95% of the time that this video was playing, I was reading the comments. The comments are more interesting than her performance and facial expression. I agree, her performance and routine IS boring!!! Oksana's was WAY better, more interesting and entertaining!!!
The greatest figure skating competition in history. Lillehammer had it all! It was the greatest show on ice! Breathtaking, suspense, drama, so exciting the best time ever in figure skating. Thrilling competition nothing will ever come close to it. A thank you to all the skaters who participated they were all golden!
The fact she didn't win is almost laughable poetic justice. even if she's undoubtably incredible, the ice princess was ultimately beat by the poor Ukranian girl who went through Hell to make it there while while Kerrigan was making mega bucks on soup commercials.
Oksana's story is inspirational. At one point, having to sleep next to the boilers of her local ice rink because she had nowhere to go. As to her talent. For those who think she was not up to par, I urge you to watch her skating as The Swan in the exhibition show. Simply, breathtaking.
She is a beautiful skater technically and has poise and grace but there was always something so boring about her. She was the definition of white bread in figure skating. Her routines were always classic and a bit dull. I much preferred Kristi's more charismatic approach to the ice.
I see what you mean. It was an over-rehearsed performance. She did all the steps, gestures and expressions because it's what she practiced, not because she felt anything. I hear she was rather in love with herself and it came across on the ice. I think that's why she got beat. Oksana's was just more enjoyable.
MsJubjubbird I always laugh when I watch this program because of Nancy's facial expressions--she is profoundly self reverant lmao. The judges weren't fooled lol!
He was in the arena like me & saw those monster jumps there was a reward for height& power back then. The light jump & spin landings, the effortless grace the smooth easy travel over the ice her flow was gorgeous. The line the expression, the spins all superb. Otherworldly grace Baiul was enchanting back then. Oksana was always on her music. You're not qualified to accuse you're no judge, you can only give your opinion= 2cents.
To everyone in comments shitting on Nancy, don't forget that she got pipes in the knee just 6 weeks prior and only had 2 weeks at most to prepare for this routine and she still skated awesome and should have won, not to mention the pressure she was under too here, you kidding me, that was unbelievable under those conditions and/or any condition really
You have always win gold in my heart, Nancy. A true warrior woman. With that assault, I can't even imagine the greatest athlete putting on a performance like this to technical perfection.
No emotions- robot routine. Wasn't a fan of oksana but it was better than this. i have to say though props for taking the pressure and the situation she was in- that's strength. My comment is solely on the performance.
After having read so many comments on the videos of Baiuls performance about how Nancy should have won, I was expecting a lot more from Nancys performance.
Absolutely correct. Oksana was a gawky teenager. Kerrigan was powerful and elegant - a perfect woman skater. One thing people don´t talk about is how musical she is. She, like Sasha Cohen could hit each move right on the beat. As for her behavior off the ice - she´s a world class athlete - a little attitude comes with the territory. Men certainly show it.
Theresa Feeney No she didn't Nancy's program was more technical with the only triple triple combination.....and she was the leader of the short program outside of that flip that she doubled her program with flawless. Oksana 2 foots a landing has no combination, yeah you are quite about who's a better skater? Are you kidding me? And Nancy was ripped off of a gold medal. After all isn't it true that the winner of the short program get that added benefit of going last? Why was Oksana last?
king gj In singles, skaters draw for their turn in their respective groups. The person in first after the short does got get the benefit of skating last. Oksana did do a double axel-double toe and the end of her program. Oksana wasn't last to skate, she was the third last, Surat Bonaly and Katarina Witt skated after her.
You don't know the real story of Nancy's life. Were you there? No you were not. Her skating is what people are talking about here. Your remarks are uncalled for. Her skating showed class and greatness. Period.
I don't agree, but her outfit was certainly the best I've ever seen on a skater. It was designed by Vera Wang. Kerrigan is a beautiful woman and a beautiful skater. Baiul had serious ballet training and there is something in her soul that is special and is reflected in her skating. Even now, after her body as finished growing and she is living with the injuries she skated with at this time, she skates with such grace, expressiveness, passion and artistry.
She’s is beautiful no doubt but I’ve really always found her boring. Her routine definitely deserved better but artistically and dynamically it’s all so robotic and flat. Not a lot of power or emotion behind it all.
One of the most heroic, brave & gutsy performances in Olympic history. To come back from an attack 6 weeks before, off ice for four of them & just two weeks to train - and she turns in a performance like this? What a trooper. Nancy's performance was more difficult than Oksana's, cleanly skated & absolute exquisite spirals & spins, compared to one two-footed landing by Oksana, weak spirals & sloppy sins. Some have groused Nancy was under marked bcz the skating powers that be somehow blamed her for the Tonya mess. Like that was her fault. This performance, along with Paul Wylie's brilliant silver skate in 1992, are among the most "robbed" performances ever. Both deserved gold.
It often makes me wonder, if Nancy hadn't been attacked so close to the Olympics, thus having her confidence shaken, could she have won the gold? So unfair on all levels.
I have always felt Nancy was robbed from the medal she truly deserved. It has to be hard to work for so long and get into the Olympics, do a fantastic job (that even the announcer said "Dreams Do Come True!) feeling she had nailed it, and then not get the gold. Which Nancy highly deserved. Such a shame. One time shot too :(
Yes, I agree. Kerrigan always had the same mechanical choreography independent of the music chosen. Her spins were quite slow as well. I was never her fan.
Nancy Kerrigan doesn't have an attitude problem Tonya Harding does. Nancy was hit on the knee, and had physical therapy to help with her knee injuries. It took some time for Nancy to recover from her ordeal. Nancy has a way of coping with all the attention she has been receiving.
I always thought Nancy got robbed! Her performance was stunning and I had tears the night I saw her skate. Oksana didn't do half the actual skating that Nancy did. She danced around. Nancy was so elegant and graceful, just amazing in what she can do. I think the poor little orphan was what got Oksana this win. Such a shame Nancy didn't get the gold she truly deserved.
She skated as though she never had experienced a recent knee injury. No one recovers that quickly from a significant knee injury. Baiul deserved the gold independent of the "back stage" drama.
She looked sour like she sucked on a lemon on that award podium. Not a good look. Ever heard of being a good sport and learning how to be gracious in defeat? Winning silver is hardly a disgrace. She should have been proud of herself considering what she had been through before the Olympics. You should never assume you have a gold medal in the bag. There is always someone from another country who can come up behind you and pip you at the post when you least expect it. I think it's great this kid Oksana won. She was the underdog and it's good to see that happen once in a while.
Well, Oksana was in fact, a real ballerina on the ice. She just took figure skating to another artistic level. The other skaters then also incorporated ballet techniques into their training to keep them limber and also to help them maintain their balance and artistic expression.
It sucked for Nancy that this was the first Winter Olympics where the deciding factor in case of a tie was Artistic Merit instead of Technical Merit, because technically she was superior to Oksana. She was flawless, didn't have any touchdowns on landings, didn't make any mistakes. She was clean. She did five clean triple jumps, including a triple-triple jump combination On the other hand, Oksana wasn't clean. She did three clean triples, touched down lightly on a fourth, clunked a two-footed landing on a fifth and did only a combination of double jumps.
Maybe not in general, but it would've certainly helped her in this specific competition! She's clearly a master technician and very beautiful, but this program was as dull as watching paint dry. Oksana's program may not have been as technically sound, but at least it was graceful and entertaining!
The judges are just doing their jobs. Your job is to not criticize the judges because the judges were selected to offer their rankings of each figure skaters based on their observation of each skaters method of execution of the required elements. If you disagree based on your observation, well you should keep the remarks to yourself.
I don't know why the German judge came under such scrutiny. The Czech judge perpretrated the big injustice with a technical mark of 5.8 for Kerrigan and a 5.9 for Baiul.
@kreeseaholic Exactly. Hoffmann's ruling was the most defensible of the 5 who put Baiul over Kerrigan--he at least acknowledged that Nancy won technically, if not by enough given the disparity both in how clean the programs were AND in the levels of difficulty. But the Polish judge put them equal technically, with Baiul up by .1 artistically, and the Czech, Ukrainian, and Chinese judges had them tied artistically but Baiul UP by .1 technically--no excuse for that
It's easy to see Baiul was a Broadway Dancer in the program dancing to all the songs in the medley. She tapped danced to "Give My Regards to Broadway" my favorite part. Then she high kicked for the part from "A Chorus Line." Well done. What the heck was Kerrigan doing to Neil Diamond?
Give me a break. Every skater standing on that podium had lost contests in their careers. Kerrigan's coach stated she was often rude & mean to people. She was spoiled & enjoyed opportunities others didn't get just because of her look---not her work ethic or skills. She learned a lesson.
Sorry Oksana fans. Nancy's 2 triple combos plus the great triple lutz near the end. She had some difficulty back loaded, some intricate entrances to her triples, better flow coming out of her jumps than Oksana. Oksana's program was a good 3 points lower technically than Nancy's and although Oksana's great artistically, this was a little girl's program(basic broadway show tunes=not much to interpret) judges f-ed up here
I don't know what it is, but Nancy's skating has always bored me. I'd much rather watch Tonya Harding skate....Tonya's routines are much more entertaining to watch.
The triple flip that went double cost her the gold. Remember even with the 3toe/3toe there were only 5 triples. The judges knew Suryea could land 7 easily so they had to leave room for her. If she landed the triple flip those 5.7s would have been 5.8 and the gold would have been hers.
The artistic mark was the most important in the free skating program. The technical mark was most important in the short (technical) program. This was an artistic battle & the artistic mark the 2nd mark was the most important. Nancy knew her plan was to overpower technically she needed 6 or seven jumps in combo for that ala Bonaly. She knew she couldn't compete artistically eh?
The judges got it right! As many ppl want to contradict but Oksana had the artistic skills even at her tender age displayed much better skating techniques then Nancy.
Perhaps you're right but many of the judges gave Oksana 5.8s, even 5.9 for technical merit which left very little room for others. I'm fine with Nancy's marks but Oksana's marks were far too high IMO.
Oksana's technical marks were outrageous. Even keeping nancy's technical and artistic marks roughly the same and Oksana's artistic marks roughly the same there is no way Oksana wins without such bloated technical scores, and she might not even be silver.
YES! She has lost it. Won't let anyone comment about Nancy being the Best. Throws out insults and is very mean and childish. It isn't worth trying to talk to her or post anything because she goes nuts.
I thought people were a little too harsh on Nancy for being miffed about the results. You work so hard your whole life for something only to lose it by a fraction because of a judge, not to mention everything she had been through with the Harding plot, first getting clubbed and then having that media frenzy. It could not have been easy for her. But I'm glad she went on to have a good happy life!
Technically Oksana's jumps were massive her triple lutz cleaner, her spins & spirals more complex her death drop higher & more precise. Technically Kerrigan's spins traveled, her spirals were basic, as was her step sequence. Only her jump combo 3-3 was stronger. but it was a bit off. Her 2axle was weaker. All of it is technique not just jump combos. Imagine if Baiul had a real coaching team she would have won decisively.
I agree and I always wondered why she ended up in light colored dresses so often given that it was already so hard for her mother (legally blind) to see her--why not wear dresses that contrasted more from the color of the ice?
HowDareThey1970 Vera Wang tried to talk her into wearing an ice blue dress & a pink dress. She refused because she hated pink. Nancy became more “daring” with the color of her costumes once she was skating professionally. I honestly think she was too unsure of herself to wear bright colors, although she did when she was younger because her mom didn’t have the use of a monitor.
Actually, the Tonya Harding incident may have actually helped Nancy - in an odd sense. If you're familiar with some of Nancy's prior performances in World/Olympic competition, you know that she displayed headcase tendencies - melting down under pressure and turning in some seriously mistake-ridden performances. The whack may have taken some of her focus off of things that freaked her out (like disappointing people), & diverted it toward something not as nerve-wracking (rehabilitation).
Oksana's performance was less classical but more interesting. However, for those who think she was not up to par, I urge you to watch her skating as The Swan in the exhibition show. Simply, breathtaking.
I watched this many times as well as oksana' s performance..they both did well..But if the tie breaker was based on the artistic aspect, well I think Kerrigan's perfomance was far far better than Oksana's. Graceful and elegant.
She didn't suck at all with this program. This program was far more athletically difficult than Oksana Baiul's freeskate, and I'm not just talking about the jumps - also the spins, flow, spirals, and footwork. 3 of the 5 judges who ranked Baiul ahead of Nancy Kerrigan in the freeskate did so on the basis of the technical merit mark - a real travesty.
I never heard of that story. However the Harding Kerrigan story was international. How do you think athlete in the Olympic village knew who Harding was and judged her harshly? Why did Bonaly, Baiul & Witt comment on it? Judges spoke about feeling sorry for Nancy from reading the story in the papers or hearing it in newscasts. Orphan story benefited Bonaly also an orphan but that was old by then.
I wouldn't hold it against other skaters for feeling angry or going through the emotional experience of high stakes competition, either. It's not to say Oksana didn't deserve to win. She did. I just try to see things from someone else's perspective and don't feel the need to dogpile and tear someone down just because a mob of other people are.
All figure skaters take ballet training or dance NOT only Oksana. She just happened to excel at taking every lesson seriously. Let's just end this myth. Yelena Liachenko used the same trainers & ballet teacher as did Oksana Baiul. Lots of skaters take ballet most skating centers offer ballet training.
Everyone has a right to an opinion. She probably had some growing up to do but like I said, I'm glad she went on to have a family and be happy. You go on about how rude and mean she was, look at your own comments and stop being such a hateful hypocrite. Pot, meet kettle.
Spoiled little rich girl! Such a bad sport...sorry but Oksana had the better performance! Nice outfits don't win Medals! The snobby look on your face after Oksana won the Gold will forever be remembered and this performance forgotten.
I liked her performance alot better than Oksana's one. More graceful and she's got more poise. As for Tonya I liked her aggressive style, they were two totally different skaters. It's a shame they were pitted against each other.
the biggest 'was robbed' moment in figure skating was Yukari Nakano not even medalling at the 2008 world championships the second was Petrenko over Wylie in 1992
I agree with most of the comments, she had all of the athleticism and none of the artistry which sadly makes for a pretty boring show. Oksana was better and far more charismatic. She presented better for sure. The sad thing about it is that she came from a rough, impoverished background much like Tonya, yet she was able to present herself as a princess, as the judges demanded, unlike Tonya. Tonya's talent exceeded Oksana's (and easily Nancy's), but the judging will always be in favor of the princess.
I rewatcfhed this program again and I wish she had a different choreographer and a diffferent program...something that showed off her elegant line and neat edging. The arm position was mostly straightlined reminding me of Boitano's in 88 but his skating was of course much stronger than Orser thus the justified win.
Especialy the Czech judge who gave Baiul an absurd 5.9 for technical merit. As this judge had already given Kerrigan 5.8 technically, 5.9 artistically, the only way for this judge to put Baiul ahead (barring a 6.0 for artistry which was almost impossible as she finished behind her music) was a 5.9 for technical and somehow the judge found it in her conscious to give such an outrageous technical score for a performance with numerous missed jumps and almost no technical content.
Well, I agree with you that Baiul's story of being adopted by her coach generated intrigue, I think you missed what I was saying. Personally, I think Baiul was correctly placed 2nd after the short, as artistry was amazing and the double footed lutz was a minor deduction; Bauil's tech. marks in the long were insane, however, and she should have been silver. I was saying that Kerrigan's behavior b4 and during the medal ceremony was so off-putting that the sympathy she had was gone by the end.
You are very hostile! You would put Nancy down even if she rescued dogs and saved the children in other countries. You are not judging Nancy on what she did on the ice but what You want to believe. Nancy has gone on to live a good life as a wonderful mom and wife. Get off her back.
I said she had serious ballet training. I didn't say the other skaters had no ballet training. You're so arrogant and you've perverted what I said. "She just happened to excel." That is an understatement and a shallow interpretation of her hard work.
By the way for the 13k that her dress cost, I thought it looked too much like a cocktail dress, didn't have enough something... the color washed her out too.
Nancy -- oh, I miss her skating. So elegant, so beautiful. Those spirals were majestic. OH, how she was robbed that night. Nothing against Oksana -- she skated really well. But 20 years later, it still bothers me that they took out what Tonya did on Nancy. Oh well.
While I do agree that this was a well skated and clean program, and that Nancy did deserve the gold, I will also comment that she shows zero personality or charm on the ice. I guess that's where the term ice princess comes in. I had a boss like that. She was a very attractive woman who dressed impeccably, but was cold as ice.
This really should have won... a 3/3 combo, 3sal/2tl combo 3ltz great spins and spirals shame about the 2 flip but I don't think Baiul's re-cycled program was any better than this at all.
I wonder if Nancy had skated after Oksana if that would have pushed a couple of the 5.7s up to 5.8s (though probably not for the Ukrainian judge). All she needed was another tenth. Her performance was clearly technically superior to Oksana's: 5 clean triples compared to 4 (giving Oksana the benefit of the doubt for one), two triple combinations compared to none (and one a triple-triple!) and Oksana (as you say) posing a lot while Nancy skated throughout.
95% of the time that this video was playing, I was reading the comments. The comments are more interesting than her performance and facial expression. I agree, her performance and routine IS boring!!! Oksana's was WAY better, more interesting and entertaining!!!

i love your channel..thank u for All these post of ice skating!
I so much love ❤ this she is so graceful
Her last spin always gets me.
why?
Beautiful skater, beautiful outfit and just flat out boring to watch. I remember just being underwhelmed when I watched this.
Carsy Lea Exactly

MsJubjubbird I always laugh when I watch this program because of Nancy's facial expressions--she is profoundly self reverant lmao. The judges weren't fooled lol!
Nancy Kerrigan and Michelle Kwan are a clone of each other - dull and uninspiring skaters.
+suaysmut I disagree.

Haikal Danial double double combo is not the same as a triple triple. Plus Nancy also did a triple double combination
Oksana should have placed 3d with her two triples landed on both feet. And her list 2axel was so wobbly.
who the hell would dislike this???

I love that dress~~
So very true!
She skated as though she never had experienced a recent knee injury. No one recovers that quickly from a significant knee injury. Baiul deserved the gold independent of the "back stage" drama.
God she makes it look so easy
Good Job Nancy
Nancy deserved to have gold....oh well she is a true champ

I agree. Oksana seems a ballet dancer on the ice, she had the best school.
OKSANA CRUSHED HER.
MathewC- I agree. Something is wrong with her. Anger and outrage is off the charts.
I agree Roger.
TONYA CRUSHED her.

Beautiful but Oksana presented better. No comparison.
Nancy is just so graceful!
Ummm, she isn’t doing anything for half the program...
She's Nancy Kerrigan, she didn't have to.
Maybe not in general, but it would've certainly helped her in this specific competition! She's clearly a master technician and very beautiful, but this program was as dull as watching paint dry. Oksana's program may not have been as technically sound, but at least it was graceful and entertaining!
Oksana CRUSHED her. 5 judges + the referee agree Oksana was far superior. She dwas skating on a bad injury. Oksana CRUSHED her.
You can easily find it -- Scott Hamilton's commentary for the U.S. networks -- I think it's the one posted by 3Axel1996.
Not only do you have to be great you need a great story, that's why Oksanna won.
Loved it!
Oh So sorry to hear that. Rouben. And then you will see many posts that have not been deleted that contained nasty comments about Oksana.
The judges are just doing their jobs. Your job is to not criticize the judges because the judges were selected to offer their rankings of each figure skaters based on their observation of each skaters method of execution of the required elements. She won Silver
As it should be
If she landed that triple flip in the beginning then I would say she deserved to win
burgy76- Exactly!!!
@kreeseaholic Exactly. Beautiful performance....
Give me a break. Every skater standing on that podium had lost contests in their careers. Kerrigan's coach stated she was often rude & mean to people. She was spoiled & enjoyed opportunities others didn't get just because of her look---not her work ethic or skills. She learned a lesson.
What happened to the original version where on this performance the announcer says "Dreams do Come True"!!!!! after Nancy skates?
Sorry Oksana fans. Nancy's 2 triple combos plus the great triple lutz near the end. She had some difficulty back loaded, some intricate entrances to her triples, better flow coming out of her jumps than Oksana. Oksana's program was a good 3 points lower technically than Nancy's and although Oksana's great artistically, this was a little girl's program(basic broadway show tunes=not much to interpret) judges f-ed up here
I don't know what it is, but Nancy's skating has always bored me. I'd much rather watch Tonya Harding skate....Tonya's routines are much more entertaining to watch.
mandyjuelz yes!!!!!
mandyjuelz I agree i think part of that is how she makes it look so easy though
As many ppl want to contradict but Oksana had the artistic skills even at her tender age displayed much better skating techniques then Nancy.
agree
Zero emotion. Zero artistry. Borringgg.
There was little to no artistry in this performance yet she received high marks similar to Oksana for artistic merit... k
It's a shame they were pitted against each other.
the biggest 'was robbed' moment in figure skating was Yukari Nakano not even medalling at the 2008 world championships
the second was Petrenko over Wylie in 1992
I agree with most of the comments, she had all of the athleticism and none of the artistry which sadly makes for a pretty boring show.
Nancy didn't really deserve those artistic marks. Lu Chen was better. Even Oksana was more artistic.
You are very hostile! You would put Nancy down even if she rescued dogs and saved the children in other countries. You are not judging Nancy on what she did on the ice but what You want to believe. Nancy has gone on to live a good life as a wonderful mom and wife. Get off her back.
is brian orser commentating?
Slow and boring. Ugh I never liked Nancy as a skater
