My grandfather was a hi-fi rep for Fairchild in the 50's and we a garage full of stuff made by them and Klipsch, University, EV...etc. All of eventually wound up in a landfill but I dont remember anything that looked like that compressor. Ive kicked myself many times for letting his LP collection all that vintage hi-fi equipment go.
True, before the on-set of mass-production and Independent labels of the 1960s, most all studios had very skilled engineers on staff that designed, made, operated and maintained there console's. It wasn't until the age of Rock Music and Super-Star bands/performers that where some what or more tech savi than the Stars of the early day's when things started getting more pre-packeged, pre-made and ready to go right off the delivery truck.
We all love plugins, and believe that "eventually" in-the-box tools will be indistinguishable from their analog counterparts, but there are still a significant number of analog tools that have depth of coloration and behavioral complexities beyond current digital products. Those who nit pick about professionals' descriptions of "warmth," etc. have either never heard A/B comparisons of analog/digital equivalents, or have the lowered expectations of a generation weened on inferior MP3 consumption.
Yup. As much as I love the few vintage gear I've tested, and dig some virtual stuff, I'm starting to really dislike those adjectives when people compare that Spinal Tappish, "we-don't-know-what-it-is-it's-just-It" old gear's Magic to milk shakes and fur coats. They want to sell you some "warmth", some "punches", some "hugs", some "syrup" and some "cream" topping. To me, cream, besides the one they use for the milk shakes, or in top of my chilaquiles, has always meant Baker, Bruce and Clapton.
Not because of the Beatles. Rickenbackers and Hofner violin basses are still made and they aren't nearly as expensive. Fairchild units are EXTREMELY rare. That's why they're so expensive. Only a small number of the originals were made in the '50's.
referring to the first few sentences...every piece of the analoge gear sounds different... how cool would it be if there were "different plugins of the different sounding originals" in the present situation, every plugin-user has the same sound.
Yeah and certain variables would make components represented by a gui becomes corrupt and we'd have to buy virtual variacs and tube/transister testers and buy and replace these components, which would be limited and extremely inflated in price on ebay by collectors/resellers who make anyone who actually could put them back to use or restore them so they could avoid sitting in a virtual storage unit for 30-50 years til someone bids on that and sells all of the treasures within at auction. Man, I'd never eat again. BUUUUTTT, No, I see what you're saying, small differences in harmonic distortion or blah blah blah. That might be interesting.
Yes, these pieces do have their "sound". And, yes, eventually plug-ins will sound this good... BUT.... The Beatles would have sounded great through Alesis compressors. I am the Walrus was I am the Walrus BEFORE it hit the Fairchild...
@avalanchecanvass Yeah that's totally it, you explained it better. And it's just how it is... but these people... It kind of bothers me that these guys get way too high on their tools and eventually over valuate their roll almost... pathologically. I mean... it's great that these machines add up to the quality of the music, but in the end... the sole suggestion that these machines make classics, for example, makes me think they ache for a reality check.
14 YEARS AGO! Love JJP
Damn was this video mixed with a fairchild; audio is loud as hell
I love listening to him talking about sound mixing. A real artist.
His plug ins are amazing! The man is passionate about tone!
Mr. Puig IS THE MAN !!!
great vid..guitar amps of old are the same way. This was explained exceptionally well.

Brilliant plug.

I always use my Waves version on my stereo mix, set to the mastering glue preset. It adds that little something that really sounds good.

Fairchild 670 Is the best nothing can't compare!!!!!
No I wish I did. I've been in a studio that have one.
I can dream can't I (of owning these).
They should have mentioned Jellyfish and Jason Faulkner in his credits, plus many Contemporary Christian artists. Great video, though.
And the plugs rocks!
