Every once in a while I think about which band from my past I would want to get back together. Then I remember what the recordings of those bands sounded like and I think "naah." I'd rather keep finding people who are better than I am to play with, that way it forces me to improve.

@@jimijackson I feel the same, incredibly angry! I wonder where that monster is now? But as far as a reunion, even a temporary one, sometimes they can be disappointing. And the more you care about it, the MORE devastating that would be!
In my mind, The Beatles are the most perfect band there ever was, so I am the perfect candidate for absolute devastation.
I finally saw Pink Floyd in the mid 90s, because this part of Canada never gets good shows. My disappointment was extreme! It sounded like garbage, and even the large dose of LSD I took didn't help. It was an outdoor concert on a nice late summer's day, and a large group of good friends walked there. It was really nice.
So what could possibly go wrong? The band itself was completely flat, with no enthusiasm at all, and that feeling pervaded the entire venue, so much so that I left before the end. And I idolized Pink Floyd! All of my life I'd been waiting to see them! So I'm glad I haven't had my feelings about The Beatles dashed in the same way.
It reminded me of what a friend said when I told her how much I'd love to see my first ever boyfriend, and she said it might be better for him to remain perfect in my mind.
Perry Prudhomme (sp?) of Kars Ontario in 1974-75, do you remember Barb, from the small goat farm? I've always loved you, and never forgotten. ❤

Love it Rick - the big difference between today's music and "our" classic rock, as far as I can tell, is the newer folks just don't have the diverse background in blues and jazz like you do that influences their writing and arrangements. I had the opportunity to get together with the guys I played with in the early to mid 1980's (last century lol) - we had moments of brilliance and moments of completely sucking. The bottom line it was a riot, and we hope to be all in the same place again so we can have another great afternoon of fun! Way to go - hope your session with Billionaire goes fantastic - as no doubt it will.

    • @cattymajiv
      @cattymajiv 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

And of classical music! I think it added so much more to rock than any other genre did, although all of the diverse influences were SO important!
Our music had so much depth. Not every song. Some were just fun, bubble gum stuff, but that was also a big part of it. Rock had some of absolutely everything!
Today's garbage music has only 1 influence. MONEY! And nothing else matters to any of the artists that are big, like Taylor Swift and Miley. I spit on them, figuratively. I just can't even listen to it.
There are still some good musicians with a variety of influences, but sadly that kind of music doesn't get widely heard anymore, partly because people with talent and visuon avoid the music business. It became such a cold and barren place with nothing but demands for everyone involved to sell their souls. So anyone with a heart, or talent of any kind said "This isn't what I want to spend my life doing!"
Because of that, today's young people have mostly not been exposed to anything but the autotune crap that passes for music these days. When Rock started to become Pop with the influence of Disco and Micheal Jackson, the writing was on the wall. Death was approaching. It has arrived a long time ago now. I hope for the sake of humanity that something positive happens in the world of music, because without that form of such beauty, mankind is lost.
Sorry to be so depressing, but that is my opinion.

I've never had lessons and just recently figured out CAGED up the neck, and a couple arpeggios in C. For 10 years my guitar playing pretty much hit a wall because I didn't understand the neck, but because of you and Paul Davids it's starting to click and I'm getting those feels again like I did when I was a kid. There really is no better feeling And it's still just fun. You guys are great, thanks for the feels, can't wait to hear Billionaire live.

Thank you for getting me going with this tuning that is actually incredibly simple! I have a tuning from the 2001-2003 period that I can't remember, but it had a lot of the same sounds with the droning, open sus chords. Some of the stuff that I was doing sounded remarkably similar to this and I am going to watch this again to see if I have any of the same progressions so that I can vary them. My melodies were different and I really had some fun with the bass given all of the inversions my alternate tunings seemed to unlock for me. This tuning is very simple to remember and if I can easily reach all of the chords or inversions of them, I just might use it!

It's never a mistake to go back to live playing. Wish my favorite singer-songwriter had gotten her old band back together; sadly, she hemmed and hawed a bit too long and the drummer passed away earlier this month from cancer so it will never happen now.

Good stuff as always Rick! Both Gibsons sound sweet. Thanks brother! Isn't it a shame that there isn't an acoustic guitar emoji? They need to fix this! 👍👍🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

Tori Amos’s latest video (Gold Dust) is absolutely stunning! Beautifully written and orchestrated. There is still a lot of great music being made but these days you have to look a little deeper than what is currently considered mainstream. Aurora is another example of a current artist putting out some amazing material. If you haven’t seen her video (The Seed) or her cover of David Bowie’s (Life On Mars) they are both worth checking out.I’d love to see you do an interview with either one of these wonderfully talented ladies.

Thank you for mentioning them Allen! I will check them both out immediately! The comment section of any one of Rick's videos could keep me entertained and happy, all by itself. There is such a wealth of knowledge here, and so many interesting comments. I love to spend my free time here! ❤

This makes me smile... brings me back to the sounds that me and my bandmates were doing in the 99/00/01 era... trying to explore new music (being influenced from the early 90s grunge),but wanted more melodic/symphonic arrangements ..... those broken sus2/4/9/11/13 riff/chords that can only be found in alternate tunings... this video brings me back to that dingy basement with poor lighting ... and trying to get my MiniDisc 4-track recorder with a cheap mixing board to capture demo sounds...... its the total last 'gas' of 'grunge' desperately trying to find next century meaning..... some sort of poetic nonsense..... total garbage.....and yet so meaningful. I love this video!

Really enjoy your musicianship, Rick! The way you parse songs from different artists from so many genres is incredible. I especially enjoyed your treatise of Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind", as I am a HUGE Lightfoot fan, and played a lot of his music on stage for many years. Now, as I am returning to my music in retirement, I am especially aware of the nuances of the music, especially as I am returning to the studio to record and re-record some of my own songs. I am hoping they will be successes, if only to have you review them would be a success for me...

We Canadians treasure him so dearly. And I am still very much mourning his recent passing. If You Could Read My Mind is my favorite song of his, and one of the best songs ever written. 🇨🇦
