave some people out. Also Gallagher has to go can't believe they left him out.

Honestly the disrespect to not even give James Maddison a magnet. He has the most G/A out of any English midfielder this season and has been Leicester’s only good player. Does he go to the World Cup? Maybe not, but he has to be in the conversation.
To that I could argue that JWP has only 1 less g/a than Maddison while playing a much deeper position. He also has a higher conversion rate while also having much better defensive capabilities and is the best current freekick taker in the prem. Maddison is still a country mile ahead of Harvey Elliot though, who should be nowhere near this squad

gallagher was amazing next to henderson last night though. it was so refreshing to see a CM for england being creative through the middle, instead of forcing it out to the wings for our creativity. for me, the midfielders we take are: Hendo, Rice, Bellingham, Mount definately. possibly Gallagher, possibly Smith-Rowe. Philips has been fairly silent for me this season. May be bad club bias on my part but I don't see him in the conversation right now

I think a problem with Luke Shaw is he’s been lumped in with Maguire and Rashford as having poor form after the Euros but he’s not been anywhere near as bad as them. He’s not been good but he’s been mostly fine.
Fine won't win a world cup though. There are plenty of fine left backs. When England have so many talented players and have to narrow it down to 23 fine won't cut it.

James Maddison goes. He has been unreal this season and for his name not even getting a mention is diabolical. This man has got 20+ g+a this season alone. He creates space like no other attacking midfielder (with the exception of foden and maybe mount). He draws found near the box. This man has also proved himself as a world class player who can play at CAM or even out wide (like an improved and more in form Jack Grealish.) For him to not even get a mention is absolutely shambolic. He goes to Quatar this year. He’s relatively young and has shown his class an uncountable amount of times. I only take Ws.

To be frank, Sancho competes with Saka and Sterling rather than Grealish or Foden. Both Grealish and Foden can play CAM or LW, which fits more into Southgate’s game plan. Sancho is a wing attacker only, similar to Sterling, so Sancho competes directly with Sterling. Even Saka can play Right Back under Southgate.

The great thing about have this much depth of talent is you can adapt the team depending on who you're playing. If you think you need pinpoint crosses from deep to beat a low block you play Trent, if you think you need to overload the wings with overlaps and get to the byline you play James. Also I'd love to see what Gallagher could do if given the chance. Reckon he'd take the game in his stride if Southgate trusted him to start in midfield.

@@vicvinegar4540 Yeah they went way too heavy on defenders, especially as stats have shown that in tournaments you want to bring more attackers. Because defenders are less injury and form prone, plus tire less during a match. and it gives you more options to change the game up.

They put through chilwell way too quickly. He’s been injured all season and luke shaw has done so well for England. Yes he’s not been as good for Man U but he’s part of that core group that Southgate has built that can be awful for club but play well for England. I don’t know whether it’s how much the shirt means or if it’s Gareth’s system but we saw evidence that Luke shaw can still play well for England. He saved the game against Switzerland. I think people forget the key to a good team isn’t the best players in the best form but rather a strong core of good players who know how to play together.
That’s what Akinfenwa is trying to say when discussing Maguire and Pickford. You don’t see Klopp, Tuchel and Pep just drop 5 players if they are out of form. Good relationships between players in internationals is so important, take the English “golden generation” for example. The United players, Chelsea players and Liverpool players all hated each other and we got nowhere.
So by retaining a good core of players who know how to play together Southgate will 8/10 times get better results. Yes we can integrate, Tomori, Gallagher even Maddison and Ramsdale, but this will come with them getting to know the squad and players around them.
Well said. It's fun making and debating these squads but at the end of the day if we want to win a tournament its about the chemistry the team has on the pitch. People can argue all they want about Smith Rowe being marginally more productive than Saka this season but Southgate has integrated Saka into the England team over time. He's been to and played in a major tournament now and knows what to expect and will be comfortable on the pitch at the World Cup. Southgate will do the same for Smith Rowe in the future and his time will come. Same goes for a lot of the other debates. It's why Sterling goes regardless of his form - he's experienced and that makes it easier for him to perform on the big stage. I would like to see Southgate give the likes of Tomori more of a chance however because he is objectively a better CB than Maguire. If Southgate can integrate him like he has done with other young players that would give us a great shot.
