I am 68 and have been training in martial arts since my mid-teens. Stiff hips have always been a problem for me but these exercises have already improved my hip flexibility. Thanks from the UK gents!
Wow, this is amazing. I had problems with a high kick, even despite my good stretch I could not do a high side kick. After 5 minutes of this stretching I kick much higher than after years of training. Wow wow wow Bless you ... I'm going to kick somebody right now
I suffer pain when lifting the leg to the side, whether right or left, the pain is at the fixed pelvic joint, but when lifting in front, there is no pain. Will this exercise help me get rid of the pain? Thank you
I did all of your stuff for 30years and now at 66 am having bone troubles. I left the gym 3 years ago. The point is: you have to keep at it regardless of life!!!
I'm 71---it was back in 67' that I became interested in Gung Fu. I've always enjoyed the hand and arm techniques of Wing Chun. But having quick feet was always especially enjoyable. My legs are still very fast, despite my age. These stretches are great---painful, but great! Of course I take them slowly. But I have never stopped stretching since the late 60's, so these stretches weren't TOO un- comfortable. Thanx, guys.
@@AverageGabriel Incorrect. Kung fu and gung fu are just different ways of romanizing the same words 功夫. In Hanyu Pinyin, which is the official romanization system for Standard Mandarin Chinese, it is stylized gōngfu.
Thanks guys. As a martial artist for nearly 40years, I laid off training for a couple of years and found my I found my left hip just locked up. At age 57 these will help a great deal. Thanks.
I’ve tried these stretches four times over the last week and found a distinct improvement in the hip capsule. As my adductors have always been tight, this prevented a lot of movement. I found using yoga blocks helped with stability. Also so working to doodle like Brad.
Man! I don't know how you guys manage daily posts -- on subjects I need but never thought to ask about! I've been trying to kick up my heels for decades!
I took a few years off and somehow I can’t kick (sideways) above my own waistline. I never noticed the flexibility actually go away and now it’s painful to even try. Glad I found this, I’ll start working on it asap.
I suffer from an injury in my leg for almost 2 years where the joint clicks and feels painful when i did my exercise, but when i found the videos of this guys about stretching it gets cured and now I can do exercise better.
im 35 this year, i didn't do any exercises for the past 10 years. Started my muay thai journey like 5 months ago..my flexibility is so bad that i can't even do roundhouse kick up to the waist. i desperately need this and i hope this stretches can help me improve my flexibility to kick higher but i can only do the 1st and 2nd exercise for now because i don't have the equipment to do the 3rd exercise 😔
I love this video. I have different backgrounds in martial arts. I’m older now and like to find good stretch advice and cheats. This video and the stretches demonstrated are all that is needed to achieve high kicks. Forget all that was learned before and just work these stretches and see the best results in a shorter period of time. ✌️👍🤙
After a 20 year lay off from Kyokushin karate, I started back training again at 50. Surprisingly the only thing that I am having trouble with is kicking flexibility. I am definitely going to start doing these stretches.
This is a great series. Would you please expand it to include stretches to the calf muscles (front kicks) and stretches that help to 'loosen' the knee joints ankle and toes. I'm looking not just to expand range of motion but to keep the joints loose and pliable as I move. Thanks and keep up the good work.
This really works! Even my wife has noticed i could kick higher after watching this video. Coz now she gets sidekicked on her nose instead of her chest. Happy kicking everyone 🦶
Bob and Brad, I'm not a martial artist but I'm always interested in learning new exercises to help keep me fit and healthy as I age. I have incorporated these stretches into my daily routine and all I can say is WOW. The result is increased flexibility, increased range of motion and any pain I have/ or had in the hip capsule (due to stiffness), literally disappears in less than a minute. Thank you guys for all that you do.
Cheers lads. I use to be a karate man (in a proper coloured gi I'll have you know.... yanks....) but moved to capoeira years ago. Just starting my first class now at 45 years old
Very helpful advice. While I do sport muaythai and have no respect for dojo blackibelts, your information is a gem. BTW I follow your channel from massage gun.

Is there a specific name description for that green stretch band other than a loop band? Where would the obvious places be to search for one to purchase? Thanks. I just started MMA style martial arts training at 61.6 years of age but I have 25 years of ice hockey training & competition at them goaltender position and quite a few years in weightlifting gyms with daily cardio so I'm mentally conditioned and in pretty good shape. Looking forward to being able to perform full leg splits again. Its been years The 20 year olds at work are very surprised how agile and quick that I am. Thanks for the info.
Don't listen to people who say not to warm up. Run or bicycle 5 min or do 20 bodyweight squats & 20 lunges. Basically, blood should be flowing through any muscle that will be stretched.
I usually do the specific movements I am going to train at a very slow pace at a very low intensity. Then gradually, I will crescendo up to the point where I am ready to exert myself. That will be my warm up. Then I will repeat the process for every individual movement.
Very informative! I wonder if these stretches might also help with my running, or rather, racewalking. I don't need to kick higher, but I bet that my hip capsules would benefit from being less tight. I'm going to turn 58 in September and have learned that I should keep myself flexible, but not to do too much until I am used to the move, or the dreaded DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) will get me the next day.
This is great, thank you Bob and Brad. When identifying how your 'body is made' I find it hard to know if i can actually go any further over time. For example, when i hug my knees to chest, when knees are together there is a space between them and my chest and ever so slight discomfort in the hip joints when at maximum hip flexion. But if i part the knees slightly i can bring them to my armpits easily. I have difficulty getting into firelog and pigeon poses for yoga. When i lie down on my back, legs straight, heels down and abduct the hips one at a time using a strap i feel the same mild to slight discomfort in the abductor region. When stretching hamstrings and flexors I don't feel this type of discomfort at all. I think what I am saying is how to tell if a stretch is just grinding a couple of bones together or here in this insightful video the hip capsule. Could aforementioned discomfort be a stretching of the hip capsule. It should feel pain free as mentioned. So does the hip capsule stretch akin to muscle fibres in that they lengthen and possibly shorten over time if left 'unstretched' or perhaps more like a tendon or ligament stretch? And how do they differ to muscular stretching anyway? I'm a bit lost with the knowledge but do remember i used to kick higher decades ago...

An observation on the first stretch. Shotokan, and I presume most wushu styles, tell you to not splay your feet or tilt your pelvis forward in a horse stance. But that's just what you do if you do a froggie on the floor. Both things are avoided here.

Hi Bob and Brad! How important is exercising / warming up before stretching??
Think of your muscles as an elastic band. If you put it in the freezer then try to stretch the band what would happen?
Uh no guys you stretch before warmup exercises like jogging or bounding. Feel free to stretch again but don't warm up before stretching.
We do like stretching, though there is different preferences out there.
