    Shura, from the Japanese root for Ashura, also carries the meaning Carnage. The game implies that "Shura" is a state attained by endless killing and combat, and that once one has become "Shura", they are driven purely by the revel of battle, unable to stop killing until slain themselves.
    Poor Emma trained to kill any Shura that may come about, but it was for naught.

      You call that training? Emma didnt last 2 mikiri counters. It feels like nobody cares if you go rogue. If you choose to do the right thing tho, everyone still turn on you and they level up. Righteousness is a thankless job in these types of games

      Ashura comes from ASURA in sanskrit, which is Indian, the land of the Buddha. In Sanskrit it refers to a race of demons, opposed to the Gods.

    I love how the Ashina swordsmen (and swordswomen in this case I guess) carry a certain similarity in their fighting styles to reflect the fact that they all learn from the same school of combat.
    There are variations to separate them from each other and showcase how skilled they are from one any=other but they all specialize in the Iaido style quite a bit coupled with some grapple techniques.
    It's a small touch I like. Little bit of world building that is fun to notice.

    • @HappyPotat
      @HappyPotat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I also really like how Isshin has a dodge that is basically a small step out of the way. Not a giant movement, just a slight shift away from the swing.

    • @WiigWiig
      @WiigWiig 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@HappyPotat Yeah! There are a lot of nice thematic details like this in the attacks and moves of enemies in the game, like the similarity between Emma and Isshin's fighting styles. Another example, the owl is the one enemy in the game that can mikiri counter you, and he also is the one enemy in the game who can attempt a shinobi deathblow on you when you get posture broken which makes you realize those aspects of the wolf's combat style came from him. Isshin and Genichiro share a specific sword flourish/gesture. Genichiro makes the gesture after defeating the wolf in the beginning of the game, and sword saint Isshin performs the same gesture just before beginning his fight with you.
      The most interesting one is Genichiro's flowing sword combo, which is in fact the same graceful attack used by the female warriors found in the fountainhead palace, and it is actually a technique you can buy from the pot noble who is also associated with the fountainhead palace, it's called floating passage. It makes sense because Genichiro was taught by Tomoe of the divine realm. This is tied together by the descriptions of the floating passage technique and the spiral cloud passage technique (an upgraded version of this same technique) which describes the bond between Tomoe and Genichiro. Also, Emma has this dialogue when you give her dragonspring sake: "I'd go to the Fountainhead Spiral. ('What is that?') If you look out towards the Fountainhead springs... there is a large spiral of clouds visible in the distance. Lightning bolts would race from one cloud to the next. In fact... I distinctly recall Master Genichiro practicing his swordsmanship there All the while glaring at the lightning in the clouds." This all does a lot to give you a feeling for this unseen character Tomoe, and gives depth to the tragic character of Genichiro, who was once a young and hopeful youngling carrying the legacy of his forebears, doomed by his total and pure devotion to a dying Ashina that he ultimately cannot save.

    • @justinlee790
      @justinlee790 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@WiigWiig A slight correction, but Tomoe and the other Okami don't hail from the Divine Realm per se: while the Fountainhead Palace is a gateway to the Divine Realm, it's still located in the Mortal Plane, and the Okami were at one point Human before continued ingestion of the Fountainhead Waters changed them over time (a process that can be seen with the Mibu Head Priest, if he is given Pure Fountainhead Water). That being said, given Isshin mentions being taken by her (presumed beauty) and Tomoe didn't seem to be shunned or decried in Ashina as inhuman and evil like the other Okami, I imagine Tomoe still looked Human.
      Back on the topic of sword techniques, another interesting thing to see is the fact that many Ashina Swordsmen use some variant of Ichimonji, which is fitting considering it is described as being a technique at the heart of the Ashina Style. Even all the way up to both versions of Isshin.

      When Kuro and The Divine Child say that The Dragon's Hertitage corrupts people, they are not wrong in the slightest. Every single betrayal and every single kill Owl commits is in service of his ultimate goal which was to become Immortal via The Dragon's Hertitage. It's a shame, he could have been one of the most well respected warriors of his time.
