I miss you jkkmobile.. i never got around to putting a touch screen on my eee pc 901, and sold it a few years ago :(. I feel like my youth is completely dead.
@FlipidusX This was made in 2007,and the eeePC 701 was the first mainstream netbook. It took off like nothing else as it was cheap and easy to mod. And it's far from pointless anyway- touchscreen capability on a small, light, cheap device that still has a keyboard and runs a "proper" Operating System can make it very useful!
I liked your video a lot. Thanks for showing us how you did it! This takes the eee pc one step closer to my dream machine--an updated, modernized Psion Netbook. Now if it just had instant-on capability I would be very happy. --Mike
Niin ja hieno video, tota voisin kokeilla itsekkin omaan eee pc ysisataseen kun nuo touchkitit ovat melko halpoja ja jos se toisi jotain lisämukavuutta.
Just google it. You'll find some online retailers but it's technically not released yet until May 12th (at least to the US). You can buy english language Eee 900's but they are imported from China or Korea since its been out there since mid april. And on a side note you can upgrade the ram at home without voiding warranty (at least thats what Asus' site says)
@hitechguy18 I know they have overheat protection, BUT in the atom the overheat protection still doesn't activate until the cpu get's above boiling or 125C. It can fry before it hits this temp, but probably won't. The atom is made to withstand up to 100C being that's its a mobile cpu. Most desktop cpu's are rated at 70C, thermal trip at 100C. Anything over 40C is hard on a cpu, over 70C is dangerous for the cpu. Regardless, heat is bad. It is still not good to run without the heat sink!!
Thanks a ton for your reply. One more quick question. Even I am planning to buy 7B as 7A is not available here. As you have opened up the device you will be knowing whether RAM and SSD are soldered to the PCB as if it cannot be upgraded. Are they really soldered in 7B? Pearl white is starting with serial 7C and does it differ any way from 7B?
Hi, I was just wondering about the addition of the touchscreen. Does it decrease the brightness of the LCD screen significantly? Also, is there any glare on the screen itself? Btw, that is a really cool mod!
Its always possible dude, but the thing is.. you shouldn't really overclock the processor when its a laptop, there isn't enough heatsinks/coolers to help you out and you might end up frying the cpu without a problem. Not only that, but theres only 1 fan in the Eee pc, and it gets really hot. Average heatness of a regular laptop.
difference with early 7a and 7b is that there is pcie connector.. but it can only be used for extra ssd and it disables internal ssd.. so both are as good for mods... mine is 7b
Yeh I agree with you a touch screen would be much more useful and if your so worried about speakers wouldnt you just plug in some external ones? The laptops speakers are never going to produce top notch sound anyway so one less speaker won't hurt it to much. Good Vid btw.
Two questions: 1) Where can I by a good touchscreen? 2) Are there any touchscreen's available that can pick up varying degrees of pressure on the screen?
@gfreemanua It was under load, during POST it is under full load, and then it was booting windows. Without a load a desktop processor last's awhile without cooling. It is simply not good for the chip. Such a distortion is best to still keep in mind.
if your still having issues with it , turn the unit on and remove the battery while its in the bios / and then hold the power butten for a few seconds then reinstall the battery and try to boot it again
@mattg889 I did not say the reverse;) But now there are a number of models of netbooks with a passive cooling system and there's nothing particularly serious with these bare chips not happen for 5-10 minutes without load.In general, such a distortion is better not to suffer
the prosses is easy, but the non easy part is fitting all inside.. .. it all depends on laptop u want to use. for desktop its super easy as there are add on panels available.
Hi, I am hearing around that only 7A serial EEEs can be moded to the fullest. Can you tell us which serial is yours? I mean whether it starts with 7A or 7B or 7C ? Tnx
Why did you use a cable extension? It seems obvious to me you could have turned the touch panel 180°, any calibration software I ever saw is ready to accept any tilt angle, even 180° one...
hey, What about the cooling of the cpu and chipsets? :S you did turn it on without cooling :| is it cooled under the chips or something ? or doesnt it heat up at all ?
no, u can't disable it from tray. You could disable it from device manager, but i don't see point as it uses very little power( less than 100mA ) and I want to use it all the time..
NOTHING SPECIAL?!?!?!?!??!?! I almost got crazy watching this!!! But, it was a really great job you did in your eee pc. I'll think about asking someone to do it when mine arrives... Congrats!!!
Hi i'm wondering if you could install the panel rotated 180 degrees so that the controler wires don't need to be extended. Would the calibration correct this?
@gfreemanua They still get hot. Heat is bad for any chips. You know what, If you want to run your computer without the heatplates/heatsinks in place then go ahead, it's not my problem.
@rweiii1 Well yea if your not using the computer in any way it would be fine, but whats the point in having the computer if your not using it in any way?
Hey, Do you think it is possible to replace a larger screen(say 9 inch) into EEE PC 701? I am serious because if EEE PC has a larger screen it will be perfect for me
thank to show how to do this i have 2 Question to you first Q : what is maximum upgrade the Asus Eee pc in hard ware ? -- can I upgrade it to be : 1-- Cpu : intal P4 speed 3000 GHz or install the newest CPU's like core2due second Q : what is the model of his motherboard ? I hop you answer my Questions soon you can وياريت اذا فيه احد يعرف الاجابه مايبخل علينا في الاجابه
@MagnusRulerHardt I´ve been just peeking for a while and it seems YES there is a chinese( OF COURSE¡¡¡) manufacturer that actually sell that size, but not sure if u can buy them 1 by 1 ^_^. I´m looking for a 24" for myself, which seems to be a bad size as long as nobody make them :P
Does the EEE PC 4G 701 support 8gb SDHC Class 2 memory card on its internal card reader? Please someone reliable answer my question. I'm planning to buy an 8gb memory card for my eee. Thanks.
@pballdale haha, if you don't understand how heat can shorten the life of a cpu then you shouldn't be talking about them. First and by far the most obvious, It will get hot without a heatsink. Heat put's a extreme amount of stress on the Microsopic components and there circuits which greatly increases the chances of a failure, secondly anything deteriorats faster when it's at high temps, you can't really measure this though. There's more, but I'm out of characters. :-)
Man, this is an amazingly thorough install video. This is the kind of stuff that makes TH-cam so valuable. Great job!

Yes, you can buy a touch panel and just place it ot top of any screen.
There are many sized panels available.
Search "touch screen kit"

Great Job!! But wouldn't you want to clean the screen before permanently put it on?

perfect, one of the best videos i ever seen in youtube, because i didn't know if it's possible to do that !!! +5 from me

Excellent tutorial for the hardware hacking masses good job
hey,
What about the cooling of the cpu and chipsets? :S you did turn it on without cooling :| is it cooled under the chips or something ? or doesnt it heat up at all ?
It's a great idea but wouldn't the existing keyboard come in the way when one tries to use the touchscreen since it doesn't fold behind the screen?
@lemmonsinmyeyes if you take the usb from webcam or use nonsoldering kit with hub it doesnt take any usbs
@mikr0bas u may have problems if u take 5v from camera port.. also, if u disable camera, touch doesnt work if u take power from it.
Haha, i just got my eee pc a little while ago and i did this, its the coolest thing ever!
no, u can't disable it from tray.
You could disable it from device manager, but i don't see point as it uses very little power( less than 100mA ) and I want to use it all the time..

yes, there is even kits to make it really easy
Good video. I'm going to buy a used 701 from a friend today!
there are many size panels.. so, yes, you could do same with 15 inch screen
nice vid man, you should share this to your friends and subscribers
Hi i'm wondering if you could install the panel rotated 180 degrees so that the controler wires don't need to be extended.
Would the calibration correct this?
thats frickin awsome! where did you get the panel though? i cant find one :-(
@gfreemanua They still get hot. Heat is bad for any chips.
You know what, If you want to run your computer without the heatplates/heatsinks in place then go ahead, it's not my problem.
Yeah, just noticed that. It should not be a problem though, its not clocked at insane speeds.
@rweiii1 Well yea if your not using the computer in any way it would be fine, but whats the point in having the computer if your not using it in any way?
this dude has the COOLEST accent
RAM not soldered, SSD is soldered
some early 7Bs had pcie connector, later 7Bs are 1 to 1 to 7cs
8GB version has SSD on pcie slot
dude, does your cpu / graphics cards need a heatsink while your running it?
Your instruction is great so is your accent
thats pretty cool you should definitely mass produce them
Hey,
Do you think it is possible to replace a larger screen(say 9 inch) into EEE PC 701?
I am serious because if EEE PC has a larger screen it will be perfect for me
Hah, brilliant vid.
It's half convincing me to get an eee just to fool around like this!
A bit slow - but your character more than makes up for it.
Can i use the touchpad usb (if it has one)? So i can disable it with a keyboard shortcut just like i disable my touchpad?
Kyllä se suomen aksentti on sitten oikeasti selvää ja helposti ymmärrettävää... Kiitokset :)
hi, i have MSI Wind U100 (10.1'')
Will it work for me if i will buy 10.1 touch screen panel?
Does it take up a USB port avaliablity? (I need all the USB plugs I can get so I dont want to have a plug I cant use) thanks
yes, you can upgrade easily.. 2gigs max
Hey, do you need to solder anything to get the usb controller working ?
i like how there is no heatsink on your gpu or cpu. i wonder how much of it you burned up.
Is it possible to make a graphics tablet using my broken laptop screen in this way if i do the things right? if it is, how will be the quality? thx
thank to show how to do this
i have 2 Question to you
first Q :
what is maximum upgrade the Asus Eee pc in hard ware ?
-- can I upgrade it to be :
1-- Cpu : intal P4 speed 3000 GHz or install the newest CPU's like core2due
second Q :
what is the model of his motherboard ?
I hop you answer my Questions soon you can
وياريت اذا فيه احد يعرف الاجابه مايبخل علينا في الاجابه
no problems here..
does it always drop to same miscalibrated settings? Maybe there is problem with the controller..
@MagnusRulerHardt I´ve been just peeking for a while and it seems YES there is a chinese( OF COURSE¡¡¡) manufacturer that actually sell that size, but not sure if u can buy them 1 by 1 ^_^. I´m looking for a 24" for myself, which seems to be a bad size as long as nobody make them :P
xp toimii hienosti.
Ei linux sen kevyempi ole, siinä on vain yksinkertaistettu käyttöliittymä
how did u disperse the heat from the LCD panel with the touch screen attached?
Can you make it stop using usb power by clicking the remove device button in the right side of the task bar?
does that not wreck it leaving those chips exposed? that is the cpu and gpu is it not?
are there any websites that have umpc schematic's fore the motherboard & everything else just want to design one at least virtually...
Hello my name is Alessio. NICE video, really. i want to ask you if works with Xandros default SO. I don't want to switch to win xp.
why did you used other 5v and ground when the ones from camera port are available
You sir, are a legend!!!
tyvm! please upload video for blue tooth!!! i want to make an eee pc into an mp3 player as well while jogging!
hey guyz ..i wanted to ask ..when i wanna add a tpuch panel ..does that suit any other asus eee pc type? :O ? plllllz reply ..thnx~
Eikös sen pidäkin olla ;) Kiitos vaan itsellesi!
@jkkmobile sweet thanks mate!
Does the EEE PC 4G 701 support 8gb SDHC Class 2 memory card on its internal card reader?
Please someone reliable answer my question. I'm planning to buy an 8gb memory card for my eee.
Thanks.
Which manufacturer did u get the touchscreen from?
i think i one idea, with other pc with cd drive, u copy the drivers to a usb memory stick, and there u go.
@mattg889 not if you arent using the computer in any way.
works fine with vista and w7
I wonder why Asus didn't build the EEE PC with a touch screen in the first place instead of having a touch pad.
this works only in Xp version?. Thnks
Dells new tablet has multitouch so you should maybe follow that..
@pballdale haha, if you don't understand how heat can shorten the life of a cpu then you shouldn't be talking about them.

you can fit the controller under motherboard easily.
Puedo agregarle Touchscreen a la toshiba nb550d???, podrias decirme que cables hay que buscar? porfavor :)
@pballdale They still need one...
They may not die right away without one (your luck if they don't), but it still shortens there life.
touch pad is not usb, it,s ps2 so you need to use either webcm or mainboard usb pins..
i HAVE A ASPire one ao751 11"6' and is there a size for that caz i dunno how to put it touch screen
i haven't seen any effect.. getting about 3.5 hours with xp, wifi on and screen almost maxed..
where did you get the panels from?????????????
i have the acer aspire 8930g 18.4" screen is there 1 for that size?
@jkkmobile
Did you finish? :)
Kidding, sorry.. ;)
This chips have low TDP(5-15 watts on all chips) that they are not heated. This is not a desktop processors with TDP 65-130 watts...
yep, i dont notice any problems with it.. not getting any hotter etc.
IT´s A GREAT VIDEO! congratulations!
What driver can you use for the original Linux OS?
i nevar realized all the mods you can do to a comp wow
@onexrocks When I used to have one it got pretty toasty...
can you do this with the better lenovo ideapad s10?
But the question is: Will it blend?
you my friend are a genious !
@EdynWardenhari Why don't people get it... They still gets hot, It's still not good for it!
Were do you get the panels???
try ebay.. there is also solderes kits..
Very cool video, thank you so much!
