    I can’t sympathize with you enough, sometimes there are unpredictable things that happen seemingly overnight in an aquarium and then I’m in crisis mode! It’s so important to share the good, bad, and the ugly so people new (or even experienced) in the hobby know they are NOT alone. Keeping fish (especially when you have multiple aquariums like myself) is not always easy, but we do what we can to act when there’s a crisis. It’s the joy they bring me that makes it worth it ❤

    I lost 100 percent of my lake Tanganyika cichlids but other fish such as Siamese algae eaters , Cory's and one old Gold tetra. It is my belief I was working in the yard and I had sun block on my arms. I ad forgotten to wash my arms when I wanted to make a couple of changes to my aquascape. With a couple of days all the Tanganyika fish were dead. I have been keeping fish since 1966. This was the worst event I experienced. Needless to say I won't stick my arms in any of my tanks unless my hands/arms are washed to remove sun block! Good luck!

    I'm so sorry for the mass loss in your fish room. I was watching this last night and I started drifting into sleepy thoughts. I was thinking, the wildlife sounds are so cool in your area...but then I realized something...your tanks are exposed to outdoor air. I was curious so I asked ChatGPT if any spores in Australia could affect indoor aquariums and it gave me a long lengthy answer which pointed to yes and why. I think the spores may have wiped out the species that are not resilient to it, which may explain why the bonsai also got affected. Other plants in your area may be immune to it. There could be changes in your local area that may have affected your water through microscopic spores! Just a theory, but might be worth looking into!

    I just had to redo a couple of tanks where I lost fish to an unknown cause too. Sorry you lost your Tanganyikans. I've had a similar situation just days ago. Turned out to be a few cockle shells I put in a tank that kept dropping pH down to 4.5. I had them for ages, washed and brushed them. 36h later - 22 dead corys. Removed the shells, and they stank, just a tiny amount of tissue in the hinge grooves that had escaped cleaning.
    My opinion on yours. It sounds to me like a localised, one-off toxic event that probably started off in the upper tank before it cascaded down to the sump, being diluted along the way. Maybe that's why some fish survived. Thing is, insecticides (if any had been used) tend to be totally effective, and even small amounts are lethal. So I could be trashing my own explanation. Every parameter you tested for checked out. So it was none of the usual suspects. Neighbouring rows of tanks were unaffected. I am presuming the electrics in the tank were in order. The water flow was running, and the air wasn't completely cut off to the filters. No toxic metals, eg, Cu, Pb, Hg, Cd, Zn, Fe, As, or other substances in the tank (these often take time to act, giving you adequate warning from the fishes behaviour). So we can rule them out. Food: feeding contaminated foods that have been stored incorrectly and may have developed glycoalkaloids, these often give off a distinctive smell, so you would have noticed. Frozen shellfish have been a cause of major fish deaths; not often picked up unless you know what you are looking for. But you used Nick's Green Cuisine. Others would have been affected. These are some of the scenarios that have cropped up in my experience, but it's difficult to diagnose such incidents without examining the bodies immediately afterwards. Give the doggies a stroke from me.

    • @AdriansFishroom
      @AdriansFishroom  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you so much. I truly appreciate that and in fact, you could very well be correct if the toxin was airborne, got into the tank at the top killing those guys, but was more diluted as it went down through the system.🙏🙏🙏

    • @hippiecolleen1352
      @hippiecolleen1352 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      But isn't it also a clue that 2 other Australians lost tanganyika s in same time period? Here where I live Bay area, California our water system is really old, and now when we get alot of rain it affects our water and changes both the water parameters... AND THEY INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF CLORAMINEs they add ,but don't warn us.... lost whole giant fish store once........

    • @majorbruster5916
      @majorbruster5916 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, Colleen. Wasn't aware of these other deaths. Simultaneous Tanganyikan deaths sounds like an endemic condition from a common source rather than a localised incident. Chloramines, if not removed, affect all the fish in each tank that receives a water change at the same time. I have investigated incidents of chloramine poisoning and suffered losses myself, and can say that very few fish survive major chloramine exposure. Plus, the post mortem symptoms are quite obvious. Adrian didn't give us a description of the bodies. I don't recall if his tw is chloraminated or not, but as I said, the effects would be widespread and fairly rapid. More so in soft water than hard, and chloramines linger a long time in the absence of iron oxide or organic sequestration.

    I haven’t seen a lot or of your videos but have you checking your ph in your tanganyikan tanks?
    I have no idea how long your tanks have been set up but maybe oh is dropping. CO2 is one cause, low buffer capacity is another, or excessive amounts of detritus buildup.
    Unsure about your local water, but I heard you mention you have had a lot of rain in your area. Could be cause for hardness drop or more chemicals in the water like chlorine and chloramines.
    Good luck

    This is the problem with this new craze of "dirted deep substrate tanks", long term this is what you get, typically within a year, sometimes two.
    Rule of thumb when you can't detect it, everything seems as usual, and fish start dying off like this, it's free-floating bacteria(FFB) in your water column.
    FFB replicates quickly, many varieties can reproduce every few minutes, overwhelming your water column, even shortly after a water change without issue.
    Beneficial bacterium's (BB) typically take 3 days to reproduce, so the FFB outcompetes the BB, and starves it out of existence.
    Now your cycle is depending on out of control FFB/bacteria blooms, and that means instability, and resulting fish death.
    My suggestion is get a 13 watt or higher UV and start running it/them 24/7 in the affected tanks, not 4 hrs a day, that won't help you here.
    You can medicate and water change till the sun goes down, it won't solve this problem for you.
    Your deep substrate will not allow it.... You need to strip it out of your column and allow the BB to retake the resource load to regain stability.
    I am not here to insult anyone, I am offering you a solution to this problem, and telling you why it's occured.
    Best of luck, I just subbed.
    You can get pond grade UV sterilizer units for a low as 20$ now days.
    It's not the 500 to 1000$ problem it used to me to acquire.

    I don't have as huge a fishroom but I totally understand the frustration of having fish die and being unable to figure out why.
    Often asking the internet, especially forums, as someone who is a breeder can be quite annoying as they always assume its something basic like Ammonia spike even when you have tested 10 times and it is not. A lot of online forums just can't go any deeper than, Is there ammonia? Is your fish showing obvious signs of being sick. And if neither of those killed the fish they are no help in figuring it out.
    I'm going to spitball a couple things that might have caused this issue given you say the common denominator is the same sump.
    Electrical failure on some pump or filter causing a slight charge in the water?
    High amounts of some other element like Iron, Phosphorus, potassium?

    Sorry about your fish.
    I have used pothos in my fish tanks too for 13 years now, two walls and the entire ceiling in my living room is filled lol.
    But my pothos has killed fish for me a few times, because pothos have a poison. And I have had problem when leaves are forming under the water. And I can see that you have pothos leaves under the water in many tanks. Usually there is no problem, but if just a tiny piece of a leaf goes bad they can create a huge problem in that tank.
    Specially shrimps are sensitive to this.
    Im not saying that this is the reason for your problems, but check all the pothos leaves that are under water and see if they are ok.

It’s annoying but all you can do, is try your best, and accept that it is just part of fish keeping.

  • @BTQ410

    It is hard to loose fish for apparently no reason. The only thing you didn’t mention was temperature on those tanks. Might be something to look at. Also, not sure where you get your water, but I use city water, and they will sometimes add something to the water and it usually happens at the beginning of summer. You would think though that if it was either of these issues it would effect all the tanks. So I am inclined to suspect something else, but it might still be something to investigate. The problem points to the sump as that is your common denominator. Are the pipes common to the tanks too? Or are those pipes used by other tanks? Could there be something corroding along the pipes? You have fish and shrimp living in your sump, so that seems to rule out the sump. I would check the piping and connectors to all the tanks that were affected, especially any pipe/connector that is common to all those tanks and going out of the sump and into the tanks.
    I think what you did should protect those tanks, but it would be nice to know what happened. Thanks for sharing even if it was difficult. Anyone who keeps fish has been there.

    Metal corroding (pump, magnet) somewhere maybe? Some fish are more sensitive to metals than others.

    If it was me I would also suspect a toxin or bacteria or even some kind of parasite possibly spread by those aphids or even a frog getting in a few fish died initially and it caused a chain reaction. I personally would flush the whole system and run a UVC on it for a few weeks and make up some medicated feed for using seachem metroplex with focus and garlic gaurd and feed them that for a week while running the uvc and extra airstones.

    Oh mate it happens to us all I almost quit recently trouble free for years then things started going wrong. I got sick some things got neglected and my upstairs toilet started leaking into the downstairs laundry ceiling which was a big part of my fishroom long story short the day before the plumber came to put a new toilet in the fishroom ceiling collapsed and now most of it is in the tanks and tubs. Luckily most of the fish had been moved out but the mess is huge ive been moving most of my fish outside bit by bit for summer so i can get everything cleaned up and fixed but its a nightmare. I live on disabilty and have had very limited money to do things so its slow. and on top of that I had a 4 foot tank bust and an outbreak of anchorworm in my favorite nano tank no idea how they got there a plant fallen insect frog. Check for stray current too from heaters and pumps Ive had it happen I lost a bunch of fish and traced it to a pump.

    I think the reality of having ecosystem setups is it’s constantly going through cycles and changes I’m sure you know this so pests are just another aspect of an ecosystem making room for change. It opens a door for new possibilities in terms of how you want to replace the dead things since you are kinda the keystone species in this case except you are actually aware of the effect you have.

    have you tryed to use a microscope and check ur dead fish ? tbh if u have an aquarium room like urs, a microscope is a must for inspecting the fish . it helped alot.

    adrians, for your bonsai, this type of bonsai (pin / conifer) do not like water all time. ficus bonsai are well addapted for aquarium, but keep 10 cm between the higher water level and the tronc. (sorry for my english , i'm french). many thanks for your videos (maybe invest in a better sound!)

    Could the aphids got some termite killer on them and then died in the tank and had the fish eat them?

    Oh no…so sad for you. When I had fish and, later, claw toed frogs had losses. One because an unscrupulous store owner sold me a Jack Dempsey as a community fish…he ate everything in my tank…named him fur Jack the Ripper…and once because a frog jumped out while hubby was cleaning and ruptured her organs. While I was very upset, (all the fish had names and my kids and I loved them) Jack turned out to be very intelligent and quite the character. For example, if didn’t feed him exactly on time he spit water at me. The frog was devastating. We got her before them before there was much out on them. Her injury was horrific and we didn’t replace her because it was so heartbreaking. When I moved to Delaware, USA 34 years ago I experienced my first blizzard. We’ve had almost no snow in over a decade. My father was a meteorological scientist and warned me this was coming when I was in my late teens…I’m 73. Governments knew and did nothing.

    I lost an entire tank of Brichardis not to long ago, I guessed around 100+ fish. 12 or so adults and 5/6 groups of fry. Well I say entire but 1 fry did survive somehow. Oh also had 2 bristle nose and a batch of 30ish fry so we'll over 100 fish lost. Like you said it's part of this hobby but definitely sucks none the less..

    Hey. As for the aphids.
    The only way I could get rid of them was to get rid of the ants. The ants often farm them for the larva. Usually ants are living under them controlling the whole thing.
