People talk about the benefits of tourism, but increasingly, as foreign investors buy up hotels and turn housing into B&Bs, the locals are relegated to waiting tables and cleaning rooms. In exchange, they find themselves priced out of local restaurants and crowded off of local beaches, etc. International Corporate Tourism doesn't bring the kind of benefits tourism did 30 years ago when local residents owned the businesses making all the money. If locals aren't profiting from tourism, having drunk rowdy tourists roaming the streets all night loses its appeal. They're no longer tourists, they're invaders.
It’s already too late. My recent trip to Italy was a nightmare. No crowd management, tourists packed into historic buildings almost to the point of panic! I doubt I will ever visit a large city in Italy again.
Never been to Italy. My dad was there during WW2, but not as a tourist, that,s for sure.Recall him saying that if he won the lottery he would move to Northern Italy or Southern Germany, have relatives in Garmisch
I've only been to Italy once, about 25 years ago. So glad I went when I did. No smart phones and obnoxious selfies. Tourists were generally pretty respectful.
Ora l'Italia è più accogliente per i turisti di 25 anni fa, puoi tornare tranquillamente sarai ben accolto. Non ascoltare gli invidiosi che non ci possono venire.
They’re not “breaking up” with tourists, they’re just trying to maintain order and ensuring the fair access of locals to their own communities. If only Mexico could pay attention to this and do something with gentrification and the privatization of our own patrimony…
the flip flops is because of the hiking.... it's not safe! many tourists take some types of excursions lightly. The result is that the authorities increasingly have to provide assistance. In Italy the health and emergency system is free for every person, even for foreigners and tourists. Taking off a helicopter with a rescue team has a cost, this cost is paid by the community. When you tackle a mountain trail, you better be equipped. Otherwise you could get hurt or even die and the Italian authorities pay the economic cost.
About bloody time. i spent a month in Italy about 5 years ago, mostly in & around Prato & popped into Florence a couple times of & there were way too many tourists & I thought this must piss off the locals no end. Also noticed locals wear sandals, not flips flops. Only saw East Asians, Indians, Africans & Australians wearing flip flops there.
Yes. Contemporary casual clothing lacks class and elegance, per se. And most tourists act like they came from the boondocks (mountains)! Whenever I visited Old World cities, I always brought with me a White Tie ensemble, silk socks and Opera Pumps shoes, just because...
During 70s and 80s I worked in Rome for one month each year. Way back then it was a nightmare. I'd catch a bus, a tram, two trains and walk 20 min to a beach just to get away from the tourists.
Right? Now multiply that 10 times. Things have worsened the last three years. There's not even a "high season" anymore: it's the same all year round. I'm from Rome, and I loved walking around the city centre and sometimes going to St. Peter or the Pantheon, but now it's just impossible: there are huge queues at any hour and in any month. You can't take a stroll along Via del Corso as it is custom for Romans Saturday afternoon, you can't enjoy the beautiful sights or the art because of the crowds. I feel defrauded of my own city.
Good for Italy especially Venice, I have been there 3 times off season and it is always crowded and those giant cruise ships bring in too many people who do not spend much money there. They crowd up St Marks Square and this ban was a long time coming
Bella figura, Bella figura 😂. The Italian philosophy that everything should be attractive. Absolutely! Only the Italians would ban flip flops and I support them 💯!
The point of the flip flops is tourists wear them to go on hikes, so when they get stuck, they call the rescue services, you can imagine the waste of time and money for everyone!!! For once is not about fashion!
Crocs, flip flops in Italy is just ugly. And Venice is unbearable with day trippers dragging luggage through the streets. While these measures should help people who do sensible things, it will dry up revenues.
Same thing up here in northern Wisconsin. Too many tourists who think they can do anything they want. The most mean and rude people that come up here are from Illinois and Minnesota. Please go spend your money someplace else.
@@YvonneCreanI think it’s because a lot of them are just kind of clueless when they go abroad. The same can be said of many Americans, but more of them have been outside their country. That said, I remember Italians could be grating in Istanbul - for example Turks tend to speak quietly on public transit or in cafes, but you can always tell when a group of Italians come in. 😅 They’ll without a doubt be the loudest ones there. Except for maybe the Chinese group. 🙃 But the Italians are also usually very polite and classy as well.
For me it was Koreans in the Vatican. Despite signs all over in EVERY language I could recognize (And several more that I would not) that asked for SILENCE in the Vatican, many Asians were jabbering away loudly.
I live downtown in a European capital. The whole neighbourhood has turned into airbnb apartments. Local renters are gone, businesses have gone out of business and now there are more tourists at the supermarket queue than locals. Tourists in flip flops or those hideous cork shoes (yeah, I know, they are comfortable but still HIDEOUS) who only shop for grilled cheese. This type of tourism does not support the local economy, only the person renting the airbnb apartment. If I never heard another suitcase roll in front of my building I would be happy. Tourism used to be a luxury. Tickets were expensive, lodging was expensive and I think we should go back to that time.

As someone who is hoping to visit Italy in the future, I see these new “boundaries” as a way to make a visit more safe and enjoyable for all. I’ve been to places were unruly tourist have ruined to experience!
My pre paid guide and gondola boatman were rude when I visited 10 yrs back.. I feel they had no respect for the tourists even back then. What's the point of a beautiful country if the ppl are rude?
I agree with that I visited with friends in Milan and took a train to visit other cities. I stayed in Air Bnbs that should have been family apartments. I didn’t visit Venice since it seems like a lovely tourist trap. I’d have loved to go there when it was during Covid. Tourists are too loud .
I have never even been to Italy and I’m European. I’m not much for traveling as a tourist. I’ve had enough of traveling for work. So I never got the tourist craze and why people always have to be on a plane somewhere. It’s odd to me. Good for Italy for imposing boundaries. The world is overpopulated and a lot of people can be very ill mannered and lacking in common sense. They are all traveling tho, and all going to the same places, that has to cause disruption and chaos. Honestly why can’t people just stay put for a minute tho!? What’s with the traveling abroad craze!? What’s wrong with your own countries!? Back in the day most middle class people were happy to do it once every couple of years, as a real event, it’s become beyond excessive in the latest years. What are y’all running from or towards? Another holiday abroad won’t solve your problems. Stay the heck home for a minute will ya, calm your titties, give the instagram travel feed a rest.
I have ridden bike races in Italy, and I love it. The people are so lovely and support us 'foreign' riders. I hope they can sort out the tourist problem. Also, I drove an old Double Decker bus around the iconic cities of Italy on a campaign against cancer. (Contro il Cancro) I loved every minute.
This is interesting and even cutting edge if pulled off correctly! An opportunity to redefine the values one wishes to celebrate. What's intriguing is that this brings about the importance of energy and the field it produces. It's not about being against tourism, some tourists can be disruptive to the ecosystem that a space is known for. Simple example is a place of worship. One strives for Nobility, as they should.

I'm in agreement. Just got back from Italy. And the main popular cities and attractions are a SS of tourists (like me) only I'm in and out. I don't loiter. I didn't sit on the Spanish steps (others did... plenty others- no tickets given). Rome was a SS. Forget Naples. Disgusting. Bari? Meh. Amalfi? Waaaay over hyped and insta over saturated photos. 2hrs that's all you'll need. Trust. Stick to small unheard of towns. I did. And it was way better imho. Anyway.. look, Italy is, if I'm being honest, overrated. Big time. After you see one cute small town with narrow alleys you've seen them all. Pizza? Everywhere. Gelato? Ya it was good. Worth the $2000 air fare + $2200 accommodations? I could do without. Look im not saying don't go. Go. But let's stop with the hype. Even the Italians are saying relax and stay away. Which is saying something.
Keep yakkkin' Italy's been a top tourist attraction for centuries, not just lately like most destinations. Books, poems written about it by the hundreds and the vast majority return.

I just got back last week from a 10-day visit in Italy. It was marvelous. Their railway system is the best. I didn't get the impression that they were tired of tourists. On the contrary, it provides an important livelihood for many of them. They just need to manage the crowds better, especially during the peak seasons. Italians Need the tourists. Especially the South where unemployment is high. Italians from the South, come to find work in western Europe, so the country could still do with income-bringing tourists 😂. Anyway, I can't wait to visit Italy again. Viva Italia ❤ 🇮🇹 🎉
at least in Italy they deal overtourism with civility and acknowledge the importance of tourists unlike in Spain where tourists were being sprayed with water
Italy is a beautiful country and the people are very nice, specially in the south, however in Rome, locals and businesses are becoming very hostile towards tourists and are treating them like garbage, they don't care, they'll keep getting millions of tourists every year anyway, I wouldn't go to Rome ever again is a chaos, however Napoli and the south of Italy has my heart, beautiful nice people and very helpful.

Italian economy is based on industry, tourism represent just 5% of gdp and most tourists are actually Italians themselves. Then tourism is a low level investment you cannot make a lot of money considering all the people needed to work there. A factory is far better because it requires less and less humans and the income is way higher per capita. Do you think Italians aim to be waiters and cleaners for tourists? I work in an areospace company in Italy we make more money than 10 cities full of tourists with 1/100 of the employees.
They will cry after a couple of years saying 'too less' tourists. Think of the citizens losing their livelihood because of this, and all these people are normal people like you and me, no one cares about them, politicians just wanting to grab the headlines, sad.
Italy will never have the problem of too few tourists. Every city, town and village in Italy has some touristic interest, so there will always be visitors, regardless of any new rules.

@@Andizu1 it's the same, maybe worse

They’re not “breaking up” with tourists, they’re just trying to maintain order and ensuring the fair access of locals to their own communities. If only Mexico could pay attention to this and do something with gentrification and the privatization of our own patrimony…
They do they drain the U.S.
the flip flops is because of the hiking.... it's not safe! many tourists take some types of excursions lightly.
Whatever Italy is charging them they should add a 50% idiot tax on top of it. Who TF goes on a mountain hiking trip with flip flops?

About bloody time. i spent a month in Italy about 5 years ago, mostly in & around Prato & popped into Florence a couple times of & there were way too many tourists & I thought this must piss off the locals no end. Also noticed locals wear sandals, not flips flops. Only saw East Asians, Indians, Africans & Australians wearing flip flops there.
We are missing etiquette and class, elegance. I remember those days from parents wnd grandparents.
Yes, so true. Very sad.
Yes. Contemporary casual clothing lacks class and elegance, per se. And most tourists act like they came from the boondocks (mountains)! Whenever I visited Old World cities, I always brought with me a White Tie ensemble, silk socks and Opera Pumps shoes, just because...
I fully agree with Italy it’s should be implemented. It’s good for the tourist is good for the country. Bravo Italia.
Bravo Italy 🇮🇹

Thank goodness, been there done that already. Didn’t even bathe in the Trevi fountain. Be a good tourist or stay home. 😊
While these measures should help people who do sensible things, it
will dry up revenues.
Hurrah. People sitting on the Spanish Steps are really annoting. Likewise selfies.

Same thing up here in northern Wisconsin. Too many tourists who think they can do anything they want. The most mean and rude people that come up here are from Illinois and Minnesota. Please go spend your money someplace else.
