    Great video Amy. Oh how i enjoyed homeschooling my children. One has a 3.8gpa in 3rd year of college, the other became a locksmith. I am so very proud of both of them.

    I taught my four children how to be poor, i mean how to budget, how to make food that last, cleaning, washing, cooking, how to reuse what they have, creative decorating and thing's like that. My reason for this is because no one teaches you how to be poor, it's all about making money. I'm not poor but i live like i'am as simplifying your life mean's you'll never go without. Everyone can get by with money but no one think's about what happen's if you loose a job or the money you're use to having.

      I agree...real life preparing is more important than many things they teach

    • @sarahmurray523

      @@amymaryon I believe no one need's to learn how to be rich but you do need to learn how to be poor. I also believe a child will excel in the subject's that are needed for their future. Life has away of working out just as it should do. We should work to live not live to work.

    We've been homeschooling for about 3 years. "Unschooling" gets a bad rep because outsiders think you're doing nothing to educate your children. But they absorb everything around them. Nature walks are our favorite! School does not need to be 8 hours in a desk.

    • @lsun5322
      @lsun5322 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, but it needs to be more than just nature walks...

    • @AP-uo7sp
      @AP-uo7sp 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lsun5322 Well, if it's a child under age 6 nature walks would be enough. The great thing about homeschool is that the parent decides the curriculum. Even at age 16, the entire school day could be done outdoors.

      Agree!!!! I am tired of how to homeschool your mini-genius type homeschooling advice and it is all that I seem to hear, all I have heard for the 12 years I have been homeschooling. I find it makes me feel like the world's biggest failure for my 6 kids, ages 10-17. I have average kids that will probably all be essential workers one day. I know after this last year plus of covid insanity, I feel so discombobulated with both our schooling and the future. So this video is being bookmarked; it is exactly what I need to hear at this time of my life.

    Yes, when we started homeschooling all three kids I struggled because we went from states with little requirements to New York that had a whole lot of thing you had to submit through the year. (Military family here lol)
    It took me a bit but I realized that they are getting in sooo much more then I could even fathom. Now I can do all the reports and I don't stress about whether or not I have done the requirements.
    Thanks for taking the time to do this video, it was very encouraging.

    The thought of deschooling was soooooo hard for me to grasp in the beginning, especially since my state requires 180 days of teaching at least ELA & math and 90 each of social studies and science. It took me awhile to understand that those subjects are covered in things we do in everyday life. Baking is chemistry. Bible study/church is ancient history. Pizza can be a fractions lesson. Taking a walk can be a nature study. Even most video games he enjoyed involved math and problem solving. So, we deschooled for 6 months. And let me tell you, it made such a difference in our family!!!

    This resonated me with so much. I love it! The realization of this really hit me when I went to college. I was homeschooled all the way through, and did very basic grammar in early elementary, but no more than that. When I entered college, I took a grammar class. I had no idea how to diagram sentences, and didn’t know what a predicate or conjunction was. I passed the class with high marks and found it SO easy. Why? Because I read a LOT growing up, and I was 18 years old. It comes so much easier when you’re older, and after spending hours in books!
    I recently ditched my oldest son’s grammar book for this reason. He was almost in tears trying to diagram a sentence (in grade 4), and I said forget about that! I would rather him read...he’ll learn to diagram sentences in a few years 😊 There’s no reason to push it!

    So good! My mom and I have switched our kids this last year to your curriculum and it has been so helpful. I've loved your advice and reminder that it doesn't have to look like public school. It is repatition and kids learn well by repatition rather then not learning it in public school, because they mention it once. I didn't learn history or geography until I started homeschooling my children

    I wish I had seen this video about 22 years ago. It took me about 5 years of homeschooling and finding the right mentor before I figured out that it was okay to relax and okay to take control of our own curriculum. We have such a structured mind set when we are selves were not homeschooled. But once we figured it out we actually had alot of fun together. My youngest will be graduating this year. Wow! We did it!

    Yes it does. I have a son who is almost 20 now. He has already finished one college degree and currently working on a civil engineering degree. He taught himself a lot of what he knows or found resources to learn what he needs to learn. He actually thanks me now for unschooling him and allowing him so much freedom in his learning because he isn’t nearly as stressed out as the other college students. I am currently unschooling my 12 almost 13 year old daughter and she is already taking about opening her own businesses. With an S. I love the freedom they have to learn their passions. But I feel any form of homeschooling is way better than traditional public school.

    Yep, I've homeschooled/slightly unschooled for about 3 years now through a charter. We get our curriculum (of our choosing, with a provided stipend) from Timberdoodle. We grasp it, get it done, move forward. It only takes 2 hours, tops, a day. Otherwise we learn life. No structure, per say, to speak of. My son is accelerated and the public schools in CA where we live could not accomodate him. Smart as a whip. No worries when schools closed, either.

    Amy, I agree with your ways of teaching, and the child’s learning. My son came home from school and he told me he failed math. I was like there is no way, math is his greatest subject! So what his teacher wanted him to do was show how he come up with his answers on his algebra and geometry paper. The teacher accused him of cheating 😮 NO he did not! Sean with math is one who looks at a math problem and see’s the answer in his head, then he writes it down. He can’t always write down how he got the answer, he just knows, sees it in his head. So I took myself to the school had a meeting with the teacher and higher up, explaining his situation..all was fine. So yes, every child is different! Sean now has his bachelors degree, now finishing his master’s. So different can achieve much! Don’t ever give up on your child, listen to their needs..it all works out!
    If I were not a single parent when my kids were little, I would have homeschooled my kids for sure! I feel it throws out the window the kids feeling insecurity in schoolhouse learning.
    Great subject to talk about Amy! I will share this video with Kylie my daughter, she talks about doing so with her kids..Soon KIDS!! She is due to give birth any day with my grandson Giovanni 🙃I’m so excited! I call it on Mother’s Day!

    We've done it all. Public, private academy and homeschool. Homeschooling was absolutely the most rewarding. Life became more fun. We could take off and go on adventures without sacrificing anything or being penalized because we missed a day behind a desk. My husband could be a part of it all because our lives fit his work schedule as well. Those were the days the best memories were made. I wouldn't have traded that time in our lives for the world!

    Thank you for sharing. I have been wanting to “unschool” my children for a while now. I watched Knorpp and South discuss their journey and now yours. I cannot seem to get their dad on board. My son is dyslexic and learns more hands on and my daughter is “behind” in reading per standard numbers here in NC. I question the standards for a 7 year old. That may be the protective mama bear in me. I have noticed on virtual learning days letting them unschool seems to get them motivated. I let them go outside and figure out different ways to learn and let them suggest what they are interested in- I feel it’s so healthy to let them make decisions and think for themselves. We read together and do math together of course bc I do feel it’s very important to know how to do reading math etc... Thank you again for sharing and thank you for letting me get my thoughts out.

    • @shannonvandenbrouck3286
      @shannonvandenbrouck3286 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends on your state requirements. You’ll have to look it up in your area. I know that in Michigan(my home state) there are no requirements. In VA(currently reside) we have very basic requirements. We have to file a Notice of Intent at beginning of the year(unless you file Religious Exemption. At the end of the year you can use a couple different options for proof of progress. I have always used CAT, friends have used Iowa test and some use an evaluator. Just depends on the circumstances and choice of parent. Hope this helps you some.

    Good morning to you all and your family Amy. Your an awesome person who cares about your family. I'm up early to get some laundry done. My family and friends like watching your vlogs everyday Amy. Your an amazing family who has been blessed with home schooling and helping your children learn so much. My nephew's and niece's are still in school. Some of them are going to graduate in June of this year 2021. Things are different from when I went to school and college. Have a good week with your family. Your very talented and passionate about teaching your children about different things in life. I'm in a lot of pain because I went to do errands and went out to exercise. I'm praying to God to feel better my feet are in so much pain and I took some medicine last night. I've been busy cooking for us. I never complained about anything because I know that God will heal us from the pain and fear. It's going to be a good day today. Great video! I know so many parents are so stressed right now. I sincerely hope that parents realize that homeschooling is an excellent choice. We have been homeschooling for 22 years. Homeschooling is a completely different experience than schoolroom experience. It’s a whole life, whole family experience! Unschooling does NOT mean no teaching or no learning. Also, it’s okay to wait until they are ready to learn concepts! Not cookie cutter method - real life is never cookie cutter. Also, each child may learn differently and you can customize it. Mommies out there don’t let the outside world stress you out. Join a homeschool group for activities for your kids and lots of friendships and support for you!

    Amy I agree with going with kids own pace,but what happens if they are mixing with other non home schooled kids that may be at a higher academic level? Could that affect their personal esteem?

    • @amymaryon

      We talk about that alot..as they are little and maybe not reading as well as other kids .but they know in time they will get it and point out all that they do know..kids usually just want to play together..not so much..how much smarter am i than you.. i have ones in my own home that a younger one is far better at certain subjects than another..they all know they have different strengths and will continue to learn ..don't let that be their focus and if it is..then they might be more apt to study harder in that area..hope this helps

    Do you teach your kids a Home Economics class? I don’t think some school districts teach that anymore. I took in it when I was in school 21 years ago in Iowa. They also don’t teach cursive writing. I also got that in elementary.

    • @voiceofclarity5585
      @voiceofclarity5585 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right, many school districts across the country no longer have those things in their curriculum. I think those 2 things are important. So I definitely teach them to my homeschooled children. For cursive writing, I'm currently using, Handwriting Without Tears Cursive Handwriting. For part of home economics (or Family and Consumer Sciences as it is called in my state), I use the Today's Teen textbook and workbook. I'll also be using one of Amy's books on life skills.
      I'm a really big fan of Amy's. So I know that she teaches her children these things as well. She even has a cursive writing resource that's available on Amazon as well as Life Skills (Home Economics) resources available there as well. As she says in this video, she also writes her own basic academic curriculum. You can find her curriculum for most grades on Amazon, too. You can also find all of the above on her blog, Plain and Not So Plain.
      P.S. And of course my children learn home based life skills by seeing me cook, bake, clean, deep clean, and do laundry. They also help with those endeavors as well. I believe that financial literacy is also a life skill. So they help me with shopping and I discuss paying bills and saving money with them, too. In the future, we'll talk about credit, balancing checking accounts, debit and credit cards, investing money and APR as well.

    I’m a former homeschool mama. My daughter wanted to go to school to be with her friends and my son was struggling with ADHD and Dyslexia. So she went into public school in 7th grade and he in 3rd. I have enjoyed them being in school. The teachers at our school have done so well with my son. Much better than I could. He needs the structure that comes with the school system. However, I enjoyed teaching in the younger years. I thought the video was really good even though we chose to put ours in school. Each family is different and there are pros and cons to both, homeschool or traditional school. ❤️

We concentrate on Maths, English and Afrikaans(a second language). My son is 9 years old an he can do things that many men can't do. He is being trained by his dad how to paint how to change a tire, how tile and so on. He has learned skills to use in his own life. We are using your curriculum and we are using other books too. As a teacher, let me tell you, you are so RIGHT!!! I taught the same math to 5th graders and 11th graders! Teaching an inch deep and 12 miles wide each year causes the need for such repetition. My freshman year of college classes were things were the same things I learned in Junior High. I LOVED school. My youngest has a formal education that stopped in 8th grade due to severe depression caused by bullying. She is bright, intelligent, and passed the GED readiness course without taking the classes. I wish more people understood the need to teach children to think instead of who can be the best memorizer to pass a test.

    By any chance do you remember the remedial books you used for English and math? Or the book how to pass the GED? I have searched for this entire "School year" for these very kinds of books. Our circumstances are a bit different. I also have 10 children we were in a church that was against formal teaching in any way... We are no longer in that church but my children are suffering the effects of this. We have asked the Lord to forgive us for trying to do what we thought was the best Godly way to bring up our children then. I desperately need to get my late teens caught up . Much weeping and prayer this past year. Most of the books I find are literally children's books with little child like sayings and pictures. My teens are ashamed enough but to have to use this is heart wrenching to see their faces... Any advise would be a blessing. Thank you!

    I think homeschooling is a wonderful fit for many. I also think that a good traditional school does better than many people think. We certainly don’t expect children to sit all the time and we keep the interests of our students in mind, all while trying to meet state guidelines. Most become teachers because they love children and they work hard to do what is best for them.

      Do u work in a state adopting CRT? In Texas there's pornographic novels that detail incestuous scenarios, that are "mandatory" according to the activist teachers and school board and if the ( older ) teachers do not like the material they can quit. If they try to hide the books, by displaying in a not so prominent place on the shelf, they're in trouble for soft censorship. Principals have suggested showing parents 1 curriculum sample, while teaching something VERY different. School is becoming a scary place in alot of states. Leadership should not be so flippant as to change every aspect of citizen life as a new leader steps up. I can't stand politics and the divide, but in these cases its unavoidable to note degraded changes. Ive had problems with schools going back 14 years and its not getting better, rather exponentially degraded in quality and ethics.

    Can I ask you what you do about family members who don't agree with your more relaxed approach? I used to be a teacher before we started homeschooling and we love unschooling and a relaxed Charlotte Mason (lots of books) approach. My parents are academics and they just don't agree with what we are doing. We see them often, so it is something that always causes conflict.
    My children are so creative, we don't do screentime, so they play, learn and create all day. I love that they have so much freedom 💕

      When you are secure in what you do...you do as the bible says..stand firm.....you can speak in love but at the end of the day they are your children and this is your chance to teach them ..If you have to have a nice conversation with them letting them know how you feel..than do so...but don't do it out of defense..do it out of genuine love and caring to have peace.
