    I feel like this trend is less about the actual quality of basketball and more about the fact that people don't watch full games anymore, completely normal plays that still happen today are used to discredit the 80's and 90's.
    Highlight culture has conditioned many young people to think that every possession ends with a good shot.
    Another point is that basketball is constantly changing, if you watch a game from today then watch one from 5 years ago, 10 years ago, 15, 20, etc. each one is gonna look completely different from the ones before and after. The pick and roll craze 3-6 years back looks ridiculous in hindsight the same way the iso heavy 2000's or pass heavy offenses of the early 20th century look compared to now.
    We really need to start appreciating greatness in context.

    • @Odysseus1999
      @Odysseus1999 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +55

      Exactly. Jordan flourishing during a time where physicality was at an all-time high and doing it with finesse, AMAZING.
      Kobe dominating while barely passing the ball during an isolation-heavy era, AMAZING.
      LeBron dominating during a superteam and three-point heavy era and never being injured, AMAZING.
      The tribalism present in basketball is ridiculous. People need to enjoy basketball for what is. Younger people need to realize the context in which older players played and why it was so impressive, and older people need to realize the game evolves and changes. Who you might think is a fraud now you can appreciate 20 years from now when the game is entirely different. Let go of your biases and enjoy things for what they are.
      You don’t have to discredit everybody else to justify the player that you like the most.

    The problem I have with most arguments about older generations of sports is that the main jist of the argument stems from claiming that there's a lack of "physicality" in modern sports, which can be all in the eye of the beholder.
    Just because a sport doesn't allow you to borderline assault someone and get away with it doesn't mean that the sport is any less physical, and YES that is what I am talking about here. I'm not talking about the modern petty fouls that would have flown in the 90s, I am specifically talking about grown men who are complaining that sports were "real" when there was overall more violence.
    Like, it's a team game that was invented by some dudes in the YMCA.
    If you desperately *need* to see sweaty grown men rub against eachother to reaffirm your own masculinity, I am sure there are other types of media that would satisfy that urge🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

    This is the best mindset and take on Basketball fandom today and I’m here for it man. I’m a MJ dude and I’m young so I have to feel like I. Have to defend MJ because I’m around younger fans but in all honesty my answer has changed to Lebron and MJ both have resumes to be the GOAT and they played in different eras in different ways with different rules and at the end of the day they both had dominate phenomenal careers. And it really comes down to what you value Do you value Lebron’s skill set and longevity ? Or are u a peak guy where MJs peak was the most dominate, consistent 10 year stretch of baseball we’ve ever seen? People are not changing they’re mind it’s set in stone let’s just appreciate them both for their contributions. It’s funny because when I was a kid I wasn’t in to Bball for the GOAT debate that’s a modern conversation. I was in to Hoops because TMAC was playing his game in Orlando, then his cousin in Toronto was throwing it down putting on a show, then Shaq and Kobe were winning 3 peats, AI was leading the new school with his swag, Lebron, Dwade and Melo came in and set the league in fire, Ben Wallace and the Pistons used to intimidate me ect ect. That’s why I watched because I truly enjoyed everyone’s unique game. The matchups and then rivalries and the history. MJ used to just be MJ and great no one comparing him to anyone else. Times were simpler and more genuine I miss that man

    I can't believe i'm posting this comment 11 days after posting on Jonny Arnett (in my opinion the best basketball historian on TH-cam) about the legitimacy of Will 100 points game... So i'm gonna repeat myself here, as someone who teaches history, I think what we are facing here is the classical problem of anachronism, people have the tendency to believe that they are living in the best moment in time and that everyone and everything that came before is to result in this specific glorious moment (try to explain to a class of 13 years old that their opinion is simply not better than that of everyone who ever lived haha)
    And the fact that this is a tiktok trend, against videos of guys who respect the history of the game is so telling... (This generation have a real problem with attention spam and believing everything they see on the internet) The only part that gets a chuckle out of me, is that the 80 and 90 players are gonna start to face what the 50/60/70 players have gonna thru, sometimes by their own hands. This world doesn't go around, he rolls over..

    Nostalgia will always distort your opinion on things like sports. The 90's absolutely had some of the greatest players of all time, but are many of them overrated because people are biased towards "the old days?" Yes, absolutely. Is the average NBA player significantly better today? Yes, absolutely. Does that mean the best players of the previous eras should be discredited? No, absolutely not. There has to be a healthy balance of being able to recognize the greatness of players across different eras regardless of how much the game has changed.
