      I just bought one, I love it.
      Was using casette tapes before this thing.
      I don't like computers, Idk why. It sucks the fun out of modular for me.

      Dittto ! @%* I used to record on 8 track analogue - but with 2 inch tape, recording engineer, sometimes producer or manager, assorted musicians, friends, fans. Hahah... what magic moments they were, too !
      Anywhoo, I just scored one of these 008 sweethearts and yaaah... she definitely has that feel to 'er, alright ! Takes yah right back there ~ "Tapes rolling... take 1" ;))

    I've looked at a number of instructional videos for this unit but this is the first that has given me the desire to start recording. I'm 73 years old (and I do mean old!) and have been really discouraged. Thanks so much for your thorough presentation and kind manner. Greetings from Appalachian KY!

    I bought one of these a few months back for noodling around with, tried to make head or tail of it and I suddenly understood how my parents felt when it came to programming a VCR back in the day.
    Really helpful series of videos and much appreciated. 👍

    I love mine! With the Bluebox and plenty of cables, you’ve got pretty nice recording rig! You just need an interface which I have 3 or 4 products that will be an interface if I need one. None of them bought for that purpose! The best part I was able to purchase mine brand new for I believe $145 on ZZounds’s outlet! Just what a great deal! It’s a fantastic portable for sampling, again just like the Bluebox it requires the right splitter cables, and neither are an interface but could be with a firmware update!

    The best most intuitive explanation of any of the multitrack recorders I have come by. My 13 year old daughter is looking for something like this so that she can put down some piano and guitar and accompany it live with vocals. This Tascam DP-008EX seems like the perfect option. Thanks again!

    If you're having issues with getting an external microphone to work, through XLR input A or B, it's because the type of microphone connected (condenser mics) needs an additional setting turned on to recognize and record audio. Just press the phantom button and press on.

    Thanks for the video. It was simple to understand. I have a few recording devices and I really like this Tascam dp-008ex which I use for quickly coming up with things always ready with mic on amp. I love how it is compact and doesn't get in the way of anything. The things I come up with I transfer later to other devices but the Tascam is a good work flow at the beginning for me. There's many ways to use it but this is how it works for me. I like that hands on-ness of it and don't like stuff like pro tools using a mouse, just not tactile enough for me. All my equipment is hardware not software. Anyway, thanks again for staying direct and on point.

    Hi there I found your description really good. I am completely blind and I am considering buying this device. Listening very carefully to your description I think it would be possible for me to use enough functions to record and mix. I really liked that the source menu did not rap between internal mike low and high etc so if I knew when I got to the top I could count the clicks. Some things would be impossible like seeing if I was clipping I would tend to verge on the side of caution here and put the input to low. Also source routing to the different tracks so input 1 to track 1 3 5 etc and that is fine if I do not change it. I do think this recorder with time learning menus etc could work. Thank you very very much for your excellent demonstration Joe

    • @StudioonaStick

      Sure you could. If you have someone there to describe the mapping of the controls I'm sure you could get it done. Or else let me know if I can put a piece together to help the process along. I could call out the controls left to right, top to bottom for you.

      @@StudioonaStick Wow thats a good playlist, thanks for that and for responding! Maybe I’ll bump up to the 006 or 008 someday.. Question; I sing and play the guitar and have not yet figured out to record a song I’m doing that we plan on attaching to a TH-cam video whether is better recording quality to use the internal mics or the inputs for guitar and microphone (which I haven’t understood how to do both at the same time- guitar and microphone with the inputs)… Or is it best to record guitar only then add the vocals on another track? Things are still a bit fuzzy for me sorry.. I lost the instruction manual and know it’s available online, but visuals like your informative videos are easier to follow..

    • @StudioonaStick
      @StudioonaStick  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rodneypayne5124 Thanks.
      You can do whatever works best for you.
      If you sing and play well at the same time it's easy, just assign and arm the two tracks and do it at once. Or do one at a time.
      As far as quality, the internal mics can be really good for an acoustic guitar, or you can mic it. You'll have to judge for yourself which you like better.

    Joe, I'm a musician and as writer, not a techie. I thought the Tascam would be a stand-alone solution to recording. The TRUTH is that without a computer, it is a lump of plastic, a $300 doorstop. It will not help you create anything. This is a fact that I don't see in any Tascam marketing, or in the manual. YOU have shown this, and thank you, but where do the Tascam people show their machine connected to a Mac or a PC? And where in the Tascam manual do they EXPLAIN how the Tascam interacts with the computer? They don't--and I think this is why, from many You Tube comments, you can see that many, many people have no idea how to use the machine--and toss it in the closet.
    A recorder is to CREATE things. It is used by creative people. The Tascam may be an electric engineer's idea of heaven, but it is a bitch for almost anyone else.
    So, Joe, could you make more videos showing how to use the Tascam in the creative process. How to lay down some initial tracks, how to label and save them, then how to make some changes in them, and save and label those, and so forth. You have done a nice job in explaining how to reverse engineer a master back to an earlier state, for instance. And how to export songs more simply, without mix down or mastering. But I think a full video taken from this point of view would be great. It might get thousands of Tascams out of the closets. And if you have any talks with the Tascam people, ask them to put down their slide rules and surge meters and make machines and instruction manuals that speak to their customers--people who make music.

    • @StudioonaStick
      @StudioonaStick  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the comment Erik,
      I plan to exactly what you just described. We are in the process of setting up a studio to facilitate the process. Don't really need one to do so, but it makes the process go smoother if you have a nice layout and you're not constantly moving, plugging, unplugging gear all the time.
      Pretty well along the way in the process and I'm about to post a video on how we constructed our bass traps.
      Hopefully we can inspire.

    These little tascams are workhorses. We just recorded our album using one of these. @MNDTRVLRMUSIC Used the built-in mics for the drums in stereo and then tracked the guitars, bass, vocals separately. It is definitely possible to get a decent sounding demo or album with just this and maybe some mastering after for that final touch. Highly recommended 👌

    So, I borrowed one of these from a friend, and as far as I can tell, unless you get complicated and use the "bounce" function over and over, this is actually a 2 track recorder because it records on odd and even numbers whether you want to or not. Say, drums on track 1, guitar on track 2. Try to record vocals on track 3, and it records those vocals into your drums on track 1. Am I missing something?

    HELP! I have a mastered song complete and I have tried taking it from the recorder to a computer with various different USB cables due to I don't have the original cable that came with the recorder and it will not work nothing pops up using Windows 10 on the computer at all and nothing pops up on a bigger better more expensive up-to-date computer as well. I cannot figure this out I just want to share this song but I cannot do that until it gets off that recorder. any thoughts or is there a certain cable that will only work with this recorder that came with it that I just don't have?

    • @StudioonaStick
      @StudioonaStick  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have had that problem and mentioned it in a video. The cable has to be data capable.
      Failing that, just turn off the Tascam, take the card out and put it in a reader attached to the computer.
      (Edit, most computers have an sd slot built in.)

    • @StudioonaStick

      Almost certainly, you would most likely just use 1/4" instrument cables, most drum machines have 1/4" line out jacks.
      Then you would plug into the Tascam's 1/4" inputs, get your gain set and record to 2 channels.
      Of course If you like you could just record to 1 channel.

      The EX has
      Input effects (EQ, Compression, De-essing and Exciter) that you can apply to tracks as you record them.
      Mastering effects, same effects that you can apply after recording and mixdown.
      Stereo WAV Import so you can bring in pre-recorded stereo tracks.

    I wanted to ask you a question. I can't hear my recording on my head phones. I can hear the preloaded recording song though. BUT, anything I recorded I can't hear. I'm old 66 so technology is not my friend. What can I connect this machine to to hear externally the recording so I can play along with it to get the next track TIGHT?!
    I don't have fancy equipment monitors etc. I have a unit I used to connect to my Android phone via 1/8th inch imput that has a amp volume and tone controls that I used to listen to TH-cam music videos to so I could play along with songs. Can this be plugged into the phones jack and I could listen that way?
    If you could help with some advice I would be very grateful!
    Thanks Ray

      2 at a time is the max.
      I would recommend a usb mixer for a beginner.
      Even a Behringer or Mackie would do nicely.
      Just make sure you get enough xlr inputs (4 would be what you would typically find available) and that it has usb out.
      Then just plug it in anything, even your phone, open a recorder and mix it all up and export.
      Any other questions, ask away.

    I have gotten pretty familiar with the interface by now, my problem is getting the levels right. I am plugging in an acoustic with pickup directly in. Between the TRIM on input A/B level on the device, the volume on the track, then the guitar, then the MASTER volume, it is always off. It's always clipping, but when I lower the input volume, then I can barely hear it. The Master volume seems useless, even at max I can barely hear it. Is there a tutorial on getting the levels just right?

    • @StudioonaStick
      @StudioonaStick  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Things I can think of...
      Make sure that the cable you are using is the correct one.
      Make sure that the track that you are using has the correct letter assigned to it, A or B, and that Input Setting is set to External Input/ Line/ Low.
      If that doesn't solve it, see if you can plug the amp into something else like a powered speaker, mixer or stereo and check if it will work through something else.

      Try switching the switch on the back between Mic/Line and Guitar, if you already haven't.

    • @StudioonaStick
      @StudioonaStick  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One other thought, the Line 6 output may be stereo, if so, using a single mono cable out could negate the signal.My Boss Katana is like that, so to record with it, I use an 1/8" stereo to two mono 1/4" splitter and use one or both external inputs on the Tascam. Or I plug the two mono jacks into a splitter that combines the 2 channels back into a single mono 1/4".

      Two possible options.

      Plug the line out of the Trio into a line in of the Tascam,
      arm that track and start recording on the Tascam,
      play the Trio loop/sequence live into the Tascam.
      Second option.
      Record the loop/sequence to the Trio sd card.
      Convert the file to 16 bit 44khz with an app or program (there are even online options)
      import file to the Tascam.
