James Carter should have his own chanel. He speaks so well and is humble as well as genuine. I love his dry sense of humor. What a treat to watch him describe what he loves and why he loves it. Mr. Carter states he is an architect not a designer - I disagree --- he has a great eye and totally disregards trends which in turn makes his home timeless. Elegant and yet comfortable is a hard thing to achieve unless you do it off the cuff and over time - not in a rush. He is not trying to impress anyone other than himself; yet Mr. Carter I am sure - impresses anyone watching this video.
The spectacular thing about this house and collections is that it’s not spectacular. This is a home in the true sense of the word... it’s clearly not meant to impress, but to coddle and wrap its arms around the owner. How wonderful to see something so unique. Thank you so much for sharing.
This has got to be the best program yet. James explanation and narration of his love of architecture and his narration of why he planned the house the way he did. His friend Jane that helped him. I cannot describe his narration, it was wonderful. His explanation of what he did and where he got the items . His succinct description of one, two, and three. There is not way it could not have been better. He is the real deal about common sense and what interests he had in life. You feel like saying , you described that so well! Visually the home is wonderful and I have bookcase envy.
Mr. Carter, I was brought to tears hearing how you have embraced your loves and generational history into your beautiful home. You’ve inspired me to do the same in my small nest. Thank you Homeworthy for sharing!
🌿 ~Oh my goodness! Hands down, one of my top 5 tours! This home is gorgeous, warm, well- layered, and so inviting. ~No pretension , just perfection! James is so sweet & charming... total talent & taste!👍 ~Home run on this one Allison! ~LOVE IT! 💫💫💫💫💫
I agree as well. The architecture is superb. From the townhouse style foyer to the bookcase in the stairwell with the unexpected window just perfection. The kitchen, butler’s pantry and octagonal dining room with the lacquered apricot walls everything just flows.
I love hearing people say "I couldn't afford". Nice to know not everyone has an unlimited budget. This gentleman's home is a true gem, elegant, understated and classy.
This is my hearts greatest desire. Find a great old house, restore it, decorate it perfectly. Live in complete bliss and wonder there for the rest of my days, pass the home over to my children.
That’s the key: everything means something to this gentleman. His home is filled with treasures that evoke happy emotions. It’s not just a random accident that this home is warm and inviting. It reflects its owner! Bravo! Well done!
Homeworthy are such sherlock Holme sleuths at finding they most interesting, amazingly, colourfully textured homes and sharing them with us all. Thank you for continuing to delight and amaze your audience! ❤
From one southerner to another, I love your home, your devotion to family history and your attitude about about collecting. Thank you for sharing it all.
This narration of heartfelt collecting and homage to one’s family brought tears: partly vindication for the love I have for storied possessions and the fond memories they sustain and partly admiration for the character and refinement he embodies. It still exists and now we have proof! Keep on James, you have mastered life well lived. I will watch this again and again.
Every single element of this home is elegant, stunning and pure perfection without pretense! No other home has spoken to me the way this one has and perhaps it is having a similar aesthetic which makes it so. I will be a repeat viewer of this home as I find it very, very comforting. Thanks so much!
This house is indeed a home with its very personal design, extraordinary detail and wonderful collections. Loved to hear the stories behind the various pieces of art and furniture collected as well as his architectural eye for the lighting, room layout , etc. A treat to watch!
Mr. Carter so much spoke to my heart! I can feel everything that he was explaining. To me he could be like an english gentleman from the 19th century. Not only because of his beautiful home but also because of his gesture and manners. Really really love this episode and wish I could take a real walk there to see everything in detail while listening to his stories. Thank you so much and greetings from Germany
Of all the guest homes I have watched on this TH-cam channel I believe this to be the best designed. I absolutely love this home. Thank you for sharing it with all of us.
Absolutely gorgeous home. He is so funny, genuinely humble. Love all his collections and I’m having a hard time believing there’s any “ scratch and dent” items but I love that he said that. Thank you for another great tour.
I'd put that comment into the self effacing category, but it made me smile. I should know because I am TRULY scratch & dent. Basically, it's to do the best you can with what you've got (including the size of your purse).
So glad to hear you listen to Jane, your interior designer, because she has exquisite taste. You have a quintessential home….every detail is the best example of it’s kind. I LOVE your home!
I think I’m going to slow this video down and watch it over and over again. The home is elegant but also so cozy and calming. Is there a story behind the red sconces over the Italian table on the stair landing? For me, they made the whole vignette.
Same here. I watch it the first time to hear all the stories, and then with a home this exquisite, I watch it a second time with no volume and press pause to study each vignette.
James, I totally agree that your home should be a reflection of your personality. Today so many homes are bland gray, white and black. I love color and your house is just beautiful. I think anyone could be comfortable in your lovely home. I could listen to your stories of where things were procured all day long. I live up the road from you in Decatur, Alabama and I love southern style and architecture. I live in a modest home but I want it to tell my guests who I am and that there is nothing that they cannot pick up and touch and admire. Kudos for your amazing plan that came to life.
By far my favorite home tour ever. Mr. Carter’s wit, warmth and knowledge are a joy. His home is filled with fascinating pieces, personal stories and history encased in a stunning embrace of architecture and sensibility. Of all the wonderful places visited with Homeworthy, there is no one and no home where I’d love to actually visit as I do Mr. Carter and his masterpiece. May the future bring him good fortune and continued success. Thank you for posting!
So beautiful, so personal, and so much truth to the idea of having a house that is a testament to your life and past generations. His collection is wonderful and his friend Jane also had a lot of very good ideas for the interior!
Gotta say, I love your brilliant expression, "scratch and dent" (if it's not, I can't afford it.) You are soooo adorable, I could listen to you talk for days! Thank-you for sharing your fascinating and inspiring home.
What a beautiful place, the feeling of home and beauty is overwhelming and I love it. I don't have enough words to express how I feel, but I love it. When I see this I feel like I'm going back in time to my happy childhood years in old family houses where I remember running around playing hide and seek and looking at all the beautiful things, the art, the furniture, books and the shape of rooms... This is like a paradise to me. How very special and warm is the feeling of this place. And I can see this is a man who did what we are all supposed to do to feel at home, to design a home for ourselves, that reflects ourselves, a home to feel good in. A home is where we should feel really home and safe, where we have the things we love that reminds us of who we were and are and that we are always evolving. This home is so beautiful and so is he with his warm heart and great taste of design throughout the house. This is absolutely my favorite episode on this channel. I loved this and I feel so inspired which is so important to me since I'm a creative too. I think as the creative person I am, I'm always looking for inspiring moments to be able to create what I love the most, and that means the world to me. This was a great inspiring moment, and I thank you. Now I know exactly how to uplift my own home to be more like me, the real me. ❤😍💯🙏🏻⭐
Beautiful, such a great design and layout, and filled with amazing furniture and collections. I sighed with contentment seeing the landing with library. The round window with a glimpse of the office - genius!. This is most definitely not a house, it is very much a home filled with love. I think we've probably all designed our ideal home in our mind, this gentleman was able to bring his dream alive. What a phenomenal job he did.
This home is wonderfully decorated and absolutely stunning. James kept repeating that some do not care for this style or that - oh, but there are so so many of us that love your style and affection for antiques. Thank you for the tour of your beloved home.
James - your narrative surpasses any on Homeworthy!! I was fascinated and laughed several times. Your home is drop dead stunning as are your collections. Hats off to your designer and you to work with so many elements and make them seamlessly cohesive. What a beautiful home and enchanting soul! Thank you!!
I'm in love with this house. So much personality, meaningful collections and family history, it gives you a big hug. The attic/main floor bedroom is so charming and the dressing/bathroom so warm with the wood floor. I really liked the sconces with pink glass shades on the landing. Heck, I loved everything about this house. Also loved James take on what a home should be and his sense of humor.
Best home tour ever! Everything about it is purposeful, intimate and interesting. A true reflection of the man who built it and so enjoys living in it. Wonderful.
I could spend hours just going from room to room and looking at all the marvelous details and soaking in all the art work. The giant two story book case with the cut-out window --- WOW. Just wow.
I don't know who told him you can't decorate with Imari...someone needs to tell those folks that Imari and Chinoiserie is evergreen in interior design!!!❤
Wow! My favorite home tour on your channel. So beautiful. Full but not overdone. Just perfect. Really feels like “home” and I love the way the homeowner knows the story behind everything. Absolutely charming! Thank you for sharing.
I love Egyptian revival and totally understand the enthusiasm for collecting it. It was nice to see a house that imbued the personality of the homeowner that wasn't pretentious but lovely and thought provoking!
What a beautiful home. You're going to have to search far and wide to top this one! And, who says Imari is dated? One of my most prized possessions is a pair of 19th century Imari vases and one of them is a scratch and dent! I bought the perfect one and then a few years later found it's scatch and dent mate. All but invisible. True beauty never goes out of fashion!
I lived in Virginia for 50 years (and miss it so) and was immediately drawn to this stunning home! Thank you for sharing your work and history. Every room is so inviting. jd
Loved this. He is someone who is instantly likeable and approachable, and I completely agree that the things in your home should be all things that you know something about.
Absolutely love his home, his stories, and all his collected things. Beautiful home and I could sit and visit with him all day. ♥️ I definitely agree that your home should be personal and show who the people are that live there.
The home tour of Mr. Carter is amazing! Every detail of his home is beautiful, well planned and totally charming, as is he. I love the various architectural elements and furnishings that he has chosen. and how well he and Jane put it all together with such refinement and brought out his genius ,character and true Southern hospitality by welcoming us into his home. Truly #Homeworthy
I so admire this home and the man who lives there. It is alive with true style planned out carefully to fit the owner like a glove. I could spend an afternoon just listening to the stories behind every single item collected. Such a beautiful home.
My favorite TH-cam channel… I’m always eager to see which home you show next! Elegant, tasteful, intelligent…. The home of architect James Carter is stunning… details abound & not everything can be seen at once, so it’s home that unfolds…. much like his favorite pieces of furniture…. 😉
What a gem! Such a beautiful home, filled with interesting, beautiful and meaningful objects. It was fascinating to hear all the stories of where certain special items originated from! Wonderful, thanks so much for sharing!
What a beautiful home and so comfortably decorated. It is so nice that each piece has so much meaning. What a collection!! Thank you so much for taking us on a fabulous tour of your home.
Gorgeous home. LOVE the bedroom and dressing room, along with it's curved door and curved bookcase, so elegant. The garden looked intriguing the little we saw of it wink wink maybe more to come?
Wow.. very beautiful and so thought out. Every part of this home is so warm, inviting and historical in its own way with all the various collections of lovely things both new and generational. Thank you Homeworthy!
This guy was so warm and inviting, and just very authentic… His home is the home of dreams in my book. And what I loved about him most is that he didn’t care about things that were “in or out“… He has things in his home because he loves them. And I love when I see people repeat something, i.e. the eagle tables… It just really makes his home so him and unique.
Not everyone who has money has this amount of style and taste. The most incredible house yet. He has the most beautiful and exceptional eye and taste. I love his homage to history, design and family. The whole book and library theme completely won me over. Wonderful !
I live in Birmingham! If I had to guess, he lives in the Mountain Brook area (or most of his clientele does). If you've never been to Birmingham, we have pretty much every style house that exists. European style castles, southern California, new england, NOLA (camel backs and the big ones wirh the cast iron), colonial, oriental, tudor style, homes with giant wrap-around porches. Its a beautiful place to drive around and observe.
True southern gentleman . I lived in Birmingham as a child- Mountain Brook area. I would love to see who you've read about! Your home is quietly spectacular. I love "old" families of Birmingham. We have a lot of them right down the center from west to east here in Memphis. I love history and go to most estate sales in this part of Memphis and think about the old families and their lives in these grand homes. Thanks for sharing your private "vessel" with us. Cheers.
Great story teller and the appreciation of art and furnitue that enhance your life and lifestyle. enjoyed every moment and will watch again. Lots of inspiration for me. Thank you.
Absolutely adore your home. You speak about everything with passion and love. I too have many things that mean something to me from my history, certainly not on your scale. As the oldest member of my family now I know how important it is to have items around with a story.
What a delightful, interesting gentleman! I could listen to his stories around the details of his gorgeous home for hours!!! Such a great sense of humor! Wonderful that he knew what he wanted to do in life and what he liked from a very young age. I so enjoyed all of it and thank you both for it sharing with us!!!
Thank you, James Carter, for sharing a glimpse of your lovely home. I share the sentiments of not decorating a house like a hotel. I truly abhor that! Decorating your house like a hotel is just that - an edifice of nothingness. Decorating your house with things you love becomes a home. A home - one that is warm, comfortable, and personal!
Wow. I'd like to write something profound and memorable, but I'll simply say I have met my double. The man, the career, the house, the collections, and even the fact he lives alone amongst his things. I have rarely met with such a close representation of all that I am. I have a large apartment and every room has a bookcase or three, and I keep importing lots of antiques and such. The only difference is I do love to cook, and oddly enough, for that reason I prefer a small, intimate space in which to do so. I have never been a fan of grand kitchens...and most grand houses leave me with a strange desire to seek comfort by standing in a corner of the room. This house looks just perfect.
Another joy to watch. I totally agree with him about not making your house look like you bought all your furniture from a store in one day. I have collected my furniture over the years and I like that so much more than all that “matchy matchy”. I loved the green in his bedroom also.
Truly a beautiful and carefully curated home. If this comes in 3 episodes, just the owner explaining and story telling about every nook and cranny of his collectibles and personal space, Id watch them all
Wow . 👏 Very impressed with this immaculately designed comfy home and even more impressed with this Gentleman Architect and his hospitable and warm personality . Love everything about it . Don't think I would want to leave the bedroom very often . The green walls and fabric are perfect . The living room feels like a library in a Gentlemen Farmer's English countryside retreat with the beautiful wood paneling . The dining room is perfect especially the color . I just love everything about it . With one tiny exception - if it were my home , I can dream , I would replace the stainless steel in the kitchen . Otherwise , the home is perfectly warm and cozy . It's only missing a dog 🐕 or a cat 🐈 and me . 😊 And a warm crackling fire in the fireplace during late Autumn 🍂 and Winter . Great architecture and Architect and beautiful interior design .
I absolutely loved this home tour. This is a "home" in the true sense of the word. Mr. Carter says that he is not a designer, but his beautiful abode has been meticulously dressed! Everything in it serves a purpose and is filled with memories from his past, whether it be family and/or travels. His home radiates so much warmth and he is a very charming and down to earth individual. He is surrounded by everything he loves and that is what is most important when creating a living space. He makes us see that. I am happy that he let us into the marvelous home he has created. It is done so tastefully and, most importantly, with love.
Spectacular guided tour through a lovely home! You've inspired me to go through my 12' x 30' storage unit that is loaded with 30 years of pirate bootie I've been saving for the right property.
Beautifully expressed
So true.
Well said. I agree.
I loved, loved, loved your home. Thanks for sharing.
How perfectly acknowledged !❤️
Now, THIS is why I love HOMEWORTHY!!!❤❤❤
This has got to be the best program yet. James explanation and narration of his love of architecture and his narration of why he planned the house the way he did. His friend Jane that helped him. I cannot describe his narration, it was wonderful. His explanation of what he did and where he got the items . His succinct description of one, two, and three. There is not way it could not have been better. He is the real deal about common sense and what interests he had in life. You feel like saying , you described that so well! Visually the home is wonderful and I have bookcase envy.
❤
Excellent taste and presentation
Mr. Carter, I was brought to tears hearing how you have embraced your loves and generational history into your beautiful home. You’ve inspired me to do the same in my small nest. Thank you Homeworthy for sharing!
One of the best tours and personalities you have shown on your channel.
🌿 ~Oh my goodness! Hands down, one of my top 5 tours! This home is gorgeous, warm, well- layered, and so inviting. ~No pretension , just perfection! James is so sweet & charming... total talent & taste!👍
~Home run on this one Allison! ~LOVE IT!
💫💫💫💫💫
I agree. Top 5 for sure.
Totally agree - one of my favorite home tours ever! Love all the stories and history that has gone into this beautiful home.
I agree as well. The architecture is superb. From the townhouse style foyer to the bookcase in the stairwell with the unexpected window just perfection. The kitchen, butler’s pantry and octagonal dining room with the lacquered apricot walls everything just flows.
Me too! The house looks like it belongs in Charlottesville, or the northeast!
Certainly seems like the sort of architect one would want to work with on your home design. You can tell he genuinely loves his work and his home.
@sweetlikehoney5216
James is the best at building a new home and making it look like an old established home that's been redone. Timeless beauty!
I think it has a lot to do with the owner and his interesting (rather than often boring) personal tour.
Absolutely stunning and a work of pure art! I am gobsmacked by such exquisite taste. I am beaming with smiles while watching this one!
Gobsmacked is the exact word I was thinking of the entire time I was watching this video!
This house is indeed a home with its very personal design, extraordinary detail and wonderful collections. Loved to hear the stories behind the various pieces of art and furniture collected as well as his architectural eye for the lighting, room layout , etc. A treat to watch!
So elegant yet personal. Was glued to all the stories and history of the furnishings, my favorite parts of these tours.
I have been following Homeworthy from the start and today episode was the absolute best!! This home is stunning!!
Truly, this is about as good as it gets.
Not only is the home beautiful and stately but also warm and inviting. James is a delightful tour guide and storyteller.
I love everything about this one, the beautiful home, the owner’s perspective and presentation and the fact it’s in sweet home Alabama.
What a beautiful sublime house. What a great man who has enabled his fantasy. And what a wonderful dinner guest he would be!
Yes, isn't it refreshing to watch someone so humble, yet talented.
A Gentleman with discernibly good taste. A beautiful and interesting home.
So glad to hear you listen to Jane, your interior designer, because she has exquisite taste. You have a quintessential home….every detail is the best example of it’s kind. I LOVE your home!

What a gorgeous house. I would never leave it.
Gotta say, I love your brilliant expression, "scratch and dent" (if it's not, I can't afford it.) You are soooo adorable, I could listen to you talk for days! Thank-you for sharing your fascinating and inspiring home.
Wonderful to have such a gracious custodian, living his best life, in a wonderful home he aspired for and created ❤ 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Typical of the mindless "trend" mentality. Anyone who needs to be told what they should like is a soulless body snatcher.
Wow! My favorite home tour on your channel. So beautiful. Full but not overdone. Just perfect. Really feels like “home” and I love the way the homeowner knows the story behind everything. Absolutely charming! Thank you for sharing.
Your home is so special! Your interest of collecting makes it so interesting and beautiful at the same time! Thank You for sharing!
How amazing is this beautiful home! It’s filled with all his wonderful finds and feels so welcoming, and he’s not “crabby” at all, just perfect😍
I love Egyptian revival and totally understand the enthusiasm for collecting it. It was nice to see a house that imbued the personality of the homeowner that wasn't pretentious but lovely and thought provoking!
There seems to be no end to the beautiful houses in the world.
What a charming man, who clearly knows his preferences and style. His excitement and joy inspired me!

Such a beautiful home ! Elegant and comfortable and timeless. p.s black and white checkered floors will never be out of style!
No they won't. I've always loved them. People think I'm crazy--they show dirt, yada yada. I do not care; I want em.
I so admire this home and the man who lives there. It is alive with true style planned out carefully to fit the owner like a glove. I could spend an afternoon just listening to the stories behind every single item collected. Such a beautiful home.
Wonderful home. His dedication, personal and professional, shines through. Love his stories, a Master Class in design.
Clearly one of the best homes ever. Spectacular.
Really really beautiful. I would never leave. Just beautiful in every way.
My favorite TH-cam channel… I’m always eager to see which home you show next!
Elegant, tasteful, intelligent…. The home of architect James Carter is stunning… details abound & not everything can be seen at once, so it’s home that unfolds…. much like his favorite pieces of furniture…. 😉
His bedroom and bathroom area is the best part of the house! So much character and whimsy. A child's attic dream for a man. It's perfection.
What a gem! Such a beautiful home, filled with interesting, beautiful and meaningful objects. It was fascinating to hear all the stories of where certain special items originated from! Wonderful, thanks so much for sharing!
WOW! Absolutely gorgeous. Loved every detail.
What a beautiful home and so comfortably decorated. It is so nice that each piece has so much meaning. What a collection!! Thank you so much for taking us on a fabulous tour of your home.
Such a warm & elegant atmosphere.
Beautiful home❣️
Gorgeous home. LOVE the bedroom and dressing room, along with it's curved door and curved bookcase, so elegant. The garden looked intriguing the little we saw of it wink wink maybe more to come?
Wow.. very beautiful and so thought out. Every part of this home is so warm, inviting and historical in its own way with all the various collections of lovely things both new and generational. Thank you Homeworthy!
THAT was a beautiful home. Every inch, every detail, every piece of art *chef's kiss*. Our charming host has exquisite taste.
Stunning ! Absolutely beautiful ! Thank you for the tour !
This is my favorite home so far! It’s a collected home and anyone can do that. It’s very warm and inviting! Such a lovely home!
Best homeworthy visit ever!
Thank you.
Beautifully curated Southern home! Kudos to the homeowner and his designer friend!
This house 🏡 is awesome. I love a collected/curated home.
What a gorgeous home! Absolutely stunning! And what a great personality Mr. Carter has!
The high wall of Books in that wonderful stairway!
And Perfect Window in it to let in Light!!
This Home is total perfection.
Wow! Absolutely stunning 😍
This is, hands down, my favorite Homeworthy video. Beautiful home and charming gentleman. Thank you, James Carter, for the tour and the stories.
This Man Is A Genius.Respect ❤
One of the most beautiful and genuine homes you've shown. A feast to watch. Props to James for being such a good host.
What a lovely man and home. Rich in detail and tradition. Loved his stories and "presence."
He didn’t mention it, but I loved the Lucite vanity in the powder room. I hope he incorporates more of that 70s glam something I love also.
Phenomenal, beyond belief
Another joy to watch. I totally agree with him about not making your house look like you bought all your furniture from a store in one day. I have collected my furniture over the years and I like that so much more than all that “matchy matchy”. I loved the green in his bedroom also.
Very nice man, and I so enjoyed his tour. Thank you!
Truly a beautiful and carefully curated home. If this comes in 3 episodes, just the owner explaining and story telling about every nook and cranny of his collectibles and personal space, Id watch them all
I live in Birmingham, UK. And there are definitely no mountains here! Cute house x
Beautiful human being!
Not only is this a stylish, elegant home, the owner is funny too. Loved the vid.
This is my favorite house.
Spectacular guided tour through a lovely home! You've inspired me to go through my 12' x 30' storage unit that is loaded with 30 years of pirate bootie I've been saving for the right property.
At least you saved it. I wish I had. SMH
Extremely impressive home and furnishings. I am in awe.
