  • Buenos Aires, Argentina, is the most-visited city in all of South America. And no visit is complete without a trip to La Boca, a colorful neighborhood that in the late 19th and early 20th centuries experienced a massive wave of Italian immigration. Today an estimated 62% of Argentinians claim some Italian heritage. Correspondent Conor Knighton gets a taste of Buenos Aires' best pizza, gelato and Italian liqueurs, and surveys the imprint that Italian immigrants had on Argentina's art and culture.

Italians in argentina call themselves "tanos", but it's not slang for "italianos" as the video suggests. It actually comes from "napuliTANO", which means "Neapolitan", because many Italian immigramts came from the southern region around Naples.

Actually, the Italian migration in Argentina was pretty even compared to that of the US, where most of the Italian immigrants came from Southern Italy particularly Sicily. The first wave of immigrants actually came mostly from the Northern regions of Italy, like Piemonte, Liguria, Lombardia, and Veneto. Popular dishes in Argentina like the pascualina, faina and copetin came from Liguria, the mortadella came from Emilia-Romagna, and the milanesa (cotoletta) came from Lombardia though it is originally an Austrian dish. The second wave of Italian migration was actually mostly from the South like Campania, Sicilia, Puglia, and Calabria.

Messi even receives envelops to vote when the time comes ahah, but their only connection to Italy is family heritage. They are first and foremost Argentinians. Well Dybala always played in Italy. And when Messi walked in San Paolo, Naples, so many ARG-ITA connections came up: Italian roots, Maradona, etc. I believe Messi closing his career in Naples is the dream of every single Naples supporter. He would fit with the city instantaneously.

All through the Southern States of America they lynched Italians. They lynched Italians in Florida and took pictures of the body and made postcards out of them. During the second war they placed over 600,000 italian-americans in prison camps. Still today in America there's hardly any Italian Americans living in the Southern States of America. I always found it fascinating when I studied Behavioral Science and International Relations in college how these migration patterns developed. Like how millions of Italians went to Argentina as did the Irish to the USA in the early days of immigration to the American continent. The Spanish did the same in Cuba to a lesser extent and the same goes for the British, French and Germans respectively to the USA and Canada. I understand that there are still small communities of people that kept their language and culture from prior generations and are alive and well throughout LatAm. Places like northern Mexico and Nicaragua, San Vito CR, Santo Domingo DR, San Carlos de Bariloche, southern Chile and Brazil, etc...

One day we should organize a sort of "Italian Day" for all the people around the world that have Italian heritage. Maybe even some kind of organization to strengthen our bounds. Trade, collaboration, diplomatic efforts in order to facilitate progress of those countries that have the same origins.
If not properly "Italian", at least a "Latin" organization. We could all benefit from it.

Many times, when I asked how to get to some place, not only did they tell me how to get there, but also they walked with me to that place! I don't intend to move abroad, but Italy is a place I would return for vacations every year. Being in Italy is like being in Argentina. What else could I ask for?

Tango is an influence of hundreds of nationalities. One of them being italian music, vals, but also cuban rythms as well as african and even brazilian dances such as xango. To say tango is an only european based dance is a huge minimization of what it truly is. It's terrible. The main communities remaining are the guaranies (who can be found in the Argentine mesopotamia and parts of Paraguay, inventors of Argentina's most popular beverage, mate), the mapuches, living in the Patagonia. In the north you may find kollas, diaguitas (north/centre of the nation as well) and many many others.
