A late reply, but: early EeePC 901's had the ZIF connector, in later models it was removed and you need also to use a ZIF adapter plugged to the Mini PCIe connector.
Very detailed and easily explained video tutorial!! I'm buying a 901 this week and my only concern ws lack of storgae so adding a 1.8" will be great. Excellent help, thanks!!
Someone wrote below, "Why would one want a more expensive SSD with fewer GB than a comparable hard drive?" The answer is that one is going on a long bicycle trip and the vibration and shock of the ride will likely destroy the HDD.
I have the XP version and my HDD has failed. Thiis video briefly gave me hope, Alas my 901 doesn't have that conector. Thank you for the video anyway, I'm sure it helped someone out there.
@MarkusNemesis Thank you for watching! not planning Desire review right now.. I'm more qwerty slider guy.. so droid 2 / epic / N9 stuff coming for sure when we get gsm versions..
@jkkmobile Thank you sir for the quick reply. I'll take this moment to say that i respect you and your work whole heartedly, i look forward to seeing more of it, especially in the Netbook field, if only Asus made as many models yearly like they did in 2008. Any reviews planned for the HTC Desire?
Thanks for this - it is still very useful. Can you give any info on where you can purchase a mini PCI-e to replace the small ssd in the EEEPC 901xp? Thanks Wayne
Just had a look on my 901 and unfortunately the ZIF connector is missing. It's got the pin-out on the PCB for it, but the connector itself hasn't been installed. Looks like Asus has decided this is no longer required, so look out for this on newly purchased machines.
Great Vid. If I use the 1.8" zif 30GB hdd as the master will I be able to install XP and boot from it? In addition will the light indicators on the eee flicker in response to the correct hard drive activity or are the light indicators at the front of the eee geared to work with the activity of the 4GB SSHD drive only?
I popped my EeePC 901 open and it looks like I don't have the zif connector. Maybe I missed something and you mentioned that it was an afterthought on your part?
i've got one of these the 12GB SSD version but no charger so I am waiting for the charger to come from eBay I had a look at mine and I can't add a hard drive as the connector has not been installed on the mover board :( so looks like I'm suck with the SSD, great video I hope to be getting mine up and running soon then I'll make a video on mine
I'm trying to put windows 7 on my eee901 (it has windows xp now) but it requires 15gb free space that I don't have. Do you think that I can manage to install win7 OS if add this kind of ssd? thanks.
If I were to upgrade the SSD, would the module be the same size as the OEM (8 or 16GB) unit? Meaning it would sit in that little space and screw in without need for spacers or tape? Is it even worth changing an OEM 16GB module to an aftermarket one of the same size?
you should see the video tutorial about the Acer aspire one. which i've got... >_> all the comments are "this is too much, i rather not upgrade" With the acer, you pretty much have to take everything apart before getting to the ram and HDD. ITS NOT AT ALL USER UPGRADE FRIENDLY!!!
Thanks for the reply, late or not. :) I may have to look into this. I'm running Ubuntu 12 from a 16GB USB drive on it currently. It's pretty slow and I was hoping to expand the local HD space.
would you happen to have a solution for wireless drivers as i reinstalled windows xp home edition but can't get the wireless network to function. Any suggestions?
Hey, Long time watcher first time poster. I'm wondering if the HDD in this video came with the cable (grey IDE like thing), as i am currently in the market for one, and on ebay it only shows them as only the hard drive. Thanks
i need desperate help, i'm from the philippines and i want to buy a 901, sadly it's not available in our country. and I don't know where it is safe to buy online...
I am having problems with this. I installed the hard drive and the comp recognizes it, but it appears that the drive I took out was the only other drive in the computer. I don't have an SD card in the side so is there another drive? I ended up putting the old drive back in and then I was unable to change it to master status. The bios let me switch back and forth between the two drives, but kept insisting on keeping the new 1.8" drive as the master. WHY????? what can I do to fix this?
where can i find a hard drive like that that is lets say 60gb.. and if i do insert this new hard drive it will have the xp hard drive and the new one is that right?
Hello. Could I use this adaptor for and Dell inspiron 910 [mini]? It uses an Mini PCIe SSD. I was thinking of installing such an adapter, and put an CF card on it.
actually not as simple as what you all tought. only put in the harddisk,, just like that simple 123? as i know,, the ssd version if need to replace to harddisk,,need to solder 2 capacitor on the mainboard. why? bcos the harddisk pull more energy then ssd.
Hey! I have a question!could i change his processor with Intel CoreTM i5 3570, 3400MHz, 6MB socket 1155? 😁 it would work? I've asked somebody recently and told me that it's about the compatibility of laptop's socket with the new processor's socket
really no its not going to happen the cpus are soldered onto the board but even if you could it woldunt power up the cooling wouldnt handle it nor would ower supply
Why would you wanna do that? YOu got the chance to buy bigger, 500GB, HDDs for almost the same or even less money that you would spend on a 128GB SSD , which is the biggest one on the market now. Think about it. You will have more storage on the go because the 1005ha's power consumption engine was design specifically for regular HDD(hard drives). LOL
BUYER BEWARE I am on my second brand new Asus Notebook and it's a piece of Crap, the first one which I bought last year lasted only 3 months and crashed. Asus could not repair it and so they gave me another brand new one. Like the first, the keyboard has a mind of it's own and scatters the letters everywhere while you are typing. Asus's Online Help seems non existant and I would return it but they would probably keep this one for two months as well. Asus sucks
Most 901's dont come with the zif connector. You have to replace the mini pcie sdd in most.

@MarkusNemesis typically you need to buy the cables separately.. search for ide zif cables..
@MarkusNemesis Thank you for watching! not planning Desire review right now.. I'm more qwerty slider guy.. so droid 2 / epic / N9 stuff coming for sure when we get gsm versions..
Great video. I'm tinkering with an ASUS eee 900 4GB SSD Linux edition right now.
I dont have a eeePC, although I found this video tutorial enjoying. You make a good teacher. Unlike most of the people I see on TH-cam.
5 Stars *****
I really wish you were still posting videos like this. Or just posting videos at all.
Thanks for this - it is still very useful. Can you give any info on where you can purchase a mini PCI-e to replace the small ssd in the EEEPC 901xp?

Thank you for the 1st class demonstration.
Thanks for this helping video. I'm gonna buy 901 too and i was thinking am I able to add more storage. So thanks

hi, i want to do the same thing, but the HDD you buy from Toshiba don't have that adapter thingy
where do you get it???
thaks for the great video
@MrAlexandros99 main difference was 1.6ghz atom cpu on 901 vs 900 mhz celeron on 900
sorry, but i don't know any place selling those SSDs.
You might ask some local Asus service or repair shop.
Thanks, my 901 eeepc runs as new. I recommen also to use a clone software before to change the drive.

Awesome. You have some very useful videos. Thanks for posting.
@jackkessler And SSD is faster - I mean really faster, especially at OS boot sequence. Sometimes it matters.
I had this laptop i break it because wont work and wont start and was a very slow laptop so i threw it away to the dump
I recently read that some 901's don't come with a zif connector. if i were to buy one now would I get with a zif?
would you happen to have a solution for wireless drivers as i reinstalled windows xp home edition but can't get the wireless network to function. Any suggestions?
that's for the video, and keep them coming!

Is that a regular SATA2 port where you plug that HDD/ZIF drive on?
nice work. many people are waiting this :)
thanks
what is a good supplier for zif cables? I looked around and all i found was a five pack that costs as much as the hard drive.
i need desperate help, i'm from the philippines and i want to buy a 901, sadly it's not available in our country. and I don't know where it is safe to buy online...
why dose the linux version have a larger SSD then the XP Version when XP Is a more robust OS?
hey i have a problem, there's no hdd connector. everything is identical to yours but the connector. any idea as to why?

where can i find a hard drive like that that is lets say 60gb.. and if i do insert this new hard drive it will have the xp hard drive and the new one is that right?
