Can An Alt-Board Guy Learn To Ride A Modern Thruster? 'The Mysterious Affair' With Harrison Roach

  • The dancing dandy starring in the film above is Mr. Harrison Roach, one of the darlings of the post-modern ride-anything movement.
    For the last 10 years Harry and a handful of "open-minded" free surfers have managed to scrape livings as an aspirational, relatable, journeyman aesthete. For Harry and surfers like him, their marketability has come not in spite of, but because of, his abstinence from anything like mainstream high-performance equipment, ie. the modern thruster.
    And this makes some people very angry.
    Many of you watching this right now have long held the belief that the heavily-glassed, elegantly tinted alternative equipment these “hipster kooks” ride has concealed fundamental flaws in their surfing.
    "Put these guys on a real surfboard," you say. "Then we’ll see how pretty they look.”
    This is what happens when you put one of surfing’s foremost alternative stylists on teamlite foam and fiberglass.

      To me, this is what an all rounded surfer is. Throw any board at him and he'll perform. Maybe the most complete surfer these days. Maybe Rastovich can be in that ball park too, or even Mikey Febs. Now, put most CT surfers on a classic log and just watch them fall flat on their stomach as they try to bottom turn to hit the lip...

    Clever idea stab. I was very surprised at the ease of his transition, his feet looked in the right spot after moving heavy foam, he looked at ease carving as well. I’ve found the transition back to smaller boards quite hard, your paddle power greatly diminished, positioning the take-off gets awkward etc. I would’ve liked to hear how he found that experience. Did he get less waves for example, or try to hunt down a peak that he’d normally catch with more foam but couldn’t get there with 27 litres? Otherwise, solid delivery.

Performance board, log, bodyboard, body surf, retro, windsurf, kitesurf, foilsurf doesn't matter but just tying yourself to one thing and you will eventually stop surfing. You can't be an expert at all of them and that's what you should embrace.

    9:35 that's the biggest problem with FCS2, but mostly because of how much strain popping them in puts on the glass just behind the fins. I've had 5 boards with FCS2 and 4 have got cracks at the back of the fin boxes within a month of use. One of them cracked right through to the foam and started taking on water, but to be fair that one was well-used when I bought it. The annoying thing is, as much as I like the idea of screw-less fins, pretty much everyone I know uses at least one screw with FCS2 anyway (lost a couple fins in the water before I started using screws myself), so the locking mechanism is totally unecessary.

He's an incredible surfer and he wants to feel different sensations on a wave. A log isn't 'low performing'... It's high performing if you want to get a noseride... You don't hop on an old school twin fin if you want to be shredding like John John and yet it has something different: looseness and skatey-ness.
      I don't like this attitude of a wafer-thin thruster master race, I thought we were progressing towards a surfing culture that said people should ride the right board for the right conditions... This guy rips, congrats on the air revo. I am surprised how different the shadow performed in a beach break then the js was the best at the point break

    Amazing concept and video! he rips! just tell him next time that he can use a towel to put the fins on so he doesn't hurt his hands hahaha

    @stab can we get some details about the single fin he was riding at 19:40? That thing looked dreamy

      So glad to see people saying that. He's been a fav of mine for a while and seeing him owning it is so inspiring. So much better than seeing hp short boarders absolutely fail at riding anything other than their 5'7 CI thruster :P

    The correct way to put on a tail pad is NOT putting one on. Tail pads are lame and ruin the beauty of a board.

  • @joninsco861
    @joninsco861 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes. One who has the
    Basic surfing mechanics can ride and or switch up to ride
    Any design . If one finds a 3 fin to stiff use a 4 fin. A tailor made board can have
    The interchangeable
    Slots for the Fins.

    I may be wrong but I think I heard Harrison competed as a grom back in the day. Regardless, it is amazing to see him riding a thruster after all these years on single fin/twinnies.

    Interesting how his ability to read a wave and be well positioned are what counts a lot here. I've seen guys with thrusters doing way worse for not knowing how to be on the pocket or "time" a wave.

      ^^^ this - if there’s anything riding a single fin teaches you, it’s positioning - feet position and wave position = flow 🤙🏼

  • @r1transformer

    Dude. This guy rips. His awareness on the waves is ridiculous. This guy was getting barreled and spit out like 20 times. WTH. When I was 16 learning how to surf my best friend always reminded me to never underestimate longboarders.

  • @elijahsmith3817
    @elijahsmith3817 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    arguably the best barrel I have ever gotten was on a costco wavestorm without fins in it a local wedge. I guess he was right about the best surfing is not always on the best board.
