    No matter what they say, every time i watch this vid i see Kerrigan's grace, strength and determination. She was ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! I am a true supporter of her performance here. Funny how they are factoring tech ability now. Thus, Kerrigan should've won! But she will always be a winner to me and her true supporters, GO NANCY, champion of Lillehammer '94.

    It's amazing, isn't it, how into these old competitions we fans can get. I love that we have youtube now to discuss these issues, b/c I remember back watching them, and thinking "man I wish I could vent with people about how UNFAIR this result is!" Thanks again for the civil discussion :)

    During this time i was going to cooking school and was getting exhausted. With a long way yet to go (and with the hardest part of school coming up), i saw her skate this program, throw her hands up, and her face just said : "I did it!" Well, you find your inspiration where you find it, because right then and there i told myself I was going to walk out of school , throw my hands up , and I was going to say "I DID IT!". So after getting a perfect 4.0 in the hardest part of school, and making it through to the end, i walked out and did just that! Thank you Nancy.

    Yes this is true about Vera being already established, but to the average American girl, Nancy help introduce Vera Wang to them. I remember hearing one of the commentators talking about this. And with the incident between Tanya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan, people really started to focus on Nancy and everything that she did. Many of Nancy's Vera Wang costumes were incorporated into many of the wedding dresses that later came out after Nancy's Olympic performance.

    Nancy, you are amazing! I was there back in '94' watching and always felt ever since the awful nonsense of all that happened. All during that time, all I could think of and understand was what you were going through. Everything else was confusing and made no sense whatsoever. This world needs strong women like you who hold up the meaning of 'class' and what comes with true class. Thank you for your example of enduring strength and refusing to not be anything less than that. So many people do not understand what having class truly is. Thank you

    I really couldn't care less about ice skating (no offense) but the moments from ~ 04:25 onwards give me freaking goosebumps! The expression on her face, her parents "celebrating".... wow, that must have been such an amazing feeling and moment after all that they've been through. Beautiful!!!

    Awesome analysis -- couldn't agree with you more. No one ever discusses the laps in Baiul's programs for long periods of time -- skates around and then does a Dbl Toe - plus no footwork at all. She got a 5.9. Here's where my interest in skating really took a hit; it was fixed for sure.

    I loved how she was gushing about how "I got to do it!" Like in that moment , it didn't matter what medal she won, it was just important for her to go out there and skate her first clean long program in years.

    It took me years of watching Nancy and Oksana's programs back-to-back to understand how this wasn't enough to win, and now I understand why! Nobody can deny that Nancy had several visible "breaks" in her program that made her transitions almost non-existant, which would negatively effect her artistic and technical scores by at least a tenth. She only had two jumping passes past the 2 minute mark, and even in the beginning she waited a solid 10 seconds before she even moved. I think her 1992 Olympic program was better crafted than this one, but she still can be very proud of how she skated after all she had been through.

    • @skatefan9495
      @skatefan9495 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      She wasn't skating under COP so those factors didn't matter and almost certainly were not considered by the judges. Some of the judges clearly wanted Oksana to win, so they manipulated the second mark. The more things change, the more they remain the same.

    You are completely right on point. In fact, in all 4 disciplines in Lillehammer, I feel the gold medals went to the wrong skaters. The ice dancing galled me the most. G&P's dancing was messy at best compared to T&D. Even Usova & Zhulin should have scored higher than G&P. I'm still scratching my head to this day about those Olympic results.

  • @landrykkb
    @landrykkb 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hell yeah,I would!Regarding Nancy Kerrigan's figure skating,I believe she was shafted because everybody along with the media would have said the judges felt sorry for her after her attack in Detroit.That poor girl was in a lose-lose predicament!

  • @ADEAL416
    @ADEAL416 14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @63blessed it's orchestral arrangements of three Neil Diamond songs--Play Me, Headed for the Future, and Dear Father. I'm not sure what the last minute of the program is though. It could be an original melody by that choreographer Mark Militano, who wrote the piece that she skated to in the short program.

  • @piznoctsauo8141
    @piznoctsauo8141 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Epic moment. The setting, the peaceful approach from Nancy through the Lillehammer media frenzy into the only space where she seemed to feel comfortable and out of disgust at the time: the ice rink. The costume, that exquisite Vera Wang that shone like a starry caramel night and changed costumes forever. The music, Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Neil Diamond, a rare choice that felt so good in its ambiguity. The performance, her best ever at the most critical (and last) moment of her career.

    How she did a triple triple combination and 5 other triples and blended them together so flawlessly and loose to an idiot who two footed 3 out of her 5 triples is beyond me!

  • @ADEAL416
    @ADEAL416 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @oofahman Actually Hoffman's vote was really the most defensible of the five who placed Baiul first because he at least acknowledged Kerrigan's technical edge (though not by a large enough margin considering the differences in what they completed). Hoffman's integrity was defended by Scott Hamilton in a later broadcast, and I'm inclined to believe him. It was the Czech, Ukrainian, and Chinese judges who had Baiul winning on higher technical marks that made this so ridiculous a ruling.

  • @lexlib
    @lexlib 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @ADEAL416: and i think hoffman even said a few years later he wouldn't have placed Baiul first if replays were available to them back then.

  • @ADEAL416
    @ADEAL416 14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @gonzo77ffm You're forgetting the edge in completed triple jumps for Nancy over Oksana, 5-3, and the edge in triples in combination 3-0, including a triple-triple. That adds up to a HUGE edge on the first mark over Baiul, and even if you gave Baiul an edge on the second mark, you can't justify more than a .1 edge. Kerrigan should have had at LEAST .2 if not .3 on the first mark. This result was one of the biggest robberies in Olympic history.

    @pzingh3663 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm completely baffled? When I saw this skate competition in "94 I was certain Nancy Kerrigan wore a black costume and her hair was down in one of the programs.
    The very program (which would be the"LP"), then the judge spoke afterwards explaining why he gave the deciding score to Oksana and did not mark her down a 1/2-point for a two foot landing which subsequently would of given the gold medal to Nancy.
    Does anyone remember that black costumed program?
    The key to this story is that if the judges would of marked the score just as it happened then it would of resulted in a different outcome. Since they felt Oksana's artistic impression was more deserved of the win they decided not to discount a 1/2-point against her. The mysterious black costume program was nearly flawless, only an individuals personal taste could distinguish between the two skaters artistic impression.
    Osana Baiul's skate was great and her artistic impression was extremely effervescent, she looked like Tinker Bell out there (which is probably why she got the decision).
    In retrospect, an unusual situation like this where both skaters were virtually equal, demands there should have been (at least) a tie awarding gold medals to both skaters. I'm not familiar with the rules back in '94 but Nancy should have declared a protest for not counting that 1/2 point reduction. The Canadian pair did just that in 2002 and they GOT their gold medal!

    • @Blosmbubbs
      @Blosmbubbs 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah wish they had protested. It's easier now with IJS. I think you're referring to the black and white short program dress

    • @pzingh3663
      @pzingh3663 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. No, it was an all black outfit and she wore her hair long. I just got the competitions or programs mixed up. I saw the one I was referring to later on. Although she was scored low in the beginning of the Olympic comp., I think it was to keep the other competitors in heat for the gold. Looking back now, her long program looks listless. Oksana's still looks great!

  • @TheGL82
    @TheGL82 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nancy totally deserved the gold here - no question about it. Oksana's magical presentation was not enough to make up for her sloppy two footed jumps in both short and long. Also, as much as I liked Nancy, I have to admit that I think the judges were rather generous with her marks throughout her mediocre and inconsistent career - i wonder why the judges didn't reward her this time when she actually had a great skate.

  • @hvnlycrtr
    @hvnlycrtr 15 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    hello, there were 3 skaters from the USA that had the opportunity to medal at the 93 Worlds. True, Nancy was the best hope but don't blame her! Also, Oksana's program was TOO damn easy! only cute little foot steps. DEFINITELY NOT GOLD WORTHY! Nancy's program may not have been "interesting" as u put it, but it was DIFFICULTY and she skated BEAUTIFULLY! Nancy was Gold worthy. What an injustice!

    Nancy went and delievered....after all the hard work she put into; after surviving the hitman incident, I would say she did well considering her comeback and showing everyone that she could get back on the ice, and do what she's always loved to do...
    Oksana was incredible as well, exspecially her age...
    Both ladies have different types of talent, and thank goodness they both earned what they both have worked so hard for...
    I watched this when I was 11yrs.....

  • @bindi06
    @bindi06 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I liked this program and Nancy performed wonderfully. The only thing I didn't care for was the color of her dress. It didn't flatter her and the color kind of disappears against the ice. A few years after this Olympics, Nancy skated a professional competition in a rich, dark blue dress that looked spectacular on her and really brought out her blue eyes. Yes, this is a gorgeous dress, but not for her and not against the wide expanse of an ice rink. By the way, Nancy deserved the gold medal.

  • @irshgrl500
    @irshgrl500 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    waddleduckie1- OK, I too, think Nancy is glamorous. She has style, grace, class, and poise.
    My point about her height was in response powerpooch's comment about Nancy being very tall. She's not. I was simply pointing out that she's 5'4", which is average for a female.
    There's nothing wrong with being average height, or short.
    And if you are female, and 5'6", you're on the tall side of average.
    I am sure Nancy is very pleased with her height, and appearance. She's simply stunning.

  • @hvnlycrtr
    @hvnlycrtr 16 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Anyone with at least ADEQUATE senses would understand that Nancy's style of skating is about grace...it always has been! One maneuver flows into another. She may have lacked consistency but how often do we see that...besides Kwan and Yamaguchi? And that is only two people. Nancy's program this night was GRACEFUL and Beautifully constructed!

    I agree--she should have won. She was under-marked on her technical score--"leaving room" hurt her and was unnecessary because Oksana didn't have a triple-triple. Nancy should have had no lower than a 5.8 for her tech mark.

    First, the ease of the triple toe loops goes out the window when it has to be followed by a second one. A triple-triple is a triple-triple and was more than what Baiul completed. To answer your second question about 5-3, Baiul's flip and toe loop were both two-footed, the flip more glaringly so than than the toe loop. A two footed jump DOES NOT COUNT as a completed element. As far as scoring is concerned, Baiul and Kerrigan were equal in terms of triple flips--i.e. neither completed one

  • @sfbaygirl
    @sfbaygirl 16 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I believe Kerrigan should have won the gold medal. Unfortunately, the five former Societ-bloc judges on the panel allowed politics to sway what should have been an impartial decision. Oh well, the irony is that Kerrigan went on to have a successful career and remain a role model, while Oksana went on to become an alcoholic who left her life, and career, in shambles.

  • @PhoenixWindsong

  • @ADEAL416
    @ADEAL416 14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Baiul's errors were more blatant. Two-footed jumps are visible to the naked eye, you don't need to know what the program was supposed to consist of. Kerrigan had the edge over Baiul in completed triples 5-3 and in triples in combination 3-0 (including a triple-triple combination).

    Had she tripled the first jump instead of doubling it, she would have won; this was not a perfect program. Her short program was better- but her long one suffered in the beginning. There is no wiggle room for mistakes if you want a gold medal.

      JasonMovieGuy I somewhat agree with the statement, but kristi yamaguchi fell in long program in 92 and she still won?....Now, this could have been because kristi yamaguchi was a world champion and the judges held her up vs Kerrigan who was favorite to be worlds champion in 93 but lost to Baiul due to a bad long program so I think Kerrigan may have lost the gold a year earlier in my opinion.

    But, on second thought, I bet the triple flip actually wouldn't have made any difference. The judges clearly wanted Oksana to win--regardless of what took place on the ice--and it probably would not have mattered if Nancy nailed the triple flip and Oksana had fallen.

    @gonzo77ffm even if that's true, Kerrigan was so far superior technically on this night that a slight artistic edge for Baiul should not not have been enough to overcome what should have been a .3 edge for Kerrigan on the first mark. Five clean triples, three of which were in combination, including a triple-triple for Kerrigan to three clean triples, none in combination for Baiul.

    Don't worry, Nancy, we all know you truely deserved the GOLD. It's just sad it took so long for the judges to be caught cheating. You are GRACEFUL and BEAUTIFUL, this world is just full of haters that should do everyone a favor and die. I LOVE YOU NANCY!

    Say what y'all want about the Scotvold's "wretched" choreography...but they sure as hell know how to teach great technique and solid skating skills. Both Nancy Kerrigan and Paul Wylie(also coached by the Scotvolds) display superlative jump mechanics and a quality of edging that frankly is in very short supply these days. I mean honestly, what IS it about the school of Kerrigan that engenders such complete ire? cont.......

    She is an athlete and she might have not been the best skater of all time, but on this night, she won the gold and was robbed. She was a victim of soviet bloc judging. It still goes on, and on, and on...

    @1dallasmetalgirl Baiul two-footed the jump that she threw in to make up for the doubled one, so she still gets no credit for that jump. I remind you that only in the minds of two of the five judges who put Baiul first did it come down to artistic impression--Poland and Germany. The other three--Czech, Ukraine, and China, gave it to Baiul on higher technical marks, and that cannot be legitimately justified.

    i do not blame her for her attitude. with oksana bauil winning by that small margin does not say alot about oksana's skating there.
