I’ve lived in this area my entire life. I’m about 2 miles away from Purgatory. I come here often and to this day it never gets old. This video clip does great justice for this park. Very well done and hits on most of the chasm and surrounding pathway’s natural beauty.
Great vid! Growing up in Central Mass., Purgator Chasm was a staple as a kid. If it's not already on your radar, I highly recommend the hike around Becket Quarry in Becket, Mass out near the Berkshires. The quarry area itself is really something as it's littered with abandoned buildings, cars, and infrastructure. There's also a nice little hike on the side of the (very) small mountain the quarry is cut into. Not to mention there's a few places on the trail that offer a nice scramble for some cool views of the quarry itself and one that offers a great view out across the valley.

I was born and raised in Northbridge. For Fat Man's Misery, I normally start at the opposite side and exit at the "cliff" side. When you do it that way, if you look to your bottom right, you can crawl out through a narrower part...if you're not too big lol. And Lover's Leap I was always told was the highest part of the Chasm, but it maybe marked underneath.
OOO very interesting. The next time I visit I'll have to go through the fat man's squeeze the opposite way like you described. Thanks for some great suggestions!
Beautiful and I LOVE SCRAMBLING! Have you been to The Gunks in New Paltz, NY? Tons of great scrambles... That's where I live. Also, scrambling game changer.. I discovered about 12 years ago, 5 - 10 (brand) Ascent/Guide shoes. Unbelievably comfy for everyday use and great grip when scrambling/light climbing. Adventure safely!!!

Imagine doing that as a winter hike with munchkin Royal Rangers. There doesn't seem like a lot of moisture, but imagine a winter's worth of ice covering every boulder in 6" of treacherous ice!!!
Grew up near here. Went there times beyond counting.Tales of Frisbee in the Chasm are the stuff of legends. And a place to have lobster. You must have been there early in the day, Maybe a weekday. There is no one else there. Yah, I remember water flowing from the rocks. And being able to fit in the crevice.I'm glad to see there is still some moss on the upper deck. Oh, this is quite like much of Worcester County. There's so much granite just laying around they built sheep walls with it. Wilder sections of the Midstate Trail are beautiful. Be careful anytime you are walking on a road. There are shadows of trails left in Oxford above Hodges Village Dam that are not marked on the trail maps. (USACE administration) that can be followed to nice places to fish, rocks, remains of a 30 year old bridge, water flowing from the rock.
The exact date is in the description but I imagine I picked a weekday and went in the morning to make sure I got that feeling of being there alone. Glad the video was able to bring you such nice memories.
@@AdamHoyt In the deepest part of the chasm 4 of us started throwing a frisbee around. You ask someone you don't know for a "little help" to throw it to you, next thing there was 10 frisbees in the air, about 40 people playing and another hundred cheering...when the ranger arrived. The poor guy just about swallowed his whistle. There were no arrests, no injuries, but a bunch of strangers became legendary. Hey, find access to the hill behind Clara Barton School in Oxford. Try going up Prospect Hill Road off Old Depot Road. There are still hints of trails to Big Rock, Giant Rock, The Spring, Split Rock, The Water Tower, and the East Side Stone Wall Trail up to the Power Lines Trail. Some of these may be pretty clear, have dirt bike ruts, but some of them haven't been walked regularly since 1980's. Big Rock, a glacial erratic estimated at 10 tens, Giant rock is bigger, split rock smaller. Last I saw the spring was 1997, still flowing.

Nice review! I'm a fan of rocky trails like Monadnock so this looks like it could be a good, shorter option. I've been there for the picnic area (which is very nice for an outdoor party) but didn't explore much of the trail.
Yes it's only .25 of a mile in the scramble portion. A much shorter drive and hike compared to Monadnock Plus you can still easily have your picnic afterwards!
Rock climbers call the Lovers Leap section, The Hour Glass. I heard that they stopped all (roped) rock climbing in the chasm. There is also a Purgatory Chasm in Newport, RI.
That's interesting. I know I haven't seen any roped climbers there myself. And i know several cavers like the chasm as well. I'll have to check out this other chasm sometime!
This trail is awesome and I love the quantity and quality of the information you provide. That’s a lot of work to put together! I hope to move to the Boston area this Spring from DC and will definitely check out Purgatory Chasm. I plan to hike the Billy Goat Trail of Great Falls MD this weekend to make sure I’m in good enough shape!
Glad you enjoy it! I think you'll love it. And luckily though I would not say you have to be in any shape at all to hike this trail. Just have to glow slow and steady it is rather short. That's what makes it fun for the whole family!
hahahaha You may not realize this but this was the very first video I ever made. I literally did not own them yet. hahaha I was still honing the look. The Back pack is different too!

But I do plan to do a few this winter, and maybe some less snowy more exotic parts of the USA outside of the Northeast.

It was a tie of that being one of the best parts or the climb into the Devil's Coffin.
That formation has always been known as “Fat Man’s Misery”. I alway get nervous with younger kids being so close to the beginning part of it.
