Thanks for this video. I agree about the much needed usability improvements, simple basic things that would make a huge difference. For instance, in the Windows version we can't even have a shortcut for copy-pasting properties (I think it is possible on the mac version, though). Or the issue you mention about groups cropping the canvas internally.
Like you say, I also think Camtasia is the best option for screen capture/editing, at least on Windows, but sometimes I really wish there was some real competition so that they (Camtasia) had no other option but to start implementing more useful things and less "tiling" nonsense. The dynamic captions are cool, though, and I kind of hope they are saving some interesting new features for Camtasia 2025, but we'll see...
There are always promises that the new version will have more and more stuff, but it tends to not be the case. Maybe one or two super cool features, like this year's dynamic captions, and lots of small things.
I'm sure it doesn't make you feel better to hear that "Copy / Paste clip properties" doesn't have a shortcut on Mac either. :( Lots of functions could use a configurable shortcut. It would save a lot of time.
I hope this pricing structure change will mean they invest in a larger developer team and bring us more stuff. When I look at DaVinci Resolve's releases, they are packed full of new stuff nobody can keep track of, ... enough said! :D
I fully agree with this comment. So many basic functionality is missing and many basic things don't even work. Instead nonsense features are added. Also: +1 for keyboard shortcut for copy/paste.
Loved the Alpha Invert text tip!
Thanks!
This is great! Thanks for doing such a wonderful job on this video. The new captions feature is outstanding.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
From the terms of service for Asset Library items. "You shall not use any Asset item:
a. Except solely as incorporated into your Content in conjunction with your use of TechSmith products and services such as Camtasia® and Snagit®." This is why I get the regular effects, audio, and video directly from the main sites rather than Camtasia Assets. Getting them directly from others doesn't restrict what software I can use them with. I'd hate to have to submit a project zip folder just to prove I used it properly.
I'd be curious to see how they would prove that. I'd say the burden of proof is on them and I'm quite certain they can't ask for your project files without a court order or something like that.
34:20 With the new dynamic captions feature, I think the reason to lower the opacity on the past words (as well as the future words) is to bring the focal point and attention onto the word that is being spoken at that precise moment.
Yeah, that's probably why, if one is reading the words instead of listening to the audio.
I never created closed captions for my tutorials because of the work involved, but since I got this update, maybe I'll give it a try.
Yeah, one of the long-awaited features in Camtasia. Glad it's finally here. Now if only we got a little more control over the actual transcription...
very good!thanks for your video
Thanks for watching!
Appreciate your candor! Have been a Camtasia user and on maintenance plan for years. Am considering getting the assets package from someone but like you said, there are a lot to chose from.
Totally. I subscribed to various ones over the course of a few years but then kind of stopped. Now, if I use anything, it'll be from the ones coming with my Descript subscription (which come from Storyblocks). But they don't have Camtasia-specific assets. And the reason you can't find those on most platforms is because Camtasia's way of creating reusable assets has only been created recently and it remains clunky.
I won't upgrade at this time. Usually it comes with lots of bugs when first released. Thank You for the video.
That's true, it can be buggy, I feel more so on Windows than Mac. I haven't found significant ones yet on Mac.
I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts in a video on Techsmith's recent announcement regarding the move from perpetual to subscription based licensing.
My bottomline thought is this:
If this move to subscription means we will get MORE features MORE often, then that's great. I might subscribe to it rather than keep the maintenance plan.
But if it means business as usual and we get underwhelming features once a year... I'll stick with the maintenance for as long as I can.
It was never easy to keep innovating with $50/year from each subscriber. I can understand that part. Hoping that now the increased subscription cost will mean more effort towards development. Camtasia at this moment, is quite behind on a lot of the new stuff that's been going on in the industry. And I don't mean AI.
font stroke without the option to remove the fill. Odd oversight. But at least there's a workaround. Thanks for the deep dive, Cristi!!
My pleasure, thanks! Was there anything you weren't aware of? I know you're deep in Camtasia too.
I’ve been taking a break from computer work, so haven’t really had an opportunity to dive into CAMTASIA much. The whole pricing structure changes made me stop what was doing and pay attention.
Great video, thanks for sharing. Love Camtasia but yearly update is normally underwhelming 😢 to be fair they have been delivering small enhancements along with bug fixes throughout the year. I would like to see more updates, more often.
Yeah, let's hope that the subscription model will facilitate that and we'll see more frequent and significant updates.
Thx for the video!
I can not agree more that separating the text based editing of the video in a separate application (Audiate) is a kick below the belt, it is so much more convenient to watch the video during the text-based edditing, like in Pro and Descript, and all that for a high price if compared.
And one question, You mentioned the cursor can be in a separate track, but when I record it is bundled in the screen recording track. Did I got You correctly that the cursor can be separated from the screen recording track?
Camtasia was here first. Audiate was added after, so it wasn't really 'separating it' from Camtasia. It was a separate product to begin with. Now, I'm still hoping at some point they will be merged. That would give Camtasia some amazing superpowers.
As for the cursor question: Yes, the cursor metadata (position, clicks) is recorded separately, and the cursor is not part of the recorded video. That means you can use Camtasia (only Camtasia) to edit the cursor - make it larger, smaller, change it to a different graphic altogether - as well as change its trajectory, add click event highlights and more, all after recording. I think that's great.
Can you download the captions?
Not at this time.
Where is the text to speech in Windows? Think u mean Audiate, which u have to pay for.
Yeah, Camtasia's text-to-speech is via Audiate.
As a media designer, I find it increasingly annoying that we do not have VST support in Camtasia. In my opinion, professional audio editing is not feasible without VST integration. There's no choice but to do the editing later in professional video editing software, and then you might as well record there right from the start.
I agree. More plugins could help too, but I think the drive is now towards AI features. Have you seen Techsmith's "sneak peak" at their experimental features? Lots of ChatGPT, DALL-E, etc. No word on introducing more traditional improvements.
2024 crashes every time I try to use Dynamic Captions. Probably a conflict with my system if no one else is having problems.
I have a lot of problems with Camtasia 2024. It already crashes when I try to start it on my Windows 10 system.
Not crashed for me yet. I'm on Mac with Apple silicon. Perhaps try a reinstall and make sure your graphics drivers are up to date. That can usually cause crashes and conflicts.
@@Graphicious Everything up to date. I hope development will be able to fix it.
@studioonetutorials probably a good idea to let support know about it and possibly give them some logs
@@Graphicious They already analyzed my logs and suggested all kinds of Windows registry hacks which did not help so far. In my experience of using Camtasia for more than 10 years, it's a bug that needs to be resolved.
What a meagre update.
It's not too bad but not as feature-full as I had hoped.
@@Graphicious Isn't 2025 coming in the Fall this year? Maybe that's what they are waiting for i.e to add more stuff that could rival something like "Final Cut" - hopefully without the complications
I think the '2025' version is coming next year. Traditionally, all major versions of Camtasia have released somewhere around April-June of each year. Last year it was even later than that due to bugs or complications. Not sure.
In the autumn-winter, we get a new version of Snagit though.
My opinion is that Camtasia will never rival anything the links of FinalCut. Too much of a difference and I think, scope.
@@Graphicious it is ok. I notice that you and also Rob the Maritimer (and probably others too) jumps at Camtasia's defence. Why not just call it for what it is: A very poor update.
I have no problems with you guys defending an update from a site you are fans of, the update may not even be worth the money invested.
Honestly, not defending or attacking. I’m impartial. I just try to stay positive (which is hard for me :) because I notice I have a tendency to be negative sometimes.
I think this update is indeed light in new stuff and also includes things we didn’t ask for. It also doesn’t include a lot of things we could use, which would save time for veteran editors but those are not flashy and don’t make the influencers buzz with excitement.
At the end of the day, everyone is free to use a variety of tools. I discovered that one’s coverage, support, praises, reviews of a specific app is not rewarded by the companies with any kind of loyalty. That is the case for all the tools I cover on my channel. They don’t give me any special treatment and I don’t feel obliged to give them any in return. I can say the good and the bad. Which is probably why I was never even approached to do any collaboration or sponsored video by any of them. Or maybe I don’t have the thousands of subscribers they are looking for.
Also, I am using other tools - many more in fact - and I will start covering those also on my channels. Mastering a variety of tools and workflows helps one not become a slave to the whims of a single corporation and be always waiting for them to roll out the features you need in your work. Makes sense?
poor update and not worth for money
Many customers seem to think that. I tend to agree, if you were considering upgrading and paying for it rather than having Maintenance and getting it for free, it might be a hard sell.
@@Graphicious I hope the next update in 2025 will be worthwhile.
I wont urgrade. Not too impressed.
It is hard to justify the price of upgrade to this version if you don't have the maintenance plan.
@@Graphicious I’ll be honest… I have switched to ecamm for 98% of what I do now for my online videos… That in conjunction with keynote is really a winning combination. It requires a little more prep time, and I do it in one take.
Is that because you're also streaming your presentations live?
