Korg Volca FM and Tascam DP 006 Sync

  • I recently got a Tascam DP-006 digital four track recorder. This is my attempt to use it as a sync source for a Korg Volca FM. The same basic technique could be used with other hardware. This is my first attempt at a video tutorial; please forgive my cinematography and editing!
Same technique should work with Tascam DP-004 and DP-008; the general idea applies to any multi-track recorder.

Fantastic, I have the dp006 and wondered if this would work. Thanks for demonstrating the exact setup required, I will certainly give this a go!

@@makespacemakespace one small tweak I made was to put a mono to dual mono splitter on the end of the right channel leading to the speakers (in your setup). This allows me to monitor with headphones and hear the sound in both ears. Other than that it works great. For anyone reading this comment I advise looking on ebay for the stereo to dual mono splitter, keywords did not bring up the correct result for me on other sites.
Personally I like this setup very much as sacrificing one track on the recorder actually solves a lot of other problems I had keeping things in time. I can definitely say this is a good solution! 😁

I was thinking of something similar for my DP-008, thanks for this video showing that the method works great!

    Very interesting application. Thank you.
Shouldn't this work basically with every synth or drummachine with CV clock/sync in and out? As far as I understood it is just a simple CV signal.

There is a trick with Volcas (and others) whereby you insert a disconnected cable into the Volca at the head of the sync chain, press "play" on all machines (Volcas, Monologues, anything with a sync in probably). Nothing starts until you pull out the patch cable from the machine at the head of the chain - then they all start at once. It occurs to me that this could be used here as well - all machines ready to play, but nothing starts until the click track starts. Has anyone tried it that way? I think it's like traditional tape sync on cassette portastudios.

It see,s to work - the click track acts as a transport signal, so the sequencer is paused until it starts.

hey! seems pretty useful.. do you think this would work with pocket operators? 🤔

The same basic process should work; though I've found that the POs are a little more sensitive to sync input signal level than the Volcas. You may need to tweak the output level to get it to work.

@@makespacemakespace great! thanks for replying :) - btw I can't decide yet about getting the zoom h1n or this dp006 for recording jams or beats from the PO (plus more devices eventually) ; both seems to be pretty handy

@@dropedrin i have the zoom h1 (not 'n') also. For my purposes the devices are basically interchangable because the zoom h1 can record stereo - or two mono tracks with the correct splitter cable - and the tascam can also only record two mono tracks at once. Neither device can record more than 2 mono tracks simultaneously, which was a disappointment when I realized that the tascam wasn't really a digital version of my old four-track tape recorder. The tascam does have a lot more features for mixing and mastering than the zoom, and depending on your workflow could be used to "produce" basic tracks, but for live recording you're stuck with the two mono inputs. But it all depends what you're trying to do, and both of these work great for live recording a single stereo or two mono tracks.

@@makespacemakespace thanks for taking the time and shared your experience! :) so I think maybe a portable mixer could be a good upgrade in the case of recording more than one device at time on a voice recorder..

@@makespacemakespace If you run the sync signal through a Bastl KLIK you could probably get it things to work more tightly
