Dude, I really like how you're being real as fuck about explaining how terrible homelessness is and the dangers of being amongst that marginalized population. The reason I say you're real af is because you literally look into the social issue itself and interpret it for what it is, circumstances causing both good and bad people suffering, no biases. Keep up the good work.

You know the saddest thing is that the PM is giving illegals that come over from the USA Motel rooms and stuff while Canadians sleep on the fucking streets that is what really gets me angry I know people that are homeless because welfare is not enough to pay for a place to live and the prices of reguler apartments are going up because the Government is bringing others over from other countries and on top of that are giving them first dibs on affordable housing. I have no issue on new people coming over but we need to fix the issues we have here in our Country before we start bringing other Countries problems here.

It's so heart warming to see people being human, giving time and a genuinely open ear to humans, no matter where they're at in their journey.
I've been living in Toronto for the past 5 years, working at Starbucks a good most of that time near yonge/bloor. We worked very close with the homeless and less fortunate peoples. So many lovely souls who've just slipped through the cracks or had tragedies shake their world. It infuriates me to see other patrons or people of the city continue to hold prejudices against these peoples without taking the time to connect, listen and learn from them. So thank you thank you THANK YOU for sharing this and being a genuine listener ❤

The problems lie way deeper than just the need for a job, a lot of people that are homeless won't be able to hold a job at least currently due to drug use, mental health issues, and other issues that come with living on the street. Canada needs to do so much more to make sure people can get off and stay off the streets, nobody should have to suffer.

I've lived and worked downtown for years and I would always run into the same few homeless guys. Some had addiction issues, mental health problems while others just had bad luck. I made a point talking to a couple of "regulars" I would see, sometimes buy them a coffee and a sandwich. I couldn't afford it all the time. They just appreciated having someone not ignoring them and taking the time to speak with them. Being homeless can be a lonely island in a city full of people.

They are still human beings with basic human needs. You wonder why the cities can't just build some tiny homes for people to rent cheap, nothing fancy. In my city they have a bunch of motels going down the drain because of covid, its like why can't they have short term rentals for cheap. Some money is better then no money. Any way. I use the word houseless because for a lot of them that is their home, they have family, they have a community, he’s even the mayor ! My brother was houseless for years due to mental illness and he is quite like Jeremy just a very caring loving soul. Jeremy takes care of his community more than anyone I know to be honest. People can learn so much from him. Golden heart. We need to be friendly with the houseless people. Everyone needs love and smiles and warmth. After that, a bunch of us gathered around the fire, and we talked until we were eventually asked to leave by the management who wanted to go home. We all went away feeling happy with a deep sense of satisfaction from the experience. We even crossed this exact bridge to get home that evening.

This community is different, and if you saw the average person living in this park on the street you would never think that they lived there. I love this video and appreciate you sharing this man's story. I go to the park regularly and live in the neighbourhood. I have also worked in the shelter system and completely understand why people would not want to go to a shelter. The system is broken and people who experience poverty, substance use, and addictions have very little supports. Maybe if the government focused on providing more frontline help, real therapy ongoing support, not pushing down pills into people but trauma informed therapy, and real housing solutions something would change. Unfortunately we have government and hospital systems where there are so many CEO's and high end senior management paid hundreds of thousands of dollars and very little being done for those in need. I work in the system and am ashamed.

I was homeless in that area from 2001 onwards for a few years. Honestly very little has changed about the area. Why the locals ignore it. It's just part of the area.
Once you are in the shelter system you slowly become warehoused and this goes on for years. If you were not mentally ill prior to entry, you will definitely get a form of it by the end of it. Yes, people keep donating over and over. Which helps in the short term but creates long term dependency. You can keep giving a man a fish a day or you can teach him to fish so he can fend for himself.
Without adequate mental health facilities to house the mentally ill and drug rehabilitation centers this will continue on ad nauseam.
Now not all shelters are horrible but don't expect great resources as they would leave you to believe. It's not as easy to "just get a job" and it all goes away.
The reality is no one will give you work when you are this far down.
Some workers do care to help but the rest are just earning a paycheck and burnt out.
That being said, if you want help, you have to fight very hard to get it.
Took me a few years myself, to access proper mental health care and addictions counseling.
I fought hard to regain my life back and get the fcuk out of this endless cycle of the welfare system. Got a part time job, some schooling and kept going.
Today I have been fully employed for 9 years, have my own place and thankful to be out of that system.
Most of these folks at heart are the nicest people you could meet. It is the addiction behaviour that's ugly, not the soul within.
I hope Jeremy finds his way out of his personal situation because that area will take your life eventually. I avoid that area now, too many memories of lost lives. Most of the people I was homeless with at Queen & Bathurst feel the same about this zone of death.

The drive is irrelevant, internet exists and many have discovered that it doesn't make sense to have large offices full of people when you'll have happier employees working where they want online. Why would I spend 3-4 million on a 2000 sqft house downtown when I can have a 5 acre plus lakefront property with a new build for the same money? No neighbors, no traffic, no rat race, friendlier/happier people surrounding you, less stress etc etc etc. Cities are going to turn into the cheap options, mostly for factories and labor jobs. Here I am tucked up in my comfy bed in Wales GB...... Enjoying the walk in another country but being homeless in 2021 is probably the worst injustice to our human family, prisoners get a bed , food and a roof over their head. Illegals get help. So so sad but around the world they are not forgotten.💓

Jeremy was also arrested for "dangerous weapons" or something too, according to a police report. Shame.

Thank you for doing this, Chris. Living across the street from the park, I am very conscious that “there, but for the grace of God [and a lifetime of good luck] go I.”

I grew up and still live in the area.
Thanks for putting a face and story to some of these people. I think that those who have problems with this situation forget that these are human beings, our brothers and sisters, and I find it sad that people think about the aesthetic "blemish" rather than think of the well-being of these people.

One of my favourite comments yet and I would agree with you. These are all human beings and their lives should be very important to us, no matter their current situation.

No government or person has the right to tell people they can't work. People need to work, to make money, to put food on the table and keep a roof over their head. Shutting down business, stopping people from working is the biggest criminal action imagineable, worsening all pre-existing social problems already out of control. Order out of chaos, I guess??? It's going to get worse before it gets better, but have to face darkness before you can see the light. This is not a pretty subject, but you present it so well Mr. Chris and inspire people to take citizen action. Just throw money at a problem to solve it, doesn' work. The problems people face are more complicated, people need purpose and they need work a career and skills, something to be good at in life. The deepest feelings this young man you interviewed expressed was basic connection with other people, looking after each other, being a leader in his community, protecting the weak and vulnerable and making his environment a better place. This is the natural way for a young man, something is so wrong in a place where orders from the top prevent people from actualizing and being all they can be. It's everyone facing the same issues, not just homeless who are the most visible. You said it well Chris, it doesn't matter how much money is in your bank account, this is about real life and having the right to enjoy life as a human being
