- Sacking of Rome: Empire of Charles V - Medieval Kingdoms Total War 1212AD Mod Gameplay - This is a recreation of the sacking of Rome 1527. Charles V has brought an army of 20,000 Soldiers to the gates of Rome. Rome only has a small force of about 5,000 men. The battle is a nasty one, and Rome is completely sacked. 1,000 defending troop are executed, and about 45,000 citizens are murdered, wounded, and exiled. It was a sad day for Europe, and some say the end of the Italian renaissance. In this recreation of the battle we are using the Mod for Total War Attila called Medieval Kingdoms Total War 1212AD. There are 4 attacking armies, taking on 3 defending Italian armies. This one is a great one :D Enjoy the Siege Battle :D

*Hey guy! Just a little heads up about the battle! The first time I record the battle I lost power on the last 5 mins of the replay. And was pretty frustrated. Because the recording was lost. So I decided to turn on a setting that would end the recording and restart it every 10 mins. That way if I crash or lose power The worst I will have to do is record 10 mins from where it last restarted the recording. Well instead of setting the at 10 mins, it was on 1 min. So the recording resets every 1 min, and you can tell because there is a little skip in the video. Im so sorry about that, but I just couldn't record an hour long video for a third time. But I don't really think it is that bad. Hope you can still enjoy :D*

I'm Italian, and even if I live in the north, far from the Eternal City, and so my culture is pretty much different from south-region, italian people still suffer from that catastrophe ad many words in our language recall that event. But as an italian, I love to see Apollo doing commentary on my lands! Thanks pixie!

Also I see what you mean with the gen, that was a great opportunity to get some kills behind enemy lines. Oh well, great battle overall, and thanks for covering it!

The Holy Roman Empire had been at war with the Papal States and the League of Cognac for a time now, they had sent a exiled French Duke to clear out and block Italy. This army had been disgruntled for a while, as they were not paid adequately and the Duke told them there was to be a great plunder of the rich Italian City-States. They headed south, being paid by Florence and Pisa to not be attacked, they finally arrived at Rome, the hungry and angered soldiers pressured the Duke to attack Rome. He soon did. As the soldiers attacked, the Duke was killed as the army approached the walls, leaving the hungry, gold-thirsty germano-spanish army with no leader. They charged through the city and the Swiss Guard held bravely. They made it to St. Peter's Basilica and the Swiss Guard held bravely as Pope Clement VII was escorted through a secret passage to Castel Sant'Angelo. He hid in the Castle seeing his city be ravaged and destroyed. After this, the Pope was at Charles V's whim (although Charles V never wished for this whole affair to happen) he wouldn't do anything to offend the Holy Roman Emperor and perhaps this is a reason why he didn't accept the annulment of the marriage between Catherine of Aragon (Charles V's aunt) and Henry VIII.

Yep, quite ironic, the Holy Roman Empire barely controlled Rome, its namesake and resided in Germany which had a big impact on the fall of Rome.

It was, to them, the second most holiest place other than Jerusalem, the Caput Mundi and the Papacy was the descendant of the apostle Peter and all that... So the Papacy, to medieval people, was holy it was very holy.

If you ever see a single artillery shot go off on its own, it's because it's being fired manually. All 4 artillery will fire together if being used normally.

Thanks for another great vid, PA. Just few historical corrections to help you along the way. Kingdom of Sicily was never a part of the Holy Roman Empire. What happened was that on various different occasions such as during the reign of the Hohenstaufen dynasty in the 1200s, the Holy Emperors also were Kings of Sicily by inheritance. Incidentally, this was the case again during the reign of Charles V, but this time, the succession was through the Spanish connection, because the crown of Sicily had went to the ruling house of the Kingdom of Aragon in the 15th century which as you know, Charles V inherited along with the crown of Castile as well from his maternal grandparents, the Catholic Monarchs of Spain. So in short, the Kingdom of Sicily-and the Kingdom of Naples-were never officially part of the HRE, but at various points in history it was under the personal union through inheritance and marriages.

Joined by remnants of the Roman garrison, the Swiss made their stand in a cemetery well within the Vatican. Captain Röist was wounded and then killed by Spanish mercenaries, in full view of his wife. The Swiss fought bitterly, but were immensely outnumbered and almost annihilated. Some survivors, accompanied by a band of refugees, fell back to the Basilica steps. Those who went toward the Basilica were massacred, and just above forty survived. This group of forty, under the command of Hercules Goldli, managed to stave off the Habsburg troops pursuing the Pope's entourage as it made its way across the Passetto to the Castel Sant'Angelo.

They have to make a game entirely on Charles v and his conquering as emperor. I mean, the troops and the tactics at the time variated so much, kings like Henry and Francis are perfect antagonist and still u can make campaigns about the Italian wars, conquest of America, war against the Turks, wars against the German princes, and other episodes like Lepanto(even though is a bit after Charles, but could still be a DLC, like Philip’s kingdom) or Tunisi, the sack of rome. I mean I want to use troops like Swiss mercenaries or landskenech, Tercios, French cavalry. I mean it’s just perfect.

Sicily belonged to the kingdom of Aragon (part of the Spanish Empire) that became a part of Charles V's empire when he became king of Spain.
If the defenders took advantage of the opening at the pillars with cav they might have routed that army. Wanted to at least see if it would work. Pity. Great upload as always.

True, but in general, rulers are referred to by their most important title (in Charles's case, being the Holy Roman Emperor was more important than being the King of Spain).

@@xShadow199 That isn't my opinion. The Holy Roman Emperor was considered the more important title. Again, he is referred to as Charles V internationally, so most of the world sees it that way. In Spain, he might be Charles I because the Spanish crown is probably seen as the more relevant one in the country itself. But everywhere else, he is Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor.

Sicily was not a Holy Roman Empire territory. Sicily was a territory of Spain, which Charles V inherited. It was only a personal union.

I can always appreciate warriors who fight savagely, tooth and nail to the end, particularly when they’re outnumbered. Men like that fought their way into history and immortality by their tenacity and stubborn resistance. The 189, the 300, the battle of Samar, the Bismarck and his crew slugging it out against an entire fleet to the end... I don’t care what cause they fought for or who they were, I respect that warrior spirit that exemplifies some of the best qualities a fighting man can have. I deployed, I got in a couple firefights, I felt that fear. I can’t imagine being in a position where you know you’re going to die and nothing you do will change it but still being able to muster the courage to put up such a fight that you’re remembered throughout the centuries as some of the best warriors in history. I hope I’d do the same but I don’t think anyone knows until they’re in that position. That’s a rare breed of person that will still hold the line even when they’re doomed.

During the 1500's Sicily was apart of the crown of aragon (Spain) And the kingdom of Naples was being fought over by the kingdoms of France and the empire of Charles the V. Ultimately ending in a Spanish victory.
