The best surfer is the one having the most fun. For me I want to thank you for your channel cause i got back into surfing. At 40 yrs old shaking off the rust is rough😂. But your channel as well as Ben Considines channel helps me alot. Ive only made it half way across the board and im stoked and i cant wait to get to the nose. Keep those videos rolling!!!

Starting surfing a year ago in Nova Scotia at 30 and has been the steepest learning curve but have seen so much progression in a year! Absolutely love your videos!!!
Masterpiece of a video man. Great job. And The final message of actually embracing criticism to get better instead of just shrugging it off or pushing back is like next level grit / growth mindset. I find that attitude lacking a lot these days, so it’s good to see! Pleasure to watch!
Halfway through watching this and dude this is amazing. Top notch production and most importantly you can just feel how real it is. Love the inclusion of your son in this and just the honesty behind it. Stoked this performed so well for you, looking forward to more as always
Thanks so much bro!! Yea this was an incredibly fun video to make. I honestly didn't think it was gonna get views at all... I was actually quite down in the dumps the day before I posted because I had spent so much time on it and was afraid no one would like it haha! Thankfully I was wrong
There is so much wisdom packed into this video, I love it! Top 3 takeaways for me: Making things hard in invigorates passion. Criticism helps us grow, don’t take it too personally. It's great to see how driven you are, which shows not only in your progress in surfing, but also in the creativity you put into developing and editing these videos themselves.
I've really enjoyed jumping through your videos. I've been longboarding for a couple years but still am "developmental". I love your approach. Keep it up.
I broke my ankle surfing Lake Erie in October, talk about feeling like a kook. Still 2-3 months of rehab until I can even think about redemption, arg. Love your channel man.

My favorite part is seeing the father son bond and the matching tie dye shirts!!! haha Great attitude, positive and fun vibes! Hoping for more videos soon!
I grew up surfing very small summer waves in York Beach Maine, and The Wall in New Hampshire. I used this same technique, not because the waves were fast, but they were very weak. In certain circumstances, the pop up can be used as a mini "pump" to accelerate into the noseride. Veedster does this really well. I needed to get to the nose fast because an 8" wave doesn't have a long ride anyway. It maximized my noseride time. Another really fun technique that uses your quick pop-up/ one step to the nose. Do a long fade turn, but instead of a sweeping bottom turn to set up for cross stepping, do a short pivot stall and then run to the nose like you did in this video. It creates a speed variation (fast on the fade, almost stopping on the pivot, very fast once you hit the nose) that I think looks and feels really fun. I also think this works really well on shifting sand beach breaks like New Jersey/ Long Island/ OB/ South Bay
So true about the small waves.. faster you get there the more hang time you get! Wow I'll have to try that pivot fade thing. I believe I know exactly what you're talking about. Iv'e somewhat experienced that hard stall to a nearly 0 speed cross step, to insane acceleration on the nose. It's hard for me to get the timing down as I typically will just lose the wave because I didn't get to the nose fast enough.
Dude! 10 seconds in and I was already laughing! Such a good edit, and I'm gonna start working on that pop-up and lunge to the nose myself. .... THANKS Nose Dodgers!
haha thanks so much Billy! I was just informed that Ben actually has a video talking about the exact same technique. Couple excellent nuggets of wisdom in that one. I'll try and find it
Your videos/editing keep getting better! It's funny, I feel like I do the "pop two step" too often. Sometimes I think I should take more time/steps to get to the nose.
thanks josh!! You for sure should take your time to get to the nose, especially in the beginning. I rushed it for so long and it held me back. Once I slowed things down I was able to speed them back up again.. if that makes any sense lol
To really set up an excellent steep locked in nose ride or ten you need two things. 1 enter from deep and steep from behind the pocket. (The nose ride is a stall it’s self) so you want to enter with speed and once you step onto the nose in the five or ten position. You need to be going slightly faster then the wave, so when the “stall “takes place you end up in the curl. Now the second part. You need to be familiar enough with this feeling to surf from the nose, and 3 maneuvers work well from the nose to speed up or slow down. You can poke the nose down with your weight or press the nose into the pocket. You can do speed pump or wiggle the five position scraping under the lip. Or you can step back into the cheater five to turn under and around the section.
Fantastic video. Distilling criticism in to suggestions or advice can be difficult. Especially from rando internet "authorities". But you sure did it here. You rose to the challenge of getting toes over the nose. Toes on or near the nose is already difficult. And that extra couple inches can feel like a mile. There are plenty of people that reach a level of skill that seems to satisfy them. And they're content with that for life. And I'm glad they're out there having fun. But I'm like you. I'm always working on learning a new skill or relearning one I didn't get quite right the first time. Unless you're in a contest or showing off to your buddies you're only surfing for you and your enjoyment. I recall you saying in earlier videos that you were documenting your progress at long boarding. You're still doing that. Keep up the good work and keep having fun
Thanks so much Michael! I agree with everything you said and I'm very similar to you. Love honing the skills, but as long as people are having fun, that's the important part!
You've really upped your video-production game -- two-camera shoots, dizzying drone footage and on-screen graphics -- well done! I'm gonna try that two-steps to the nose move. I'm still at the stage of running forward and right off the tip, so it couldn't hurt.
I love how you handled this! I know the beach break struggle all too well surfing in the North East. I'm just happy when I can make my way to the end of the board with both feet, even if I'm an inch or so away from actually getting my toes off the nose. There's such a short window of opportunity to make it happen, but I appreciate your realistic approach. I will be trying this two steps to the nose approach, makes a lot of sense. As surfers we're always looking to improve our skills and look more stylish and graceful while doing so, but ultimately we're all surfing because it fricki'n FUN! Who cares if you don't get them toes off every time?! Not me! :)
WELL SAID!! Haha yes the struggle is real, but this is a great method to practice for the north east. Still good to learn how to do slow controlled cross steps as well, but I'm really liking getting right to the nose quick lately!
@@LongboardSessions woah wasn't expecting a reply from you. while I have your attention I was wondering if you could just post a highlight dump of all of your waves. This might take time or something so you don't gotta do it or nothing. Great video too btw
@@bluecheeseboy4566 Well I have no plans ATM to do a highlight reel, but maybe this video below might be helpful. th-cam.com/video/4sp7Jt_yL0Q/w-d-xo.html It's not a highlight reel, but it does show every wave I caught in a single session.
You’re absolutely brilliant Brian. The whole methodology and analysis and follow through and humor and captivating and intriguing and inspiring etc! Your smile and laugh has always been your most beautiful physical feature in my opinion and you make we want to surf but I won’t because I’m petrified of what’s lurking under the surface of the ocean water. Bravo. Did Liam get his scooter yet? I really hope to see you and the family soon. 😘
What a great response to an individual sitting and typing on a key board. Conhrats on the hang 5 btw, you're now redeemed and better off for it. 🤙yeeeeeeeew
😂😂😂😂 I’m sharing as a surfer of 20+ years- you have never acted like the expert. I have always just enjoyed how you shared your journey. Hahaha we’re all kooks by the way. Love this video though, it’s fun and refreshing.
Haha thanks so much! Yea that was the whole idea behind starting this channel as well.. I said to myself "i'm not good enough for people to watch me surf.. but if I make it about the journey then maybe!". Glad people actually enjoy that aspect
This was absolutely fantastic. Taking lemons to making some fun tasty tasty lemonade! One of the biggest reasons I subscribe to your channel! Learning from failure to progress!
@@LongboardSessions Also, a great thing to teach your kiddo. I am 51 and I just started my surfing journey earlier this year. My 10 year old is hearing all about my failures. :)
Your buddy Ben Considine would recommend two initial steps followed by two more measured steps. Nevertheless, your commitment to fun and surfing is infectious and a pleasure to watch - something I look forward to seeing appear routinely on TH-cam! 🏄🏼♂️
Thanks Adam! Well yes, that's what Ben would say. However, he also does this technique as well. Someone just pointed out to me that Ben made a very similar video to this a few months back. Check it out (below) th-cam.com/video/J2sEFjbH47k/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for linking the video. I noticed that Ben is a four-stepper to the nose regardless of method. I agree with this technique (works for me) because body weight is more easily maintained under the feet with smaller steps rather than two larger steps.
I've been longboarding for over 50 years, and don't care to nosedive. I surf for the fun and my enjoyment. Don't worry what others think. Surf for your own enjoyment.
When nose riding backside, it's a counter intuitive move, but focus on getting your feet to the other edge. Biting into the wave makes the fin come out of the curl.
To really set up an excellent steep locked in nose ride or ten you need two things. 1 enter from deep and steep from behind the pocket. Very good description of what it's like ! The control you have while on the nose is quite amazing.. I never would have believed it until I experienced it
Hey dude. Just found your channel and I love it. I'm a Baltimore resident who tries to get out to the beach as much as I can - unfortunately, it's not often enough to feel like I can ever progress on my longboarding. I surf some spots in NJ sometimes when I'm up there - I'd love to paddle out with you at some point and maybe glean some wisdom. Casey
Noseriding is just a trick, but if it's fun, do it. Do what you enjoy. Surfing for 50 years this Summer, I could care less what other people think about my surfing. I'm not concerned with tricks, I only maneuver to get into the pocket. I'm not in a contest, no one can hurt my "score" when it's only in my head. I saw this one older lady who got up totally square like she was snow skiing, then she walked to the nose and did a soul arch: beautiful. "Some leashes are physical, some are ethereal." I think you over-think it, but you're getting there on your own path, so don't worry. My only criticism would be, considering your excellent progress, is to relax your arms and shoulders. You have some courage, my friend; surfers are notoriously condescending.
Wow excellent words! I'm with you on this. I also completely agree with relaxing my arms and shoulders. Been trying to do that as best I can,, not easy tho!
Great video, love to see your son getting into it (and giving it to his Pops!) Seriously, though, are these trolls for real? “If a tree falls in the woods…” If I’m the only surfer out there, does anyone care that I’m a kook? Just got back from another session w/my new board. Conditions in MA are only fair this week, but the weather's too good not to try. The beach break is so expansive, I can use these 1-2' waves to focus on fundamentals and practice basics, such as my popup. (Nowhere near noseriding yet for me.) Also, I need to get my pre/post-surf routine down so as to be more efficient/enjoy more time in the water, esp. b/c Surfline says, “Next week… eh, mebbe not so good.”🤷♀️
haha yes it's the best having my son with me. We always have a good time.. and plenty of trash talk. Best way to be efficient is to have a purpose for each session, even if you don't succeed. But it sounds like you're already doing that which is great!
Thanks for another great video, sooner or later critics will come thats the price you pay when you become youtuber. My kook advice, you should sprint to the nose as soon as you finish your bottom turn and the nose is pointing to the shoulder, as you did when you got it right. otherwise theres no trimming to hold you on the nose, you should know that :) surely depends on the wave also, so I thnk the the speed of bottom turning and trimming is important to and not just the speed of the stepping. Keep pushing you.
Thanks! I'm not exactly sure... never surfed in the UK. We don't get waves too often... atleast compared to california. But when they're good, they are quite fun!
How bout 2 heels on the nose?? Why is everyone forget that? Plus, it doesn’t really count, unless there’s 10 toes on the nose. That’s why it’s called Hang 10, not hang 5. Just a friendly tip, use your toes to grip the nose… hang 5😅
Pretty nice video, I would say very professional and enjoy a lot the structure,Laughing when showing the cup :I love it when my wife let me go for surging....Bythe way which camera do you use and which cameras is the underwater gear. Thanks and keep it real.Greetings from Perú.
haha thanks!! Well as for cameras, most things are shot on a sony a6600, but the in the water gear is different. Bryan uses a panasonic gh6 I believe, but I'm not exactly sure. I forget the brand of housing as well.. but the whole setup aint cheap !
This was incredibly done. 💪👍🏄♂️🌊 The pacing kept it interesting and your edits with sound, broll, and different camera angles worked very well. I shared this on my socials which I hardly ever do. 👍💪🏖 Greetings from Florida. BTW have you ever had the chance to surf in Newport RI? I Grew up there.
@@LongboardSessions If you ever get the chance try first beach near the end where it goes from Newport to Middletown. Plus a few other spots you'll need to make friends with the locals to find. 🤔😉
You're really good at short film bro. You'll be great at producing an "Endless Summer" type movie one day. Also, what do you call it if a surfer only has nine toes?
Wow thanks so much! Loved making it for sure. Hopefully I'll do more of these. Making a full length would be a dream haha! maybe one day. Surfer who has 9 toes? Don't know, but they can perform a hang 9 !
Great video. As you already understand during is done for yourself. Who cares what others say. Now one thing, no one cares if you take two cross steps to get up there. It looks better. Two steps is 1 cross step.
Can I ask about your board specs? I have a 3 fin 9.2 longboard (I've had it for 15 years) and it is totally not intended for nose riding. I am looking forward to get a new board now. It is probably time for it.
sure! My board is a 9'6" COS chingona and I'm 5'4" and 135 lbs. I suppose you can say my board is a couple inches too big, but as of now that's how I like it. If you contact board companies directly they can give you recommendations on board size based on your height and weight.
@@LongboardSessions So would it be ok to say that the Chingona is not an specific nose-riding design regardless of your being able to nose ride thanks to your skills? My board has long parallel rails and sort of narrows at the nose and with my (poor) skills at surfing there is no way for me to reach the nose so I am really over-thinking desing in order to get my new board. I am OBSESSED with nose riding and that is were I want to put all my effort (and money) in.
Thanks!! Well two things: 1 is that I changed some settings on my camera and shot it all in 4k. Two is that Bryan Bacich has a really nice setup. So all of the in the water shots are done with a very nice camera
Great Job! This video is great, and just because your toes arenʻt always over the nose, you are still nose riding once you get up to the front section whether people like it or not ;).
What a great video! I live in Costa Rica and Have good friend in Jersey. Could you share the second fin model you are using? Looks sweet and if you get it in Jersey? I ahev a friend coming soon and he could bring it to me in Costa Rica!
Sure! The 2nd fin (the one I surfed with) is the Canzo by Solo Fins. You gotta order it off their website tho. So you'll have to get it shipped to NJ and then have your friend bring it over.
@@LongboardSessions Thanks man! Just came from a Sunset session. I was practicing first time on land as you did. It helped a lot! Will keep working to bring my toes on the nose!
I think he's right about a 5 might be but at the same time you can ride a longboard and enjoy just the glide. But if Iyouwant to make a real hang 5 this is how you need to do and train for this. You already done the harder part to cross step to here already 😁🤙🏽
Agree !! Yea it actually does help to worry about what's going on at the end of your board. It almost makes you more aware of things. However for people just learning how to get to the end of their board, it's the last thing they should think about lol
@@LongboardSessions It's about the precision and control and that's what make it beautiful!! Keep going and such a good video dude!! Greetings from France 🤙🏽
well done! I think your board slid out because of the fin. That just didn't look like a good noseriding fin. Anyway, thanks for making the videos, we always enjoy them.
Thanks!! Actually , I didn't really slide out as much as the lip just hit me. The whole wave just closed out ahead of me for the most part. The fin is actually one of the most stable noseriders I have. It's got like 3 inches of horizontal rake which is where the stability comes from, even though the base is quite thin. It's a different fin that's for sure lol
This fin is actually extremely stable on the nose. Even though the base is not so wide, the heavy rake brings the stability. It's a very cool fin.. review is coming haha

Oh my gosh- right?! North florifa gal over here 🙋♀️ east coast waves are way less forgiving energy-wise and shape haha.
Been surfing since I’ve be 8 years old. This is such good content! First min already hooked!
oh that's awesome!! I always struggled with "hooking" people in the beginning. I'm glad this one translated haha
always a treat when you upload. thanks for giving smiles and what not.
You got it! Glad you liked it
@@LongboardSessions woah wasn't expecting a reply from you. while I have your attention I was wondering if you could just post a highlight dump of all of your waves. This might take time or something so you don't gotta do it or nothing. Great video too btw
@@bluecheeseboy4566 Well I have no plans ATM to do a highlight reel, but maybe this video below might be helpful.
th-cam.com/video/4sp7Jt_yL0Q/w-d-xo.html
It's not a highlight reel, but it does show every wave I caught in a single session.
omg this video is a masterpiece
Thanks so much!!
Thanks so much!! Yes, Liam got his scooter!
Yea we havent see you guys in awhile! Maybe one of these days hehe. Life get's busy fast doesn' it?
That was awesome! At 62 yrs old and surfing my whole life in socal! I still loving doing one thing. Being in the ocean and riding waves! PERIOD!
haha yes sir!! That's what it's all about
What a great response to an individual sitting and typing on a key board. Conhrats on the hang 5 btw, you're now redeemed and better off for it. 🤙yeeeeeeeew
Thanks mark!!
that is sooo good on so many levels - just excellent and well done for another fine video!!
Thanks!! So glad people are enjoying it
😂😂😂😂 I’m sharing as a surfer of 20+ years- you have never acted like the expert.
@@LongboardSessions I got the memo 😆
This is great, love your style of video. Definitely worth the time!
Thanks so much Teddy!
A beautiful narrative about motivation and the learning process! Thanks for making it!
Thanks so much!! It was a fun one to make that's for sure
@@LongboardSessions I can imagine! Really inspiring.
This was absolutely fantastic. Taking lemons to making some fun tasty tasty lemonade! One of the biggest reasons I subscribe to your channel! Learning from failure to progress!
wow thanks so much! I'm really happy people are enjoying that aspect of the channel.. the failing haha
@@LongboardSessions Also, a great thing to teach your kiddo. I am 51 and I just started my surfing journey earlier this year. My 10 year old is hearing all about my failures. :)
Excellent video. The problem, the solution, the attitude all played out extremely well. Well done my friend. Catch you in Spring Lake cheers 😊
Thanks Jack!! Might be heading out sunday morning if you're interested!
A video well done. A sess well surfed. Love the tuba music backing the “ kook out “ segment. 😂 Pretty good stuff fer a Joursey boy.😎
Thanks Billy! Haha i know.. the second I heard that tuba song I downloaded it immediatley
that was one of the best surfing vids i watched so inspiring
Thanks so much!
I love your videos! That positivity is so motivating and inspiring, we need more surfers like this in the water \m/
Thanks so much!! Agreed, we can't take ourselves too seriously hehe
Funny, inspiring and relatable content for an experienced shortboarder who just started longboarding. cheers from Aus
Welcome to the dark side!
Check it out (below)
th-cam.com/video/J2sEFjbH47k/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for linking the video. I noticed that Ben is a four-stepper to the nose regardless of method. I agree with this technique (works for me) because body weight is more easily maintained under the feet with smaller steps rather than two larger steps.
I gotta try that as well. Just 4 small steps instead of the 2 large. Like Marina Carbonell
Great video!!! A lot of effort put into this one. You can really see that. Great job.
Thanks Rob! Hope you been well
Saw a house we would have bought near you... too bad our house is not even up for sale yet lol.
@@LongboardSessions Come on down. You guys would fit right in, in town. Way closer to the beach too!
I've been longboarding for over 50 years, and don't care to nosedive. I surf for the fun and my enjoyment. Don't worry what others think. Surf for your own enjoyment.
Noseride not nosedive. Darn spellchecker.
Yes exactly!
Genuinely smiling at the end of your video lul, great content!
haha awesome! Thanks Jason
When nose riding backside, it's a counter intuitive move, but focus on getting your feet to the other edge. Biting into the wave makes the fin come out of the curl.
To really set up an excellent steep locked in nose ride or ten you need two things. 1 enter from deep and steep from behind the pocket.
Very good description of what it's like ! The control you have while on the nose is quite amazing.. I never would have believed it until I experienced it
All I need is a cool buzz and some tasty waves and I'm good! Keep it up!
haha there you go!
Casey
Awesome thanks!! Message me on insta @longboard_sessions and maybe we can paddle out next time you surf
Turnstile! Cool place. Also, we've surfed together, I say no way, you're definitely not a kook. Keep on bringing it brother!🌊🏄🏻🤙
haha well thanks!! Love turnstile
Professional video i can say..
And what fin!
Thanks so much! Yes, it's quite a cool fin haha
I LOVED IT!!!! I really enjoy your videos 💋
Thanks so much!!
Haha, Love the perspective bro! Very cool..
Thanks Jay!
What a great video! Really enjoyed it :)
Awesome thanks so much!
I love how you snaked that dude! Ha ha.. just kidding. Great job.
lol! Gilad and I snake eachother all the time.. part of the fun
I think you're inspirational man ✊
awesome! Glad I can inspire !
Keep pushing you.
yes! Yea every wave is different for sure, but i gotta keep working out this quick steps to the nose thing. It's really been helping latley
I am a KOOK too, loved the video
haha thanks!
Bravo. Great response and attitude.
Thanks Nick!
Looks like you get better waves than we do in the UK, nice video 🌊
Thanks! I'm not exactly sure... never surfed in the UK. We don't get waves too often... atleast compared to california. But when they're good, they are quite fun!
Great content. Cheers from Portugal.
Thanks!!
Kook pride worldwide!
haha!
A cinematic masterpiece ✨️
Thanks so much!
Well done!!!
Thanks!
How bout 2 heels on the nose?? Why is everyone forget that? Plus, it doesn’t really count, unless there’s 10 toes on the nose. That’s why it’s called Hang 10, not hang 5. Just a friendly tip, use your toes to grip the nose… hang 5😅
Yes absolutley!! Love the grip
You’re a good surfer, just have fun :)
Thank you!
This was fantastic
Thanks Maddie! Hope all has been well
Your production skills are fantastic! Great video.
Thanks so much Luke!
This was incredibly done. 💪👍🏄♂️🌊
The pacing kept it interesting and your edits with sound, broll, and different camera angles worked very well.
I shared this on my socials which I hardly ever do. 👍💪🏖
Greetings from Florida.
BTW have you ever had the chance to surf in Newport RI? I Grew up there.
So nice to hear.. and that you appreciate the details haha! Iv'e never surfed RI.. heard there are some pretty good spots tho
@@LongboardSessions If you ever get the chance try first beach near the end where it goes from Newport to Middletown. Plus a few other spots you'll need to make friends with the locals to find. 🤔😉
Ok sweet! Yea i'd like to try it one of these days
Don't know, but they can perform a hang 9 !
hahaa correct answer bro!@@LongboardSessions
Exceptional video editing!
Thank you!!
Great video. As you already understand during is done for yourself. Who cares what others say.
Now one thing, no one cares if you take two cross steps to get up there. It looks better. Two steps is 1 cross step.
Yep exactly! Well said
Can I ask about your board specs?
I am OBSESSED with nose riding and that is were I want to put all my effort (and money) in.
did you get a new camera or editor? Looks crispy, feels crispy!
Thanks!! Well two things: 1 is that I changed some settings on my camera and shot it all in 4k. Two is that Bryan Bacich has a really nice setup. So all of the in the water shots are done with a very nice camera
Kaniela Stewart fun to watch and learn from as well. Have fun Aloha
He's amazing.. I surfed with him... or next to him in huntington beach this last contest. He is insanely good
So awesome!!! Yessah, hey keep on keeping on.
Now I know why you have no time to paint my kitchen!!!🤨
hahaha!! You found me out
That fin is wicked
Yes! I'm making a video about it shortly hehe
Great Job! This video is great, and just because your toes arenʻt always over the nose, you are still nose riding once you get up to the front section whether people like it or not ;).
haha true! Glad you liked the vid
Fluuuuuucke 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
😉
that deserves immediate what up? nice!
haha!
The chat Gpt is so relatable😂😂😂 Robot please tell me how to Hang 10!!
hahah totally!
Exactly. You got it!
Moral of the story? Bully people online until they do better 😅
hahaha!
We are all kooks ... That fin is crazy. Do you think changing it out will give you more stability for the nose ride?
This fin is actually extremely stable on the nose. Even though the base is not so wide, the heavy rake brings the stability. It's a very cool fin.. review is coming haha
Not only did You DO it, You CROSS-STEPPED.. Classic Hawaiian Style, harder than the other way.
haha yes!
