My solo day hike to Galehead Mountain and South Twin Mountain via the third steepest mile on the Appalachian trail located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Both Galehead Mountain and South Twin Mountain count for the New Hampshire 48 4000 Footer (NH48) hiking list. The New Hampshire 48 4000 Footer list, created by the Appalachian Mountain Club, consists of 48 mountains in New Hampshire with elevations of at least 4,000 feet and a minimum of 200 feet prominence. This video is part of my series where I attempt to find the best day hikes in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. Did I find the best day hike in New Hampshire? One of the top day hikes in New Hampshire at least! Specifically, Galehead Mountain and South Twin Mountain are located near Twin Mountain, NH in the White Mountain National Forest.

across the street from the cannon mountain rv park parking lot. but with the crazy traffic coming for peak foliage i'm not sure they will let you park there. don't worry literally every person will be walking along the road to hike that .5 mile trail single file to the ledge haha. you'll know where it is. or ask the cop directing traffic haha

Wow! Thank you Adam, great video! I watched because I am thinking of hiking this trail but now not so sure. In your opinion on a scale of 1 - 10, how scary was that rock face section that you had the footage from afar? It looks like you are rock climbing a cliff!

Hi Adam. Thanks for another fun and scenic hike. I liked the way you reacted whtn you got to the top of Galehead! Very funny (and appropriate). Sure enjoyed the views from South Twin. Question: What is the name of the music you used at timepoint th-cam.com/video/GEDS3NJcp_A/w-d-xo.html? I've always liked that but don't know its name/performer. Look forward to your next adventure. I've done this! I remember ladder #4 because when you are wearing a full size overnight pack, you need to lean to the left so you don't get stuck under the cliff. I don't remember the rock scramble after it, but this was like 30 years ago and I probably didn't care!

I just hiked wheeler peak in New Mexico today my very first major hike and I can tell you that I learned really quickly at least by the time I got within 1500 feet from the summit that it kicked my ass royally. I definitely need to lose some weight and figure out how to pack things correctly. I had too much in my backpack.

Bout to go do this one this coming week. Along with some of the Carter's. Started the 48 last month with Lincoln Lafayette to celebrate getting sober, and now this will be my first of the 25 after turning around last month on ice gulch. I gotta ask though, why do you wear lighter footwear instead of something waterproof like heavier boots?

You don't have to walk the bike path for long if you park at the Basin and walk in that way. There's a cutoff about .3 in from the Basin parking lot that takes you to LST and on to the Flume trail

The Cataracts and Dunn Falls should be considered one hike. They are only two miles apart. Other honorable mentions are Devil's Den near Andover and Cascade Stream Gorge in Sandy River Plantation. Also, the hike in to Angel Falls is much longer than when you filmed it. The Bemis Road suffered major washouts in December 2023 and is closed to all traffic.

Ahh, you had the perfect day out there! 😍 Certainly a contender for one of the most scenic but I still give that award to Chocorua via Carter atm. Once you get to Carter ledge and up it's just otherworldly, I was in absolute awe of it. So far my favorite in the Whites rivaled only by Moosilauke via Beaver Brook (cause of the waterfalls haha). Of course Franconia Ridge is in there too!

Yeah, for trekking poles! Never knew this was the 3rd steepest on the AT. I did this last year with 2 nights at Galehead Hut and included North Twin (nice outlook there too, not it’s summit). That was a more humane way to knock off 3 NH48 summits. Downside of that was you have to go up and down from Galehead Hut to South Twin.

I went thru Navy SERE training as a U.S. Force Recon Marine in the White Mountains of Vermont/New Hampshire in Oct. 27th thru Jan. 7th 1975/1976. I still remember one of our instructors telling us the White Mountains will make you dead PDQ in any season, but especially winter if you aren't focused and smart and determined to stay alive.

I hiked Mt. Adams quite a few times back in the late 70's through the 80's. It was the starting point for every hike in the White Mountains. Crag Camp and Gray Knob were the best places to rest, at a dollar or two a night you couldn't go wrong. We were a group of 12 backpackers and hiked throughout the region. Great times. I always had a walking stick, handy for stopping a slip.
