    You really can take on the general contractor role and save big on your building and remodeling projects. In this video, we share with you how we installed a three piece crown molding with indirect lighting behind it. It's an inexpensive project that can totally change the look of any room.

    I like the accent lighting. Makes the interior of the home look more expensive, high end. I found that after about 2-1/2 years, incandescent rope lights will show signs of overheating and blackening if left on for long periods of time such as a night light. It was mounted in a similar fashion as this video shows. So, don't use it as a night light. I wouldn't leave them on for more than about 2-3 hrs at a time. I would go with LEDs from my experience.

      I like using christmas lights, those 50/100 lights on a string. I just set them up in the crevice and, after 3 years, they still work. But then again I don't keep them on night & day. Just a few hours a night

(2) you state you will install this so that the top of the crown molding is just at the right height so that you can't see the outlet - so, (a) how far is the top of the outlet from the ceiling, and (b) how far is the top of the crown molding from the ceiling? Thanks!

    I like the concept but I didn't like the look of the 2 lower pieces compared to the crown. The top was detailed and the bottom parts were just plane. Maybe using something to bump out the crown that also has a little bit of detail to it, like flipping a baseboard molding upside down. Im sure the cost would go us a lot higher though. Nicely done.

    Why do you need the two additional strips of wood? Why cant you just direct wire the lights to a switch and just set them in the crown and nail the crown to the studs, offset down from the wall a few inches? That seems a ton simpler. And use an LED strip with a remote. I literally about 100 feet of single color, variable brightness and light patterns, including sparkle and flicker, LEDs with a remote, for a dollar, at a bargain store.

      This is a three piece crown detail so the cost really depends on the lineal footage used...based on the size of the room. Today it makes more sense to go LED strip lighting instead of the rope.

    I have a trey ceiling formed by a 30° angle from the top 1' of the wall to 60° where it meets the ceiling. I want to install crown molding with rope lighting at about 4"-6" below the ceiling. How would you recommend to do the build out when not starting with a 90° angle?

      +PGI Cruiser To achieve the lighted crown look, the crown molding is installed with the bottom edge intersecting a vertical surface. So, if you want the crown to be close to the ceiling, you will need to add a vertical surface to attach it to. You could cut a wedge out of a piece of wood that would form the same angle as the wall that intersects the ceiling. When this wedge is attached to the angled portion of the wall, it would create a vertical surface to attach the crown to.

    Need some help with trying to do this. From the top of my window moulding to my ceiling I only have about 3 1/2 inches and in another room I have 5 inches. Second issue is that I have parts of the ceiling that meet up to sloped walls (just one part of the bedroom). Obviously don't want to put the moulding down the slope but could end at top of slope (which is a roof line seeing as I have a dormer added on to house) and just cut a piece to put on end? May need some in depth help with it. Thanks!

      I think it's going to be tough to fit the crown into a space that is only 3-5" from ceiling to top of window. And yes, one way to handle a wall that slopes is to end the crown and return it to the wall with a small piece. That's if you don't want it to be installed on an angle (which can be done...but honestly, I'm not crazy about it). You could then restart the crown at the next level. You will most likely need several wall outlets to connect the switch to so that each section of lighting comes on at the same time. Hope this helps.

    Great Job! I want to do similar for a Theater Room I am building. One question: Did you include any support for the top half of the crown or is is only supported by the nails in the trim piece. I am just wondering about so much upper crown being unsupported. Should I install some backing block every so often? Thanks again.

      +rebadaddy We didn't use any support for the top half of the crown...although it's not a bad idea. If you do, make sure you keep it out of the way of the lighting, you don't want to cause the light to be of differing intensities along the length of the molding. If you nail and glue the bottom half of the crown, you should be OK.

    Any ideas for a return to go back to the crown at the wall/ceiling? I can't seem to wrap my head around it!

    What happens when the light goes bad, can you unplug them once the crown is up?

    • @OpenBookBuild
      @OpenBookBuild  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. IF the light goes bad you can just replace it without removing the crown. In other words, there is space to remove and replace.

      Maria-Cecilia Peon You can put the wall switch wherever you want it...I put mine by the bed because I like having that soft light before falling asleep

      @@OpenBookBuild Thank you for your so quick answer! The problem is that if you have an old house, then breaking walls is far more than just the ceiling project!
      However, I thought that having a remote would be a solution. I have one but we had all the walls open. It is a dimmer with a remote.

    • @OpenBookBuild
      @OpenBookBuild  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The remote sounds like a good idea. Just make sure the plug on the lighting doesn’t stick out too far to clear the crown molding
