We use literally tons of CaCl2 in the oil and gas industry to kill the well if we need to hold a slight high pressure well down while it is serviced this is called hydrostatic pressure (use of fluid in a confined space exerting it's own weight and pressure). We mix it with regular fresh water and is considered to be in the "clear brine" family of fluids used in the oilfields. It is the second most used brine fluid/kill fluid (temporarily kills the well) only second to NaCl (sodium chloride). Fun fact sodium chloride can only weigh 10lbs per gallon no matter what you do. Once it is saturated to 10 pounds the rest won't dissolve and will literally fall out. So if we have a well that needs a little more than a 10 pound brine we will mix it with CaCl2 which stand alone is 11.6 lbs per gallon. So many times we use a blend of NaCl/CaCl2 to achieve say a 10.6 lbs per gallon mix. I love chemistry sorry for the long post.

Toxic as hell and I can't believe that it's in food and water. Very hard to get rid of too.
